I've eaten at Hai several times, and I've always had good food there. My favorite dish is the bamboo fish, and I appreciate the consistency of the dish. It always tastes deliciously the same. I've had so many items on the menu here; I don't think any option would be disappointing. Also, I've only eaten at Hai during the day time, I have never experienced them at night. Service is always good and the team there works really well together. They always come right on time but never seem rushed. The shopping center is always full of traffic but the upside is that there's always parking. My only downside for Hai is pricing. FOOD: The xiao long bao is not Din Tai Fung, but much better than most places. The crispy pork belly was good but not the kind I'm used to from those Chinese bakeries in the Bay Area. This was literally deep fried pork belly pieces but without that super crispy layer on top. The pork bao (cha siu bao) was really good. I actually prefer the Americanized version of it, but this was authentic. The peking duck was not anywhere near the best I've had but still flavorful. Overall, really good food. SERVICE: Very good. While a bit on the pricey side, I did enjoy my lunch at Hai. The restaurant is located in the Suburban Plaza Shopping Center on North Decatur Road. It's a very busy area, so parking can be difficult. I called ahead of time and placed my order. When I arrived, I was greeted by a server and paid for my order at the kiosk. After a few minutes, my name was called and I picked up my order. I got the shrimp fried rice and added beans sprouts for an additional $2. The total was $17.28. Upon opening the container, I thought it looked bland. I don't know if this is a downward trend or we just had a bad experience. I have been to Hai several times for lunch as well as dinner. We went for lunch today and nothing seemed right, the food or the service We ordered the lunch special (the number of items seemed cut in half ) which was bland. The hot and sour soup was almost all broth, the Mongolian beef had stringy beef and my eggplant dish lacked the basil that was supposedly in it. My friend received the wrong special. There was a conversation with the waiter who indicated that he would bring what she had ordered. I got my food and started to eat so it would be hot. She got nothing and after 10 minutes asked and was told that he misunderstood and had not put the order in. I had virtually finished by the time, her order came. There were at least two other similar mistakes where I had to wonder if the waiter was listening at all. I was recommended to this place by a few friends so I finally made it here on a Saturday night to find plenty of parking spots and it to be about half-way full. They have indoor and outdoor seats available that is fully enclosed and what I believed to be space heaters too. My friends and I shared their steamed pork buns, grandma's noodles, and soup dumplings for starters. My favorite had to be the noodles because of the simplicity and texture of the noodles. I also enjoyed the fluffiness of the bun but found the pork flavor to be underwhelming, and this is coming from someone who loves pork. Soup dumplings were juicy but also lacked stronger aromatics. For entrees, we shared their sesame chicken plus their chicken with lettuce wraps. Both chicken dishes were well prepared and served with individual bowls of rice so you don't have to order and pay for it. Overall, I had a good experience. The staff were friendly and had a lot of additional personality I was not expecting. Parking was easy, spots in front of the restaurant filled up fast, but there was plenty of parking in the shopping center. When I walked in to pick up my order, the hostess was friendly and handed me my food right away. The ambiance was intimate with dim lighting. My entrée was the Kung Pao Shrimp and Scallops. It came with plenty of large shrimp and scallops that were cooked to perfection. It was spicy and very flavorful. The meal was pricey, but you get what you pay for, and I feel it was worth the price. I visited the Decatur location this evening to grab a meal to go. After placing my order, I finally discovered the post Health Inspection score. The inspection was hidden behind other documents on the board. To my disappointment, the score was a "70/C". The date was the most recent.and was from May 2023. I quietly asked the gentleman who'd taken my order if that was the most recent inspection score. He boisterous responded, "It's 100!" Got to try a few dishes off the menu. I had the grandma noodles, spicy calamari, garlic cucumber salad, and the hot and numbing flounder stone pot. I enjoyed the grandma noodles, thick long pieces of noodles drenched in hot chili oil. It was too spicy but I did added the sauce from the flounder spice we had. The flounder hotpot had a nice kick in the spice. Great with rice and the seasoning was amazing. The garlic cucumber salad was refreshing. The calamari was okay, I would pass up on that dish. The people who run this place do not care one bit about health codes or standards. Eat here at your own risk because you're probably going to get food poisoning.
