[[HIGHLIGHT]]Haven't been back in yearssss so felt like I was coming for the first time. I remember it being smaller and more intimate for some reason.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]In any case, we got a window seat which I appreciated.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Enjoyed the chirashi don and nigiri particularly. I don't think it's a value spot nor "night out" vibes, maybe something in between But lengthy menu has something for everyone. Service is friendly but they are busy so you may need to flag them down and also wait a bit for orders.
We tried to go to another sushi restaurant but it was fully booked, so we came here instead. We came at a good time since we didn't have to wait. The menu is quite extensive and I was a bit overwhelmed. We started off with the nankotsu karaage (deep fried chicken cartilage), which were crispy and some pieces had some meat to them. Then I went with the basic chirashi don while my bf got the chanko nabe (sumo stew). The rice was nicely seasoned, but I felt as if the fish lacked flavor. The nabe was comforting, but the wagyu beef slices were chewy.
As a sushi lover, I came here with high hopes--especially since it came recommended by a coworker. Food 3/5: I went for the omakase set, which was decent but felt like it was missing some of the stars (no sweet shrimp, no uni). I ended up ordering scallop and uni à la carte, which were fine but not particularly memorable. The green tea ochazuke honestly tasted like something straight out of a supermarket packet--not bad, but not impressive either. On the plus side, my coworkers raved about the eel fried rice and some of the specialty rolls. Definitely more of a "fun group sushi night" than a pure sushi connoisseur spot. Surprisingly reasonable for the Bay Area. With a group of 10, we expected the bill to hit ~$100 per person, but it came out below that, which was a nice surprise. Definitely helps make this more of a "good value group dinner" spot rather than a high-end sushi destination. For me personally, the sushi was just okay, but I'd come back for the group vibe.

This was the standout -- the tuna on top was incredibly buttery and clean, easily the highest quality I've had in a while. Service & Ambiance The service was straightforward and efficient -- nothing over the top, but everything arrived on time and as expected. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was definitely a highlight: cute, clean, and modern with a cozy Japanese vibe that made the whole experience feel a little extra special.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Final Thoughts Dash delivers on quality, especially when it comes to their fish -- the tuna, in particular, was on another level. We ordered: Miso soup Wagyu cabraccio Hamachi poke roll Dash special roll Dragon roll Chawanmushi Oyster shooters Everything came out delicious. Toke a bit time for the food to come out. But they were busy so understandable. We definitely recommend this place to people.
The standout dish, hands down, was the Ika-Uni. So good we had to order it twice. The rich, savory sauce paired perfectly with the tender texture of the squid, and the uni was just the cherry on top. I could honestly eat a whole platter of that alone. The rest of the meal was decent, though nothing came close to the Ika-Uni in terms of flavor or impact. The fried rice was hearty and filling, but fairly standard. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space itself had a nice vibe. A balance between casual and formal, making it great for both a relaxed dinner or a dressier night out.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Friendly service!

All of them are super good! I love them. * Mixed tempura- 4/5 very yummy when it is still hot * Unagi Fried Rice - 4/5 there are salmon, salmon skin, unagi, and tobiko inside. Very flavorful. I enjoyed the dinner pretty much. I think I'll come back again and will def focus on nigiri & sashimi next time!
We came in on a Sunday evening right after they opened and were seated immediately. [[HIGHLIGHT]]For the first hour it was pretty calm, then by around 6:30/7pm the room filled out and had a comfortable energy without feeling crowded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was warm from the start: very attentive while it was slow, and still steady once things got busy. We ordered in several waves, mixing sushi with kitchen items, and they were completely unfazed by the pacing. Everything just came out as it was ready, which worked well for how we like to eat. I was happy to see they run a daily Toyosu board, and the selections that night included a few favorites I almost always order when I see them. The kinmedai and kurodai were cleanly cut and handled with care, and the itoyori was a pleasant surprise--hard to find, and the last time I had it was at a high-end omakase. The quality held up nicely for a Sunday. Beyond the Toyosu fish, the regular menu had plenty to enjoy. The salmon sushi was generously sized, the hand rolls were packed well, and the kitchen plates landed exactly as expected. The miso salmon and lamb chops were straightforward but comforting, and the wagyu carpaccio was a great value for the price. Portion sizes overall were better than expected for this category. I also appreciated their sake list: good range from house options to bottles at the daiginjo and junmai daiginjo level. A few things caught my eye, but I was with my kids this time, so I'll save that exploration for the next visit. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Speaking of which, this is a very kid-friendly spot. I can't believe I have never written DASH a review! I don't come here nearly as much as I would like. The menu is huge and has so many options for everyone. Their sushi rolls, nigiri and tapas are my favorite. The fish is super fresh. Everyone who works there is kind and attentive.
