So a few things. First and foremost the check in at this place takes an ungodly amount of time. Expect to stand in line for 45 minutes plus when checking in. If you're active duty and what to visit friends here on island and plan to catch up at the pool, don't. There are NO DAY PASSES available. This is despite that literally every hotel around Hale Koa offers them. Also despite the pool being incredibly low census. There's hardly anyone there. So the capacity and space is there. Claiming covid is no longer an acceptable reason. Towels are provided at the pool. You're allowed to take them to the beach. There are multiple places to eat. All are affordable options. The luau is mediocre and not worth it. Don't waste the money on the extra expensive seats. The view is basically the same from every seat. The best thing on the menu is Mai tais. They use multiple fresh ingredients to make them. We'll worth the $10. Parking is expensive even if you're staying at the hotel. $20 is ridiculous for parking when you already paid for the room and they have a massive garage that is a ten minute walk to. You HAVE TO make reservations for breakfast or you get glared at and told to wait. The Hilton next door is often cheaper and has a better pool area. Better off staying there. read more

So with this hotel you must be in the active military or a retired veteran to book. The rooms are fine but no real views from the tower we are staying in. There is an adult pool that closes early (5pm) and a main pool no idea how early it closes. Neither pool had bar servers but the bar is very close to the main pool not the adult pool. WOW. The adult pool is closed off from the beach and relatively small for the number of grown folks that are booked here. Over all it's nice. Has a couple of restaurants and a grill (restaurant). Over all good for the price in Waikiki as far as hotels go. There is a good amount of beachfront that adds to the hotel being good to book. read more

We spent our Christmas at the Hale Koa Hotel. We were so overdue for an R&R and that's exactly what we got. My husband paid for the Up Upgrade and we had the perfect room with views of the park and beach, fabulous sunsets. Room with wrap around balcony, elegant bathroom shower, huge TV, few steps to the ice machine and no noise pollution. The hotel was decked with fabulous Christmas decorations and outstanding Christmas trees and lights. The restaurants were busy but we got in with no problem every night. The menu selection at the "Biba's" was fantastic and the food was delicious and portions huge. For breakfast at Koko's offered a wonderful selection and the coffee was always hot the view was amazing. At both restaurants the staff was pleasant, accommodating and friendly, good crew and good service. Not having the pool open at longer hours was not an issue. The walk around the property was so relaxing and tropical, loved it every day. Even though we live here on island going to the Hale Koa was so relaxing and felt like we were away on vacation. A breath of fresh air. Definitely we will make it a more frequent staycation there. Loved every minute of our vacation there. Spending our 2020 Christmas at the hotel was so special, we'll definitely will do it again, and more frequent. read more

Visiting Waikiki for my daughter's spring break we stayed at Hale Koa. This was my first time staying here, my husband has stayed 3 times. It's a beautiful hotel with virtually everything you could want within the hotel. Nice restaurants, nice spa, nice gym. Lots of places to relax and kick back outside of the hotel room. Parking just across the street. This hotel is in walking distance of everything downtown. I was disappointed in the pool. It's extremely small for this size hotel. And honestly it wasn't clean...you could see a film floating on top of the water...being honest it was gross. To be fair I understand that construction for a new pool which seems to be really large is underway. The only other complaint I have is while our room had a refrigerator it was inside the bathroom so was the coffee maker. Just a really odd configuration. We enjoyed our stay and will absolutely visit again. read more

If you know me at all I love being treated good and boy howdy did this place impress me. If you are retired military, active or a DAV you have got to come here and enjoy life. Everything here is top notch at a price that is absolutely affordable. It is easily 1/3 to 1/4 the price of any hotel on Waikiki with all the amenities of any upper class hotels here. You pay by the room and added little people do not drive the cost up like other hotels. An adult pool and a family pool with a kids area that includes a splash park and new water slides. Three restaurants, all of which are fairly priced, a shoppette (px), salon, barber and a spa that will massage your worries away. You are on a military installation so security is a thing and we saw plenty of civilian security guards mixed in with our MPs. Which I appreciate in today's world. read more

