This bakery ruined my sons first birthday cake. I spent $600 on the cake that was supposed to be perfect. Drove all the way down to the bakery with characters I had purchased to be out in the cake. I spoke to the owner of how I wanted the cake to be done and where the characters were supposed to be placed. The day of the party the cake was delivered without the characters and I was very frustrated and upset. They sent another driver with the box of characters and I was inside getting my son ready and my guests were already there. The guy just placed the characters wherever he wanted instead of what I initially instructed which covered the customized topper I had brought and had placed on the cake. I finally came out and saw what had happened and I told him I didn't want them on the top. I told them to place the characters on the bottom. He then pulled them off which completely destroyed the top of the cake making it have dents and looked very messy. NOT to mention the cake was very dry not moist at all. I swear Vons cakes taste better. Very disappointing experience. The guy that delivered it ended up being one of the owners he said and would give a discounted refund for the unpleasant experience and ruining the cake. I didn't hear anything from them until I contacted them and the lady I had originally spoke to was very rude. Apologizing very coldly and laughing thinking it was not a big deal and offering me a 20% discount for my future order. I let her know I was very upset and will not be using them again as my son's first $600 birthday cake was supposed to be special and they destroyed it due to their irresponsibility. I told her I expect a refund for this huge disappointment. All the guests were asking why the top of the Cake looked like that and if it was dropped. The lady was just one of the owners started raising her voice at me over the phone as if she is the one that has the right to be more frustrated than me. I let her know that I was going to write this review and that I will no longer use their service and inform everyone else to be warned about this bakery. Very irresponsible and they do not take responsibility for their mistakes. Even though I clearly said I will not use your service again and I am not interested in a future discount but that they need to compensate me for the current situation just like any business with good customer satisfaction does. I have cameras all over my house the whole thing was recorded including the conversation. So I have proof that this happened and they cannot say any Differently to try and cover the mistake. I did not want to leave a review but the owner didn't mind and said go ahead and leave a review it's very clear that this place does not care about its customers nor their special events and are only about money. As a business owner myself this was a very shocking customer service experience. I do not recommend this place. I contacted Carolyn to help me with making a standout dessert display for my son's 4 year old birthday- with an Avenger theme. I knew that having all of those characters and colors would not only be a challenge, but I knew that it would also have a lot to live up to, what with all the colors and characters. And I have to state, Carolyn was superb in meeting that challenge. She not only superceded far beyond any of my expectations, but my son and our party guests were so impressed by the display. We ended up going with a two tier cake, 3 dozen cupcakes with fondant toppers and 2 dozen oreo pops. Yes, you're not paying grocery store prices, but I DARE anyone out there to find the artistry and quality of cake that Half Baked presents at a Ralphs or a Vons... heck I'm a big fan of Portos, and even they can not match what I received at Half Baked Co. So for ANYONE to complain that they're not paying $30 for a simple sheet cake, clearly hasn't had specialized cakes. Our display was so impressive that some guests even were hesitant to eat the items because it was all too pretty to eat! LOL! But once they got past that, they were also impressed with how delicious everything was. And just for information's sake, the flavors we chose were Death by Chocolate, Simply Vanilla, PB&J (which was the BIGGEST hit), Salted Caramel and Strawberries & Cream. Also, from beginning to end, Carolyn and her assistant Clavel were amazing at being honest (in flavors and looks for the ideas and conception) and giving us the best possible customer service. We couldn't have been more happy with how we were handled as customers. We don't live in the area, but if ever we throw another party again in LA/Burbank, we will be using Half Baked... shoot, even if we're just passing through, we'll somehow find a way to make use of them again. Where do I begin?!?! It's taken years to finally write a review for Halfbaked Bakery and I'm glad to finally take the time to do so. We learned our son was allergic to cow's milk and protein when he was a little under a year old. We had to be very cautious, read labels, educate friends and family so as to avoid his allergic reactions. I searched and searched for a bakery that offered all natural and vegan choices just to be safe and found Halfbaked, and I will tell you we are sooooooo happy we did! On a Friday evening my sister and I had a craving for cupcakes. With all of the awesome reviews, I knew I had to stop by. The place is super cute - it looks like a converted house or something. The girl who helped us was very nice and I love the fact that they frost the cupcakes as you order them. I bought a chocolate, lemon, honey/lavender