My wife and I have had our house in the Santa Cruz mountains for 6 years. We love it - except for the rats we have had in our attic. They crawl around in above our heads and in the walls as we sleep - usually between 1-4AM. It keeps us awake and makes our house feel like it is invaded. I have set traps for years and I catch a few rats and the activity dies down for a few weeks. But then they are back. And I always feel like "why do I have a second job as an rat exterminator when I get home from my day job?" So we finally decided to take a stand against our rat invaders. We contacted a firm in the east Bay that we saw an ad for in the newspaper and they came out for their "free" consult. The estimate to help us with our problem was over $4,000. The inspection seemed like a joke and the Yelp reviews on the company = 1 star. Needless to say we didn't go with this option. I looked up rat exterminators in Santa Cruz on Yelp and I found Haderle Pest Control. John, the owner, came out a few days later and did a THOROUGH inspection. His quote to fix all the rat highways into our attic and subfloor crawl space was around $600. He guarantees his work. So we scheduled for him to come and work his magic. He came out the next weekend on a Sunday (thank you for fitting us in John) and spent around 4 hours rat proofing our home and garage. He used good quality construction techniques and materials - no cheap quick fixes - and he taught me how to set traps properly to get rid of the remaining rats. He said within 2-3 weeks we should not be catching any more rats. If we were then there was some way that they were getting in that he would need to correct - and he would find that for us because he has a guarantee to rat proof our house. Well I have been checking the traps every 2-3 days since he rat proofed our house on 6/2/13. As of yesterday none of the traps set in our subfloor crawl space, attic, and garage have been tripped and they all have all the peanut butter on the trap. And we haven't been hearing the rats at night. So.... it appears we are finally rat free. Thank you John. You and your company are professional, work with integrity, and have given us our home back. Squirrels in attic making noise, chewing wood & electrical wire insulation. Jon found the entries plus a couple other vulnerable spots on the roof, high up on second story with tile roof. Installed 1 way traps to allow squirrels to exit, then closed everything. Success. Would recommend this service. Not impressed. Multiple missed appointments and he's yet to actually finish the job I paid him for (checking/collecting the rat traps and doing a final inspection). When I do get him on the phone there always seems to be an excuse for missing an appointment or not calling us back but I'm still waiting for a return call after this 2nd missed appointment. You will find NO better pest control business than Haderle Pest Control. Jon has completely eradicated the rat and skunk problems I've had for years, mostly due to my failure to deal with it at my house in Davenport. Rats and skunks had set up homes in the crawl spaces under my house (unsecured access points), had gotten into the walls and more recently into the heating ducts. Jon was very responsive when I called and has continued to be responsive, thorough and very professional through this complicated process (which began in January this year). He is an expert! He has been out 5-6 times over the past month, trapping the rats and ridding the crawl spaces, walls and heating ducts of the critters, and securing all the access spots. Through his techniques the skunks have left and did not need to be trapped (he built a cool wire tunnel opening onto a secured grate so that skunks and rats could leave but would not be able to re-enter (due to the pointy wire ends I think). He has built a variety of solutions and has returned weekly as planned (no need for me to call) to check the traps, remove dead rats and check the closed off and sealed entrances. He was at my home today and pointed out that the rats have been trying to dig under one of the sealed access points without success. I can see the pile of dug up dirt in front of the access door. Jon showed me how he had built up and fortified the door area, right down to the concrete foundation, so that the rats cannot get in regardless of their persistence. He is due to return next week for his final check-up. His rates are very reasonable! He has also been extremely kind and patient regarding my late payment. He continued to follow-up at my house on a weekly basis, as scheduled, even though he had not received a single payment after 5 visits. He has earned my complete trust and admiration! We had an ongoing problem with rats getting into our house. John Haderle was recommended to us by a neighbor after three other services failed to find where they were coming into the house from. Within ten minutes after he arrived he found their entrance, at a far back corner under a rear deck. A narrow gap existed in the foundation that could not be seen unless you crawled all the way back and looked sideways to see