My friend has raved about Hale Vietnam's imperial rolls for a long time now. I finally got around to trying them and I've got to say... they were pretty damn good. The filling is rather unique because there are so many different flavors inside of the roll itself. The outer wrapping is also different than your usual spring roll - this one is much chewier and clear in color rather than golden brown. I got the lemongrass chicken bún (vermicelli), my go-to order at Vietnamese restaurants. The chicken was pale in color and not as saucy as I expected. Still, the flavor was nice and the portion was very large. The BBQ pork was tender and extremely flavorful. Overall, I enjoyed the meal, but wouldn't go out of my way to revisit (and if I did, it would only be for the imperial rolls). read more

We have been going here for the last 15 years or so and it is always good ...... tofu curry extra spicy with no cauliflower, temple rolls, eggplant tofu, bbq shrimp extra spicy, green papaya salad with tofu, and on occasion the seafood pho. The servers are all overly attentive and nice about all my side requests - sometimes its weird to have them stare while you eat but we tune it out...... Hale Vietnam is a staple in Kaimuki and has already established itself as one of the top Vietnamese restaurants in Hawaii. The large crowd of people waiting outside for a table is clearly an indicator that this is the place to go! It's probably been a decade or close to it since the last time I've been here. That, or my memory is failing me. In any case, the interior feels and looks exactly the same since the last time. There's a giant Buddha right in front of the entrance, and you can help but to run his belly. :) Also, you can't help and notice the shades of green from the walls to the tabletops to the Sriracha bottle caps. The restaurant is very spacious and very comfortable and clean. I came here with my girl for dinner, and was greeted immediately and got a table. We started our meal with the Temple Rolls, which is a vegetarian roll with mostly tofu and cellophane noodles wrapped with romaine lettuce, basil, and mint. The filling was tasty and the vegetables were fresh. The sweet and sour sauce was tasty and went very well with the roll. This is a very simple dish that's light and satisfying. We ordered the Combination Pho with everything. That's always the best way to go! When the Pho arrived, it didn't look very appetizing, because it had several clumps of bubbles afloat on top of the broth, which I probably should have sent back after some reflection. The bowl of Pho looked very bare. My mind was screaming, "where's all my meat!?" For a Pho with everything, I'd expect to seem some of the meat near the top. In fact, I didn't even see any noodles! But after some digging, everything was there. The tripe, tendon, brisket, rare steak, beef balls, shank. My immediate thought when I first tasted the broth was how clean and savory it was. After a few more sips, I was began to wonder where was the beefy taste. I got more MSG than anything else. Yes, it tasted good, but I don't want to drink a glass of water each time I drink the broth. Overall, the Pho tastes and feels different from what you can get in Chinatown. I have a feeling this place adjusts its taste to fit their clientele. You get a big bowl of Pho with a lot of broth, but not much of anything else. Even the plate of bean sprouts and basil was bare. The service was good with friendly and attentive staff. I really enjoyed eating here. The place wasn't too crowded. And I was with my two homeboys who always come here so they told me what to order. I ordered the imperial rolls and ox tail pho. Normally when I eat imperial rolls, or any rolls for that matter, I just dip it into the dipping sauce that usually comes with the rolls. However, my buddy ordered some chili paste on the side. He told me to mix the chili paste with the dipping sauce. That just elevated the dipping sauce to a whole entire level. It was spicy and sweet. And it paired really nicely with the deep fried rolls. The ox tail pho typically comes with rice noodles. My buddy told me to substitute egg noodles for rice noodles. The egg noodles were so much better than the rice noodles. They serve fresh ginger on the side. They cut the ginger into skinny slivers instead of mincing it. That way when you mix the ginger with shoyu, you can actually eat the pieces of ginger along with the ox tail. The broth was delicious and the ox tail was cooked perfectly. Pho Out! Hale Vietnam is one of several good Vietnamese restaurants located in the Kaimuki area. They serve what would be deemed conventional and popular Vietnamese dishes, the Pho, curry and bun dishes coming to mind immediately. Now this is similar to what others serve so what makes Hale Vietnam different? Consistency of execution. Over the years we have come here for both sit down and take out. Of the many Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese restaurants we have tried, they have been very consistent in the taste of the broth, curries and sauces used in their dishes. The Pho is right up there with the best Hawaii has to offer. Flavorful broth with an abundance of meat, sliced thin to compliment the noodles and veggies that one adds to the mixture. The summer rolls are rolled perfectly with just the right amount of noodles, shrimp and