This was the worst dining experience I have ever encountered. My husband and I went for a date night we made a 7pm reservation. We arrived a little early but they sat us in the back of the restaurant. We ordered over 100 dollars in food and drinks and were having a nice time. After dinner the waiter asked if we'd like tea which we decided to have (again increasing our bill) - it was so scorching hot you couldn't touch the cups so we waited to drink. Then a guy who worked there (perhaps the owner he didn't introduce himself)! Came over and told us we had to leave (I kid you not). There had been no issues, we'd barely interacted with the staff besides putting orders in. We were still enjoying the scorching hot tea that was finally able to be drunk and it was all of 745pm so we'd been there maybe right at an hour. There was no apology given, my husband tipped well (too well). I've never had this type of thing happen - I keep asking myself did that just happen? I don't make a habit of writing reviews but when something like this happens they deserve it! We were paying customers who made a reservation. There was no time limit given to us upon making the reservation or when we walked in. If they wanted to refuse us service then it should have been upon arrival not after they collected our money. Read lots of good reviews about Hajime. So last night, me and my fiancé decided to try the place. We ordered their regular sushi and sashimi, tempura (as our starter), seaweed salad and 2 miso soup. We were both satisfied how fresh the food and how well it was prepared. And to end up the night, we tried the hot sake. The price was worth it. Fresh sushi, yummy teriyaki! The chefs welcome you as you enter the restaurant which was cute. The server was great at explaining the menu and ingredients of certain dishes as it was our first time there. The place is small and quaint. No frills. On the advice of my friends from Japan, we went to this restaurant. Very nice atmosphere inside and the restaurant looks very authentic, good service and of course the freshest sushi. I can't recommend anything specific as I think sushi is a very personal choice. It all depends on your fish preferences, but as we are omnivores we took a set from the main menu and were happy with it. We also had the teriyaki salmon and it was also very tasty. But my favorite of the evening was the yuzu sorbet, I liked it so much that we came back for it a few days later for takeaway. I definitely recommend this place. Recommend ordering a la carte- this time I got the sushi special plus uni and it was fine but not as impressive as my last visit. Also chef was a little heavy handed with wasabi despite two requests for less. What happened? Awkward seeing a great place turn so-so. Mainly the pricing and sizing is super off. Two people no drinks $100 bucks and the sashimi "deluxe" is 12 pieces of sashimi with rice that is dried out (mediocre rice at a sushi restaurant is a big no-no for me). Waiter was grumpy and pointed at my food with his fingers to count the number of pieces. Gross. Dishwasher lady with dirty apron coming in and out of small dining area with dirty dishes. I had a wonderful lunch there unexpectedly. I have never been there before, and walked past it and decided to try it. We started out with salads that were cold and crispy with a wonderful vinaigrette. For entrées, I ordered the yakiudon and tempura shrimp and vegetables. The tempura shrimp, OMG! I've been coming here with my family for years, and it never disappoints! With my family being Japanese, it's nice at restaurants when my family is able to speak Japanese with them, really feels like home. The sushi is always top notch, you can order anything and will be impressed. Also I'd recommend appetizers too - don't sleep on them! Since moving to the area, this had become my new go-to sushi spot...until tonight. There has been a notable spike in prices since my previous visit in the early fall, individual pieces of sushi in particular. For example, when I asked the current "market price" for ONE piece of uni, the waiter told me, straight-faced, "$17". I laughed in response, but due to pure shock. With its new hefty prices, and the fact that they skimped with the amount of the fish on their rolls, as mentioned in some others' reviews, I unfortunately will probably not come here again. My neighbor recommended this place and I had seen several reviews saying it the best sushi in Westchester, so I had to try it. I hadn't had sushi in the 20 months we've moved back from Asia as it's always a bit of a disappointment comparing Asian food one has had in Asia with what one can get in the U.S. We ordered their tempura udon with rolled sushi, katsudon, rolled sushi combination and chirashi sushi from their lunch menu for takeaway. When I arrived, the tables and chairs were all stacked away as there has not been indoor dining since last year in March due to the pandemic. Three men were bustling about: one at the sushi bar, another on the kitchen and the third running between them to fulfill a line of takeaway orders at the counter. While I was waiting, more people came in to placed their order or wait for their takeaway orders. Now for the food. The chirashi and sushi were excellent - the fish was very fresh and the pickled ginger rolled beautiful on the side instead of dumped in a lump as I was afraid. The katsu was also tasty. The tempura was not as light as I had hoped, but I also wondered if it was because it was takeaway. Maybe it would be better if it could have been eaten there. Overall, we were pleased and would be happy to order again. In particular, we would like to be able to come again to try the tempura once indoor dining is available. [We added some sliced avocado in the photo.] P.S. I noticed some reviews referred to shouting among staff and I did not witness that during my visit today. Went here for the first time time tonight. We started with the chicken katsu appetizer, which was hot and crispy, and the katsu sauce was great. This was followed by the chirashi bowl of mixed sashimi and salmon roe over rice. We also had some yellowtail and fresh salmon sushi, and spicy tuna rolls. Everything was incredibly fresh and tasty, with no hint of "fishiness". We finished with the broiled eel, which was a first, and it was fantastic. His place is authentic, high-quality and pricey like any Japanese fare but without the higher tag price of the city restaurants. There's just four of them who is Japanese in Westchester so when they are gone or decide to close shop, all that will be left are the Chinese restaurateurs serving Japanese fare without the heart and traditions of Japan . Whenever Mr. Takahashi serves, he tells us stories, both from his stash of current news and his personal history. Really don't understand any of these high star reviews. What was presented to me for $24 is... laughable. Not to mention I couldn't just order normal roll like I do at other places- I had to do either their fish (they choose) or their vegetarian... Also, what's up with bathroom situation? I have to take a key attached to a weird stick (like we are in grade school), walk through some doors outside the restaurant, through a weird passageway to unlock a door to a small bathroom? And it wasn't even clean. I've been coming here since I was in elementary school, and it seems like they're getting busier every year. Hands down, this is the best Japanese restaurant in lower Westchester. You simply won't find fresher ingredients for a killer price. I always get the shrimp tempura appetizer and then the chirashi. The appetizer has shrimp, green beans, sweet potatoes and broccoli. The breading is very crisp, and the dipping sauce is just sweet enough to offer a nice balance in the flavor. The vegetables are very soft and moist. I love this dish because it's the perfect equilibrium of salty and sweet, crunchy and soft. On to the main dish, the chirashi sushi. I freaking LOVE their chirashi. The assorted sashimi slices are all super fresh and delicious. The rice is seasoned so that I could just eat it by itself and it would still be delicious. But their secret ingredient in the bowl that really makes this chirashi unique is the egg. They have small strips of baked egg, almost like strips of omelette that is mixed in with the rice. It adds such a sweet flavor and creamy texture that perfectly compliments the every bite. read more

