Place was kinda empty so it was actually a bit cold given I was wearing just shirt and shorts. We got calamari, fried chicken wings, eggplant, and the meat platter. Meat platter was the best, but wish they gave more lettuce or even rice paper to wrap stuff. Otherwise everything was prepared really well but for $62, I probably could have just got double or triple the stuff at a Vietnamese mom and pop shop in Seattle and even more in Houston Calamari was second favorite and probably could have mixed the sauce in some rice and vegetables and you'd been happy as a camper Fried Chicken wings were pretty decent. It's not the best fish sauce wings I've had but texture is crunchy enough and flavor is there. Eggplant I felt like was kind of disappointing because the softness of the eggplant wasn't there and it was almost not cooked enough and just looked like weird tentacles in sauce. We dined at Hai Sous and while the food itself was good, our experience was impacted by a concerning issue with how a gluten restriction was handled. We sat at the bar and informed the bartender at the beginning of the meal that one of us has a gluten intolerance. We ordered the chef's tasting menu, and a manager later explained that the menu had just changed to a seafood-based version. Since neither my husband nor I are big seafood eaters, we were offered an accommodated tasting menu that included the meat platter. Unfortunately, it was never communicated that the meat platter was not entirely gluten-free. After eating several pieces, I began feeling bloated and uncomfortable. When I checked the menu and asked another bartender, I was told the shrimp roll contained gluten after I had already eaten three. Our check was also marked with a gluten allergy, which made the oversight more concerning. While I'm not allergic, I do have an intolerance that causes significant stomach issues, and this was clearly communicated before ordering. This could have been much more serious for someone with a true allergy. The bartender apologized and offered a drink on the house, which was appreciated, though at that point my main concern was the physical impact I'd be dealing with for the next few days, including over the holiday weekend. There was also no follow-up from the manager who originally discussed the accommodation. The food and atmosphere were enjoyable, but clearer communication and more careful handling of dietary restrictions are needed. Not sure if the happy hour service/food is different than their regular dining/tasting menu experience but the consensus of our table was there was nothing we'd go back for. Came here for my boyfriend's birthday. We ordered the chicken wings and grilled oysters to start off. They were decently sized, crispy, and perfectly balanced between salty and sweet. However, I would pass on the grilled oysters-- saw someone here described them as raw oysters slightly warmed... and it was exactly that. Moving onto the main course, I was pretty disappointed in the portion size of the prawns and snow crab claws. The garlic butter sauce made up for this. My mom and I had dinner here last night. I wanted to take her out to a special dinner and was nervous to take her to HaiSous, since we're Vietnamese and she had just come back from a trip to Vietnam. I think I set her expectations appropriately though - telling her it's a very fancy Vietnamese restaurant for Americans. She loves to cook and appreciates unique and nicely presented dishes and thought HaiSous would be a perfect place to take her since she could relate to the food. We reserved seats at the Chef's Counter, which is essentially a bar/counter seat. My mom loved it, but I can see how other diners would not like sitting here. You don't get the ambiance of the upscale restaurant when you're sitting at the counter and it's a little cramped. We also didn't get the *full experience* since they weren't using the entire kitchen. Most of the action was happening further in the back and it was hard for us to see. Still, we spent most of the dinner watching the chefs and pointing out little details about the dishes they were making. My mom got a kick out of it. We had the chicken wings, crab fried rice, and bun cha Hanoi. The chicken wings were great, heavily seasoned - maybe a little to much, but it was tolerable. The crispy outside texture was wonderful and there was a lot of moist meat that helped balance out the sauce. Very traditional strong Vietnamese fish sauce flavors - not "Americanized." The crab fried rice was wonderful, not too salty, great flavor. I could eat this whole dish by myself. Finally, the bun cha... fell