chicken. The sauce dip that accompanies the rolls is perfecto! Service with a smile. Always polite, always attentive without being obtrusive, we really enjoy dining in, because you never feel rushed, the food always comes out hot, the veggies for the Pho are always fresh and the water is always filled at reasonable intervals. The pricing for their dishes is on the higher side but not unreasonable. For the quantity, consistency and flavor the pricing is fair. There are cheaper offerings in the area but they really are not as good as Hale Vietnam. Remember: "you get what you pay for". This place is really on the borderline of being a 3 or a 4 star place. However, I am rounding up as the pho was good here. Hale Vietnam is located in Kaimuki on 12th Ave, right off Waialae Avenue. While there is some street parking, you likely will need to park in the municipal lot nearby. Came here for dinner to get some pho. Pho costs more in Honolulu. It seems to be $1 or 2 dollars more than the Seattle area. It is a dish that I have found to be the same everywhere mostly. Yet, Hale Vietnam found a way to make the pho taste better than usual. I had a medium pho ($8.25) with rare brisket and beef tendon. For those concerned about the meat being rare, it isn't really rare. It is cooked, but not all the way which means the meat tastes more tender. The broth was flavorful on its own. I didn't need to douse any sriracha or any other sauce to make it taste better. Yelp review scores for this place are a bit low. Perhaps it is the other items that are dragging this place down. Though I can say that if you are looking for a pho fix, Hale Vietnam is a good option. But make sure to try one of their "rare" beef pho varieties for a better tasting pho. read more

I was helping my friend fix/redo his headlights on his Toyota Celica this morning, after I had finished, it was lunch time...........we couldn't decide what we wanted to eat for lunch this afternoon, until we decided to have some hearty noodles. Hale Vietnam, here we come! For today's fare, of course we had to have the pho., but besides the pho, we had to have an appetizer too. So today, this is what I had - For the appetizer, we had the stuffed chicken wings. A delicious deep fried chicken with some sort of stuffing in it. It also comes with some kind of sweet vinegar sauce....or is it some kinda fish sauce???? Don't know what it was, but you gotta put it on the chicken! For my pho, I took the #1 medium size beef noodle soup with flank steak, tendon, tripe, & rice noodles. The soup broth was very rich and flavorful, with the broth coming from the long simmering of the beef shank. The pho noodle dish comes with basil, bean sprouts, lemon, and green chili pepper on the side. You can put what ever you like with the pho........in my case, I like it all, so I dump it all into the pho! I like to squirt some hoisin sauce, and sriracha sauce (hot) into a separate dish, and dip my meat into the sauce before I down the delicious concoction. This is my second time going to Hale Vietnam. I wasn't quite sure why it was so long since but we decided to try it. It would be my husband's first time there. Once I sat down, I immediately knew why I hadn't come back. I'm more of a seafood pho kind of person and Hale Vietnam doesn't have anything on the menu like that. I usually like it with shrimp, fish balls, and squid. Since they didn't have that, I decided to try the chicken balls. It was okay. I think I just miss my fish balls. My husband got the flank and raw steak pho. He really enjoyed everything about his pho. We also ordered spring rolls. It was a little different from what we're used to. This one had imitation crab, which gave it an interesting taste. These spring rolls were very tasty. And what made it stand out from other restaurants is the amount of lettuce they give. Of all the pho places I've been to, they almost never have the right amount if leaves per spring roll. Most times, at other restaurants, we always had to split the last leaf or half it. read more

My son got food poisoned last night after eating the rare beef pho with tripe. He came home right after eating and he looked pale. I've had a few people tell me that this is their go-to spot for Vietnamese food, so finally gave it a try when we were in the area and starving after exercising. I've been stuck in a Vietnamese food phase lately! I tried the rice noodles with imperial rolls and pork. I like that they use the rice paper style wrapper for the rolls. The bowl had a generous amount of greens which is a plus! I dislike when the greens are skimpy in proportion to the noodles. The portion was generous and I couldn't finish it! I would order this again, but probably with tofu. I tried my girlfriend's pho and the broth was VERY flavorful. I will order my own bowl next time. Something about their broth stood out compared to most other pho places on the island. The servers were very warm and polite and left a welcoming impression. The broth here is flavorful but not too overpowering where you can't taste the meat and veggies. My go to is the chicken pho! The chicken here is moist and thinly cut. I also love the fact that they chop thinly slices of onions, green onions, and cilantro. Imperial rolls... bomb! Crispy outside and stuffed with tasty meat and veggies on the inside. Have always heard of Hale Vietnam but have