I come here every now and again and I'm never disappointed. For value and size it really can't be beat. Pretty much every thing I've ordered comes in an amazing portion! Service is friendly and about as quick as it gets fresh fried. It's not a place I would eat in, but you can definitely expect me back for take out. I really like the fried zucchini, personally. On a Tuesday afternoon, I stopped by H. Salt Esq Fish & Chips in San Jose because I wanted to support a long-standing local business. This is a business that has been around for nearly 58 years as of this review. I ordered the #11 combo (1 fish filet, 2 shrimp, 2 oysters, 2 scallops 'n chips) ($16). Just a heads up: the online prices aren't up-to-date with the prices I saw, so expect some differences when you get there. Overall, the experience was very no-frills and straightforward. My order was impressively portioned, and the fish filet in particular was generous in size. I've definitely had better fish & chips elsewhere, but for the value, this holds up. The batter is light and crunchy, but pretty plain and not really seasoned. The seafood itself is good quality across the board. The scallops were a standout, while the shrimp were more on the softer side. Personally, I wished the shrimp were more firm. The oysters tasted fresh, but be careful. The moment I took a bite, the oyster splashed hot liquid onto my friend! The "chips" come intentionally unsalted, but you can ask for salt and pepper. They also provide tartar sauce, malt vinegar, and ketchup. The tartar sauce is decent, though I personally wish it had a bit more dill or relish, and maybe a larger portion. A couple small notes: lemons are 50 cents each, and parking is easy. The customer service is excellent. There is indoor seating. All in all, it's a simple, old-school spot. Saw the good reviews and decided to order some fish & chips, calamari, zucchini, mushroom and artichoke. The order was delivered fairly quickly and was packaged nicely in a big box. This place is a San Jose institution! I've tried Anchors and other fish & chips from other trendy, new places , but I still find this place to be the best. Food: 5/5 I love the batter , it's crispy and airy, a perfect vehicle for the buttery, flakey fish. I usually get the family order for 6 fish and 1 fry, we prefer to swap out the fries for the zucchini. I remember the old H. Salt on Meridian from many years back, other than the name this wasn't comparable. I placed my order using their website, and the order was never sent to the store. Apparently this is a regular thing, as she explained someone has to forward the orders to them. She was friendly and apologetic. She reviewed my email confirmation on my phone and prepared all of the items ordered. Took about 10 minutes for it to be ready. We enjoyed the food and the fish portions were massive, I ordered an 8 piece with fries and between 5 of us we couldn't finish it. We did try a few other menu items as well; artichokes, zucchini, mushrooms, catfish, coleslaw. Everything was good. If it weren't for the food and the service this would probably be a 2 star review. It's bland like how most UK food can be, however the tartar sauce with lemon wedge fixes that. Huge portions, for the price point is something rare these days in SJ. This food is crunchy when you eat it there. Shop got seats, a cooler to pick drinks and art work all around. It's got personality for all the oil. Shop has plenty of parking for now, a new market is opening soon. I always get my order accurately and fish comes out surprisingly fast. It's easy to just pay and walk out. This spot has always been my family and I's go-to fish and chip spot especially for those no meat Friday days. It's a little hole in the wall restaurant in east San Jose. The area can be a little sketch so be aware of your surroundings, but nonetheless--the fish and chips always hit. The fish is soft and the batter is nice and crispy. Not oily at all. Fries are standard, but still good. The pieces of fish are big and the batter on the fish really holds up and doesn't get soggy quick. It's made fresh and you can tell they're right out of the fryer. I love dipping it in the tarter sauce and vinegar. Another favorite are their fried zucchini's which are fried perfectly as well. I also requested a two piece fish and chips!... I also got a side dish of artichoke hearts, and an order of zucchini... Castroville is the heart of California for artichokes.. If you never had artichoke hearts, please try them fried here at the fish and chips or get them marinated in a jar. They are absolutely terrific... They all arrived still warm to the touch and not soggy, which were fried orders is a . Big Whoopie..... For all those, think the fish and catfish taste the same are sadly mistaken... the catfish has a distinct flavor compared to the regular fish that they use and is both quite different and best in their own way... I also got the artichokes which is the artichoke hearts... I've been coming here off and on throughout the years. This is the last remaining one in the Bay Area, as the others on Meridian and Almaden have long been gone. This location is in East SJ in a shopping center with Food Maxx, close to Pizza Hut. The decor is the same as when it was first opened up, like the inside of a ship. The store is weathered or has weathered the competition of other fish and chip restaurants. Yet, it's still around! This IS a hole in the wall place (still). Service is nice and friendly! Still big pieces of flaky fish inside a crispy batter. The oil seems to be changed regularly. The chips are nice and hot. They have a nice crisp exterior, but the inside is soft and fluffy. Unfortunately, I went there a couple days ago. I also went a few times I think last month no problems but this time I ended up getting a slightly ill had an upset stomach. I won't say it's food poisoning because it wasn't that serious but I do get an upset stomach and I think it was from the tartar sauce because I realized the tartar sauce was dairy runny and very warm but you know I eat it anyway like everybody else was doing so needless to say I had an upset stomach for several hours, but it's all good so I'm not sure. For the amount of food, the price is pretty good. I ordered the platter which includes a little bit of everything. (Fish, shrimp, scallop, oysters, and fries ). Everything had a great crispiness to it. The shrimp was a bit dry. They butterfly it and then fry, I think if left whole, it would have maintained moist. Everything was very bland, including the dipping sauce. I couldn't tell if it was suppose to be tartar or ranch.... I also got the clam chowder. There wasn't much flavor either. It tasted mostly of cream and potato. I had to add salt to it. If there was a bit more seasoning to everything, I think this place would be great, because by far this has the best crispy batter. read more

Ah, memories of H.Salt. The wood paneling remains which is cool. Since there were so few of us in the party, we ordered the fish only family meal. As other reviewers wrote, for the price, the portions are generous. The fish itself was tasty but is lot skinnier than what I remember. But honestly, as compared to other Fish & Chips places, the fish pieces were of good size. The batter was quite light and very crispy - almost tempura like. It was not oily. The chips have little heft to them - these are not french fries. They don't quite qualify as real chips - but I like them. I guess they're more like thick cut fries. My only regret about this place is that the malt vinegar was provided in little plastic tubs. You can always ask for more, but the iconic bottle on the table is no more. I took it to-go and it came wrapped securely in a thick paper bag. This package was super hot to hold, and I knew it was fresh out of the fryer! It came with 3 small plastic containers of tartar sauce and one small container of malt vinegar. Dang, this was the best fish and chips I've had in a very long time!!! They were super crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The fish is sooo big that it was more than enough to share with my husband. There are many other fish items to choose from as well; shrimp, clam strips, calamari strips, oysters, scallops, catfish, plus sides of clam chowder, zucchini, mushrooms, artichokes, onion rings, hushpuppies, jalapeno peppers w/cheese, egg rolls, potstickers and cole slaw.