For the cost and experience they provide to the guests. There is no hotel/lodging that can compare to Hale Koa anywhere in Honolulu/Waikiki beach. The hotel lobby, grounds and amenities are top notch. The rooms have plenty of space, atleast for a hotel that's sitting on Waikiki beach. The amenities provide you with almost anything you need...and the hotel has a number of close by ABC stores if you're not satisfied. The check in process is seamless. The lobby is fancy and very welcoming. There is a Starbucks in the lobby, a restaurant, a bar/lounge, and breakfast/brunch restaurant. There's a BX by the garden if you need anything real quick...walk towards the awesome garden and there's the pool, a snack/fast food place, and another walk in bar. There's another pool with a slide that sits right by the beach as you keep walking towards the beach. We've stayed at a few other places in Waikiki between hotels and AirBnB's...and I can't believe I never looked into trying it here. It's very family friendly! The pool with a "water park" slide is sitting right beside the beach if your kids aren't into the beach thing...you can't beat that. Though upon writing this review we are under Covid restrictions so a few of the amenities are limited, I can only imagine how much fun it would be for families if everything here were open. read more

We had an amazing experience at the Hale Koa. We lived in Hawaii for three years and stayed here for 10 days while moving away. The food options on the property were great. We ate breakfast at Happys nearly every day. We ate dinner at Bibas a few times, but received rude remarks from the hostess each time. The exchange downstairs is very convenient. Our only complaints were about the pool, and the beds. With covid you have to make a reservation for the pool. They have it broken up into time slots, and I feel the time slots should be larger and they should be extending the pool hours. The pool closes at 5 and it would be a great spot to enjoy the sunset. The beds (atleast ours) were EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Like you wake up in pain uncomfortable. The pillows are just as bad and offer no support. Other than those issues, it's an amazing resort with Disney World level staff and we will return if we move back to Hawaii. read more

Came here for Easter Sunday dinner buffet. Located in the Hale Koa hotel, you do need a military ID or have the DOD ID card to enter the restaurant. The buffet had a limited selection of food as compared to other buffets, but the food was high caliber in preparation and taste. The crab legs were soft, moist and full unlike most places where the crab legs are either dry or have hardly anything in them. The prime rib was perfectly cooked and the other entrees like the ham and lamb were soft and flavorful. I also enjoyed the salad bar, the quinoa and Greek salads were quite yummy. The desserts were exceptional, I keep going back for the coconut panna cotta and the cream brûlée. The also have an ice cream bar with a variety of toppings. My only complaint is that they don't take reservations and we had to wait over an hour to be seated. Otherwise, an exceptional buffet and reasonably priced. Will come again. read more

The location and beach can get any better, yes you have to pay for parking, but all the resorts charge. Lots to do and see, take tours, the resort offers activities, shows, quite a few food choices. Everything is well maintained but could use some updating, that's the truth. I stayed for 2 days before going on a cruise, very convenient to everything locally, I would recommend a rental car to really explore, this is my 4th time to Hawaii, it never disappoint!! read more

The Hale Koa is at Fort DeRussy right on the beach in Waikiki (the old ladies at the bus stop and Hawai'ians pronounce it Why-KIki with the emphasis on the first KI)! It's 5 hotels from the Sheraton... the Sheraton can be reached by following the sand left past the slide (main) pool. Keep going when you run out of path and you see small shops snd it looks like the beach has dwindled to nothing... at high tide there's still a small band of beach... keep going! A narrow path will again appear and you'll see chain link fencing... keep going. It's not far. During Covid you'll need to make a reservation the day before to get into the pool area, which also includes the adult only infinity pool. The quiet adult pool where's the old people snooze and read is open without reservation. That one closes down most days by 8p abd the Main pool by 5p. What's with that?? This is a really nice hotel and quiet. We were only able to stay because my sons are USAF and sponsored us. Military sponsors need to be staying while you stay, but their ID system makes it easy to walk around solo abd even buy things you might need (hat, sunscreen, beer, etc) at the PX Exchange (called PX not BX because it's an Army Post) not a Base). The hotel has valet service and the check in staff was friendly and super helpful. They can hold your luggage and also offer an early check in when feasible. Bus stop is almost at the door. Easy transport from the airport, which was a big plus since our ride fell through after they couldn't pick up their rental car! Modernization going on for some elevators-- expect a wait. Happy I stayed here. Pools are nice! Bibas Grill ok. PX convenient. Beds comfortable. Hotel and grounds super clean! read more

