There are three people a man rarely changes once he finds the right ones: his barber, his doctor, and his mechanic. Your barber handles how you look, your doctor handles your health, and your mechanic is responsible for a machine that, when you're traveling at highway speeds, can literally mean the difference between life and death. All three require one thing above everything else: trust. Trust does not come easily for me, which is why I felt compelled to write this review for Hamilton Tire and Car Care Center. My history with this shop actually goes back about eight years. After having brake and oil work done elsewhere on a used car, something simply didn't feel right. I brought it to Hamilton Tire, and Mike, the owner, showed me that one of the three joints securing an axle was loose. Had it failed while I was driving--particularly around a curve--the consequences could have been catastrophic. Their thorough inspection may very well have saved my life. Years later, I bought a brand-new car and became extremely loyal to the dealership for maintenance. Today that car has 231,685 miles, with one owner, and still drives remarkably well. Because of unexpected travel, I couldn't get to my dealership this time, so I returned to Hamilton Tire. I asked for a complete inspection, tires, oil change, filters, and expected that I might need brakes, rotors and shocks. Keith was exceptional. He listened carefully to how I drive--long distances, highway speeds, hot temperatures, while prioritizing durability and a quiet ride--and explained my tire options with impressive knowledge and without talking down to me. He found the right tires for my needs and my budget. A few hours later, I received a detailed vehicle inspection. What impressed me most? They told me I did NOT need brakes, rotors, or shocks. They could easily have sold me thousands of dollars of unnecessary work. They chose integrity instead. Everything was completed in under four hours. My tires were balanced, I received lifetime rotations and complimentary puncture repair with the tires, they addressed some minor under-fender issues, and even gave me a discount. That experience made me ask myself why I had stayed away for so long. I realized I had developed a bias that only a dealership could provide dealership-quality work. I was wrong. Hamilton Tire gave me the expertise and precision I expect from a dealership, but with better responsiveness, genuine friendliness, significantly better value, and--most importantly--integrity. Eight years ago, this team potentially saved my life. Today, they earned my complete trust. They say you're not supposed to change your mechanic. Well, I just changed mine--and rightfully so. I won't be returning here after the experience I had. I brought my car in at 9:30am for an engine oil light issue and didn't hear anything for two hours. When they finally called, they told me the only thing they'd done was check that my oil was full, and that I'd need to pay $170 for a full diagnostic. When I asked if there were any alternatives, because I genuinely couldn't afford that right now, Mike, the employee on the phone, laughed at me and spoke in a very condescending tone. When I picked up my car, I mentioned this to the front desk employee (who was very nice), and Mike, who was sitting right there, turned around and chuckled again while denying he had ever laughed. It was incredibly rude, dismissive, and uncomfortable. With the economy the way it is, people shouldn't be belittled for asking about cost. I don't know about their work. However, we dropped our car off for an inspection. The front desk receptionist was curt and abrasive. They wanted us to pay over $1,000 in repairs for it to pass inspection. We took the car somewhere else and the required repairs were 1/10th (less than $200) of this location's cost for our car to pass inspection. We did not know anyone at either location. My advice, go somewhere else for your automobile's inspection. read more

I stopped by to see the guys at Hamilton Tire & car care again. I walked in and observed a customer being a little rude to the front desk worker. I was really impressed on how the front desk worker (Mike) seemed to handle a long time customer who thought they could speak there mind. It was my turn to speak with Mike and he remember me from my vehicle and the review. I told him i was back for the front brake and he toke it from there. The job was completed fast and I can't be more happy with the job. The shop is currently giving a discount to military and law enforcement, so don't hesitate to let them know. If I'm not mistaken that also might apply to all first responders, but you might have to check. It feels good to have confidence in the place where you take your vehicle for repairs. DO NOT GO HERE I purchased 2 tires online and Goodyear choose this shop as my closest. Took my car in. They couldn't find the wheel lock, called me and told me it would take 3.5 hours of labor to cut them off and put studs in. I told them I would call them back -- jeep said they wouldn't charge and I could order another key. Called this shop back and they had already cut them off and damaged them and had to trash them. Additionally, they hit my rim and dented it with a hammer "not a big deal" they said. Not only did they damage my property without my permission but they lied and tried to scam me out of $450. Jay asked me to elaborate as to why I "trashed" him on Yelp, so here goes... I haven't been back here since 2015 since they were nasty to me about my headlight, which they forgot to fix. I told them I was driving to Canada in about 10 days and I needed the car checked over and the headlight fixed. I emphasized how important this trip was. We went over what would bring me to Ontario and back, and I reminded them about the headlight. The morning of our trip, we are supposed to pick up a friend in Niagara before going over the border, so we are on a strict schedule. We pull out of our parking space and notice the headlight is not fixed. I called them. A younger fellow, so it could not have been the owner, answered. I told them my name and what I asked for done. His reply was 'yeah?' to which I replied "You did not fix the headlight!" I did not yell although I was very angry. His reply was, in a much more irreverent tone "YEAH?" I brought the car in so they could fix the headlight, and they did not charge me labor but we were four hours late to Niagara. Like I said in my previous review, I did not bring the car in for much before this. They screwed up and I got the attitude. Incompetence is one thing but rudeness along with it I will not tolerate. Not only that, but my inbox was full of spam from them and I occasionally still get things from them in my email. I go to Sherwood Auto now. read more

