Mindy is the sole reason that this place gets 3 stars. I called to make an appointment and got John. I knew my trunk latch was broken. It had been replaced 3-5 years ago and it was the same issue. This time it was stuck. I told him the issue and he said "how do you know that's the problem?" I said it had happened before and it was replaced, same issue. He said "yeah but did YOU figure it out or have it diagnosed?" I said "I KNOW this is the problem." I definitely felt like he was being super condescending at that point. CONTEXT: A few months back I had an issue with my temperature gauge. My mechanic could find NO issues and thought the gauge had malfunctioned. He said to take it to the dealership and make sure that's what's wrong. The car didn't overheat, the gauge just went crazy high. No leaks no issues with the radiator. I took it to H&M since VW had such a backlog and no appointments. John was the one that checked me in THAT day, and came out and said "yeah I can smell that radiator fluid leak, that's the issue." When again, I said "I am pretty sure it's the temperature gauge." RED FLAG on the attitude. PRESENT day: he asked when I want to schedule and I said the day after Labor Day. And he's silent so I say what's available? He said "when do you want to come in?" Again I say Tuesday, and he asked time, we settle on 9:30 and I say we will buy the part. Thanks bye. I was NOT enjoying being treated that way, so I wanted OFF the phone. A few days later, my husband says "have them order the part." So I updated it using their online system, which I got a text to use: see photos. That update never got TO the business. I didn't want to call again and be berated, so I trusted that the online system would work to communicate. I arrived at 9AM for my 9:30 AM.appointment, and decided to check in with Mindy because if I didn't want to have to talk to John again. I asked if they had the part and she said no. I said I had gotten a confirmation email when I sent it in their online system. She said she didn't see anything and would ask John and they would update me as soon as they had a timeframe. I have used mechanics for many years, known MANY personally and part of business is updating the customer and ensuring they don't need the vehicle back same day. That was NOT done. I called at 3pm, thankfully getting Mindy, who said they had started working on it and were trying to open the trunk latch but were having a hard time because it was broken. (well yes, what I told John was accurate...face palm.) She said they would within the hour with an update. (She is VERY pleasant, kind and professional.) About an hour later, John called and said "the latch is broken and we need to order the part. It should be here by Thursday." I said "when can I pick it up and schedule to come back?" He scoffed and said "it's all tore up right now and the trunk is open. It's not going to close." I said "I hadn't planned on being without a car all week..." To which he replied "I don't know what to tell you." Y'all, I was fuming so I just hung up. I called around 12:15 on Thursday since the online system showed my car hadn't even been "inspected" yet. And I got Mindy (thank GOD!) She told me he was putting the trunk back together and it should be ready in about an hour. She offered a Lyft ride to come get me, but I declined because I was in the middle of a workout and she offered again and I said no thank you but. I told her that when I checked the status, I saw HER name listed as the Advisor was relieved because of how John has treated me. When I told her about it, she apologized profusely and said she would speak to him. I went to pickup my car and Mindy explained what they did (replace the trunk latch, and remove loose screws and put it all back together, etc.) I paid the $533.18 (geez SO expensive compared to the place I usually go and get treated WELL,) thanked Mindy and she said I was set to go. I told her I saw my car but it was in a gated yard. She apologized again, and said that she had asked for my car to be pulled around so she will have them do it immediately. I was honestly so relieved just to be leaving I didn't do the ONE thing I should have. Which was check the trunk. Big time FACE PLANT for me. Got to the store, opened the trunk, and I can hear something rolling around inside the panel. GAH!!!! I called back, got Mindy, who apologized and asked if I could come in on Monday at 10AM and promised I would be out quickly. Mindy said the tech was expecting me and it should be between 30 minutes and an hour and showed me to the waiting room. It was a nice quiet and clean area with a quiet and clean restroom. After 25 minutes Mindy came to get me, and said it was a piece of plastic from the old locking mechanism that must have been stuck and loosened with my driving. $533 later & three weeks later it's finally done! read more