short for us. The broth had a confusing flavor profile - it seemed like half pho broth and half fish sauce - not very nice. We weren't sure whether it was meant to be a soup that we drank or something we just dipped the noodles and lettuce in. I wouldn't recommend it. So excited to have found a upper scale Vietnamese restaurant! We dropped in from happy hour (4-5:30pm) be aware as the website still says 6pm! We got the chicken wings, bun cha, and octopus with eggplant. All the dishes were packed with flavor and delicious. The one thing that I will opt for next time is the lettuce on the side of the soup, it just didn't sit right with me. I sat at the bar and was so happy I was finally able to check this place out. The ambience is nice and intimate. Plenty of seating at the bar and in the front of the restaurant. There is another section with seating in the back of the and it's a bit more lighting. Big ups to my servers and bartenders. Jose, Ranado, and Marty took great care of me and my friend that night! Service was top tier! They were so helpful and so nice. Thru will definitely take care of you. The grilled prawns were great size and cooked perfectly as well as the octopus. My primary meal was the rice noodle dish which had a great taste in general but as I continued to eat it the sweetness of the tamarind sauce became too much for me. However I would oreder again with the sauce on the side or easy topping of it. I got the whipped banana dessert for my birthday treat..it wasn't complimentary..I ordered it and it was delicious in my opinion.. airy with pieces of banana, roasted peanuts and the banana crackers to support it. Overall, the food was great and outstanding. Not a typical Vietnamese restaurant, the dishes are all innovative and creative. Papaya Salad: very different than the Thai style papaya salad. I generally prefer the Thai version because I love sour taste, this is based on personal preference. Curry: A sweet curry, probably due to the coconut milk and sweet potatoes. Chicken Wings: one of the most popular dishes, the sauce is sweet and sour. Definitely a great choice to start the meal. Crab fried rice: the rice is on the soft side. It has a little bit of spiciness to it (not a lot). It was a great combination with the curry. This dish is not made of imitation crab, so this is a huge plus for me. Seafood Platter: this was definitely my favorite dish we ordered. The seafood was fresh and juicy. The seasoning for the oysters was definitely unique. The dipping sauce and powder matched well with the seafood. Definitely a must try dish in the restaurant. Eggplant: another of my favorite dish! The eggplant was well flavored and everyone loved this dish. I think this is definitely a must order vegetable dish! Grilled pork: a unique way of eating "pho," by dipping everything on the platter into the pork soup. If you love pho then this is must try for you. Great trendy spot with tastefully designed Asian menu and interior decor. Check out their happy hour from 4-6pm at the bar for affordable versions of their food and drinks. I ordered the Chili Claims with Rice Crackers - very tasty, served cold with 3 large rice crackers. I think the ratio could've been improved with more rice crackers and a spicier flavoring, as there wasn't much chili flavor to the crabs. It was still pretty delectable and moist. Their happy hour is Wed-Sun from 4pm-6pm (bar seating only). They have some of the best cocktails I've ever had and the bartenders, Jose and Renato are the best! I've been here twice and sent folks here many times. I'm a fan and have yet to be disappointed! Every time, every dish has been so full of flavor and cooked to perfection. The whole fish is always a wonderful surprise. I'm not a big fish fan normally, I'd generally prefer shellfish, but the fluke is fantastic and I love the way it's served. The wings are so good. I could have eaten a whole order of these myself. The crab fried rice was loved by all. The papaya salad was flavorful and nuanced and lots of fun textures. Chinese broccoli was only ok, this is the one thing I kinda regret ordering. Service is really solid here. The one thing that was odd to me was that we asked for one of several open perimeter tables rather than the table in the middle of the room and were told no, even though they were empty and didn't have any other seatings at those tables the rest of the night. Very weird to not honor a simple request like that unless there's an outstanding issue like, these tables are all broken or under a leak. Overall though, once seated, service was great and our server was attentive and helpful. The