I have been to this location several times and each time he has provided me with courteous service. I'm always greeted with a smile and professionalism...I can tell he is big on quality customer service and so am I. My services were rendered timely and efficiently. During my most recent visit I advised him that I came back to his specific location because a nice gentleman made a follow-up call after my last visit and I thought it was really thoughtful. Worst Customer Service Ever!! My mom gave this place such high reviews so when I needed to know why my check engine light was on I figured I would give this place a try. I explained to them my engine light was on, I wanted my 30,000 mile filter changes, and my headlight replaced. I knew they would need to run a diagnostic on the car and that would cost. Fine. They called and said it was some evaporator leak and there were several canisters that needed to be replaced. The cost would be $500. As much as I didn't want to pay, I said fine; fix everything. I travel a lot and depend heavily on my car. Also, I needed an emissions test and I knew my car would fail with the check engine light on. I got the car back and initially everything seemed fine. WRONG! The headlight hadn't been replaced. I called the shop and spoke with the receptionist she was very polite and said bring the car back in and they would change the bulb for free. I told her I would call before I came because I had already left town. 2 days later my check engine light came back on. This prompted me to make an appointment. Due to my schedule the appointment was nearly a month later. When I took my car in the receptionist Mike was very rude. Insinuating that I was lying about getting the bulb replaced for free and blatantly stated he was not going to honor that. Then said, "well do you still want to leave your car". I said yes, ONLY because I just paid them $500 to fix a problem that wasn't fix to begin with. Any other circumstance I would've taken my car elsewhere. I left the car and they called stating their was another canister that needed to be replaced and the cost would be $500. Immediately I said NO! They also attempted to charge me for another diagnostic because this "was a new problem". I explained why I shouldn't be charged for this second diagnostic considering the problem was never fixed the first time and questioned as to why it didn't show up on the initial test. After rudely questioning me about why it took me so long to being the car back and asking did I feel I didn't need to pay for the other work I had done he eventually took that charge off. When I got home I realized that my headlight still did not come on. So back to the shop I go a 3rd time. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place to anyone. Save your time and money and go elsewhere. read more

