If you like some good Chinese cooking, this is the spot to go. Deciding to have lunch here and it was delcious. Menu had a large variety of different options. From small plates to larger entrees. Got to try a few dishes off the menu. I had the grandma noodles, spicy calamari, garlic cucumber salad, and the hot and numbing flounder stone pot. I enjoyed the grandma noodles, thick long pieces of noodles drenched in hot chili oil. It was too spicy but I did added the sauce from the flounder spice we had. The flounder hotpot had a nice kick in the spice. Great with rice and the seasoning was amazing. The garlic cucumber salad was refreshing. The calamari was okay, I would pass up on that dish. I visited the Decatur location this evening to grab a meal to go. After placing my order, I finally discovered the post Health Inspection score. The inspection was hidden behind other documents on the board. To my disappointment, the score was a "70/C". The date was the most recent.and was from May 2023. I quietly asked the gentleman who'd taken my order if that was the most recent inspection score. He boisterous responded, "It's 100!" When I asked him to provide proof he tried to convince the one I was looking at was really a "100". See the attached picture. When I refused to accept his statement as fact, he said, "You need to talk to the manager." I agreed. He then said, "There's no manager here tonight." I've never been to China, so my judgement of authentic Chinese food, I'm sure is not credible. But I liked the food, and appreciated the service even more. Location: Located in the suburban plaza off of church street, directly across from Starbucks. So beware parking is a jungle. You may have to park closer to Walmart or Ross. Because, let's be honest no one wants to get in the way of a Starbucks customer! Lol Inside: They have inside and outdoor seating. It is a small restaurant, but it's quaint. Staff are masked, and very polite. Food: I ordered grandma noodles with added tofu (basically flat rice noodles), spring rolls, and vegetable fried dumplings. Let me add whoever grandma is back there making these noodles, can she adopt me? Please!Good amount of everything and I was famished. Spring rolls come with a sweet and sour sauce and dumplings come with two sauces - not sure one could of been a tamarind sauce the other was definitely soy sauce. My only critique is if your squeamish with oil, the noodles were a little on the oily side, and there aren't a lot of vegetables. So if you need that let them know to add on. The food here is good, but I wouldn't dare eat it anymore. Each and every time I come here the health score is horrendous. The people who run this place do not care one bit about health codes or standards. Eat here at your own risk because you're probably going to get food poisoning. The best Chinese restaurant ITP?! Honestly I can see it. I think I may need to be in person to further evaluate though a take out order is solid. I think the biggest let down was the salt and pepper calamari which felt like they had put it in the microwave and then packed it up. The crispy eggplant tasted great though was not crispy, though it probably steamed from the take out packing, so not much to do there. I loved the hot and sour soup and numbing chicken! The stand outs from my order were flavorful and not spicy. I loved the Sichuan numbing flavor and the chicken had a good balance of flavor, moistness, and balanced well with the veggies. This restaurant was pretty good in many ways. The highlights included the hot plate of cabbage and the Singapore noodles. The jasmine tea was also good although nothing more than a standard teabag. The hot plate of cabbage was served sizzling. It was perfectly seasoned with a slightly spicy sauce. It was a generous sized serving. I would definitely recommend this dish if you like cabbage My Singapore noodles were ordered extra spicy but they were not. That being said, they still had an excellent flavor and texture. Cooked Al dente the noodles kept calling me back bite after bite. There were plenty of small shrimp in the dish as well as a variety of veggies. This dish would also fall into the I'd order it again column. The scallion bread was neat to look at but was quite plain tasting and too oily for my liking. The curry sauce it came with was alright. Over the past few years, I've been pretty turned off of Chinese food and honestly I couldn't even tell you why. My husband would often suggest it as a dinner option, but soon learned not to ask anymore as he knew the answer would be no. A friend of mine spoke highly of Hai which immediately sparked my interest since her husband adopts a plant based lifestyle and I often opt for similar dishes. So that friend and I decided to have a lunchtime catch up at Hai. It was the perfect lunchtime spot. Service was quick and the food was pretty delish. I ordered the General Tso's Tofu and my friend - the Mongolian beef. I thoroughly enjoyed the tofu, though thought it mimicked orange rather general tso's. I was also hoping to have more veggies than the 3 broccoli florets that were on the plate, but it was all good. Looked for a lunch special today saw this Chinese lunch. Thought I'd give it a try. First time in. I'll go back. The only thing that would rival be the quality and flavor of the food