Zero stars for the concrete slab they call a bed. The housekeeping staff was friendly and really helpful as well as the front desk staff when we called down at 22:00 hoping for a rollaway or something else to sleep on other than the lanai furniture. They were able to locate a bed topper to use for the night. We ended up checking out and driving home early because the bed was causing additional back problems. We also weren't aware about a child safety check pool policy that is quite restrictive. We've never been to a pool with such a strange policy that the kids must get out at the top of the hour for 15 min. What a perfect way to extinguish any fun the kids are having. We will definitely remember next time to book our staycation at the Hilton Hawaiian Village next door just to have a comfortable bed. read more

My cousin invited me, hubby, and our daughter to a luau here. They have a ticket office where you can purchase tickets to the luau. You basically have to purchase the tickets that day. My uncle, who is my mom's brother, treated us to the luau. It didn't start until after 5 pm. The luau was held downstairs. As we entered, we were given leis made out of shells. We were offered an alcoholic drink. I think it was a rum drink or maybe a Mai Tai. Lol Then, there was music and a guy who climbed up a tree. So cool. After an hour, we finally got seated. You're assigned a table number. Unfortunately we sat towards the back which was fine. We still got an amazing view. Our waiter came out with appetizers like poi, pineapple, and pickled cucumbers. Then our main course came out. It consisted of lau lau, chicken, mahi mahi, sweet potato and scoop of rice. Everything was pretty good. The dessert was the best part. It was a raspberry cake. I ended up getting two since the waiter got lots of leftovers. To drink, there was water, tea and coffee. Our famous host was Glenn Mederios. He was known for the song "Never gonna change my love for you.' He is so amazing and hosted the luau. He made the crowd laugh. It was such an honor seeing him. The luau ended around 10 pm I think. It ran for a few hours which was great. I truly enjoyed the entertainment. You can also purchase pictures because they take group pictures in the beginning. Located on the Makai side of the Hale Koa hotel, the Barefoot Bar is a great place to relax, people or sunset watch, and listen to live music. As it is open to the public, you will need to show your military ID for discounts on food & drinks. They will also validate parking for the parking lot on the Ft Derussy side. Went there with some workmates after a workshop. Food & drinks were pretty typical bar staples, nothing to go out of your way for. Great vantage place for the sunset, it really reminds you why it's luck we live in Hawaii. Great place to take out-of-towners to soak up the rays and enjoy life. Repeat and recommend. read more

The hotel is beautiful. It is a military hotel and books up pretty quickly so make your reservations well in advance. It only took me 2 minutes to walk from my room to the beach. They have a small exchange, a few restaurants, 2 pools, a fitness center, cheap parking, nightly entertainment, and air conditioning. The last thing being the best of all! There is a nice restaurant buffet that offers breakfast and dinner. There is also a small shop that has some fast food items like hot dogs, mozzarella sticks, breakfast plates, bagels, pastries, etc. It's relatively cheap which is nice. Right next door is a bar that has drinks and reduced pricing for military. The exchange also has coffee, nachos, etc. There is a Java hut that opens in the morning with some coffee, tea, and small items. There is also a bar that is only open for a short time but has cheap food and happy for drinks. I wish I had know all of this while I was staying at my other hotel. I could have saved a ton of money. They have a nice luau you can purchase tickets for. Part of the show is a fire dancer. I even liked it better than the one at the Polynesian Cultural Center. If you get the chance to stay here, I highly recommend it. read more

I came here for a wedding. The staff did wonderful. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the ballroom. It was passed the guest elevators. Anyways, there was plenty of room in the entrance - the newlyweds had the photobooth, guest sign in, and bar. Inside was very spacious and the guests had a great view of the program. The buffet was on the opposite side of the entrance - there was plenty of room for the crowd and the banquet captain did a great job in directing the guests. The night went smoothly and most importantly the newlyweds were happy :) This hotel caters to the people who serve in the military. You will need someone to sponsor you to come and enjoy its facilities. Remember to validate your ticket!! It's easiest to pay before you leave, but you can also pay at the gate if you prefer. The hotel rates are very reasonable and have a great view of the beach or the city. I haven't been in a room yet, but will update my review when I do! read more