never made the visit until now and I'm glad I did. I ordered my go-to pho tai in the medium size. They also have a large size which is ~$1.00 more. The pho came out nice and hot, with my steak slowly cooking in the broth. For a party of 6 they gave us two large plates of bean sprouts, basil, and all the fixings. One bite in and I was really impressed by the steak. From the tenderness of it to the texture and flavor. I love lean meat, but it didn't taste dry or tough like you would expect it to be. The broth was ok and didn't have as much flavor as I would've liked, but the meat made up for it as they were generous with the amount too. It's on the pricier side and parking isn't free, but I guess there has got to be some compromise for it being in the heart of Kaimuki town and next to Via Gelato. We ordered pho and spring rolls. Spring rolls plain not much flavor. The pho same. We used to come here and was good. Not so now. Also the interior changed also the bowls and chopsticks now stainless steel so we're guessing maybe under new ownership. Problem is for me I can't eat with slippery chopsticks and asked for wood ones like for take out. The server told me to tell the manager. I pleaded for wood chopsticks waitress said owner stubborn many people ask but owner say only for takeout I said I'm unable to eat and she took my Pho away and I sat there and watched my family eat. Ok I'll admit, I haven't been to Hale Vietnam in awhile BUT I used to come here quite a bit especially with my family. So I can't really say how the food has been recently but I always thought there pho was the best tasting. Since I don't like eating too much noodles, the broth is really important to me. I love that they put Chinese parsley in their pho (lots of places don't) and in everything else. They also make pretty awesome imperial rolls. A medium runs a little over $10 Imperial roll: deep fried spring rolls... Soo good! You get a piece of lettuce, add some noodles inside, and a spring roll.. Wrap it up and dip it in the light sauce that accompanies the dish.. So good Definitely my favorite place to get pho, and I love how the place (and bathroom) is clean. They put lots of meat, which I love! Also the broth is so delicious - inside the broth there are thinly sliced onions, green onions, and Chinese parsley. I don't usually post negative reviews but I really did not have a good experience here. I showed up with my partner, and was ignored when we walked in the door. We put our names down and waited. The waitress must have seen us, but did not make any verbal or nonverbal cues to acknowledge us at all. After a few minutes she pointed to a table that had been prepared with cups of water. She did not check our vaccination records or seek to obtain any pertinent information. Service was very lackluster, and got my order wrong. (I ordered steak and brisket pho, ended up getting steak+tendon+tripe) I ordered a Vietnamese coffee, and when she brought it, there was a long hair attached to the glass. Without saying anything, she just removed the hair, hoping that we wouldn't see anything. The main reason I had a negative experience here, was because while I was picking all the tripe and tendon from my pho, I found a beetle swimming in my soup. Aloha! First "5 stars" for Hale Vietnam, best Vietnamese food on Oahu, in my opinion. Should have written that along time ago! The reason I'm writing this today(5/15/2022) is because I was having lunch with my 12 year old daughter and her friend and we witnessed the rudest customer I have ever seen. He started a tirade on the waitress because he was served metal chopsticks. At the top of his lungs, threatening to go on yelp and "cost them clients" said he has been a customer for 20 years and was never coming back. And brought up he was going on Yelp to make sure they lose more customers over and over again. My daughter and her friends mouths were wide open I. Shock that he was doing this. I walked over to him and told him he was out of line and being a total kook. Anyways...just posting this to support Hale Vietnam, as they are amazing people and make delicious food for the community. Hale Vietnam is the go-to place for pho in Honolulu. During lunch and dinner there is always a line out the door, so there's a sign-in sheet just inside the front entrance. Food is quality, and service is good. Some coworkers and I went over to Hale Vietnam for dinner after a full day of meetings, and since were on the earlier side to dinner (6:15-ish), there was no line, but by the time we left, there were several groups waiting outside. If you like no lines, this isn't the place for you, but if you recognize that long lines mean good food, then come check it out. Pretty much all of us got some kind of pho, and one friend got spring roll bun. I ordered pho with beef, tripe, and tendon. My friend Jason said the tendon was really good here, and he was right! It was soft and melt-in-your mouth good! The pho came with lots of bean sprouts, basil, and jalapeños with a few wedges of lemon (2 plates to share among 7 bowls). My friend Naomi and I shared food, so I got to eat some of the bun too. Everything was good, but if I had one complaint it was that the noodles were slightly mushy. I've been to Hale Vietnam a bunch of times, and I'll be back again! Street parking is hard to find, so park in one of the paid lots.