cocktails are lovely as well. Everyone at our table enjoyed theirs. HaiSous has one of the more affordable prix-fixe tasting menus in Chicago at $68/pp for 3 courses (8 dishes) without any beverage pairing (though I think it's $70 now). The menu rotates seasonally. My partner and I went on a Sunday night with a reservation and it wasn't very crowded. The ambience was elegant, but not overly fancy. The service was quick and friendly, and each of the dishes came very quickly. Overall, the sauces in each of the dishes really stood out to me-- they were simultaneously strong and delicate in flavor and made the dishes pop out. The first "for fun" course came with banana blossom salad, pork sausage summer rolls, and Arctic Char crudo. The summer rolls weren't too impressive and I've definitely had better ones at restaurants in Argyle, but the other 2 dishes were fantastic. The crudo tasted light and fresh, and paired well with the fish sauce flavor and garnishes. The banana blossom salad was my favorite, with tons of unique flavors and textures, both crunchy and chewy. The main course came with a braised beef dish, roasted sea bass, Chinese broccoli, and rice. The braised beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, especially when marinated in the savory broth. The Chinese broccoli was cooked to a perfect softness and topped with fried garlic pieces that added a nice crunch and flavor. The sea bass was also good-- it could have been more tender, but the tomato sauce it came in was delicious. The dessert was a Banana Cookie Crust Cream Puff, which was pretty good and not too sweet. I've been wanting to come here for a very long time now. We were in the area and saw that they still had same day reservation slots, so we decided to come here last minute. The service here was great. Very attentive, got sat down right away and we received our food very quickly. We weren't that hungry and decided to order their House Fried Rice and their Bun Cha Hanoi. I love rice. So I try to order a rice dish whenever I can, but the fried rice here was way too salty. This is the first time I've ever had to send back a dish. The Bun Cha Hanoi on the other hand was very flavorful and filling. This was a perfect amount for two people. It came with a crispy spring roll, rice noodles, bib lettuce, clay pot pork patty, charred pork broth, and Vietnamese herbs. The broth alone was delicious. The server did explain how to eat this; but he wasn't loud enough and spoke too quick, so I just winged it and ate it my own way. I tried the broth on its own first and then finished it off by putting all the rice noodles in and added the lettuce. I ate the spring rolls by themselves and they were delicious as well. Quite possibly my favorite happy hour in town. Excellent drinks and food. We tried new things off the happy hour menu and absolutely loved the bun cha and fried calamari. The grilled pork in the bun cha was flavorful and tender and the broth in the dish was perfect for a rainy day like today. I've dined at Haisous two times now, and have gotten the opportunity to try several dishes, and happy to say that I am an ongoing fan! Every dish seems to be thoughtfully curated, from the flavors to the presentation. I highly recommend going with a group and ordering a little bit of everything on their menu, so you can get a feel of the wide range of palates the head chef is capable of (sweet, savory, tangy, sour, acidic, umami, etc). I also love the open kitchen concept, and seeing the chefs do their thing. It makes you feel closer to the food you're eating, which I always appreciate. The interior modern feels approachable, while making notes to Vietnamese culture. Honestly very disappointing experience, the restaurant had a nice vibe, and I went with my partner for our anniversary dinner. I made an early reservation for happy hour, however we were told only upon arrival that it was only at the bar. We didn't mind and moved to sit at the bar, however we were forced by the host to move to a different area of the bar even though the restaurant was empty and it was 5pm, if someone had wanted to sit in the same space, we would've moved, but since it was empty it just felt a bit much. The younger hostess was constantly giving us attitude and it was starting to bother me, like she didn't want us to have a good experience. In addition, no one ever wished us a happy anniversary, which I noted on the reservation and thought it was something that at least would be brought up on arrival. The bartender was kind but obviously wasn't as trained on service as the main staff may be and didn't ask us for dietary