Dash is no joke! Each plate was out in under 5 minutes after ordering. And each dish was thoughtfully plated, fresh, high-quality, leaving us wanting more. Fish tasted fresh, and all the ones we tried had a different flavor profile. The peach shirome was interesting and refreshing, we were huge fans. We absolutely loved the oysters! To quote my boyfriend, "this might be one of the best oysters I've ever had." Great blend of flavors with the lemon and roe and sauce. Not pictured are the shishito peppers which were good, but actually pretty spicy which shocked us a bit. We sat at the bar and the sushi chef was very attentive to us. As we were ordering with the waitress, the chef would hear our order and get started immediately. Staff also came around to refill my hot tea at least three times. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space is quite deceiving since it looks small on the outside but there is an entire back area that might be better for larger groups.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
Omakase for $68 (10 pieces) and you can request small rice Agadashi tofu Garlic edamame Mushrooms Scallop and Uni Food was really good quality but the best thing about our experience was our server, Erica, who waa knowledgeable about the menu and provided recommendations based on our preferences. 10 out of 10 would come back because of her. We happened to stumble upon this place only because another establishment was fully booked. It was definitely a blessing in disguise.
I have eaten here twice now and gotten take out multiple times. The nigiri is great!! Loved the uni and anything that was torched. Everything was so fresh and if possible I suggest sitting at the bar. Prices are fair for downtown San Mateo, especially for fish if that quality. All the apps we got that included the oysters and tofu were amazing! We got the plum sake which was delicious, their yuzu one was also really refreshing. The place is pretty small in the front with some seating in the back. We didn't have to wait on a Friday night, but it did get busy. The staff were super nice and the food came out quick. Parking in downtown may be difficult but there are a bunch of garages near by.

The crispy fish skin combined with the aroma of eel creates a very delicious fried rice. I did not expect to find such a good Japanese restaurant in a location that is quite far from the center of the food district. Besides the fried rice, the tuna and salmon sashimi are large, fresh, and high quality. Many times when I eat sashimi that is not very clean, it upsets my stomach and makes me want to use the restroom. However, the food here is both clean and fresh, and I had absolutely no discomfort after the meal. I also ordered chawanmushi and stir fried udon, both of which were very well executed. I would give full marks to this restaurant for both its sashimi dishes and main courses. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The service is good, the environment is clean, and the dishes are priced normally, perhaps slightly on the higher side, but the value for money is reasonable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The only downside is that parking around this area is quite difficult. Overall: 3 stars Restaurant with a captivating menu full of inspirationally fusion tapas. I love the innovation and understand where some of the flavors are coming from, but I think a bit of finetuning would help the dish land better for me. Peach Shirome - The white cream adds a jarring saline forward combination to the sweetness of the peach and the leanness of the white fish. I think this dish could work if it focused on a more succinct concept. Chu Toro / Otoro - The fattinest of the bluefin really comes through in the cut, but it also tastes like the fish has been sitting there a while which starts to add a slightly unpleasant fishiness. Tuna Salmon Tower - Classic notion of Japanese style tartare tower that tastes very pleasant and smooth with richness coming from the fish and avocado. The fish needs to be diced significantly more so it can eat like a tartare though. Dash Taco - Intriguing bite that recreates the flavor of a taco instead with a more pleasant crispy seaweed shell thats more delicate all around from the tender salmon to avocado to the topped salsa. Went to Dash ( the format pasta shop) in Noe Valley. Great service. Lovely dishes. Especially nice was the hamachi carpaccio and stuffed mushrooms. We started/miso soup because it was a cold and foggy night. Parking was surprisingly easy for a Saturday night I will be back. read more