was the service which was impeccable. It was only a lunch but everyone there was most attentive to anything I needed. Recently came ITP for an event and came to Hai for a late lunch...actually tried to have lunch at Lucky Thai but they didn't do dine in and I'm glad they did not. Lunch at Hai was fantastic! I was starving so lots of food was ordered. Scallion Bubble Pancake, Stir Fried Cabbage on Iron Plate, Steam Pork Bun, and Hot and Numbing Flounder Stew. I've never had Scallion Bubble Pancake before and didn't know what to except. It was a puffed bread structure that came with a curried dipping sauce. The sauce was nice and flavorful but the pancake itself was lacking in flavor. I expected more scallion flavor. But it had great texture and held sauces nicely. Everything else was packed full of flavor. The steamed pork bun was delicious and fresh, the meat filling moist and plentiful, the dipping sauces delicious! The cabbage was amazing! It came out sizzling hot and was aggressively seasoned and included sliced chili peppers for that added pop of heat. I will order this every time I come here. Lastly, the Hot and Numbing Flounder Stew is an absolute flavor bomb and the fish wonderfully cooked and so flaky! Spicy, salty, umami...it's all there. I can't wait to try this place out again. I am genuinely surprised at the authenticity of this place since Decatur doesn't have a large Asian population. The dan dan noodles were really good. The size was somewhat on the smaller end, but it is on the appetizer section. These were in a simple peanut-like sauce (but it's actually chili oil and sesame sauce) with a little bit of tofu atop. With one chili pepper symbol, it wasn't spicy to us. The dry fried eggplant was crispy and semi-spicy. With two chili pepper symbols, you can taste the spices. We wished there were more portions of this, but then again, it was on the small plate section. These were def on par with other places minus the qty. The spicy pork knuckles were interesting. Neither of us ever had or seen this before, and it wasn't really spicy with one chili symbol. And no, it's not the pig feet but the part above it. So surprisingly, there were more meat and fat. This was def filling with the small bowl of rice as well. With the 3 dishes we shared, the hubs and I were full leaving the restaurant. The total bill was closer to $40 w/ tax and tips, but it's expected being in the area. The quality was really good with overall okay portions. Hai is in Michael's, Homegoods, Ross complex. Since I've been to Hai probably 10 more times since my last review I figured I should update it. Everything I said in the last one still stands--I still think this is the best Chinese food ITP and makes my life so much easier, since I get sad if I don't have Chinese food regularly but also can't be bothered to drive out to Duluth that frequently. At this point we go to Hai probably once a month, and is without a doubt our most regularly/frequently visited restaurant in Atlanta. We have "our order" at this point, which usually consists of grandma noodles, vegetarian steamed dumplings, mapo tofu, either dry fried string beans or dragon eggplant, and the salted duck egg custard buns. We know these are going to hit the spot every single time. This is great for two really hungry people--usually us, and we're so stuffed we feel like we have to roll ourselves back to the car--or three normal people. Outside of our typical order, though, I've also tried some other things that I think are really good! The scallion bubble pancake is a fun appetizer to share. It doesn't really taste that scallion-y and is not like a typical flaky layered scallion pancake at all, but it's a fun starter and the curry sauce it comes with is tasty. The dan dan noodles are really savory, and the fact that they manage that without meat (which is typically in the dan dan sauce) is quite impressive. The hunan style fish is also excellent, with such tender fish. I'm sure I'll have more updates at some point since we come here all the time. I love this place! read more

The Szechuan Chili Wonton were divine. The wrapped was perfectly toothsome and the shrimp/pork filling as scrumptious. The menu said 5 but I swear there were 7. The Szechuan Chili Beef was right at the border between pleasure and pain which is how it should be. The beef was cooked perfectly, and was moist and tender. I stumbled upon a recommendation for Hai by Atlanta Eats and decided to give it a try. My mother and I went and upon arrival were seated quickly. There were only two other occupied tables in the restaurant. It appeared as though they did a tremendous amount of takeout business. We ordered an entrée each and an appetizer of soup dumplings. Good soup dumplings typically take extra time to cook so the waiter asked if we would like our food before or after. I appreciated him asking and decided to wait for the soup dumplings first and then get our food when we finished the dumplings. I anticipated the wait so it was no problem. The soup dumplings were very enjoyable. They were hot and fresh. I enjoyed the flavor, too. After we finished our appetizer, they brought out rice for us both and my entrée, Furong Chicken. At this point, no one else was left in the restaurant. We waited a few minutes and still no entrée for my mother. Our original