This restaurant serves buffet, and being invited twice, once for brunch and another for dinner, the buffet has a fine spread of choices: Lamb - 5 stars - their lamb was deliciously the best item (if you love lamb like I do) drizzled with a light mint sauce mixed with other ingredients. I wish I had more, but I also had a filling lunch the same day so wasn't able to eat and enjoy the flavor as much as I could have. Prime rib - 2 stars - don't go for the prime rib, go for the lamb instead. The meat was very chewy and I didn't care for the au jus. Crab legs - 5 stars - all you can eat, you can't go wrong. The chef gives you a certain amount at a time. At first it was cold, but as everyone grabbed it, the new batches were mildly hot. Melted butter provided at a small table near the chef. Salmon - 5 stars - cooked just right, soft, juicy and delicious. Dessert 5 stars - a few tarts and cakes, and 3 different flavored icecream. Brunch items - they had make your own waffles and all sorts of breakfast sausages, starch and dessert. Located next to the beach so a nice view of the ocean in the morning and if eating dinner on friday night, a beautiful and close view of the fireworks. $3 validated parking across hale koa hotel for 6 hours to enjoy walking around Waikiki after. In regards to the pickleball courts near the post office. I wish could give there no stars. My father made reservations for our family to play pickleball this evening. So I went to the the bell desk to get the fob pass to get in the courts but when we got there the gates were pad locked. Basically no communication between the security who locks the gates and the person in charge of the pickleball courts. Once you guys learn how to communication with each other then simply send out a notification that the courts will be closed for whatever reason to whoever had reservations. And Assistance Manage Tony wasn't any help at all. Felt like he was more concerned that my 72 year old father in law didn't bring his ID himself to the bell desk -repeated himself 5 times and over talking me. He missing the whole point of a retired veteran trying to enjoy time with the family but instead having a really bad experience. read more

Great live music and a great atmosphere. It's right next to the sand on the beach so it's just such a refreshing atmosphere during any time of the day. During busy times it might be hard finding a seat, but you can just stand around, hang out around the bar, and listen to the live music while you wait for someone to leave. The perfect place to stay for my first visit to Hawaii. Comfortable room with roll in shower (ADA access) for my elderly Veteran mother, a mini fridge, in room safe, nice size dresser, coffee maker with coffee supplied, and a lanai with an amazing (8th floor) view! Every morning I enjoy watching parasailing and boats while eating breakfast on the lanai. Mother (age 97) is comfortable using the roll in shower independently with a sturdy shower bench, adjustable height hand spray, and controls within easy reach. Breakfast is not included in the room rate, so we purchased microwave items, granola & milk at the exchange on the ground floor. The pools are very nice, with plenty of lounge chairs, shade, and fluffy towels provided. Restaurant options from fancy to take out are available on the property, and a wide variety of dining choices are within walking distance. Getting around with mothers 4 wheel rollator/transport chair has been especially accessible at the hotel, along the beach, and around Waikiki too. Best of all, is that mother was able to go ON the sand and IN the ocean with a special beach chair that floats! read more