My friend chose this place for dinner as she dines here often. We had reservations for 5:30PM & it started getting more full by 6PM but this restaurant is quite large & can accommodate the demand. We started our meal with yuzu sake, agedashi tofu,Uni Nigiri, Hamachi Toro Nigiri, Sake Toro Nigiri, Chu Toro Nigiri, & OToro Nigiri. Everything was super fresh & the Otoro & Sake Toro were like butter. We added the 10 piece omakase, scallop nigiri & ikura nigiri & Anago (sea eel) tempura since we weren't totally full. Everything was delicious. We had green tea cheesecake for dessert which comes with 2 slices. Perfect way to end our meal. Service is warm & helpful. Some street parking is available (free after 6PM) & there are private lots too. I will definitely return if I'm in the area. read more

The Top Secret was probably our favorite, followed by the ikura ankimo though that's worth the price in my opinion. I liked the broth of the oden but the solid food it comes with is 90% fish cakes so it gets repetitive. The stuffed mushrooms were not my thing - the mushroom was too chewy to pair with the imitation crab. read more
made reservations and we got our table, I would recommend since they have limited seating (I believe like 4-5 tables that can accommodate 4 people then I saw a 1 table for 2, and some bar seating and larger tables in the back) Miso soup (3/5): tasted average, definitely needed more taste, it wasn't flavorful. Wagyu carpaccio (5/5): flavorful, soft and delicious! sake toro (5/5): so fatty loved it, super soft & a small portion. not sure if I'd justify for its price tho considering how small. salmon skin salad (3/5): not the best, wanted to try it since it sounded interesting. Far too crunch and thick (thought it would be like this salmon skin chips thin), sauce was too salty and the salmon skin would soak it up quick which made it awfully salty. creamy scallop (4/5): basic roll, seemed more complex from the description, the scallop was super soft though which was amazing. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal at dash! We tried hamachi toro, ocean trout nigiri, sake toro, dash taco, scallop batayaki, Eryngii Mushroom, top secret, yaki onigiri Benedict. All three nigiris we tried were great! Good quality fish, well cooked sushi rice, good ratio. The dash taco was okay. You lose the flavor or the salmon amongst all the other ingredients. Eryngii mushrooms was so scrumptious! That sauce is heavenly. The top secret is their version of crispy rice spicy tuna and it's well done! It taste different from other ones I've had and had almost like a smokiness to it. I'm a wimp and couldn't handle the jalapeno on top lol so I just took it off. Scallop batayaki was also good and garlicky! I can't comment on the Benedict because I was so full I didn't have room in my belly to try it but my husband devoured it and said it felt homey. Came by DASH while walking around downtown San Mateo, looking for dinner. We were seated promptly around 4:30pm. FOOD: We ordered some nigiri, Lion King roll, unagi fried rice and chicken karage. The fish tasted fresh and the roll was tasty. The chicken karage was juicy, not dry. The batter was thin, not super thick or cakey. The unagi fried rice came last, and by then, I was too full. Tasty, lots of flavor, and we had to take home the rest. SERVICE: Everyone was super friendly. Water and tea refilled when needed. Plates cleared when we needed space for more food. I've ordered takeout from here and recently just visited the restaurant. I went at 5pm on a Saturday and there was no wait. It's not as popular as other sushi restaurants on the main road, but the nigiri is just as good. Recommendations: (Takeout) - do not get the ahi tuna bruschetta togo, it will become soggy and disgusting. - fish is surprisingly great quality - mackerel is great - Uni baked baby scallops were great - presentation is also still on point (Dine in) - Uni-ikura- ankimo was quite heavy and very filling. I would suggest not ordering additional fatty dishes if you are getting this one. - hon maguro quadro (tuna flight)- it's great to try, personally, I would order the normal and the zuke individually next time. I've had too much toro in my life. - sagoshi- so good, so fresh. I'd love to try their other nigiri next time. Dash stands out for its commitment to using the fresh, quality fish. The freshness of the ingredients shone through in every dish, elevating the dining experience to new heights. The ambiance is dark and casual. My friends wanted to meet up over dinner and we made a reservation a few days before. I contemplated on writing a long review with all the details but I don't even want to relive that moment again. The food is delicious but due to poor service and a rude waitress, there's other places that will offer delicious food with a better service. I've never had a waitress straight up and said "I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR STORY" to me and my family when she wanted to group us all together so she can get gratuity for a party of six, when we had two separate bookings and we are not together. She proceeded to tell me her side of the story and I could have said "I don't care about your story either." In general I like to match energy but this waitress is definitely something else and I did not want to blow up at the restaurant. Dinner was awkward because she was rude to us. I noticed there's only two waitresses at this restaurant and they are very busy. We kept asking for more water and they kept forgetting. Despite the appalling encounter, both separate tables left them an 18% and 20% tip. Not sure what the fuss is about and the greed over money was apparent. I can't say I'll stop by again. read more
