Solid 3 Stars. I am from Long Island and say what you want about us New Yorkers but no one can deny that we know our bagels. This place is very popular among athletes and regular GW students. Service: Excellent especially considering the number of people they get every day. Selection: you can clearly see when you walk in that there are just so many different types of snacks on either side of you, personally like to get a Snapple with my bagel Bagels: I have two basic orders: 1) Egg, bacon and cheese on an egg bagel with salt pepper and ketchup 2) cream cheese and turkey bacon on a plain bagel Here's my thing with this place, their bagels are fine bagels but they advertise them as "New York Bagels" and that's where my problem is. They are fine bagels but to begin to compare them to NY bagels like no they honestly do not compare. IN ADDITION, everyone raves about all the bacon on their sandwiches, this is NOT a NY thing to do. Putting bacon in a grader or cutting it into tiny pieces does not make the EBC bagels taste good it just makes the bacon go everywhere and creates a mess in your mouth and where you are eating. I will still go to GW Deli before and after classes but idk if it will be my first choice of recommendation if someone asks me where the most authentic NY Bagels are in D.C. Super-friendly people, and generally very busy but fast! They really manage to fit a lot of deli into a small space. Coffee's also dirt cheap. No complaints! Cheap, hot, and hits the spot. For $17 I got: Steak and Cheese sub, Hot Pastrami with swiss on Rye and a large Clam Chowder. Food: very fast, hot and HUGE. Clam Chowder was probably nuked but was homemade. Don't get discouraged by the line. When we got there, it was to the door but moves fast. This place is a short walk from GW Hospital and located on the GW campus. They have snacks / drinks / and other odds and ends in a small store which is the front part of the place, and the deli takes up the back. I had the chicken sandwich which was great as well as a side of mac and cheese which was just good. The prices are a bit high for deli anywhere else, but in Washington DC its reasonable. If I were a college student I would think its a bit much though. Overall, if I need a break from having Froggie Bottom for lunch I'll mosey on down here for a quick sandwich I think. read more

I work at GWU so when I heard about this place and their sandwiches, I have to go. I'd probably frequent GW Deli at least 2x a week if I could. Today, I stopped by and picked up a Steak and Cheese on Wheat with Chipotle Mayo. I'd never tried the Steak and Cheese but it was just as delicious as my staple Turkey BLT on Wheat with Chipotle Mayo (which I've convinced myself to start adding avocado to. Had the cranberry chicken sandwich. This was a true knife and fork sandwich with loads of chicken salad. Very flavorful with a touch of sweet. No nuts or celery which would have made it perfect but by far the best chicken salad I've had from and sandwich shop. It's located in the back of a small store with tons of drink, chips, and snack and candy options. The fountain drinks offered a nice cup option with that wonderful crushed ice everybody loves. My daughter got the bacon,egg,cheese, and avocado on a bagel and her friend got a meatball sub. They all looked and smelled delish! Only suggestion would be small tables out front. This place is amazing! My boyfriend and I took a trip to DC last weekend and made a stop at GW Delicatessen before we left because we had heard wonderful things about it. I am so glad we did! It was around 11 AM so we decided on breakfast sandwiches over anything else on the menu - which was huge, by the way. I got bacon, egg and cheese on a plain bagel and my boyfriend got sausage, egg and cheese on an everything bagel. My sandwich was piled high with bacon, and his had not one, but two sausage patties on it. We went on a Monday and there were no more than 3 people ahead of us in line. However, we had passed the delicatessen Saturday and the line was out the door. I'm sure this depends on the day of the week and the time you visit too, but just be prepared to wait a few minutes if you're going to visit. There is no seating! It's actually very small inside, so as soon as people would get their food they would head out. As far as prices go, it is definitely an affordable place! I'm not sure what the sandwiches cost on their own but for 2 big breakfast sandwiches, 2 drinks and a small bag of chips the total was $17. You should absolutely give this place a try! read more

I just finished a Steak and Cheese w/ everything on it from GW Delicatessen and I must say it was refreshing to enjoy a truly authentic sub. Most places do not offer diced hot peppers so I've stopped asking for it as a rule. However, the friendly, outstanding staff here seemed to perceive what I'd like and suggested the hot peppers... they were amazing. Not only does this deli attract a lot of traffic from the local student population, but they handle the chaos very well so don't be intimidated if it looks packed out. I will be making the trip from 10 blocks out to enjoy a truly fabulous lunch again soon. The guys who run this place are a trip. They don't use cash registers, for one. The best thing about this place is, duh, the deli. The egg and cheese sandwich is a good choice and will only cost you $1.70. My cohort and I ordered many spinach empanadas while we were grad students. The perfect cheap, convenient meal for a starving student. The grill cheese sandwiches are all the greasy goodness that you expect from fried bread, butter and cheese. The GW Deli also carries drinks, snacks, cigarettes, candy, and fruits. Those items are pricier than if you bought them at a grocery store, but you are paying for convenience. read more

This is a great little shop located in the center of the university. It's a wonderful place to get your generic sandwiches like egg, bacon, and cheese on a roll. I walked in and got two half smokes. They said they didn't have chili during the summer, not a big deal. I totally get it. But on the way out the cashier asked me if I wanted a bag and I said yes. When I remembered that DC has a bag tax, I told him I don't need one and that I am only going a half block. The cashier starts to insult me about how I pay $60,000 a year at GW but can't afford a bag...(I don't go to GW) ...I thought the whole point of the bag tax was to PREVENT people from taking unnecessary bags. There is no seating as it's really just a little bodega type shop but OMG the BLT sandwich I had was probably the best BLT I've ever had and it was only $5.95. As a GW alumni, this is the place I miss most on campus. They have the best bacon in the city (ultimate hangover cure), and make perfect grilled cheese sandwiches. They always have perfectly ripe, fresh avocado for sandwiches (unlike some other delis in the area that use shrink wrapped junk). As a New Yorker - this place has some of the best bagels you'll find in DC. Giant iced-coffees year round are what got me through endless hours of studying and writing papers. My metro step is easily Farragut north on the red line however when I need the perfect breakfast sandwich to get me going in the morning I take the extra stops necessary, and make my way to this joint in Foggy Bottom. Great quality meats, bagels and croissants. They make your sandwich fresh while you wait to order right behind a small kitchen. The menu seems expanse - honestly my advice is just think about what are the components of your favorite breakfast sandwich in general. Whatever that may be, tell them and they will make you exactly that. Great customer experience, always willing to help out and choose a great combination. GW Deli offers a HUGE variety of snacks and drinks, ranging from your typical Coke & Lays Original, to some exotic/novelty flavors you never knew existed. You can get lunch here every day for 4 years and never experience every possible combination of food and drink. Prices on the sandwiches are very fair, but the drinks and snacks have a very high markup. Be careful what you buy and check the price stickers, you might be picking up a bag of Chex Mix that costs 3x what you're used to.