I appreciate all the excellent reviews of the Hale Koa, but for anyone who knows what the Hale Koa USED to be like it's now a sad shell of a place. Let's do this in a pro's and cons list shall we? Pros: 1. Great location! Right on Waikiki Beach! Beautiful property, the huge banyan tree in the center is a real gem. The open lobby is great too! 2. Reasonably priced! Considering it's a military hotel, that's how it should be! 3. Ample parking in the garage across the street. Cons (these are in no particular order, just as I remember them): 1. Lighting on the property needs to be improved, several of the paths are too dark at night. We saw lights buried in amongst the plants and trees that didn't work and look like they had been abandoned instead of repaired. 2. Everything closes way too early! A bar that's only open until 10pm?! Restaurants that close at 8pm?! No 24hr minimart? Even ABC stores are open 24hrs! We got there on a Sunday and absolutely everything on the property was closed! No restaurant, no bar, no pool, no minimart, nothing! 3. Crappy adult pool. Pools closed too early as well and the adult pool was rarely open, even when it was scheduled to be. Sad. 4. Bar prices have gone up too much! It's now just about the same price as all the other hotels on the beach, this is a military bar! 5. No handicap access/disabled access!! The place has stairs everywhere! If you're disabled/wheelchair bound you have very limited ways to get around the property. (If you're in doubt, try getting to the "Warriors Lounge" from the beach. Except the warriors lounge will probably be closed when/if you get there. Or go from your room to the minimart, same problem. 6. The room decor is tired. All white linens and towels, too industrial. Bars on the sad concrete, balcony. You're on vacation, not in an institution! 7. You have to pay for parking. Stupidly expensive rates, again trying to "keep up" with the other hotels on the beach. 8. NO MORE BARS!! Just overpriced drink windows, no place to sit and enjoy a mai tai on the beach anymore. They made the place entirely too "kid friendly" with everything geared towards families. I get that, but not all military people have young kids. A nice quiet adult venue or pool that was open consistently and didn't close at 10pm would be great. Again, they used to have this, but now it's all gone. We talked with several guests and they all were sad about the changes. 9. RUDE STAFF! I went to the pool bar and was told that I couldn't have outside food or drinks, I basically had to buy something. THIS IS NOT A RULE! NEVER HAS BEEN! This is the rude waitresses at the pool bar trying to get tips. Here's a tip, "Don't be rude to your customers" we are paying the resort fee so we have access to the resort! Not to have to argue with money hungry idiots. 10. There used to be music playing and water available in the lobby. No more Aloha spirit. Now it's cold and "hurry up" attitude is everywhere. There are also construction style barriers that block off areas like the pools and bars when they're closed. Really? Is that necessary? They also have MP's in uniform wearing body armor and carrying guns riding around in golf carts. Do any of the other hotels have this? I haven't heard of any terrorist activity on Waikiki that would necessitate this kind of security. Again, no aloha. 11. No more car rental on-site. This used to be a really convenient thing for people, now you basically have to rent a car at the airport which is a hassle. 12. In desperate need of a fresh young staff! It seems that the majority of the hotel is staffed by older filipinos. This isn't racist, just a factual observation. We went to a beach bar at another hotel and there were young active entertaining bartenders and happy young people serving drinks! Energy and music and life! Not sad old people searching for tips. The Barefoot bar "live music" was terrible too. Save your money and just play the radio, as long as it's not just an "oldies" station all the time (that's basically what the live music was.) 13. The room fridge is too small and froze everything we put in there. The room coffee service was old and horrible. Even motel 6 has a Keurig in the room. And no microwave in the room. You had to walk down to the laundry room and that's where you find a vintage 1988 microwave. Only one for the entire floor! It was broken and they just put a sign on it and left it there for over a week! So sad. Ok, to wrap up, you can see why I'm saying that a lot of money has been wasted at the Hale Koa on supposed improvements (all I can tell that they did was replace the old room carpet with a cheap "wood" laminate flooring. It's sad to see what SHOULD BE the best hotel on Waikiki turn into a tired old hotel that reminds you of the crappy motel in the movies. Get your act together Hale Koa! We came back here for Mother's Day and the food was much better! Thy have more selection when it's for a special occasion, so I recommend coming here during those days if you have the chance. They had two stations of the same foods set up so there was never a line or empty buffet items (with the exception of the desserts and ice cream station). The prime rib and steamed snow crab were never empty and super fresh! The snow crab was cooked perfectly - really moist and the meat was so sweet! I honestly didn't need the butter. The highlights for the hot food were: Prime rib/steamed snow crab legs Salmon in creme sauce with spinach (so good!) Super soft butter rolls lol Salad and chilled seafood bar: Really fresh raw oysters (my favorite) Imitation crab and broccoli salad Pineapple coleslaw The desserts were good too. The carrot cake was the best. I didn't get ice cream because the line was always long. The service was on top of it and the place is really spacious and clean. I love staying at the Hale Koa. This 3 star review is because your new management company has forgotten who they are serving. Prices have monumentally increased, and it's not just due to Covid-19 or supply chain issues. The resort was intended to be a place of rest and relaxation for the military and their family. People who have served our nation, and made tremendous sacrifices. These people are not wealthy. Why did prices double at the bar? (Mai Tai's are now $9, Beer $7/$9) Last year everything was $5. Add $10 per person to any dining experience you might enjoy too. Luau - 5 Stars Pool - 5 Stars Customer Service - 5 Stars Remodeled Rooms - 3 stars...the new floor is awful. Lots of sand sticks to your feet and ends up in the beds. Mongolian Grill - 0 Stars...please, please, please bring this back! Bare Foot Bar and Grill: 2 Stars - fantastic service, but beverages and snacks are way overpriced. Hale Koa means "House of the Warrior". To your management team, please remember that you are serving the warriors and their families of this great nation. Please do not make them break the bank just to enjoy time to relax together. Koko at Kalia is located at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki. Walk past the front desk all the way back to the waterfront side of the hotel. Parking is at a separate structure across from the hotel which is a bit of a walk. Remember to bring your parking stub for validation at the restaurant. A validated ticket will be $3 for the parking. The restaurant is well decorated, open, with comfortable seating. We went on a night when it was a "Island Style Shrimp Fest" buffet. Shrimp was served in all different styles... peel and eat, shrimp fried rice, cajun shrimp, sea food boil, Kauai scampi prawns, shrimp tempura etc. There were several pork and beef dishes in the menu which was a nice inclusion in the buffet. The food was great, flavorful and fresh. The Kauai Scampi Prawns were freshly prepared right in front of you and were one of my favorites. Various desserts and an ice cream bar rounded out the dinner menu. Service was friendly and efficient. My iced tea and water were always topped off. This is a great island buffet that is worth the trip to Waikiki. By the way, its only accessible if you have someone in the military in your party, active or veteran. read more

