What a complete disappointment! It's been awhile and I was excited to enjoy the Santa Barbara Char. Besides the patty being so tiny it was flavorless. The onions were barely grilled and thrown on so that most were in the box not on the burger. The burger meat was crumbled . Prices are too high for a barely mediocre burger. The teriyaki char had crushed pineapple which made it juicy. The half fries and onion rings were really fresh and good just a little bit of onion rings. You get a sauce with the side and mine was BBQ. I tried both drinks with the lime. The strawberry and the dragon fruit. Got one of those random coupons in the mail for The Habit - free double char burger with any $4 purchase. Had to see what the hype was about. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this Alameda location, but that first visit totally changed my mind. The double char burger actually lived up to its name with real smoky flavor that you just don't get at most fast-casual spots. The beef was meaty and substantial, though they could've melted the cheese better. Buns were perfectly soft and squishy. Paired it with tempura green beans and those were seriously delicious, especially with ranch. Way better than regular fries. Comparing it to In-N-Out since everyone asks - they're pretty different. In-N-Out has slightly higher quality overall, but The Habit wins on flavor because of that smokiness and char. It's got more personality. Second visit was more mixed. Used another coupon for the chicken club sandwich, which was tasty enough. Nice toasted bread, decent chicken breast, but the avocado was gray and oxidized - kind of gross. The bacon wasn't amazing quality but still good. Also tried their tempura avocado wedges out of curiosity. Cool concept, but way too much fat. Like, frying fat and dipping it in ranch? My stomach wasn't having it after a few bites. The place gets pretty busy but moves fast. Was in the area with a friend and we stopped in for a quick and light lunch. We both got the Cobb Salad (about $13) and a side of green bean fries and sweet potato fries to share. Cobb salad usually comes with grilled chicken but you can substitute it with either fried chicken or more avocado. I opted for fried chicken. I enjoyed the quick and healthier options that Habit Burger has, besides their hamburgers. The salad had good ingredients and portion size is decent. It's located in a newish shopping center right next to a Panda Express. I do love me a Double Charburger with cheese and add those free grilled onions! I ordered and my order was up quick. I specifically asked that the cheese be melted, cause I've had problems with getting cold cheese slices before. The burger came out and the cheese was melted! The rest of the burger was assembled nice and the grill onions were added as asked. Here's a tip on eating one of these fab burgers. To get more of the grilled charburger taste, just eat the burger with the meat side down on the bottom as you stick that burger in your mouth! Yeah, eat it flipped upside down. Habit is just around the corner and is one of the next closest restaurants. I'd say its similar to Nations in many ways - but the food quality and ambiance is much much better. Unique sides and more comfortable yet no formality or extra time wasted with servers. Right as you enter you immediately put in your order in on one of the many self serve tablets. If you prefer to talk to somebody there is that too - but you might wait for a person or two first. I had a chicken burger. It had bacon and avocado and on toast bread. I thought it had a great taste - and no strange flavors or over salted like you can sometimes get elsewhere. Chicken tasted pure and without unnecessary preservatives. It was pure chicken and just enough flame broil taste. Interesting sides like Tempura green beans and cauliflower makes the experience much better and differentiates this restaurant from many of the others that just serve fries. If you have a chicken avocado burger and vegetable sides I'm sure its much better for you than the typical burger joints. The ambiance was modern, clean and comfortable. Booths added to the comfort and experience. Very cozy to sit along a wall in a booth rather than on a table in the middle with foot traffic buzzing behind and around you. I am sad because my favorite salad here has gone down hill. The Caeser with tenderloin was my go to but now it's more than half filled with lettuce spines which is not nutritious. This is probably because the restaurant has to limit the number of people in the place (due to Covid-19). Avoid all that by pre-ordering and takeout. Ok, how was the food? The Bacon Char Burger, Grade (3/5): It was a little too salty, and it overpowered the bacon flavor. I think I asked for light seasoning, this was not light. Hamburger 101: when you flip the patty, and the juices emerge, you season the meat lightly. Onion Rings, Grade (5/5): Very delicious, crispy, lightly seasoned onion rings! Almost perfect. (The grade of perfect belongs to a burger joint in Oakland). These were lightly crisp and delicate. The onion flavor was clean. Those were probably clean fry vats. This location is always dirty and incredibly slow. The staff is always preoccupied on their phones and joking amongst themselves and the food is always cold. Today was the last straw! I have never witnessed such a bizarre and gross display of "customer service." The manager, Alejandro, went out of his way to be rude and disrespectful to my sister. She ordered food at the kiosk, after all of the staff (on their phones) ignored her as she stood at the register. After ordering, we waited about thirty minutes for the food to arrive. A staff member asked for proof of payment, she showed it on her phone, yet he still wouldn't give her the order. The manager, Alejandro, again asked for proof of payment. She again showed proof. The manager took the order that he placed on the counter and walked away with it. He returned and told my sister to leave the store. She asked for the food that she paid for, and he told her "I tried to give you the food and you didn't want it- so leave!" She asked for a refund and he told her to give him her credit card info and she might receive a refund in 3-6 days. Of course she refused. For no reason at all, Alejandro refused to give my sister her paid order AND refused a refund. He then decided to ignore her to talk to another employee that walked in reeking of marijuana and visible high. Essentially, he STOLE her money! Alejandro insisted she leave the store and even seemed entertained as another customer decided to interject herself into the conversation. He refused to give her a number for HR. The fact that there are multiple reviews here detailing similar experiences with the same manager shows that those in charge of this location do not care.