waiter never came back to check, but one of the men who dropped off the first dish noticed probably five minutes later that we still did not have the second entrée. He went back to check and said it should be coming out soon. It took at least 10 minutes between both entrées, possibly even longer. This was very disappointing as the restaurant was not busy. I was almost finished eating by the time her entrée came and honestly that is only because I really took my time. She ordered the Gold Mountain Chicken. Both dishes were very delicious. I took a trip to the restroom before leaving and although it had ample space, it really could use a good floor cleaning. Since the restaurant did not have a lot of traffic when we were there and there were several workers standing around, I really thought the restroom should have been in better shape. It was hard to decide upon a rating because the food was great, but the service and restroom brought the stars down. If half stars were allowed I probably would have went with 3.5. Hai is at Decatur district in Atlanta. It is a Szechuan cuisine restaurant. Food can be very hot. But they can tone it down per your request. The dining area is small but it has enough room during our visit. Many customers have take out orders. We started with cilantro flounder fish roll. This is fish meat in the wonton skin roll up. This is excellent dish that I have not experienced before. The second dish is the Wuhan sesame noodle. It is thick noodle with grounded sesame with pickles veggies. This dish is the Hubei delicacy. Next we have Szechuan chili wonton. The special difference is they put the sesame butter on top of wonton. The next dish is the fried fry spare rib with sweet and sour sauce. The meat is fall off the bone. It is delicious. I would recommend this dish. The spicy beef tendon. They thin slices the beef shank and cooked in chili sauce. This is also a great dish with wine. Service is good. Food is special for Chinese spicy food. We love some of the unique dishes here. read more

I'm always interested to see various Asian dining options inside the Perimeter and the pictures I saw of Hai were intriguing. We had done a lot of walking that day and were looking forward to replenishing that energy with CARBS. Hai is located in what I believe used to be Tabi Sushi, which also used to be Smoke + Duck Sauce (which means I've now eaten in this venue at least 3 times now). I had just had Szechuan food recently, although it was outside the Perimeter, so I was excited to see a potential Chinese option pop up in Decatur. We decided to order a few things to share: Scallion Bubble Pancake "Xiao Long Bao" pork soup dumplings Dan Dan Noodles Dry Fried Eggplant There was only so much food that two people could eat, so we "only" ordered 4 dishes. I've been on the search for the best soup dumplings in Atlanta. It's been difficult since... well, I haven't found them yet. These ones had thick skin, some soup inside (which is better than many I've had where the soup is literally nonexistent) and the flavor wasn't bad (I've also had XLB's filling that had a weird aftertaste). It's possible that the dumplings were light on soup since we were so busy taking pictures that the dumplings were just sitting there absorbing the soup. I've had a lot of dry fried eggplant while trying all the different Szechuan restaurants in Atlanta. Tasty China and Gu's Bistro (the OG location on Buford Highway) used to be my favorites until I tried some at Steinbeck's (I KNOW DON'T SHAME ME) that blew me away that non-Chinese could make them so authentically. Hai's weren't bad, either. They were crispy and lightly seasoned but also had the numbing spice I was looking for. The light seasoning was a bit disappointing but I still scarfed them down. All in all, I honestly wouldn't mind coming back to try some other dishes or maybe give the same dishes another go. We shop in that area every weekend and have noticed the sign for a good while. I only discovered what it was until I searched for Chinese on google on day on the couch. The restaurant is a hidden gem in a hidden little location. Who knew you could get such authentic szechuan food in Decatur ! As i tend to do I over oder when I discover a new restaurant and I am SO glad I did. Salt & pepper calamari was unique in that they were these crispy strips of lightly coated calamari. Just the right amount of heat to keep you coming back. Dry Fried Cauliflower was similar to the Pepper Salt calamari. A light crispy coating on cauliflower with scallions and cilantro. Our only vegetable :) Xia Long Bao was as good as any place on Buford Highway. The warned it would take 15-20+ min which ended up perfect as we had them to round out the meal. Steamed pork buns were very good, not the char sui that I am used to but a ground pork with vegetables and spices. Chongquing Fried Chicken was most definitely the star of the show. Have never heard of this but WOW this was delicious. This was perfectly spiced where you felt the heat but could not resist going back for more ! Hai Authentic Chinese serves some of the best Chinese food I've had in Decatur. Not that I've gone to Decatur for Chinese food a lot, but this place is pretty legit. It's the first restaurant of its type, focusing on "authentic" Sichuan cuisine, to open in Decatur and