and vanilla. I always order a vanilla cupcake when I try a new place... that's how you know if they're really good. The cupcakes were very cute and smelled yummy but I wish I would have read that they are made out of wheat flour. IMO, it made the cake very dense. My favorite was the honey/lavender probably because it was soaked in honey. I love the concept of them being healthy but it wasn't the kind of cupcake I generally go for. Just ordered a cake from Half Baked Co last week. I will give a full rundown of the pros and cons and you can decide if you want to use them! Pros- Service: I needed a custom cake for an event and had only 5 days notice. This might seem like enough, but 4 other places I called before said I needed 2 weeks notice! On their website, Half Baked says 48 hrs so that is GREAT for last minute requests! Design: We ordered a fondant 1/4 sheet cake with an edible design. It was a print out of our exact logo. It looked AWESOME! From other pics on Yelp, it looks like they can do almost anything! Communication: I was able to do everything on email, and just called with my credit card info. They were fast to return my emails and calls and made it all seamless to order. This was so helpful. Cons- Cake: I ordered vanilla, being that I thought that would be the most liked flavor by all but I definitely got a brown almost spiced cake kind of flavor. Odd. Also, I hate to say it but it was pretty flavorless from the cake to the frosting. It was also very dry. I had several coworkers tell me they liked my back up sheet cake (from Vons) better. Eeeek. Cost: I found their prices to be more expensive than other bakeries in the area by a good $50-$70+. I paid $165 for a 1/4 cake. If you are on a budget, this definitely is not the place for you. With that said, I will be giving Half Baked another go for a bridal shower I am planning because their design work and capabilities for customization are just too good! I was so disappointed with our vegan wedding cake. We picked it up on a Monday for our wedding on Wednesday, kept it refrigerated and followed the instructions on the box. We were told it would be fine. But the cake was insanely dry and wasn't at all red like I'd expect red velvet to be (or how it was during the tasting). They told me they've been here for years, but I just found them at the end of last year when I was looking for mini cupcakes to bring to a friend's birthday. She was celebrating at a winery, and told me not to bring anything...but I don't show up anywhere empty handed...so I wanted to surprise her with something sweet. They have mini cupcakes, cupcakes, cake pops, macaroons... and the list goes on, but those are the things that I've purchased. The mini cupcakes were a huge hit with everyone, and you can pick the flavors that you want since they're ordered ahead of time. As for their cupcakes...I'm a huge pumpkin fan, so I got that when it was a seasonal option. It was moist and fresh, and just the right spice. I had recently gotten one for a neighbor on his birthday...which I do every year from different places. But this was the first time afterwards that he asked me where I got it because he liked it so much. My husband ordered a cake from them for my birthday, then I ordered a cake kit and assembled it with my son for Father's Day, and yesterday I picked up cupcake for a co-worker's birthday. Everything has been absolutely delicious. The customer service is amazing. Where do I begin? I rarely write a poor review. I called 2 times today. The first time to be certain they were open (due to the CoVid 9 virus) and if they had gluten free cupcakes. I was in luck, yes and yes. I called back a while later and wanted to know if I can just come in and purchase the gluten free cupcakes at the store. The lady was very nice and said yes. I ordered a gluten free birthday cake. The rosettes cake for Valentine's Day. We ended up throwing out. The owner rebaked a regular death by chocolate cake but I cannot eat it. She did provide a gluten free salted caramel cupcake which was a kind gesture. I would only recommend this bakery for gluten free cakes if they use a different gluten free flour. I'm updating my review to reflect my last experience at Half Baked. Unfortunately they've changed their recipe since our last carrot cake purchase and the new recipe is pretty much inedible which is so disappointing- why change a delicious thing that works? I got the carrot cake again and we knew on first taste something was off. It was all buttercream which was overwhelmingly sweet and made us sick after a few bites. This cake was so different from the first amazingly delicious carrot cake we had ordered in the past and other cupcakes and cakes we'd had from Half Baked. So I called them thinking surely something got mixed up and they used all buttercream. On the phone I was repeatedly told they used cream cheese frosting and buttermilk icing and I must be mistaken. So I decided to drive there and show them in person the consistency, taste and color of what was clearly all buttercream. The manager didn't want to touch it or taste it, saying she was lactose intolerant but that it looked fine to her and maybe it was just their new buttercream recipe I was reacting to. When I told her again the cake was inedible and that I was going to go elsewhere to buy a new one, I pretty much just got a shoulder shrug and an "I'm sorry you feel that way". It was really disappointing to not even get an acknowledgement that the bakery may have made a mistake and potentially mixed up their frosting/buttercream measurements.