preferences, so we ended up with a dish with meat that was meant to be vegetarian. The papaya salad was ok, it needed more seasoning and didn't have any spice at all. The crab fried rice was pretty good, but was missing some depth of flavor or richness that could've been better with a fried egg on top or something of the sort. The highlight was the emperor noodles with crab, which was my favorite dish and was rich, garlicky, and buttery with a strong crab flavor. Finally, as we left the host didn't even acknowledge us as I said thank you, while we left which honestly left a bad taste in my mouth. Front of house service was especially disappointing and as much as I wanted to enjoy this experience, I found myself let down on so many fronts. A beautiful restaurant and a delicious menu. This review is super long overdue because my husband and I celebrated Thanksgiving dinner here! Since we are from out of town, we took a rideshare so we wouldn't be late. I must say that at night walking around (because we decided to take the bus back to our hotel) didn't seem like the best idea but maybe since it was the holidays the streets were more empty and dark. He made reservation well in advance for the tasting menu and we were supposed to be seated in the counter area where you could watch the chefs work and assemble their meals. Unfortunately, we got booted to just a regular table because some of their other customers were taking longer than expected, which in the end was fine and we didn't mind. They gave us a nice welcome glass of champagne to make up for it which was super sweet. Our host and waitress were both very friendly throughout our experience. We ordered the holiday tasting tour menu which was $65 per person - note that the menu changes. Optional beverage pairing was available but we opted to not get that because we aren't really alcohol people. Everything is plated to share - so this review is based on the food we had back in November. Our Tasting menu included - steamed clams (very tasty) - saigonese rice paper salad - this was good -Grilled quail - my husband enjoyed but I wasn't really a huge fan -Prawns with coconut milk - really tasty -Roasted Duck - a little too fatty and I really didn't eat much of that one -Grilled Local mushrooms - very yummy -Baked Jasmine rice - an essential for us -Lychee rice pudding - tasty but after eating rice also felt like a lot of rice I think I might have preferred to order a la carte. We came to HaiSous for their summer tasting menu inspired by Vietnamese Street food. Two things we love colliding --- Street Food + Tasting Menu! I'd recommend trying this tasting menu if you're in need of a mini getaway. Take your taste buds to Southeast Asia. Passport optional. The Tasting Menu featured 7 dishes: Dau Phung Rang Toi - Spicy Garlic Roasted Peanuts Goi Com Chay - Crispy Rice Salad Banh Xeo Tron - Crispy Crepes with Shrimp Bo La Lot - Grilled Beef Wrapped in Betel Leaves Chao Tom - Grilled Sugarcane Shrimp Paste Ca Chien - Fried Trout with Lettuce Wraps Banh Mit Chien - Jackfruit Fritters We added an order of chopped clams to our meal, and it was probably our favorite dish of the night. It was full of garlic and ginger flavors served with crispy grilled rice crackers. I found myself touring the appetizers (aka for fun dishes) but always coming back to the chopped clams because of the aromatic clams and the crispy crackers. The main entrees were also spot on for seafood lovers. The chao tom (grilled sugarcane shrimp paste) and ca chien (fried trout) were beautifully executed. The shrimp paste was a balance of sweet and savory and had lobster notes to it. The fried fish was so crispy while maintaining the juicy and delicate flesh. It had a nice taste of ocean sweetness you can only get with fresh fish. It was served with a pile or fried garlic and onion on top and a generous drizzle of sweet and sour fish sauce. Both were served with lettuce, herbs, and vermicelli on the side to make your own lettuce wraps. If you like fish, don't pass this one up! They also have fried fluke on the menu that looks equally pleasing, so if you missed the summer tasting menu, you got a fish fallback! Dessert was jackfruit fritters over a coconut cream and salted caramel. I could eat that coconut cream all night long. Light coconut flavor and barely sweetened. The salted caramel added another level of complexity to the flavor that makes you begging for more cream and then more caramel. Overall, it was a fun and delectable trip to Vietnam without the hassle of TSA. I'm looking forward to their next tasting menu for a different tour of Vietnam. read more