The afternoon before our trip, spring break of course, we had a screw take up residence in one of our tires. Knowing the last time we were in for a service Mindy had mentioned that we should talk tires soon-ish, we figured it was time to replace. We called Mindy at the end of her day and she took the time to find us a new set of tires and the time to have them installed the next morning! And here we are, on the road only an hour or so later than we planned! I had just purchased a brand new car and was working on cleaning out their garage so the car was parked in the driveway. As I carried out cans of spray paint, a can slipped out of my hand, hitting the driveway and puncturing a hole in the side of the can. The paint immediately began spraying, covering the ENTIRE front of my new car before rolling under the car spraying the wheels and the trim along both sides of the car. I called the dealer who referred me to an auto body who referred me to HM Motorsports. I called and spoke to Ben who had me bring the car right over. The initial shock had worn off and I was in tears by the time I arrived. Everyone is the shop was soooo kind and assured me they could remove the paint without damaging the car. Given the extensive amount of spray paint that was on the car, I wasn't sure that would be possible. I left the car with them at 4pm on Tuesday - at 10am on Wednesday I returned to pick it up and couldn't believe my eyes. The spray paint was gone - completely GONE! I have a very detailed grill on the front of my car which I was prepared to replace but they were able removed every trace of the paint. If you go to San Fransisco, you'll normally seek out the backstreet hole-in-the-wall eateries or strange foodcarts looking for that "authentic" experience, avoiding such places as Whole Foods, McDonalds, Walmart, ect. You want the real deal, and it's not easy to find. H&M Motorsports is the real deal. After my 2013 GTI passed that 30,000 mile marker, I started looking around for non-dealer resources for procedures I had not the tools nor the time to complete (anything more than changing my oil and airing my tires--I live in an apartment on a hill, I can't get much done there). I'd like to say I built a relationship at this little shop over time, and through many purchases and much time spent there, they've earned my trust and respect, but that's not really true. I had a string of bad luck with some gnarly roads and my 35,000mi+tires weren't having any of it. After shopping around to find some budget all-weather boring tires mounted and balanced for about $490, I stopped by H&M and asked around. Matt pricematched the competing offer with better tires on the spot, and had them installed in less than 2 hours. After the tires were on and a day later, I noticed my center cap had fallen out or been forgotten, so H&M comped my a new one from the dealer as soon as they could order one. No fuss, just making it right. When I failed to torque the drain-pan plug and I called H&M in a panic, thinking I'd lose all my oil and have to undo all the work I did myself (trying to save some money)--not so. Again, Matt offered to slot me in to have it checked the next day. When I arrived the following day, the shop was dark and almost closed (my own poor timing), and the front desk clerk was dressed to leave--but he still dropped everything to pull my leaking hatchback into the garage where the one remaining technician was able to tighten the plug to spec in less than 15 minutes... and all at no charge. When I asked what I owed, the rep who was about to leave said "You could leave us a review, that's always helpful!" and shook my hand. I'm no stranger to the service industry and retail/customer-involved trade, so I know it's rare to discover a shop that can flex and make exceptions for customer with no purchasing history. H&M have hooked me up and saved my amateur ass more than once, so thanks guys. Keep it up, and I'm coming back when I can afford to splurge a little on some fun go-fast parts. read more

