I should have went with my gut and got the turkey club as planned. Damn it Maaan! Came with my coworker friends for lunch and there was sooo much to choose from like empanadas, gyros, and all sorts of Deli sandwich classics. And what did I do, but choose a chili half smoke Nothing wrong with that I suppose, but the half smoke itself was salty and a bit overcooked. The chili had beans in it and just seemed like something leftover, sitting in their fridge from a few days ago. The sauce had evaporated, so I was just left with chunks of beef that lacked chili flavor. Hell, for all I know, it could have been left over spaghetti meat?! From the many 4 and 5 star reviews, obviously these people are talented, as I looked over my shoulder and peered into the cube next to me, only to see my coworker Jim biting out of his turkey sandwich in slow motion, savoring every bite. Remember me? Right, I'm the breakfast guy. Well, guess what I got at GW Delicatessen. Right, again. A breakfast bagel. My wife and I were touristing in DC and stayed at the Marriott on 20th Street on the edge of the GW campus. We walked everywhere and I had no interest in a long trek to breakfast. GW Delicatessen was a few short blocks away and their website said bagels so... off we went. Not a fancy place, (think bodega) with the deli counter in the back. We had our masks on and stayed appropriately distant from the customer in front of us and when it came to be our turn we ordered lox and cream cheese with everything; one on a sesame and one on a whole grain sesame, to go. They came very generously portioned with lox, cream cheese, onion, tomatoes and capers. At a reasonable price, with an easy walk, we did it again a couple of days later as we left town. GW Delicatessen has other offerings such as breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches that looked very good indeed. There is ALWAYS a line though, filled with GW students but they have about 4 people working the counter taking orders so it moves pretty quickly. I just came here for the third time this week and usually come at least once a week when school is in session... but no longer. The food is awesome, the attitude not so much. I ordered something new today and the server offered to make it hot even though it was listed on the menu as a cold sandwich. That sounded good so I agreed. When I went to pay, I was given a higher price plus tax than the posted menu indicated and I told the person at the register. His response was a defensive screed about how they "can't" be bothered to tell the customer when there is an up charge that they also can't be bothered to post... To the gentleman's credit (I'm using that term VERY loosely,) after his angry screed that contained not even a passing "I'm sorry," he offered to forego tax on my order, but as I tried to explain that I wasn't really interested anymore after being spoken to so terribly, his interjected response was: "oh, you think I'm terrible? That'll be my dinner now!" I left... Way to double-down on disrespect... For the record, yes, I do think that this gentleman is terrible- certainly at his service industry job and potentially just in general. It was never about a minor up charge. It's about respect for the customer. Surcharges are perfectly fine, just inform your customers. When you don't do that and a customer is mildly annoyed, just say you're sorry for the confusion and move on. Do not get defensive/aggressive with a customer...ever... just ever... When there is a surcharge, the responsibility is on management to inform customers. It takes no more effort from your employees to say: "would you like your sandwich hot for x additional charge?" Than it does to ask and leave that information off. In sum, the food is excellent but if you deviate from your usual order, the menu is apparently littered with hidden surcharges they don't want you want you to learn about until you get to the register, and if you call it out, you will be treated with almost cartoonish disrespect from someone who may or may not want to fight you. I never thought that my worst experience ever as a restaurant customer would be at a place with good food, but here we are... How do you lose a consistent customer's business? Exactly like this. As a senior at GW, I have to say I'm a little ashamed that this was my first time at the deli. I guess my excuse is that there are always too many people whenever I want to go. This time, since it was the last day of finals, most people had gone home so there was for once no line. They did not look like the thin and pathetic-looking ones you get from Whole Foods. The only thing is that they ran out of whole wheat bagels and it was sill early in the morning. Well, this deli has been here since when Foggy Bottom was still a neighborhood and GWU was a small college. One of the real quintessential Washington landmarks. The house of bacon. I went the extra block to score a breakfast bagel here, even though I was running late for class. The prices are staggeringly cheap. Even though my bacon egg and cheese bagel broke $4, it was worth it. There must have been about 10 slices of bacon on there, no joke. The bagel, made locally somewhere, was pretty decent. The GWD was out of my first choice, poppy, and I heard them tell one of two other customers they were out of the kind they wanted, too--a typical bane when you import ingredients from another establishment. The egg was perfectly done--golden and crispy around the edges, but some skilled fry cook left some gooey, heavenly yolk to melt over the crispy bacon on a few delectable bites. Tuna Salad: Very tasty, on any bread or bagel. Bacon Cheeseburger: A little known secret. Two seasoned beef patties. A little greasy, but will not disappoint.
