The donuts are AMAZING! The espresso, not so much. I came here on a Thursday, ordered a latte and it was perfect. I came here two days later and ordered the same latte. I could tell that the milk had been overheated and it wet bitter. They happily replaced it but then it became obvious that the shots were burnt, too. At that point, I'm not going to ask a for a third replacement. read more

Recently had a large order of doughnuts catered for a work event. The order was done on time, doughnuts were delicious (as always), and were presented with a friendly smile. I simply cannot recommend Half moon highly enough. If the goal is a doughnut and coffee or eight cases of treats. Omg. You will love these donuts. These are the best. Just the aroma will lure you in..where you will be greeted with the best customer service. Your donut will be made to order and given to you warm. Unassuming coffee shop on Broadway St. that does freshly made donuts right! We walked in looking for an iced coffee and walked out with a delicious warm donut. Their friendly staff welcomes you when you walk in and immediately asks if you want to get a donut started. We had never been, so we were confused by the question because we didn't see any on display. They informed us that they're made fresh to order! LOVELY We got a cold brew, which was just fine. and a cinnamon sugar donut. Crispy, soft, warm, and sweet. They also have plain and powdered sugar available. If you're in town, come for a sweet treat with your morning coffee! read more

Pros: 1-cute place that has great hours. This is important considering many local businesses are closed M-W. 2- Staff seemed super nice and friendly. 3- The babka looked amazing and we should have ordered that Cons: there's only one but it's a biggie. The donuts were not cooked through. Other than being warm, there was nothing that great about them. We found them to be a little too doughy and not at all worthy of the numerous five star reviews. Keep in mind we are totally spoiled because we live in NC and have Britts donuts, which are arguably the best donuts in the galaxy. But I digress. Overall, I'd give this place a try but maybe ask them to cook the donuts a bit more or have another one of their pastries, which looked delish! As for the size of the donuts, they're not huge but the ones we had were almost as big as what you'd get at Dunkin'. Not big but not nearly as tiny as I expected based on a couple of the reviews. read more

All of the great reviews are still true and spot on. And, if you ask nicely, even though it's not listed on the menu on the wall, they'll make you a macchiato that can't be beat. One final note. Got a couple of egg and cheese sandwiches on our way out of town. They took a few minutes because they really are made to order, but service was excellent. The sandwiches were fresh and delicious, and we picked up a loaf of the chocolate babka to take home. Also grabbed some frozen pierogi, which meant we didn't have to wait for the shop around the corner to open. read more

Hot and Fresh!!! Their cinnamon sugar doughnuts are made to order and if you can resist not immediately eating one, your a better person than I am. They are so light and fluffy and pair perfectly with a hot cup of fresh coffee. They take pride in their shop and the product they pass on. Visit the strand and make sure to stop by. read more

We are just traveling through in our motor home and luckily found this cool spot! It was after 2:00 in the afternoon so they we just about out of batter to make donuts but we lucked out and got 2. They make them while you wait so they couldn't be any fresher!! I love cinnamon donuts and these were perfect. We also bought cinnamon bread to try later and some roasted coffee which makes the motor home smell amazing!! You really need to check it out, you won't be disappointed. read more

After returning to Kingston for this first time this year, we started our visit with a trip to this cafe, looking for strong coffee and . . . donuts? A sure plus. Little did we know that the coffee would be aromatic and strong, but the donuts incredibly mouth watering bundles of doughy warm deliciousness covered evenly in a delicate cinnamon and sugar coating and made fresh to order - basically they could not be more fresh. And, what a difference this makes. We were greeted warmly by Ian and Kaira, who were not only the hosts with the mosts, but were bird rescuers. Birds (yes, our feathered friends) also smelled that donut deliciousness and occasionally would fly right into the cafe's lofty interior apparently looking for some of that fried gluten goodness. read more

Coffee was good here but the baked goods were not. Was excited to try the apple cider doughnut but it was extremely soggy and oily and bland. Had a slice of the chocolate babka and it was underbaked in the middle and tasted artificial and processed. Not good. read more

