Half Fast is a staple in the Boulder community, and I would argue some of the best sandwiches in Boulder. I visited numerous times while in school at CU, and this was always my go-to fast-casual food on the Hill. I visited this week during the COVID crisis while in Boulder, and it was still the same great (delicious) food as it has always been! The service was awesome as always, friendly staff and quick service. I had to enter to order food, there were maybe another 5 people in the restaurant waiting for their orders, but it is a big enough space that we were all able to socially distance. There were no guidelines given by the restaurant regarding where people should stand, and I didn't see anything about requiring the use of masks inside. All of the seating was blocked off so it was clear you had to take your food to-go. All of the staff were wearing masks - but not consistently. This made me a little uncomfortable considering they were preparing the food. I saw a couple of staff members who were trying to either talk with customers or each other remove their masks to talk, then put the mask back on. I understand it is difficult to communicate easily with them, but it seemed strange and did make me think twice about my order. Crazy pandemic times. I'll definitely be going back, and you should support this business too. I hope to continue to visit as the years go by when I am in Boulder! read more

Really good food but why is the turnaround time for a Caesar salad 45 minutes? I always put in my order 25-30 minutes before heading to this location and then I arrive and am told my order hasn't even been started and that it'll be 45 minutes or so Like yes, it can be busy sometimes, but it's a salad ............. A lettuce and parmesan salad..... it's a good salad, but not a 45 minute salad. Keep the $9.80 & your salad at that point. read more

This place is an absolute must if you're visiting Boulder! They have so many selections of subs, you say what you're in the mood for- and they have it. Craving a hot sub? They have it Craving a cold sub? They have it Craving a veggie sub? They have it Craving oriental food? They have an oriental sub Craving a Thanksgiving meal? They have a Thanksgiving inspired sub! This place literally covers any and all cravings for whatever you desire- in sub form! Since my most recent visit they've also started offering gluten free options on their menu as well. The bread is fresh, and you can tell they make it all right there. I had a buffalo chicken sandwich and the lettuce and celery were so crunchy and fresh mixed in with the hot sauce and blue cheese. They have a dang good happy hour menu with their pitchers of long islands- where else can you say that you drank a pitcher of a long island?! Our first time here was a couple years back, enticed by hearing its the largest sandwich menu in the US. It was tasty enough, but the main reason we decided to keep coming up fairly regularly from Denver over the years was the loyalty program/ stamp rewards card plus the excitement of trying out new sandwiches each time. Truthfully that excitement has faded as it feels every time they're out of ingredients so we have to order the same-olds (what's the point of having the nations biggest menu if only half of its available at a given time?) and they're super inconsistent with how they stamp rewards (sometimes we'd get 2 stars for one 14" alone, other times 1 star for the whole order despite multiple 14"s). After our most recent disappointment waiting 40 mins for a Tempeh Parmesan (they were out of eggplant) so skimpy it was hardly worth the price, I don't think we'll be back again. read more

I came here after seeing their sign while getting gas and boy was I in for a surprise. Their menu is HUGE but divided by meat (or veggie) which makes it much easier to navigate. I decided on the green turkey sub and loved how the different ingredients came together. I would have never considered to put sprouts, salsa, and avocado on a sub but it worked so well. I've been here once. Had a roast beef sandwich. It was good. But I have to be honest and say that I showed up and ordered at 1130a. Before the lunch rush, not a lot of people. Waited 20 minutes for my order. That's just too long. Snarf's is half that when they're busy. Sandwich came without a bag, without napkins. Napkin dispenser empty. I was in Boulder for the Shakespeare festival and we stopped to grab a sandwich. I ordered the new Turkey sandwich. It was a little too sweet for my taste and I did not realize it was a hot sub. If I had seen it before ordering I would have gotten one of the specials of day. It was busy, but the service was pretty bad. I spent 5 minutes listening to the person taking orders having a conversation about who is the youngest employee instead of taking orders. I have to admit I have a favorite here--the Reuben sub--that I always order and it is so awesome I stop here everytime I have a chance. But my experience with the other 100 or so sandwiches on the menu is limited to seeing what my friends order. They're always happy with their choices! The restaurant has a pretty basic college town atmosphere, with indoor seating and a patio that's nice in warmer weather. Some alcoholic beverages await you--premade margaritas, basic beer choices, but this is not the place for a hand-crafted cocktail or elite brews. Half-fast subs is the greatest sub shop I have every been too. Great drinks, food, service, everything. Their bread is fantastic, especially the French. Have been going there since 2015. A diverse menu that includes so many different kinds that it's unbelievable that so many are very high quality. My favorites are the Bacon Cheeseburger Hoagie (the sauce is so good), the Italian (but it's a messy one), and the Ba-donkadonk. Definitely a must visit if you're in Boulder. If you can't find a sandwich here that works for your taste buds, something is wrong with you. The menu will overwhelm you. We had a basic turkey and also a Philly cheesesteak. Both were spot on. Bread was fantastic. Prices were reasonable. We got here early so there was no line. read more

