Ashley did a full highlight and cut for me - my hair looks just amazing - she did what I asked for and I couldn't be happier with the results. I had such a great experience I was surprised by how inexpensive it was - $250 for a highlight and cut. Most salons as nice as gypsy rose charge $450 minimum for the same thing. What will keep me coming back (aside from my gorgeous hair and killer prices) is the salon - everything was clean and organized, they have multiple brands of top of the line products, the whole salon has a relaxed energy there, and it's so nicely decorated. So I will starts off by saying that I gave this place MANY chances to improve. My go-to stylist was Monica because she specializes in curly hair. Unfortunately, the past few times I went in, I was treated with horrible customer service and was made to wait even after scheduling an appointment. The very last appointment I scheduled, I waited 35 minutes to be seen after my original appointment. THIRTY FIVE MINUTES! And to top it off, I told Monica exactly what I wanted and she did a subpar job and ended up making my hair look like a 90s hair spray commercial. I have never been more disappointed. I did not receive any type of apology, was not offered any type of beverage while I waited, and ended up having a rushed job done on my hair. To this day I still regret giving Monica a tip because she did NOT deserve it. I absolutely do not recommend this place to anyone who values their time. read more

Maybe my expectations were too high after reading all the 5 Star reviews but I just didn't have as great of an experience as everyone else did. I had Simona as my stylist and she was wonderful. If I could rate her alone it would be 5 stars hands down. The place is kind of hard to find. I drove pass the store and had to round back. Parking is spacious behind the store. When I walked in I was greeted by the front desk. I informed them I did have an appointment and they told me to take a seat and my stylist would be with me shortly. As I sat, I got to take a look at how cute the store's layout was. I thought the decor was nice. Simona came out and greeted me. Then she lead me over to a wash chair to get my hair shampooed. I told her I wanted to do a deep conditioning. She went and grabbed a little bottle of conditioning oil ($15) and mixed it in my hair. We got to talk a bit and she informed me that usually she would give her clients a nice scalp massage but the salon was quite busy so she wasn't able to and I had to give up my chair. I sat and waited in another area while letting the condition set a bit. Simona was very sweet and brought me a drink while I waited. When the chair became available again she rinsed me off. Simona and I discussed for a bit of how I wanted to cut my hair. The end result was beautiful and exactly how I imagined it. I decided not to trim my bangs and she told me that I can come back if I changed my mind and she'd trim it for me no charge - how awesome is that? The reason why I wasn't so satisfied with my experience was because for the amount I paid, I expected more than just a good hair cut. If I wanted just a plain old simple hair cut I would go to the salon down the street for $20. I drove out of my way to this place because of all the great reviews about their customer service and overall exemplary experience. Instead I felt that they overbooked (how could it possibly be so darn busy on a Thursday afternoon?!) and now the stylist is hastily trying to finish up with their client to rush onto the next one - leaving me feeling like I didn't received the kind of attention I paid for. I usually do not give reviews especially a negative one. But I felt the need to review this place. Seeing the 5 stars review in yelp, I decided to get Brazilian blowout treatment on my hair here for my wedding which is in a month. I am very disappointed with the results of the treatment. I waited for 48 hours after the treatment to wash my hair however I do not see much difference in my hair before and after the treatment. Hair is not shiny, not that manageable, frizz is still there, does not feel soft. Infact my hair is looking weird now. Also I am losing a lot of hair after the treatment. I called the salon and even got in touch with the stylist to see if she can fix my hair as my wedding is nearing. However they have not been so responsive. I have done Keratin treatment from Aveda prior to this, the results were really good. I loved my hair then, soft, shiny, manageable, no frizz. May be this place is good for other hair styles but definitely not for brazilian blowout hair treatment. read more

Gypsy Rose has such a funky young vibe. The staff is all young and friendly. As you enter and are waiting to see your stylist you are offered beer, wine, tea or coffee. There's plenty of parking in the back. Monica cuts my hair. I have long, thick hair, which not many people can cut and style well. There's nothing worse than a bad haircut, especially for us, girls. This has to be one of the worst experiences at a salon I have ever had. They were rude, unprofessional and lacked interest in their clients. I made an appointment with Monica. I got there 5 minutes early and was told to have a seat. I waited patiently while the girls working there sat and gossiped and talked. After 25 minutes went by and only seeing one other person I got up to ask if I would be seen soon. They simply said yes. I sat back down waiting patiently when (not knowing at that moment) Monica walks in. I finally start getting my hair cut and find out she had a cancellation and decided to go get her nails done before my appointment and was their the entire time I waited for 30 minutes for her with no one telling me a thing. What's worse is she totally messed my hair up. I had to go to another place to have it fixed. Called this place and thankfully I was able to schedule an appointment within the same week with stylist, Monica. The interior and decor of this place is so hip and pretty. I got my first haircut here with Simona, and wow I am impressed! She is an expert at what she does and very understanding and attentive of what I wanted! I came in to fix a bad haircut I had received at Special Fx 2 weeks prior. Simona completely turned my hair around and I seriously love it!! I used to tie my hair up everyday because I didn't want to look at my bad haircut but now I actually wear it down :) Simona is friendly and makes you feel welcomed but not overly chatty to the point that it's not a relaxing salon experience. I love that she allows you to take a few days after you cut to see if you want to change anything about it and she'll fix it for you !! Simona gave me her card which has her email on it and a site to book with her online. She's super responsive and I can really appreciate that because I hate calling around for appointments while I'm sitting next to my boss at work haha. First, I have to say I really like the aesthetic/vibe that this salon has going on. I love the vintage/pin-up glamour feel they've created. I also love that I was offered a glass of wine during my cut; I hardly ever get my hair done, so feels nice to be extra-pampered! I had a cut done by Simona and was very pleased with the entire experience. I wanted a big change so I decided to cut off ~7 inches of hair, and she did some light layering to frame my face. The next day, after the curls had fallen out, I was regretting not going shorter. She had given me her card and told her to email if I had any issues. I thought it'd be a longshot, but I reached out and explained how (by absolutely no fault of hers) I wasn't satisfied with the length. She agreed to take some more off, and was able to fit me in within a week of my first appointment. I'm very grateful, because I am much happier with it now!! She was super sweet and personable, and I appreciated her going the extra mile to make sure I was happy with my new short hair. read more