In fact we moved away from the area and still now make a 45 min. trip to bring our cars here because we can trust them. And that's something worth traveling for. I love coming to this location for my car service. The customer service is up to par and the office is always clean. I know everyone by name in this location because just about everyone has muscles and there are friendly. I took my car in and the Manager Mike took great care of me. I haven't had one problem with this company or the team at the Hamilton office. He even followed up with me weeks later to check on me and my car. I felt valued as a customer. I have been going to them ever since the first time I had my car worked on. I also see other people I know going to this location so that is just more confirmation that I have chosen the right shop to work on my car. They totally wasted my time today. I made an appointment last week, for today. I took off work to make my appointment, one time. When i got there, one of the people at the counter could not look up from tv long enough to assist me. The other person had no clue they took appointments. The person doing inspection was booked and couldn't get to my car. They asked me to bring it back in the morning. I said fine, I would take a lyft back. They were taken care of with a reasonable turn around time. The Toyota Camry needed four new tires and Jay Kram worked with my to get the best price available. I am the mother of the owner's youngest son (almost ten years) and no I am not writing as a woman scorned, or a woman loved. I am just writing the absolute truth. Eight years ago I purchased a used (27K) Dodge Stratus from Schaefer and Strohminger on Joppa Road, at the beginning of January. It had been a fleet vehicle but it was all I could afford. Over the years it was a good car to me, but as time progressed naturally it needed work. And more work. And more work. The entire exhaust system underneath was leaking carbon monoxide, and my mechanic (a private business owner in this industry as well) charged me 750.00 to completely re-do the piping underneath the car. My son that I just mentioned above has serious health issues, including asthma and a very serious colon and bowel problem he has had many, many treatments for along with a few other health problems. Needless to say with the car leaking carbon monoxide the repair had to be done, which I had by my then mechanic in the town where I live. (I left Baltimore in 2006). In July of 2013 as I was on my way to the children's hospital for my son's 8:00 SURGERY, I heard a terrible noise coming off of I95 and the lights lit up on the dash. Thank God I got the car into the parking lot of the hospital where it then died. In between dealing with my child's surgery, I had to run out to the parking lot several times (surgery is on the second floor), parking lot far away, to see if the tow truck had come. I called my local mechanic, as well as my insurance company USAA. I have had USAA for thirteen years, and was shocked as this was the first time I ever had a service issue. They simply did not have any tow trucks in Wilmington, DE or surrounding area. So..after my mechanic finally got me in touch with "his tow truck" guy the car was finally towed back to my town and mechanic the next morning. In the meantime, I had a friend pick me up that evening when my son was discharged, still vomiting on the way home post-op from surgery. Turns out my car (at approx 95K miles) needed a new belt for around 250.00. I was glad it was fixed! I believe it was last fall when the owner of Hamilton Tire agreed to put some new tires on my car (I believe it was two or three) because I really needed them. I was in the shop the entire day with our son, as it turned out I needed the exhaust to be completely redone on my car again! and a whole new muffler. I was very upset when the owner showed me my belt that I had fixed when the car got towed. He said when my Delaware mechanic put it on they did something and the belt spliced and was only running on two grooves, vs four. I couldn't believe my mechanic would do that, as I trusted him so much. I believe Jay must have been telling the truth because like I said, the entire exhaust had to be redone. I have not returned to my Delaware mechanic since. Paul did the job at Hamilton, and though he is not there anymore he did do an amazing job, and I never had another problem with the exhaust. The Stratus now has 150, 564 miles on it. The summer of 2014, my car started trying to overheat if I would even idle it in a drive-thru line. I brought it down per appointment, and I must say that the guy who worked on my car had SOME job;it took him all day from 10am til after closing time close to 7pm. I don't know about people smoking back there. I have been in the bays and I have never seen it, though that doesn't mean other people's reports aren't true. I know Jay would freak out if he saw it because of fire, but then again the other customer said he saw the fire sign in the lobby. I don't recall seeing it, but that is definitely odd. Anyway, the mechanic had to take apart my whole car to get down to the pipes to fix the radiator issue. He really busted his butt and test drove my car twice to make sure he fixed the leak that was just part of the whole problem. He checked my freon to make sure my air conditioner was running cold for my son's asthma. It was an exhausting day, but I have never had the car act up temperature wise again. I had my last oil change done there about a month ago. I would hope they wouldn't just top off the oil, but I have had my oil changed at the Goodyear where I live over the years and they have never indicated that. All in all, Jay does know his stuff when it comes to being a mechanic, and I know he cares a lot about that business. He bought it the same year his daughter was born so his then-wife could stay home with their two kids. I think unfortunately he has had bad luck with some of his help. He has tried to hire quality people, and some of them have been excellent. Others have been total idiots, and I have gotten into it with a few of his front desk/service people (yes they all think I am a B***). But too bad I don't tolerate ANY man to be ignorant to me. I am not a princess, and I don't get big financial breaks - I can prove that's for sure! But I was a customer service manager at one time and can't stand rudeness! read more

I went To Hamilton Tire for nearly 2 years for my routine car maintanence and will never return there again. I am very careful to to take care of my car, particularly to make sure I change my oil on time. After going to Hamilton Tire for those 2 years, I had a close friend change my oil and what he found was horrific. My oil was nearly jet black with flecks of metal accumulating in it and the oil filter was disgusting and deteriorating. Likely the entire time I had my car serviced by Hamilton Tire, my oil was never changed just topped off. Had this gone on much longer, it likely would have destoyed my engine. When I tried to address this with the company, they just denied it. Please do not take your car here. read more

I have taken my Mustang GT to the guys at Hamilton Tire two times. The first time I had all of the fluids flushed. After the job was completed, my car ran better than it ever had. The second time, I got an oil change and had the A/C serviced. Now the air is blowing cold on these hot days. The work was performed professionally and timely.