H-M Motorsports is my go to place when Derek (my car, yes I have a name for my car - so don't hate =P) needs maintenance! They service cars from Volvo, Mazda and Volkswagen (and probably more since these are the only brands of cars every time I come and visit). What I love about H-M (not to be mistaken for the clothing store H&M) Motorsports is that they take pride in getting the service done and they take care of the customers! They take appointments, but they also take walk-ins if they're not to busy or the job is a fast fix. I recommend making reservations though for your car. They are cheaper than going to a dealer. I'm not sure by how much, but I trust their work since Derek has been coming here for 2 years and has been in good hands! They have their own waiting lounge area if you want to hang out. There's a couple couches and comfy chairs. They also have complimentary snacks and beverages for their customers! There's some fruit (apples & bananas), cookies, donuts, coffee and water. In addition, they have a vending machine if you'd like soda or some typical vending machine snacks. On the wall, there's a huge flatscreen TV, where you can watch whatever you want (typical regular channels). There is a unisex bathroom available as well. The place is well kept and wouldn't mind waiting here if needed. If you need a hitch to your destination, they offer a courtesy shuttle. I believe there is also discounts to rent a car (if needed). But what I like about this location is that they are close to the MAX/Light Rail train station, so you can ride public transportation (if you dare to be exposed to the crazies - I believe it's the public transportation that keeps Portland WEIRD!!!!) home or work or whatever. H-M Motorsports will be glad to give you a couple free vouchers so you don't have to worry about shelling out a couple dollars for that. The only downside to this place is that they are only open Monday through Friday (7am - 5pm). It sucks when my only free days are on the weekends and I have to plan a weekday route for me to be carless during the week. I know you can also do a drop off of your car if you're unable to meet them at business hours. I've never done that so you may want to inquire about that specifically. Other than that, these guys do a superb job on handling your vehicle and needs! I don't mind coming back here for Derek's maintenance! read more

I haven't had anything major done here. They installed my tires (purchased online), aligned them, and put in nitrogen (at my request). I have been getting my oil changed here and they will top off my nitrogen for free. My last oil changed seemed to take a while (an hour or so). But when I check out, it's nice that they let me know how my alignment is and how my tire wear is. They've been great. Lastly, I didn't realize the H-M stood for Herzog-Meier. I have a Mazda, and have taken my Mazda to H-M Mazda for oil changes and general upkeep. So when I received a survey from Mazda, for H-M Motorosports, well, that was interesting. Guess it doesn't matter if I take it to them or Mazda. Granted, H-M Motorsports is WAY less salesy (if at all) than the Mazda dealership. Free drinks, snacks, and tv are always great. read more

Well, I have a long, boring story about my car troubles... I'll skip that and just get to the good stuff. After a few issues with another mechanic, and finding out that my Scion xD (that I bought in 2011 at HM) was still under warranty, I called up HM Motorsports to have them take a look. Ron was extremely helpful - and has a dry sense of humor, too. I left the car there overnight to get a new alternator put in, and he called when necessary to keep me updated. The whole warranty process was a breeze. My car is running great now. I think the hardest thing to find is a mechanic you really trust - especially if you're not a "car guy." After my few conversations with Ron, he strikes me as an honest and dependable person - and I'm seriously thinking about going back to HM again if my car needs any major work, even though I live WAY on the other side of town. I called this company and spoke to someone who said I can bring my vehicle in today but it will be a few days before they can get to it. That is fine. I thought he was upfront, courteous, nice on the phone. He gave me an estimate of $125 to fix the leak in the drainage system for my vehicle because it has a sunroof/moonroof (its mechanical). I hope that $125 is not too much/ I have no clue. They said if it were more they would let me know first. I will post again after this visit and work to let everyone know their rating. I have taken a lot of vehicles to these guys to do performance parts installation and that's what this review is going to be based off of. I will start with the relatively good things about these guys then move to the cons. Their waiting room is nice. They have coffee, water, and cookies available to anyone for free. They also have a vending machine for drinks. The people here are pretty friendly and professional (to a certain extent.) They have a single bathroom that is unisex in nature and is usually clean and smells good. The last good thing is their schedule, they can usually get someone in within a decent time. Typically within a week. I know that seems small but trying to get performance parts installed is sometimes a couple weeks out with other places. Unfortunately that's about where the good stuff ends. My big frustration with these guys is the lack of customer service and knowledge/experience. The knowledge and experience part again is for performance parts. They appear to have one knowledgeable tech that can actually install the parts within a reasonable amount of time. I'm not talking about full on crazy builds but simple things like a downpipe, intake, catback exhausts, etc. There have been MANY times where I call and leave a message either via voicemail or talking to someone and they leave a message for someone and I don't get a call back for either a day or a couple of days. I understand being busy but there is a certain lack of customer service from this shop that is quite baffling. There is no reason why I shouldn't be able to be called back same day for a question about scheduling. Every vehicle I have brought to these guys (4) I have had some sort of issue with them, typically customer service oriented but a couple of times parts not being installed correctly. Last time I had work done, I ordered an intake, they said it was in stock, I setup an appointment for the next day to have it installed. The next day I called before coming in to make sure the intake was actually there and they said it was and that we were good to go. I get there and after an hour goes by, they come in and tell me that they have the wrong intake for the car. AFTER an hour. This goes to show their lack of knowledge and experience as well as customer service. So they get me setup for the next day with the correct intake. They charge me for an hour and a half of labor but it only takes the tech less than 30mins to install it even though they at that point wasted a full days work for me. They did cut me $30 of labor but that doesn't make up for losing an entire day of work. Now as I sit in their waiting room for 5hrs for a job that realistically shouldn't take more than an hour and a half (they say 2hrs labor) I have decided that I will PROBABLY not give these guys any more business and go else where. I feel I have given them MORE than enough chances to show me that their errors are more than just flukes but here we are. read more