it's worth checking out if you're on this side of town. The business opened June 2019 in the old Tabi Sushi space (http://bit.ly/38ePaOy) in North Decatur's Suburban Plaza. There's plenty of parking in the plaza, but the restaurant is tucked in an awkward corner so nearby spots may be hard to come by. Two restaurants have quickly come and gone in this space: the aforementioned Tabi Sushi, opened May 2018, and the restaurant before it, Smoke + Duck Sauce (http://bit.ly/2tD5zKc), opened March 2017. These businesses only lasted about a year each. I think Hai will buck that trend. The restaurant was surprisingly busy during our rainy Monday night visit. A good sign. Plus, the food/concept is relatively less risky. Like other Sichuan restaurants around metro Atlanta, the chef at Hai (chef Wang Hai) is from the Peter Chang chef tree. The Tasty China restaurants (now three locations), Masterpiece in Duluth (http://bit.ly/3btFzW1) and Urban Wu in Buckhead (http://bit.ly/38lQGOX) are examples of other Atlanta restaurants with chefs who previously worked with Chang. Side note: Urban Wu opened February 2019, a few months before Hai, and I believe the partners/teams behind both businesses were the same at one point. Urban Wu and Hai are similar in terms of menu, taste, and general concept. For Tasty China fans (I'm a huge one), it's important to note the dishes at Hai are less intense. Chef Hai has his own unique style. This is a casual restaurant and it's not very big. It can seat about 50 customers in the dining room and another five at the bar. There's also a small patio. The interior has been renovated since its days as Tabi and it still felt relatively new and polished during our visit. There's a lot of good stuff on the menu with nearly 100 different items to choose from *and* it's not watered down with Americanized Chinese dishes. There's a strong focus on "authentic" plates, from Sichuan sliced pork ears ($10) to Xian fish and lamb casserole ($22). These are the kinds of dishes you'd expect to find on Buford Highway or in Gwinnett, not in Decatur. Expect to spend about $7-20 each for most dishes. $10 lunch specials are available Monday-Friday, 11am-3pm, but consist mostly of Americanized Chinese food. Here's what we tried: Apps * D3. Xiao Long Bao - pork soup dumplings (5 for $9) - chicken broth * D9. Wuhan Sesame Noodles ($8) - Hubei delicacy, thin wheat noodles, scallion, pickled vegetables, cilantro, hot sesame sauce Seafood * H4. Spicy Pork Knuckles ($15) - braised pork knuckles, stir-fried with chili sauce, jalapeno, celery Vegetable * V5. Dragon Eggplant in Spicy Garlic Sauce ($12) - "reimagining of a classic dish," thinly sliced eggplant, lightly spiced garlic sauce Overall, we thought the food was delicious. While nothing blew us away, the dishes were consistently good. We liked some items better than others with the spicy pork knuckles being my personal favorite. Everything in the list above, I recommend. The soup dumplings were tasty. While not the best in town (Urban Wu's was the best I've had in recent memory), they're certainly above average and worth ordering. Good size, thick and chewy skin (a little too thick, but better than too thin), served steaming hot, and savory inside. The dumplings came with the customary black rice vinegar with ginger slivers. Yum. Definitely try the Wuhan sesame noodles. It's an addictive, comfort-food-type dish with a wonderful, distinct, and different nutty flavor. I didn't find the "hot" sesame sauce to be spicy at all. The "hot and numbing" flounder stone pot was served still boiling. I ordered this dish because the kitchen was out of the Tofu Flounder Fish Ball Hot Pot (H13, $16). A classic at Sichuan restaurants, Hai's version was fine. It brought the heat (spicy), but not much numbing. Decent portions on the bite-size flounder fillets. Satisfying, flavorful broth. I highly recommend the spicy pork knuckles. The dish was a textural experience, rich in umami. It had a little bit of everything -- crispy skin, soft and rich fat and collagen, and hearty bites of lean meat. Generally, the flavor was a bit too salty for me, but otherwise this dish was excellent. The dragon eggplant is special because of the way the eggplant is cut and presented. It's appealing to the eye and tastes sweet. Service was great. The staff was polite and attentive. Binbin was our server. Our dishes came out lightning fast. It pains me to write this. It does! truly! I've been a regular at Little Bangkok on Cheshire Bridge, for, yikes, 20+ years. They even knew my preferred table: by the window. Years ago, a newer staffer was showing me to another spot, when one of the long timers gently corrected him. I've spoken briefly, enthusiastically with Madame Chef. Always gracious and friendly. A couple of weeks ago, mid January, I met friends there for lunch. I was greeted, seated, and as usual, ordered Thai iced tea. I had no idea what the bright orange, dense beverage might have been! I've not seen anything like it. Not at my beloved Little Bangkok, nor any of the Thai restaurants I've visited in (very occasionally) Atlanta, Decatur, N. Carolina, Manhattan! NYC!, of COURSE! Not Kansas. I took a couple of sips. No! No! No!!!! I spoke discreetly to the newer person: "Excuse me, please what is this? "Thai Iced Tea" Humph! Piffle! Later, I asked one of the long timers. He confirmed, and offered to make another. I declined. I'll return, of course, it's been my go-to since the early 90's. I certainly did not whine nor did I kvetch to my dining companions. I ordered the bang bang shrimp to start with and it was really good, I also had the hot and sour soup and it was below average, the gold mountain chicken is what I had for my main dish and it was very average. The service was average. The place is fairly small but they have a patio that is perfect for a nice day. Although my experience was average another friend of mine had been there and told us to try the dishes you wouldn't typically find on a fly by Chinese restaurant so I'll be back to try again. read more