it. Nobody else took the trouble to crawl back there, they just looked with a flash lite and totally missed it. He really knows his business and is willing to crawl where others don't in order to solve the problem. Haderle Pest Control was great! I was in the food service business for 35 years. Keeping an active ongoing pest control program is a requirement. I have dealt with lots of different companies over the years. Mostly they do good work, but their primary purpose seems to be to rope you in to a long term contract and extract from your pocketbook what they can.. Nothing wrong with that, but there is another way. We had a mouse infestation at our home that destroyed the heating duct work below our house. Haderle came our for an inspection and identified all of the possible entry points. He gave me a surprising reasonable quote to repair all of holes and cracks the mice were using to get under the house. He returned a couple of days later to complete the work. He gave me the option of him doing return visits for the trapping or explaining to me the best way to do it myself. Since I'm not squeamish about it I decided to do the trapping. What we thought would be a simple job turned out to be more on the level of an epic quest, as the rat in our house somehow managed to steal all the bait off the traps we set for them. However, the Haderle guys wouldn't give up until they killed it, and were completely open and professional with us the entire time. They did cut open the two boards in the porch (to find out how the rat was getting in) instead of unscrewing them, as mentioned in another review, but that's something that could have been avoided with some simple communication on my part, had I known that was going to be an issue. read more

Okay, so note the date of this review. A full year AFTER most have complained about Jon "disappearing". I had this happen to me and two neighbors as well. We had Jon come by and do some eave modification to dissuade swallows from nesting (mostly worked and he did great work). But he was to return and paint the work he did for two of us - and - nothing. Several attempts to reach him and no response. I thought he might be dead, then read these reviews and it appears this is normal for him. Well, I haven't paid him and he hasn't sent a bill (not that it gets paid anyway until the work is complete). Same with one neighbor. The third paid him and her work is also incomplete. NICE guy. Exceptionally knowledgeable. GOOD work. I just wish he'd finish it. Come back, Jon! Five stars for the solution-setting and the work he's done to-date (all at his cost). Unfortunately I've had a bad experience with Haderle. He came on time and did a thorough job showing me all the holes where rats could potentially be gaining access under our house. I agreed with his price to fix these holes, but asked him in the meantime to put some traps under the house. I paid him money towards the fixing of the problems and he left, promising to return the next week. He didn't show up so I called him. He returned my call, apologized and made a new appointment. Is everything okay, John?? Have we done something to offend you? What started as a solid 5-star review has been downgraded due to recent experience. We contacted Haderle a year or so ago for issues we were having with mice. We had used a national chain before and the technician had done a lot of talking, but not a lot of work to eradicate the mice or seal (or show us how and where to seal) the areas where they were entering. After hundreds of dollars, we called Haderle because of the Yelp reviews, and he and his team were GREAT! They were dependable, efficient, friendly, helpful, and identified and sealed the areas that were highways for the mice to enter. Really good! They set traps, came back to retrieve them, set more. Checked nooks and crannies under the house and in the attic. The last time we talked to John, he said it would be $100 for them to pick up the last of the traps because of how far we live (La Selva Beach/Larkin Valley area) which seemed a bit weird since we see the company's truck(s) in our area. We've always paid him for his services promptly. We had no issues for several months, but a few months ago started hearing and seeing evidence of new infestation. We've called a few times, texted him, and written emails with no response. None. Zero. Yikes. We just hope he is doing well and, perhaps, won the lottery and left the country for a world vacation. He had a great business, was very knowledgeable, and very customer-service focused. It's sad to lose a local, hardworking service provider. They are few and far between. read more

Just an update that 2 months after Jon repaired our "mouse access" problem, we have no further observable mouse activity in the crawl space! No mice in the heating system! Nothing like a smelly dead rat under your kitchen! After confirming with PG&E that we did not have a gas leak, we called Jon. Despite a minor scheduling snafu, he showed up to do a fantastic job of determining where the critter was and going under the house to track it down and remove it.