I'd like to give H-M Motorsports a higher rating because I think it was maybe bad luck, but nonetheless it was inconvenient having my car sit in their shop an extra two days and over the weekend because parts weren't available. I originally took my car in for scheduled maintenance and I was told my CV boots were cracked and that it would be a good idea to replace them as soon as possible. I needed to get to work, so I dropped off my car the next day (Wednesday) at 5:30pm for the CV boot replacement. There was a sign on the door saying they had closed early for an employee function. I thought fair enough, I'll just drop the key in the overnight slot, no problem. Well, let's just say my car wasn't ready until the next Monday because parts weren't available. I understand bad things happen, but this was inconvenient for my whole family, i.e. getting to work and the kids to daycare... We've got two cars for a reason. A couple years ago H-M Motorsports diagnosed a check engine warning light as a loose gas cap at no charge and sent me on my way. That's why I brought my car in for scheduled maintenance. Recently, when my starter went out over the weekend, I had my car towed somewhere else after checking Yelp. Those guys were terrific and I gave them a great rating. read more

I had multiple services performed at once and I am very happy with the end results. I had new wheels and tires installed, my windows tinted and TCU and ECU tunes performed. Matt helped me find the tires and wheels, providing great service and knowledge. Mindy helped me with the tuning options and she coordinated all of the work so that it would be completed on time. I purchased a subwoofer for my 2016 VW beetle and had these guys install it with little issue, after a while I needed to sell the car and wanted the sub put into my newly purchased 2014 Beetle. (Compatible for both model years) I was informed I needed a "connector" and was forced to leave my car overnight for what was supposed to be a 4-6 hour job. After scrambling around for some connector that turned out to not be sold separately from the kit I originally purchased, I figured out that the team never gave me this "connector" when they originally installed it for me and it wasn't necessary in the newer model. Ended up getting charged an extra $60 for the ordeal and got basically denied when I told them they lost it originally. (FOLLOW UP) I was contacted after I made a review and the owner was very helpful with getting this resolved. read more

He even called Enterprise on my behalf when they were delayed in picking me up with my rental. The results on my car were amazing - it looked better than when I bought it, and the detail I ordered on my car made it look brand new inside. My ' 05 Dodge Magnum developed a leak that I noticed as water in the left rear cargo compartment so from a recommendation I brought the car into HM Motorsports about the problem. Their technician Ben diagnosed it as a blocked drain from the sunroof. Ha was able to access and clear fir needles from the drain which took care of the problem and I have a dry car again! From bringing my vehicle in to the excellent work that was done and the pleasant checkout when my car was ready to be picked up I'm glad that I found this shop to do business with. read more

