We've been to sushi joints in Lamorinda, PH, WC and Concord, but looked to yelp to help us find new places in Alamo, Danville and Pleasanton to venture out. Closest to WC is Alamo so we decided to try out Haru-Sushi. I read all the yelp postings to find out that the owners are Koreans who originally had a restaurant in Vallejo. Next we"ll try Koji's in Danville and Sato's in Pleasanton. We were disappointed. This place caters to the American taste (No Asian patrons when we were there); the albacore sushi was cut like a piece of flank steak, the salad was drenched in a heavy mayonaise dressing, the miso soup was lukewarm and the overall bento presentation looked dismal. Bowls of noodle ranged from $10-$13! The tea that they served for free was tasteless. The dining room is small and the acoustics are bad. We've been curious to try this place, but will not return. read more

I truly wanted to like this place. Since no business is perfect, I usualy "move on" when I have bad experience in a restaurant, every place can have an "off day" however, this restaurant crossed the line, serving poor quality food at a high price. Using low quality ingredients such as instant flavoring for the soup broth, low quality scraps and fish trimmings for the sushi rolls, knowingly incorporating fish "silver skin" and scraps into the rolls to save money on unsuspecting consumers. The service staff is very nice, polite and hospitable, I really feel sorry for them, it is a shame that the food is not near the level of the pleasent service. read more

Absolutely terrible experience here for the second time in a row now. First time was missing most of the order and there was nothing they were willing to do except have us drive all the way back. Partially my fault for not checking so we went back tonight. A lady who works there was extremely rude and impatient while getting my pick up order. I believe it was the same lady that was once again extremely rude on the phone the last time. We've eaten here several times and it's ok but not great. The best thing about it is that it's in Alamo. The last time we went, we ordered the Danville roll. It cost about $18 but I thought we'd splurge because it had lobster. The lobster was very salty and I couldn't even eat it. That was just a waste of money. I complained to my server and she offered me complimentary green tea ice cream but I declined. I guess I should be grateful that they offered me something but I suggested that they remove that inedible roll from their menu. Ok Sushi It was really hard to see into this place like it was some kind of sex shop in SF. LOL. Anyway, the tint keeps the place cooler. Friendly staff, with an overtly friendly hostess. Sushi good for being in a place called Alamo, but maybe I am spoiled by SF. Yeah, totally. I asked if they had Toro and they had none. Toro is a staple. This place is good enough to come again. If you order sashimi be aware of what you order as ours came on a bowl of rice which I am not use too. We order 4 rolls and tempura veggie & shrimp. I came here Saturday night 2/3/18. Service was wonderful but the food was just not good :( I ordered a lion king and it tasted like mayonnaise and that's pretty much it. I couldn't even eat it. We went home and ordered pizza after being frustrated with the food. I order Lion King at nearly every sushi restaurant we go to so I know what the expected result is. We won't be coming back. Sushi is good and pricing is fair! They have a very large selection of rolls which I liked as well as a larger menu. I enjoyed everything we ordered ( miso soup, seaweed salad and 2 rolls)... what really added to this rating was the staff... they were so friendly and attentive! I came here with my boyfriend and we thought this place was amazing. Staff was really nice and seemed on top of everything. The food was delicious and they gave us some complimentary fruit with our meal. I thought this would be my new favorite sushi restaurant. However when I got home I started to feel sick. I figured I just ate a little to much since we did order Aa lot of food. Then my boyfriend texted me saying he was throwing up so it wasn't just me. If I could give them 10 stars I would. We stopped by New Year's Eve and the place wasn't busy at all. They service was excellent and the food was awesome. The sushi came out quickly and was fresh considering how much we order. We ordered a combo plate of teriyaki chicken and all shrimp tempura. The chicken was a huge order and enough to share. The shrimp were sweet and fried just right. My other son ordered the maguro dinner and was pleased. I guess I stupidly thought there would be a variety of tuna but he was happy with it. My husband and I ordered the tekka maki rolls, California roll, Alamo roll, kamikaze roll and the lemon tree roll. Each and every single piece was delicious. It was the first time I didn't walk out of a sushi place feeling stuffed and like a glutton. The lemon tree roll isn't a fat roll so that really made the difference. We also ordered the green tea ice cream and the tempura fried vanilla ice cream. Definitely will be returning. read more

The fish is incredible and they always have a great variety of fish. If the Toro is available you are in for a real treat and you must try the Alamo roll! The rice is also amazing and really great sushi must always have great rice. The portions are so much bigger than you get anywhere in the" big name" sushi bars in the City. Just perfect. Food is fresh and delicious... but there are many sushi options in the tri-valley. Service here is what really keeps us coming back over the others. Sushi is always amazingly fresh, and the sushi bar itself is impeccably clean. I love how the sushi chef explains the specials to us each time.. and with pride! He is proud of the dishes he's creating, it's great to see. We always sit at the bar and the sushi chef deal with us directly, but the servers still check on us and are attentive. We tend to dine late, and they are always so accommodating. Never rushing us out the door if I haven't finished my sake at closing time. I hate to say this because Ken is such a great sushi chef but I will never go there again. He used to own Nezumi in Vellejo,CA and I have had so many nights there where we closed down the joint pissed drunk. The food was amazing and the staff made the experience so much fun. At Ha-Ru there is no quality control because their other sushi chefs are not at Ken's level, I will pay a high price but I demand quality all across the board. The service they had at Nezumi cannot be beat, Ha-Ru doesn't have a Maddy. She is customer service. There is a definite lack of knowledge and experience with the staff at Ha-Ru. read more