Despite the name, they definitely don't sell no half-assed subs here. FOOD: The sub menu at Half Fast Subs is enormous. To the point of almost being overwhelming. There is pretty much every kind of sub imaginable available here-- meat subs, veggies subs, hot subs, cold subs, stuffed subs, seafood subs, cheese steak subs? In addition to getting hot vs. cold, you also have the option of getting a 7" or 14" sub. + Buff Chicken ($7.09): I went with a 7" "Buff Chicken," which contained chicken tenders, authentic buffalo wing sauce, grilled onions, swiss, celery, and bleu cheese. I thoroughly enjoyed this-- yes, it was chicken tenders, but I thought it was still fine. I am generally a big fan of buffalo flavors, so this sub hit the spot for me. + Guac and Chips ($3.79): The guac was not bad, but it suffered from the eternal problem of having too many chips for not enough guac. + Tuna salad ($6.99): I was actually really impressed with the portion size for the salads. Definitely get your money's worth. AMBIANCE: Inside there's a pretty large space with plenty of tables. They also have an outside patio which was a really nice place to just sit and enjoy the weather. Apparently it is also a nice place for college girls to have really loud heart to heart conversations that end with tears and hugging, but that's another story... tl;dr: I'd definitely come back. My first experience here was awesome! Luckily, the weather kept the line short. Got our food real quick. The happy hour is amazing - 7 inch subs for less than $6. The menu is huge, and I had to get two items from the menu with this deal. I ended up getting the buffalo shrimp po bo in French bread and chicken cordon blue in white bread. Both are extremely flavorful. I thought the shrimp could be more crunchy but I thought it was still slightly better than the cordon blue. Both are definitely one of the better sandwiches I've had. I find that most sub shops are OK. Occasionally I might find a really good one or a really bad one but I don't find that I invest as much energy into caring about subs or their variations as I do about burgers. That being said, this was OK with a little plus. It was nice that the sub was a good size and nicely full of ingredients. I had the 7" Cheesesteak Club, hold the mayo. It could have used more cheese but otherwise was fresh and balanced. The staff made it quickly and were very pleasant. Actually a bargain. The thing about Half Fast, is that it is really about the big cheap college student drinks. Really. I saw more booze than subs on the tables. But if you are going to drink those pitchers, it is a good thing to have some quality protein with them. And for neighborhood takeout, these subs are just fine for a quick meal. read more

Half-fast (half-assed?) is definitely not that...which makes me wonder, why exactly you would make fun of your business in the name of the place? Funny thing is is that the name actually made me not want to go to this place the first time...but this I soon overcame. And I am glad I did. Half-fast offers an amazing sandwich selection in a convenient location on the hill, as well as solid and strong margarita specials which will get you krunked. The vegetarian selection is pretty damn good, and the sandwiches I've had have always been tasty and timely. They also have a nice outdoor seating area which is pretty sweet...sort of. Here is the deal though: I was however once siting outside on the patio eatin' when this crazy dude who was also out there started talking about being in the Wyoming national guard to everyone and how he is going to kick everyone's ass at the tables and what-not - being a real crazy douche-bag drunk who was making everyone's meal uncomfortable - so there is always that contingent to be aware of when eating outside.