This place is delicious and authentic. Their Mapo tofu is one of my favorite dishes and it includes the hot and numbing peppercorn which is a must try if you like tofu. The soup dumplings that they serve is a must try as well and don't worry it won't be those mini sorry looking soup dumplings you get from Uber eats or whatever. They have a great selection of dim sum small plates. I ordered a few and everything I had was delicious. I had an outstanding dinner at Hai. The food here is head and shoulders above other any other Sichuan restaurant I've tried in Decatur-- above most Sichuan restaurants in Atlanta as a whole, for that matter. Even competing Chinese restaurants like Yummy Spicy or Gu's Kitchen on Buford Highway, a reliable locale for quality "authentic" food, struggle to reach the heights of the meal I had at Hai. I went with a group of four other people, and between us we split three appetizers: - Xiao Long Bao (pork soup dumplings) - Dan Dan Noodles - Wuhan Sesame Noodles Two entrees: - Kung Pao Chicken - Szechuan Basil Chicken And two "Chef Specials" listed on a specialty menu: - Beijing duck buns - Crispy fried milk Everything ranged from very good to excellent. The soup dumplings were great-- the dumpling itself had a satisfying chewiness, and the warm and flavorful soup inside was very comforting. They were not served with soup spoons, which made it a bit challenging to eat without spilling any soup, but some careful chopstick work got the job done. Both noodle dishes were superb, each extremely flavorful and distinct, so we were glad we ordered both. The Dan Dan noodles were well dressed with the iconic spicy numbing sauce, and the sesame noodles had a decadent creaminess and nutty flavor that complemented the intensity of the Dan Dan noodles nicely. I will happily order both dishes again. Both entrees were fantastic, and again had a nice variety of flavor to make both dishes worth ordering together. The Szechuan Basil Chicken was stir fried with a good variety of vegetables that provided some freshness, and the greens provided a nice visual contrast to the usual dark reddish color palette of many Sichuan dishes. Although the basil flavor wasn't particularly noticeable, it was still present and quite enjoyable. The Kung Pao chicken was a personal favorite of mine. The heat, tanginess, and sweetness of the sauce was perfectly balanced, and the pieces of onion and bell pepper provided a perfect cooling element to the intensity of the dish. Nothing was overwhelmingly spicy, but I found the heat of everything on the table to be quite satisfying, though this is sure to vary according to your own spice tolerance. The specialty dishes were also quite good. I loved the duck buns, particularly the warm chewy bun itself, though the portion was fairly small for the price. The fried milk was something I had never tried before, and I was pleasantly surprised by the sweet, rich flavor and soft texture. It would be a great dessert, though it was served early on in our meal, even before some of the appetizers reached the table. Still quite enjoyable as a sort of palate cleanser. I'm not sure how frequently the chef specials are served, but I would definitely try more of them in the future. The service was friendly and pretty quick. I am also quite fond of the ambiance, which is somewhat casual with a clean modern aesthetic. The lighting was pleasantly dim. Prices were perfectly reasonable (and especially affordable when splitting everything between five people). I think Hai will find a solid spot in my restaurant rotation, and I will happily be returning very soon. read more

My daughter and I went to Hai again yesterday I can not Bragg enough on this restaurant food always great and hot and always the best customer service and I love the sweet tea, I always get the same thing but it's so good. read more

Enjoyed a yummy lunch at Hai. Hai is located in the North Decatur plaza anchored by Walmart and LA Fitness. Hai specializes in "real Chinese" food. There were a few American faves like Generals on there, but for the most part that holds true. Most importantly they had a good lunch special! Monday-Friday from 11am-3pm except holidays they have a myriad of lunch specials for $10! Rice and Soup come with an entree and egg rolls are $1 extra. I ordered the chicken with scallion and chili(extra hot). The presentation and service was lovely. I also ordered a green tea($2.50). The food wasn't as spicy as I'd like but it was flavorful and filling. Parking was tight so I ended up closer to Starbucks and walked around but not impossible. read more