We have stayed in Ko Olina, Turtle Bay, and Kahala resorts before and we loved those places, but friends highly recommended the Hale Koa since we have a 7 and 4 year olds and to take advantage of my active-duty status. Here's a summary of our stay at the Hale Koa: Half the elevators did not work. Multiple times, I stood nearly 15 mins waiting for one! Also, the pools closes at 5 pm! Why?! What good reason to close at 5 pm when all other resorts still have theirs open? Also, no outside food allowed at the pools either and our son is the pickiest of eaters. Though I understand the hot tubs are not meant for kids under 5, my daughter was 3 weeks away from turning 5 (brought passport for proof). It was overcast all week and windy so the pool water was too cold for her, she just wanted to warm up for a minute. Instead a snarky lifeguard comes and tells me to read the sign and rules! read more

We love the Hale Koa and stay here regularly. However, my last encounter with Kyong at the front desk was a big disappointment. She was rude and unprofessional. That is, until my retiree husband approached the front desk. Suddenly she was polite and friendly. I realize I'm the dependant spouse but...how sad. read more

Just a great place for active and retired military members. Right on a private beach, very nice eating venues, older but very nice rooms, terrific staff, BX in the basement, down town Honolulu right out front........ what more could one ask for? And the price is right!! read more

i cannot say enough good things about our experience at this hotel. from the moment we checked in to our check out... everything was so top notch. the service is incredibly polite and friendly. the facilities were recently remodeled and SO NICE. the services on site were SO SO easy that our family never had to leave (if we didn't want to). there is a px on site for food/snacks/souvenirs/last minute toiletries. one of my absolute FAVORITE parts of the hotel though, was the new kids pool/splash pad area. it's HUGE, clean, and perfect for kids of all ages. we were at the pool all morning and day. there was plenty of seating, tons of space, and a water slide for older kids/adults. we also went to a luau onsite that had a military twist, which was really nice. hale koa sits next to the hilton hawaiian village hotel and is on the beach. absolutely GORGEOUS place for families, couples, and anyone looking for a tropical getaway. read more

Wonderful luau. Brought family from the mainland... Their first time in Hawaii, first time at a luau, and they (and we) had an amazing time! Immediately after entering, we were greeted and offered a drink (given a choice between an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink). We were then led to a photographer where we were able to take a picture with a couple of the dancers. (note: during the show, someone will come up and offer you the framed picture for $20 each. A little pricey, but it is a good memento for your visit to a luau in Hawaii. We got it for our family :). There are various activities before you get to your seat, so you can get a taste of different "arts and crafts" Polynesia has to offer. We had amazing seats, right in front of the stage. The dancers were beautiful and ON FIRE! Actually, be prepared for fire, literally, as it is part of the show. You will get to experience various cultural dances...experience Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, and Aotearoa. In fact....get up on stage and show everyone what you learned! Near the end of the show, there's an opportunity to, if you're brave enough. ;) We also liked how the show honored our currently serving, veterans, and fallen heroes of our United States Military. Easily the best hotel deal is Hawaii (for military only)! Great hotel with two pools, multiple bars and restaurants, Waikiki Beach right outside the door, Great rooms, service, and parking. You can do it all right from the Hale Koa, whether you are their for work or recreation, by yourself or with your family. Reservations can be difficult to get if you aren't on orders or on active duty, but it is doable of you can commit far enough out. It is better to reserve and cancel than to not reserve in time. Everything in Honolulu and Waikiki is close to the Hale Koa, but you will need a car to get out to see the rest of the island. Unbelievable sunsets may be visible from your room, if not there are beaches and parks all around that will make the experience a highlight of your time on the islands. The food and drinks we had in the hotel were limited because there is so many great bars and restaurants around the island, but everything we had was great. Don't delay if you are eligible. One trip will lead to another. read more