Went on a rainy night. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very quiet restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got excellent service. Came in for a small but if just oysters. Ordered their kaki fry, kaki uni, and fresh oysters. They also have oyster shooters but i want feeling alcohol so i skipped it. Every price was so delicious! I highly recommend all the oyster dishes. Fantastic! Dinner reservations for 6 for a birthday celebration. Parking in the downtown San Mateo can be hard. They don't give out a menu so you scan a tiny QR code on the table to see the menu. That's if you can even read the full menu on your phone! Asked for a physical menu and after a long wait for it, we received 1 menu for a table of 6 people to look at? Maybe because we couldn't read what to order from our phone we just let the birthday person order whatever he wanted. I took pictures of our dishes. Overall service was decent, food was decent but nothing stood out! Ambiance was good; we were in the back room where there were larger tables. I would say Dash is a bit pricier than even your usually pricey Japanese restaurants! 18% gratuity automatically added to your total but at least the waitress told us when she handed the bill to us. I think for the price you can find just as good Japanese food at other restaurants. read more
Sushi was good! Really pricey ($139 including tip) but it was a fun run for sure. We got the omakase-- which was okay! The pieces were in the smaller side and it was not filling at all but it was nice tasting the different fish. My favorite was the Hamachi Carpachio. It was really flavorful and dense with lots of elements to it. I liked the fatty tuna the least-- though it was delicious in itself! Service was a 5/5- out waitress kept refilling our teas and checking in on us so it was nice! read more

Service - 2 stars Food- 3 stars Ambiance-2 stars A bit disappointed, though it would be amazing experience but tuned out to be no as expected Food was ok there were few good dishes like the salmon miso was very seasoned well, the uni was fresh, and the tuna tartar was great The rest of the food was a miss. The rice in the rolls were too dense and the spicy scallops was nothing that tasted like the spicy scallops and the service is nonexistent where we constantly have to ask to refill tea and ask to be served. The noise level was very high, can't hear our conversations. So sad read more

A solid 4.5 but rounding up to 5 bc let's support small biz! A bit pricier than an average dinner but the food was tasty and unique. Service was good (not anything standout but good enough). I was visiting the area and saw the amazing reviews for this place. I thought, "it's only open one more hour but if it's as good as they say..." Readers, it was as good as they say. I have never had a more fresh crispy rice tuna in my life. The hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) was a HUGE portion that fed me for two days. Everything was spectacular and *notably very fresh* even at closing time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was very relaxed and warmly lit[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], the staff was TOO kind and helpful. Whoa, finally (walking distance of our house) scored a Japanese place worthy of a return visit. Sometimes we find a place where the sushi is pristine but the starters, soup, salad, etc. is not great--or vice-versa, which is the worst sin (the fish is meh). But this place hit it out of the park, dish after dish. We got several things, their nigiri absolute fire. The toro incredible fresh melt in your mouth with beautifully seasoned formed rice. Their specialty sushi roll with salmon and tuna, tobiko flakes ... their pork pot stickers, juicy and golden brown exterior, flavorful filling. Their tuna, salmon, avocado tower with chips was great though I'd rather get something else next time. What I didn't like was their garlic edamame, I would've been better off getting their regular version, which next time we'll do. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their customer service is exemplary, super welcoming, warm friendly and the ambience is cozy, hushed and civilized with polished wooden tables, one of which we snagged tucked away behind the front door.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their prices are fair, especially for the quality of seafood and execution of dishes. read more

