Hallmark is so cute! At first when my friend suggested ice cream at Hallmark, I wondered if that made the cards sticky. But instead its an adorable drive-in, a real piece of Americana. There are separate windows for food and ice cream, with all you would expect at a Southern Connecticut eatery. Burgers, lobster rolls.... shakes, cones.... They are a Coke establishment, huzzah! Most recent visit was WONDERFUL. Exceptionally friendly service, very delicious food, amazing BREAKFAST!! Had a perfectly cooked egg, hash brown, cheese, sausage bowl with avocado, yum! Even the iced coffee was great. So enjoyed having breakfast with beautiful breezy weather listening to the marsh birds sing and butterflies in the flowers. 25-30 years ago I remember the ice cream being so good here that we would buy it by the pint/quart and take it home. We were stuck in Friday afternoon traffic on I-95 so when I looked up Old Lyme ice cream places to see if this place still existed, I recognized the name and we headed there. The ice cream I used to love was like the mounds candy bar in a vanilla or coconut ice cream base. While I didn't see Mounds on the menu, they had a coconut chip ice cream so I got a scoop of that along with a chocolate almond chip. I'm not sure what brand of ice cream they use these days, but I can say for sure it is not as good as I remembered. The almond chip was literally slivers of almond and the ice cream was pretty flavorless. The coconut ice cream did have more flavor, but was still disappointing. Price was reasonable though. I think it was only about $18 for 3 people. There is a very nice area in back to sit and enjoy your food/ice cream that has a lovely view. I give it 3 stars for the ice cream but an extra star for the nice seating area and the view. It looks like they do a brisk business with the beach crowd as there was a good amount of people there mid afternoon and people were ordering more than just ice cream. I saw what looked like a lobster roll and curly fries delivered to a nearby table and it looked pretty good. The hunt continues for good Mounds flavored ice cream. read more

It was a really good lobster roll for a competitive price, especially since Lenny and Joe's is not too far south. The place itself has a somewhat quaint atmosphere, and the staff was very friendly! The low reviews are perplexing to me. Have been going here since the 80s. I know it's new ownership and that has people all worked up. And 2 years ago it was a bit disappointing, though they've improved it a lot since. The lobster roll is very good. The ice cream is well above average. This isn't supposed to be Chez Panisse! It's a fried food and ice cream drive in. They have maintained the look and feel that I remember from my youth. My kids think this place is heaven on earth, as I did as a kid. My wife is from California and doesn't know the old Hallmark, and thinks this place is perfect as is. The idea that someone posts a 2 star review because they didn't get enough napkins? The horror! I have to disagree with the glowing reviews. Back when the Ewers family owned the place, it was excellent... but in the past several years I just don't feel the quality is there anymore. Another reviewer mentioned the butter crunch ice cream - a favorite flavor of mine, too - but lately I have found the butter crunches virtually nonexistent in the ice cream. Once I literally only got 3 or less crunches in my dish! When I mentioned this to the girl behind the counter, she just shrugged and said I must have gotten my scoop from a bad pocket in the tub. Additionally the prices here have also gone up tremendously while the serving sizes have dwindled. I can't believe a recent visit cost $30 for ice cream for 5 people - no one got sundaes, they were all plain ice creams and a couple shakes. Visit Old Lyme Ice Cream Shoppe on Lyme St or the new South Lyme Scoop Shop just outside the Point o'Woods entrance on 156. Both places offer better, richer ice cream at better prices. (And bonus if you live in the area, South Lyme serves Salem Valley Farms ice cream without having to make the long drive!) read more

Garbage. Ate there after the beach & I have to say that it is only in business because people have been going there for so many decades. I got the whole belly clam roll. You can actually see the ocean from the picnic tables in back, but I think they are not aware of this seeing how the roll was more rubberie that a strip roll. We also got cheese fries. How does someone screw up cheese fries? Ask Halmark! They put what I think was... fake Velveeta on them. It was like Velveeta, which is the poor man's answer to cheeses fries, but a cheaper, more orange version of velveeta. Not worth it at all. It's run by a bunch of teenagers, who were polite, but not cooks. If you want a quick burger & fries, fine. But do not listen to the folks giving this place 5 stars. They are either reviewing based on naustalgia, or have never eaten anywhere else ever in thier life. If Burger King or McD's were right across the street, I would eat the fast-mc crap over this place. Do us all a favor and either sell Halmark to someone who cares, or go take care of your own place and stop letting a bunch of kids run a restaurant. If you were just icecream, fine. Most of them seem to be years old, or incomplete and nonsensical...so I don't understand how they haven't been filtered out already by Yelp. Perhaps some of these reviewers had bad experiences on an off day during the crazy summer months? Oh well....onto my GLOWING review of this time-honored, delicious ice cream and seafood shack located on a beautiful flat overlooking the marsh and ocean beyond! First, the ice cream here is VERY delicious. Wherever I go, I ALWAYS have to try the ice cream, and this place is definitely near the top of my list. The black raspberry (my signature flavor) is always delicious, and they have a long list of frozen yogurt flavors, which I appreciate when I want something on the lighter side of things. Their shakes and floats are old-fashioned, straw slurping goodness. On a side note, some of the negative reviews mention the Old Lyme Ice Cream Shoppe, to which I say: been there, done that, enjoyed that, and the ice cream between the two is certainly comparable. It is also my PREMIERE destination in CT for a lobster salad roll. In my opinion, it really takes more finesse to get a lobster SALAD roll right as opposed to a hot lobster roll, and Hallmark gets everything right. The buns are New England style and perfectly griddled. You get a nice portion of lobster, nicely bound together with mayonnaise, celery, and seasonings. The french fries are decent. My family has ordered various selections of their hot food (fried clam rolls and fried shrimp rolls are perennial favorites), and even my picky family thoroughly enjoys their fare. There's a little candy shop in the building next to the ordering windows that must be a delight for little munchkins -- it's very cute inside. There's an average amount of seating and places to sit on the grass, and there's plenty of parking, so if you can't find a bench, you can sit in your car and enjoy your ice cream with the AC on. The view is quite pleasant overlooking the marsh and ocean beyond. The service can sometimes be jumbled and hectic, but hey, it's the summer and the stand is manned mostly by high school and college kids. We have a place in Old Lyme and have driven past this place for years but never stopped by for food. It always looks nice and we always see people there, so that's a good sign. Well, we finally stopped in and it was great. The whole family went and we were able to try many of the menu items. The cheeseburgers, Buffalo Chicken, hot dogs, fish sandwiches were very good. The curly fries were cooked perfect and the ice cream was crazy good. Too bad we missed all those other times driving by and not stopping. I found myself in Old Lyme this weekend for a friend's bridal shower, so while I was there I decided to have my first taste of summer seafood--It took me long enough, summer is half over. I have heard and read in many places that lobster is at a record low, so you can understand my surprise when the lobster roll I ordered was almost $15! The lobster roll was just ok too, it certainly wasn't great. It was packed with meat, I will give them that, but it was a tad bit dry. I really used to love this place. My mother and I would stop here on our way home from the beach at least once a year for the past 20 or so years.