The beds were really comfortable. However, I did hear a banging noise every night from the air conditioner or the elevator. Thankfully, I could only hear the noise for a split second. The washer and drying machines did not work properly. Plus, we had to use a credit/debit card to pay. Many guess will have to call the company over the machines to get a refund. I called a hotel staff member to help me take wet clothes out a washer that wasn't working. Once we found a washer that worked the dryer beside it didn't. I witnessed the staff member take an out of order sign off a nonworking dryer. I had to go to 2 different floor levels of the hotel to find a washer and dryer that worked. After one cycle of drying my clothes were still damp. I didn't want to use my credit card a fourth time. I literally had to air dry my clothes before my flight back home. I will give the hotel 4 stars because it's a beautiful hotel and I had a partial ocean view. Besides these little hiccups the hotel has great customer service and I enjoyed my stay. read more

Great place to stay with many amenities. They have two beautiful pool areas, a great beachfront bar with discount drinks for military, great ocean view rooms available and an awesome beach directly in front of hotel property. Our room was a great ocean view with front and side views of Waikiki beach. Friday nights they have an awesome fireworks show and next door is the Hilton Hawaiian village which is also a great place to shop and eat. I highly recommend for active and retired military and their families. read more

ZERO VEGAN OPTIONS!! This beautiful military hotel has almost everything you could want UNLESS you a a vegan. Almost 3 years since our last stay here and still after endless requests they do not offer any vegan options. Seriously, it would be very beneficial for at least 90% of the guests who stay here to have healthy options. Unfortunately, all requests have and continue to fall on deaf ears. FYI, iceberg lettuce has zero nutritional value and I am personally insulted that was suggested as an option. read more

I really appreciated being able to have an affordable place to stay during a port call. Everyone is really friendly and will likely strike up a conversation in the elevator/lobby because everyone has some connection to the military. The room rates are based on rank. They were about the cost and quality of a Hampton Inn. They were clean but nothing spectacular. The pillows were lumpy and awful...probably the most uncomfortable I've ever experienced. My neck was in pain the entire trip and I started using my travel neck pillow. We were lucky and got upgraded to ocean views during check-in. It was a treat to wake up each morning with the vast ocean. They have three pools including an adult only pool. Unfortunately the bar is sort of a hike from the pool/there is no pool service. The bar seemed to have at least 4 bartenders but there were always long lines and during the evening it could take almost 15-20 min to get a drink. Location, location, location: It is in walking distance of the main Waikiki beach strip and Hilton Village. The Ala Moana mall is about a mile walk but definitely do able. They have a parking lot across the street and you can rent cars from the lobby. read more

I have been to the Hale Koa on seven trips, the first in 1994 and the most recent last year. The Hale Koa was great, and we enjoyed it, but the previous two visits have shown that changes have not been for the better. The food is not good. We spent 90% of our food money outside the hotel. The menus do not match the vendors and restaurants outside Hale Koa. Also, the management brags that they have made $8 million in capital improvements but forgets to tell you that it was spent over ten years. Considering how much revenue Hale Koa generates, that is not much money on capital improvements. There are so many areas that have gone downhill: pools closing early, the travel agents giving incorrect information or not knowing what tours are available (we booked our inter-island tours online, the travel desk didn't have any), poor food, promised refunds not given for bad food, reduced entertainment ( they used to have several shows each week, not anymore). The Hale Koa was so much better when it was run by local management rather than the corporate NAF managers. After many visits, we are done and will look to stay on the local economy, Airbnb, and VRBO. The prices and cooking facilities more than makeup for the Hale Koa and restaurant costs. read more