At one point, I refused to eat Chirashi anywhere else because I was always left dissatisfied, knowing how authentic, fresh, variety in kind, and beautiful it can be at Hajime. Highly recommend it for all sashimi lovers!!! Not only the sashimi at the top, but the rice bedding is beautifully well done too - being mixed with baked eggs and greens. Walked in & ordered three rolls and three sushi pieces to go. After waiting longer than quoted and driving home, I opened the bag only to see that the order was wrong. The salmon roll was way over cooked, to the point that we can't eat it. The eel avocado roll is probably the worst roll I've had of this type and the tuna in the tuna avocado roll looks mangled, very different from how it normally looks. After spending $40 and 20 minutes waiting, I'm extremely disappointed and will not be going back. read more

Hajime has been my family's go-to sushi spot for years; the quality of the food is still excellent, but during the summer they raised prices considerably, doubling or even tripling them (sushi rolls that were once $6 or $7 are now $14 each, a cup of miso soup that was $3 and is now $8!). Hajime is one of a few authentic Japanese restaurants in Westchester ( unlike the many "Fusion" restaurants that serve sushi, usually made by non Japanese trained chefs). At Hajime, we always have Omakase (chef's choice) and we are never disappointed by Sam's choices. If sushi rolls are what you're into, Jin will fulfill your need, but I think that Sam's sushi and sashimi is the best in Westchester. read more

Well my 1 star is based on the service and ended up have to walk out after we waited for 25 mins. We decided to try this out since it has high reviews... First, we waited 15 mins inline with no one else before us, just waiting to be seated. And when we finally got seated,, we were told the table is ready but no one show us where to sit. Then, when we asked we were pointed to our seats. We then waited for another 10 mins or so til we walked out and not getting our orders. The young lady who cleans the table couldn't get our order since the older lady is the one getting the orders. The older lady is all over the place, secondly she's raising her voice to the younger lady when a customer follow up on their order.
