I ordered a gyro and got nothing of the sort. It was a disgusting piece of bread with some packaged salad and terrible ranch dressing and some dried chicken bits. I've been following this food truck for years! The Gyros & Rice Plates are sooo delicious! Their homemade Tzatziki is amazing too. It's really flavorful, with a slight hint of zest and sweetness. I checked out Halal Bites at Off The Grid in Pleasant Hill. I ordered the Rice plate with chicken. The salad it came with was uninspired with a weird dressing, but edible. The rice and chicken were actually pretty good. Nice flavor and a decent portion. Based on that, I probably would have rated them a solid 3, maybe even 4 stars in a generous mood. Sadly, also ordered the dolmas, though. I love Mediterranean food and know what dolmas should taste like. These were oddly either drizzled with or tossed in an unidentifiable white sauce. Not sure what it was, but it tasted like rancid mayo. It was a warm day, so that might be exactly what it was. What it wasn't was in any way enjoyable. I actually felt a little queasy after eating it. I might have used a napkin and just wiped that off, but the dolma (I only ate one), itself was not actually worth the effort. The filling was both tasteless and dry to the point that it was difficult to even swallow. The overall effect was decidedly unappealing. I was not tempted to eat more of them, even after forking out $8 for it. Icing on the cake? I tried to return the inedible green lumps masquerading as lovely dolmas and the guy in charge just grinned at me and smugly said "no refunds." Not even willing to discuss it. Not even after I explained that it was just bad. I will never see my $8, again, but hopefully you, gentle reader, can save yourself (and your $8) from the same disappointing experience. Next time, I'll just get tacos or something! This truck, I will be avoiding like death, itself. read more

This food truck occasionally stops at my university. Is it an off day? Did I order the wrong thing? $12 lamb gyro was really gross. Pita was cold and hard to chew, lamb was like eating mushy strips of textured vegetable protein that had been defrosted but not cooked properly. Very salty and garlicky in a generic seasoning or bouillon sort of way. The only positive was that the veggies which dominated the gyro were fresh and crisp. Had the falafel rice platter, (requested spicy), at the foodiecrew food cart thing Wednesday evenings at veteran's park in Brentwood and it was outstanding! Y'all were delicious at Autumn Lights festival on Saturday, and I appreciated seeing the family all working together. I had "Mixed on Rice" and it hit the spot. The chicken and lamb were both moist, tender, and flavorful. The lamb was a little more stewed than I was expecting, but it tasted good. The iceberg salad was plain but refreshing. The rice was spiced strongly - it tasted good and went great with the food, but once I'd finished the protein and lettuce I couldn't eat the rice by itself - it needed something blander to balance it out. Everything was generous portions -- My main regret was that I didn't get to try your falafel. But that's a good reason to come back, and I look forward to seeing you again. I was excited to try this place and have something different for lunch. Halal Bites of Chicago's food truck was just starting to open so I was first in line for the day. The person in the food truck was extremely friendly. I quickly looked at their menu and I knew what I wanted to order right away. I decided to order the falafel gyro. I am a big fan of falafels so I was excited to try theirs. The price of the falafel gyro was expensive. I was shocked at the price because typically falafel gyros are not that expensive and for that reason I am deducting one star. The food was quickly cooked up. After I received my food, I went to a table to eat it. The falafel gyro was decent but not the best I've ever had. The portion of the falafel gyro was a good size. Overall, my experience at Halal Bites of Chicago was pleasant. I am not sure if I will be back often because of the price. My job is great enough to alternate food trucks every few weeks or so and glad we get to have Halal Bites of Chicago in the rotation. Abdul, his wife and daughter are wholesome people making great food. You don't get into the food truck business (food business in general) if you don't love food, love what you do and love sharing it with others. I missed ordering the first week he came, and the second week I was lucky enough to try the Lamb & Chicken halal + salad + naan on the house, courtesy of Abdul himself! Talk about generosity. I love Mediterranean food. But let me tell you.. I devoured this!! I didn't even eat it until 15 mins after I received it and yes it was still warm but it was also DELICIOUS! I'm a bigger fan of the chicken than the lamb (it had a good spice) but the dressing was the perfect amount to coat the meat and some rice. The flavor was THERE. The meat wasn't dry at all. The portion is a good size, decent to share between 2 but if you're hungry I suggest getting your own. I'm drooling just thinking about this meal again... Always down to support a family business. Really bad food. Worst falafel I have ever had. Laziest gyros I have ever laid my hands on. I say lazy because gyros are supposed to be pita bread stuffed or rolled up with fillings. These guys didn't even roll up the gyros. It was just an open faced pita bread topped with some lettuce, ranch (not even tahini) and some lousy, soggy falafel. The falafel was not even real falafel. It was like the veggie patty Subway uses in their veggie delete sandwich. This is purely dishonest business practice. Do they buy their supplies at a gas station or what? Tasted so bad. Great food. Great service. I stopped by this place on my way home from work today. I knew it was there and I heard great reviews from some of my neighbors- so I finally gave it a try. I ordered a beef rice plate for myself, a chicken rice plate for my mother-in-law, and a hamburger for my daughter. The food was delicious! The beef was tender and full of flavor. It also came with a side salad and rice. My daughter gobbled the burger quickly with much delight. Finally, I was surprised that my mother-in-law finished her entire meal - she normally eats like half of what she was served but she liked it so much that she ate the whole thing!