My hair was getting wayyy too long, so I decided to stray from my regular place and go to Gypsy Rose! Janessa did my hair because I heard how good she is with layering. I have straight, thin Asian hair so it's not too hard, but I wanted to find someone who specializes in layering because I was scared someone was going to mess up my hair haha. She's super nice and friendly, though! Usually I get awkward silences with my stylist, but Janessa was nice. It was pretty comfortable. The hairstyle came out fine. I asked for edgy and I got it, so she did a terrific job at that! But my bangs.. She's good with layering, but she's not the best when it comes to bangs, I guess because it came out pretty icky.. :/ The one other thing I didn't like was that she was the one who rang me up. I don't know if it's just me, but I really don't like it when my hairstylist handles the transaction because it makes me uncomfortable giving tip.. I ended up giving her $10 tip when I wanted to give her a bit less because she took the bills and she was like, "do you want change?" in which I thought it was awkward saying yes, so yeah. Let me preface this review by saying: I am the laziest person when it comes to my hair. I will let roots grow out for six inches... I sometimes shower at night just to go to bed without brushing my hair first... I will get 1 haircut a year, but then get the bright idea I can trim it myself in between (bad idea ladies, no matter how many YouTube videos you watch). I basically treat my hair horribly. Well last week I was beginning to get bothered by my hair dangling all the way down to my low back and looking quite scraggly at the ends. Yes, this IS what happens when you neglect it for a year. I hopped on yelp to see what I could do about this dire situation. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Gypsy Rose was nearby, had a solid 5 star rating, about 60 reviews (from real people), and was cute inside!!! I called immediately and got an appointment the next day! Simona was my stylist and made me feel comfortable right away. She listened to what I wanted, but when I was unsure about certain things, she gave me her own personal opinion about what she thought would look good (which I love). She spent an hour and a half with me, and it felt like I was hanging out with a friend the whole time! We had much to talk about and before I knew it, she had me washed, cut, blow dried, styled and ready to go!! My hair looked beautiful and healthy and I realized I should probably treat it to a trip to the salon a bit more often than once a year. I would definitely recommend Simona to anyone who is looking for an excellent hair stylist. Prices are very reasonable and the salon offers an abundance of services. I will be back! Berta is your girl if you want a fresh new look and some great well-done color. I've been going to her for about 2 years now, and have since tried out a bunch of different colors, ombres, balayage - you name it. Each time the color is seamless, the blends awesome, and I've had zero complaints (and i'm picky). Bonus: I've almost always stared blankly at her and told her I forgot about my appointment until the day of. Somehow Berta still manages to give me new looks and color suggestions, even when it's the end of the night and she probably just wants to strangle me for making her try and come up with new ideas. As a guy i have had some pretty crappy haircuts. So i decided to try this place out after my sister comes here often. So I scheduled an early morning appointment with Kelli for a Saturday in just 5 days. When i walked in that morning it was a really welcoming environment and at the desk was Kelli. Kelli is a really cool and friendly stylist. For my first time there, she made me feel very welcome, sat me down at her station and exactly understood how i wanted my hair to be cut. Love it! Found my new salon in the southbay! Checked out Gypsy Rose when I found out Janessa moved here from Sailors & Saints. She was booked for the whole day, so I went with someone else since I absolutely needed my hair colored that day. Jocelyn was a doll! She colored my hair auburn-red - the exact color I was looking for. After being disappointed with an all-over color job from a random spot in San Francisco, I knew I was in search of a new salon with fantastic colorists. And Gypsy Rose is that place! The salon is situated on Meredian Ave. (steps before it turns into Park Ave.) right off of San Carlos in the Rose Garden neighborhood of San Jose. It's an intimate spot with great decor. If you like local SJ / Chicano artwork, be sure to take a look at the "gallery" / small exhibition of work in their hallway. I spent my minutes of letting the color set right in that little corridor. Ladies and gents, you'll be pleased with any stylist at Gypsy Rose! They'll take care of you and listen attentively to what new cut or color you desire. I only get my hair cut twice a year (I know, I'm terrible), and after 2 visits to Gypsy Rose, I can assure that it will be my go-to place every 6 months. I've gone to a number of salons, and each time, I was either unsatisfied with my cut, or satisfied with my cut but unsatisfied with the price. Here, you get both - a great cut for a good price of $55. Simona is awesome! She cut my hair both times I visited, and I really appreciated how she added her input while understanding what I wanted. Some stylists get so caught up with their personal opinions of what will look best for your hair that they fail to acknowledge their client's interest. You won't have that problem here. I have long, silky hair that tends to get flat....a lot of the time. Simona added layers to give my hair more volume, and I continue to love my hair as it grows out. I followed her here from sailors and saints and will continue to go to her. She's really passionate about what she does and in addition is such a great person! The salon is super cute!