To me, Ha Ru is not the place to go when you want really top of the line, pristine sushi. But because it is very conveniently located, and because you can get in there on a weekend night without waiting for hours, I end up there. I have come to rely on their teriyaki Chicken dinner entree. The teriyaki glaze is nice and thin and tastes like it is made from scratch. The beer selection is not great, but they offer a couple of nice chilled sakes I have been known to enjoy. If we get an app, we go with the tempura vegetables- nothing earth shattering, but good. I would like to try some of their other non-sushi items, like the eel or the udon soup, but I can never resist the chicken teriyaki and always end up ordering it. Ha Ru has a very friendly Chinese staff. I didn't hear a word of Japanese. The wife had the California Roll and another roll with unagi. Ok but not even close to Kane in Danville. IM ALL ABOUT VALUE THESE DAYS! Do try the chicken teriyaki and stay away from the traditional japanese dishes like Donburi. These dishes are better left for more traditional places. read more

Good sushi. Fresh fish. and I have been to enough places to know the quality of their fish. Ken, the chef was great. He would ask you what kind of fish you liked and would make you something on the spot. The fish was fresh and tasty. Just talking about it makes me hungry. I can't wait to go again. Incredible fish. I have tried it many times. I considered 4 stars because the place needs a little updating and the staff is very busy sometimes, but the fish is so fresh and very high quality that I must give it 5 stars. I feel if this place were in a major city rather than Alamo the people would be lined up out the door over the quality of the fish and would not care about it being a little outdated or overly busy. Yes it needs updating and more staff some days, but the quality of the food is excellent and shouldn't that count more, ESPECIALLY when eating raw food. read more

This was my first dining endeavor at Ha-Ru, a great place for social sushi. Having lived in NYC and SoCal, I must admit I immediately developed a fancy for this new Alamo joint. The staff are friendly, entertaining, and attentive. The decor is authentic Asian. As for the food, there are some clever rolls on the menu. Try the Lover roll, my personal favorite. And feel free to indulge in lots of wasabi...like I did! :) Ha-Ru has become a new hotspot and I will definitely return as often as possible to soak in good eats and great people. Beware of the pricing with the specials. The specials were reviewed with us and they sounded great but we both just wanted some Udon. The one special that did sound good was an appetizer; a Guacamole sashimi with a special "Japanese" sauce that the fish marinaded in for "15" hours. When I asked what type of Japanese sauce it was, our server said it was special. I pressed for the ingredients and she would not tell me.. Now, I'm not a food critic nor am I trying to get their secrets, but what if I was allergic to something? It sounded good anyway so I ordered it...and it was delicious. The regular appetizers on the menu range from $4.95 to a hi of $12.95..so I felt I knew what the maximum exposure would be. When the bill came this appetizer was a whopping $20.95!!!... Now I can see why they didn't quote prices with the specials!!!! And my bad for not asking in the first place, but I already knew the price ranges of the appetizers so felt my maximum exposure was probably the $12.95. The udon noodle and broth were well prepared. I sure hope they lose the arrogance... can you imagine telling someone that you had a secret "American" sauce?? If they want to make it in Alamo, they should disclose ALL specials pricing up front and skip the arrogant attitude about not disclosing ingredients when directly asked. read more

This is our go to Sushi hang out in Alamo. The fish is always fresh, served in generous portions, tasty rolls, and they offer a good selection of specials such as toro, aji, etc. The servers and sushi chefs are steady; they learn your preferences, anticipate your needs, and make suggestions you'll enjoy. For those less adventurous, the yakitori, teriyaki, and tempura are all delicious. The restaurant is clean and comfortable but not fancy. Expect to see locals and repeat customers here - a good place for sushi, great place to return. read more

I should have written this review months ago!!! I'm the ultimate sushi lover and this place has most certainly won my business! I've been a handful of times now, and every time the fish is fresh, and the rice is perfectly cooked. That's always my biggest complaint when trying out new sushi spots. HaRu is definitely my go to place when it comes to sushi! There are plenty of great things I can say about Haru, and I could certainly write a very long review but I will keep it short and sweet. The fish at HaRu is the freshest and best looking fish I have had at any sushi place. The fish is always presented very well and tastes even better then it looks. It has a very fresh flavor and wonderful texture. The rolls are made perfectly with just the right amount of rice to compliment the rest of the roll. I have had rolls at other places where it's ALL RICE-Yuck! The owner Ken and his staff do a wonderful job of making you feel like your having lunch or dinner in their very own home! They are very attentative and always have a smile for you. Overall I just love going to HaRu for good people and GREAT sushi! My fiance and I waited a long time before we were even given a menu or asked what we would like to drink. However, after ordering our food was served very quickly. Nice ambiance and TVs to watch whatever sports game are on that night. The tempura was a little bit greasy but their sushi rolls were fresh and tasted great. read more