Nov 9th I went in for burning 1qt of oil per 500 miles. Was told my pcv was bad with no evidence when asked. I asked about rings since it's the most common problem for 2.0t if this model. I was told that was not the case from john mindy and from them speaking for the tech that compression was good witch ment rings were good and I was wrong. Nov 21 they get me back in for a oil consumption test they didn't want to even do. In 220 miles I came back losing 1.5 qts of oil. Again telling me it's not rings it has good compression "master tech certified" - John and Mindy Nov 29th I had to call John and get the invoice for that visit so I could send it to the warranty company since they couldn't figure out how? When I explained to the warranty company what had been going on and what I've been dealing with they were very quick to okay the fix since they were missing all the evidence of the issue from HM.12/9 car dropped off. Was told 1 to 1.5 weeks12/22 mindy said car would be done 12/23 weather depending we got bad weather a d holidays 12/27 waiting on a part ( cv boot ) to show up. Should be done tomorrow-mindy12-29 mindy- car is being finished was running road tested and was back on the lift giving it a look over, waiting on payment from warranty company. I personally called the warranty company and was told HM has not sent over anything since 12/9. Mindy amd John were confused saying they had. John was very rude stating it had been faxed and I had to wait. 12/30 warranty company put me on hold to call to confirm payment when she had said who she was she said she was hung up on. Mindy and John's reaction to my accusation of that showed how true it was. When I arrived John had explained that he had lied and that since 12/29 the car was being worked on for a leaking crank seal after reassembly. Infront of another customer mindy walked outside and began to talk badly on me. She didn't know my mother was outside. John was angry and very rude about having to admit to lying about the car being finished and awaiting payment that clearly was all lies. Was told I could be done that day MAYBE. Never received a call. 12/2 I call at 12 and mindy said cars finished and I can come get it. When I arrived my car was covered in hand prints, I paid signed and left. John and Mindy and very unprofessional.I will give the mechanic the benefit as I know his work isn't there actions. read more

I hate to give these guys two stars. They took me same day when my car window was broken out by a criminal. The guy I talked to was super nice. So why am I giving them 2 stars? Because i specifically paid an extra 50-60$ for them to clean up the broken glass. I'm STILL finding broken glass, and this happened at Halloween. Make sure you double and triple check the quality of work before you leave the lot. When I called they just offered to go over it again when I came back for window tint on the new window. Guess what, I live on the opposite side of town, and I'm not giving more business to somewhere that can't get the job done right the first time. read more

This is a great shop. Today I brought in my 2015 Audi S3 for some APR upgrades. They did a Stage 1 ECU high torque tune and the TCS tune at the same time. It turned out better than my expectations, in fact I was totally unprepared to have my eyeballs sink into my skull when they taught me how to use the launch control features and couldn't be happier. The staff at H-M Exceeded My Expectations. Every staff member was polite and very pleasant. I showed up an hour early for my appointment and they were very busy. They quickly checked me in and then escorted me to the waiting area. I was was pleasantly surprised at how clean and spacious the waiting area was. I cannot say enough good things about the quality of service and customer support provided by H-M Motorsports!! They are reasonable in cost and yet excel at customer service and quality. I have a 2-yr old Honda CRV which I have to take to Honda for warranty work. However, 6 months ago I went to there for a full detail service that was exceptional!! Additionally, I had asked them if they could fix a big white scratch in my deep green colored driver side door. Honda had quoted me $500+ dollars to fix. So H-M Motorsports and their "miracle worker" staff fixed is as part of the detail service by just a deep buff! Then last week I went in to get an estimate on their repair of white scratches on my front bumper. So in their review of the scratch, the technician I call "the miracle worker", came out with a cloth with some solution and wiped right off! No charge... with a smile! I WILL CONTINUE to come back to H-M Motorsports for my auto detailing and any service not covered by Honda's warranty. I originally got to H-M Motorsports because of multiple Yelp positive reviews. I will never take my car to any other shop as long as I live in Beaverton. When I broke my car this was the second shop I took my car to. The first place did not communicate with me very much and actually avoided my calls when they realized more was wrong with my car than initially discussed. Ron is great. Not only did he call me with updates, but before we got off the phone he told me when to expect another call from him and he called when he said he would. I have never experienced such poor customer service and quality of work in my life. I will never take my car back to them, even though it is right down the road from my work and the shuttle service is very convenient. I had to take my Volvo into their shop five times for the same problem. They said that they performed work that they did not do and I believe they over charged me in labor hours to make up the cost of their mistakes. As you can tell, I am not a very big fan of them now, and I want to warn people who are looking for a good auto shop from making the same mistake that I did in choosing HM Motorsports. read more
