New to ham radio, though I work on RF/plasma platforms for a living. I stopped by with a simple admin question as I'm joining a volunteer radio group that supports the government, and somehow got a side order of passive condescension... about another basic admin note I didn't even ask about, and that other reviewers have also mentioned in here. What threw me off a bit was that I'd had great interactions with other staff members before - friendly, helpful, no ego. So this moment stood out, and honestly, left me a little confused. The passion for the hobby and FCC rules is clear, and I genuinely appreciate that. But hey, kindness doesn't interfere with the signal; it only amplifies. Although I would prefer to purchase radio equipment the old fashion way face to face at a physical store I've decided to do 100% of my shopping on line due to the fact HRO is about all there is for physical storefront in my area. I've been in about a dozen times over the years and overall I think the people working there are less the friendly, apathetic and rude or condescending. Basically radio nerds that revel in demonstrating their dominant knowledge of the amateur radio hobby by asking rhetorical questions laced with technical radio jargon. It's only when you can't answer the question or answer it wrong that you ever see them smile and chuckle. The hobby of amateur radio is supposed to be inviting so the community can grow but if your first introduction was from the employees at HRO you'd likely put it down and never look back assuming it was a good ol boys club reserved for only those that have an intimate knowledge of frequencies and antennas. read more

This review is based on one experience in the store. Based on that single experience, I will be back both in-store and online. I purposely didn't announce that I'm a new ham or even what I was looking for. I wanted to have an unfiltered experience. The store is thoughtfully laid out with antennas at one end, radios at the other end, and accessories in the middle. There were a few employees in the store either on the phone helping customers or patiently waiting for the opportunity to help. I never felt pressured to buy anything or overly hounded by anyone. I just soaked it all in and finally picked up a complementary catalog and purchased the monthly CQ magazine. read more

Great inventory of everything ham radio from books to radios, antennas, power supplies, tuners, speakers, mics, etc... it's all here! Check out all the items and inventory on their website. Most importantly, their staff is fantastic. My wife and I came to the store JUST after passing our tech exams with a ton of questions and Jeff spent hours working with us. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful, listened well and gave fantastic advice. The only downside (for me) is that they dont have a store closer to me. I had purchased on line a vertical antenna but discovered that it wasn't what I needed. I decided to drive from Medford, Oregon, to Portland, to return the item in person so that I might shop for other Amateur Radio items I was hoping to be able to buy there. However, due to Covid restrictions, I was NOT allowed into their store at all, after a four hour drive there. The man in charge there was VERY unfriendly, didn't care that I took such a long drive to get there, charged me a 're-stocking' fee, but that part I DO understand. But I was sadly very disappointed in his apathy towards my long drive to find I was banned from the store. He said that I should have checked the 'website' to see that they were closed. But, I had watched a video of a woman who was inviting me to the 'new' store location instead, and there was no date on that video which I had watched. So I believed that the store was open. THE HRO store SHOULD have deleted the invitational video since they were so adamant about not letting a customer into their store. I AM personally done with HRO and will buy my gear from ANY other source than them now. read more

I ordered a new HT (Kenwood TH-D74A) which arrived shortly after ordering but was defective. I called and spoke to Bill who very helpfully sent a replacement next day air that day, before I returned the defective unit. Very happy with this! Sadly, the replacement was also defective. I called to ask if they could check the third replacement unit before they sent it out and they agreed to (Norm). I decided to drive in to HRO to return the two defective units and pick up the replacement which Norm had very kindly ensured was functional before he carried it out to me (social distancing was observed). I've been to Portland Ham Radio Outlet twice so far and enjoyed both trips. On my first visit, Pat must have given me a 1.5 hour personal tour of amateur radio equipment and concepts. He helped me find study books for the tests, helped me determine which radio might be the best fit for my objectives and budget, and explained the year end sales I could take advantage of. The following week I returned to the store having passed the technician exam. Norman assisted me with choosing my first antenna, coax, and a couple of great books on small area and covert antennas. He also spent over an hour giving me personalized help including a detailed conversation about antenna cable ceiling, roof, and wall penetration ideas with photograph examples from his own home installation. read more

It's pretty rare when a mistake earns a lifelong customer, but that's what happened. I ordered a bunch of stuff from HRO's web store and my order was shipped out of Portland. The order got a bit messed up (all my accessories were right, but they put the wrong radio in the box). I emailed HRO and they put the right HT in the mail that day with a return label for the wrong radio. I had the right radio in my hands on the business day after that. It's pretty rare that a company does that kind of thing these days (kind of a shame, because it's the right thing to do). I'll be ordering from HRO again due to how quickly and professionally they responded to their mistake. Of course, I'll be sure to double-check my packing list on the next order ;-). read more

Leon rocks! Knee deep in confusion I called HRO and Leon caught my call. While trying my first mobile install on a 2012 Prius including an antenna mount without drilling the roof, I had lost hope; the birds hushed their singing..children stopped laughing..and my soul began to collapse when I encountered the Firewall! (cue threatening soundtrack) Leon the Elmer offered solutions and talked me off the edge...not treating me like a newby Ham idiot, he was encouraging while I talked it out myself...making suggestions that would save money, time and wrist cutting. This is a national chain, the prices are average but the service is always great, although it's usually pretty crowded.