This is the best place for donuts - including those made fresh when ordered, but also the spectacular bombolinis filled with mascarpone cream which is as light and fluffy as whipped cream - and coffee that I have ever visited. Other offerings are also great. The place also has a great vibe, and the baker is truly an artist. read more

The owners of this establishment are remarkable people. We were eating at Mariners and my husband was entertaining our 1 year old dancing and singing. They noticed and chatted about kids for a bit. So, our family has kind of a thing for donuts and we seek them out on our travels. We can appreciate pretty ok donuts and even the occasional candy-crusted monstrosity -- but we know the difference between that and a fine, fine donut, and that is what we have here. They are truly some of the best that you're going to find anywhere, and they're fried to order. With all due respect to the naysayers, they live in a fog of ignorance. I'm not an avid donut eater, but this cafe changed my mind. My favorite was the classic plain donut. The owner JT made the donuts fresh on the spot and it was nothing like I had ever experienced. Not oily, not soggy, not too sweet. It was like eating a warm slightly crisp homemade snacking cake bread with a hole in the center. With a sip of my warm chai tea latte, it was perfect. The cinnamon sugar donut was also delicious. The bakery's chocolate babka looked so tempting but since we live close to Zabars in NYC, we passed. Now I'm wishing we tried a slice because the owner told us he lived in Russia for 10 years and learned the secret chocolate babka recipe there. read more

A wonderful little hole in the wall in Kingston, NY. Spent a weekend here with my boyfriend and we went here every. single. day to get our fill on their freshly made cinnamon covered donuts and morning coffee. I like that they also keep their menu simple so that everything they serve is on point.The owners are so nice and made great convo with us to discuss what to check out in Kingston. A place that is open 7 days a week! So many of the local stores just seem to pick and choose when they decide to open for business. I understand wanting days off but some just seem to close on made up holidays. Like "hey it's Robert Smith day so it will be grey on Wednesday and we will be closed in observance" As for Half Moon Rondout Cafe. It's fresh ready to made doughnuts!! Of course they are delicious. The coffee is definitely a step up from most places and the people that work there are friendly. They don't have a huge selection but what they have is always awesome. Cinnamon sugar is my favorite. Also did I mention they are open 7 days a week?! My fear is they will become spoiled and eventually close one day a week. Then two. Then only be open on specific days and you must know a family member and order through them 3 days in advance. But seriously. This place is a must try! read more

So when I saw one opening in Kingston almost a decade ago I just shrugged and kept going. After learning Dianne Reeder's story you realize this isn't your ordinary candy store. Yes they have over 400 kinds of candy you can buy in bulk and the store has your typical kitschy trinkets but if you look deeper it's where you find Diane's passion and empathy for others. She just wants to make your day a little easier and for you to leave happier than you came. Certainly this isn't hard when you're scooping Janes Ice cream and serving vegan homemade soft serve using Fruition chocolate and coconut milk. Even this is fairly common place in a world over run by NYC transplants expecting everything to be homemade and gluten free. Where Dianne is different, is her commitment to community. In 2005, Diane was the winner of the Microsoft/Bill Gates Start Something Amazing Award (a program honoring the unique and inspiring ways that people use Microsoft related technology to pursue their everyday passions) for her work bringing attention to food insecurity. Her passion for cooking and her desire to help others led her to find a nonprofit organization called The Queens Galley in Kingston. The work she did with the Kingston Farmers Market was instrumental in getting them to accept food stamps. Diane's mission to have people come together and break bread in dignity has now spread across the country. Her commitment even landed her a diner at the Whitehouse with President Obama. To add to her resume she graduated the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park while raising 3 kids and running the candy bar. But let's get to the point. As a tourist, I had no idea it was a well known local chocolate brand with a factory nearby, so that was a fun surprise. This is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down. When the local preschool kids come in (as a class) to visit, they make a special batch just for them! (I'm a mom of one of these preschoolers so I hear this straight from my daughter). The flavors strangely worked well together. The brown butter donut was the pièce de résistance. It was wonderfully sweet and salty, reminiscent of a butterscotch square. I felt greedy, wanting to buy a box to take home. I didn't, and now I wonder - did I make a mistake? Should I have listened to my basest desires? Might Donuts gave me something to long for.