Regarding the sushi I was expecting a little more quality-wise, but it was still good. Big drinks list, including some hard-to-find sakes. The server misunderstood two things I ordered and rushed off too hastily for me to correct it. The inside of the place is cute and cozy. Bathrooms were clean and well maintained. read more
A great place to try some unique Japanese tapas-style dishes! Parking can be difficult around the area, and it's recommended to make a reservation for weekends. Would personally recommend trying more of the tapas rather than the sushi, but all the ingredients are fresh. We got: Peach shirome - whitefish and peach slices with truffle oil, comes with three pieces, and interesting combo of sweet and savory (3.5/5) Hamachi carpaccio - a bit too much sauce which made the fish a bit too salty, but good flavor overall (3.5/5) Iku-uni-himo - definitely a more decadent dish, but worth trying (4.5/5) Hamachi poke roll - fresh and quite a large roll! (4.5/5) The portions aren't that big and the prices in comparison are slightly above other Japanese restaurants in the area, but has interesting unique dishes that are definitely worth trying! read more
My friends and I had a 7pm reservation on a Tuesday. Honestly, parking in the area sucks. I circled around for 15 minutes until I found a lot nearby. We walked in and waited around for a few mins to be acknowledged. There is a QR code to view the menu and a server comes around to take your order. We all ordered the 10 piece nigiri omakase set, at $68 each. It was good, but there was a few really fishy pieces that I did not enjoy in the slightest. For the fish coming from the Toyosu Fish market, I expected it to be better quality, as some items didn't have any flavor at all (the scallop sucked). The nigiri here is also really small, so 10 pieces is not enough food for an average person. Our ginger and wasabi was given to us on one platter, instead of on our omakase set for each of us. I think we should have been given individual gingers/wasabis. I had to ask for more ginger as well. I think they're really understaffed. I had to request for my tea to be refilled twice as there is no one checking. When we finished our meal and requested our check, the server asked us how many cards. We were going to just pay one bill together and Venmo/Zelle each other later, but since she asked.... 3! Then she came back with 3 checks and kinda made it a point to let her know in advance in the future..... We were perfectly fine with one bill, but she offered...so it seemed kinda silly and passive aggressive to me? I know it was pretty busy for a weekday, so I'll leave it as that. I don't really think the price point reflects the quality of the food or service. I know DASH has a lot of positive reviews, so maybe in the future I'd give it another try... But right now, it's just overpriced and mid level quality sushi to me. read more
O V E R A L L I've had so much good quality sashimi/nigiris in the past few years that it will take a lot to impress me. I think this place is decent for what it is. We came here for our 4 year anniversary dinner... and I kind of regret it. This is a good place for a casual evening dinner but probably not a special special event. O R D E R Dash Tacos 2pc ($8) -- 3.5/5 Not bad, we have had better at Rantei in Santa Clara. Wagyu Carpaccio ($14) -- Agedashi Tofu ($9) -- 4/5 I've had better but I do like the variety of toppings and sauces to choose from AO Ebi Blue Shrimp ($12) -- 5/5 This was probably our favorite! Ahi Tuna Bruschetta ($13) -- 4/5 These were bigger than we expected! Really good. Unagi Fried Rice ($16) -- 5/5 We really loved this as well. I think they also fried the skin and mixed it into the rice - adds a nice crispy texture to your bite. Hon Maguro Quadro ($28 x2) -- 3.5/5 These were decent, but I've had better. There wasn't that moment where you felt like your mouth is bursting with flavors S E R V I C E I believe there were only 2 other parties seated so the service was really quick. IKU UMI HIMO $24 - This is what's on the featured image. Really unique. It's rice, ikura, uni with truffle oil on top and the monkfish liver is all shredded. It's an experience. CHIRASHI $33 - Solid meal. Good amount of fish and selection. Not the best chirashi I had in town but pretty good. AO EBI Blue Shrimp $12 - YES!! This was the best thing I ordered. The pine nuts and the sauce made it worth. Raw but seared and warm. It's delicious. SALMON SAKE TORO $12 (Toyosu Fish Market Special) - So the blue shrimp was so good that hey maybe we should order more from the special. Salmon, can't go wrong with that right? NO. Look how itty bitty tiny it is. It's the smallest little sushi I had. It felt like a joke, we laughed so much. Baby sushi! Sorry, so honestly this would have been a 5 star review had I not ordered this. Skip this, just get another round of blue shrimp! read more
