Came here for a Valentine's Day all you can eat treat! Bring your eating pants and. Definitely make a reservation - it's a small space. Attentive and friendly staff who introduced each course. The steamed egg and miso soup are filled with umami and deeply comforting. The salmon and toro are particularly good. Our server was kind and and set good expectations up front of how our two hour block of time would go letting us know that they would give us a last call update 30 minutes before our two hour block so we could put in final orders. We ordered a lot - the only mistake in the bunch was that they forgot an identical order we had placed for my partner - but once I let the server know she was quick to fix the error. Outside of that they remembered everything else and it was brought out at a very reasonable pace. It's lovely inside, while we sat at close quarters with another couple - I am thankful that everyone around us was thoughtful and shared the collective space well without being too boisterous. $100 for an omakase with sake included is a good deal, and having an AYCE menu in case you're still hungry is incredible. The fish was fresh and prepared well--I didn't need to add soy sauce or wasabi to any of the pieces. I did think that the nigiri cuts on the ACYE menu weren't as high quality as what they served during the omakase courses, but I enjoyed the extras I ordered, especially the uni and toro hand roll. Omakase plus AYCE. The flavors and presentation were well done - make sure you get the mackerel and the scallops! If you're interested in the omakase, please note that you need to make a reservation. The restaurant is relatively small, so I imagine reservations during the weekend go quickly. Like others have noted, the restaurant is small but cozy. I booked a reservation for a celebration and the server, Nate, made it extra special. Nate is incredibly knowledgeable about sushi, fish, and was great to talk to. He took the time to listen to my and my partner's preferences and gave great recommendations. Quite frankly, photos don't do it justice. It was my first time having uni and I was amazed by how buttery and rich it could be. I don't say this lightly but this was the best sushi I've ever had. I've been eating sushi for over 20 years and this place was not "one of the best" it was THE best!!! Hamono Sushi completely blew me away. The all you can eat omakase is on another level. You sit down and they just keep bringing you incredible piece after incredible piece until you're done. Just high quality fish over and over. Do yourself a favor and pair it with the sake tasting. They bring out different types for you to try throughout the meal and it just elevates the whole experience. The fish was unreal. Fresh, clean, perfectly prepared. Every bite hit. Spanish bluefin had insane quality, the A5 wagyu over rice was ridiculous and the Uni was just pure butter. Also the service was perfect. Jamie, you're the man. One of the best hosts I've ever had. Attentive, welcoming, and made the whole experience even better. The overall vibe was high-end but relaxed. The space is small, but it feels intimate, not cramped. You can tell there are a lot of regulars, and the whole place had this great energy with people talking, laughing, and just genuinely enjoying themselves. It made the experience feel even better. I'm legit sad I don't live here because I'd be coming all the time. But from now on, every time I'm in Portland, I'm coming back here. For what it is, the value of Hamono's is superb. $100 gets you AYCE omakase, 3 glasses of sake, and dessert. Most other omakase meals would be ~15 pieces/courses and will run you $100+ and don't include any extras in the price. However, like any AYCE restaurant, you have to adjust your expectations regarding quality. If you've been to any other reputable omakase experience (in Japan and elsewhere), Hamono's fish quality is slightly lower. One of my toro pieces had a massive piece of gristle that I had to pull out myself. Overall the fish was decent, but didn't explode in flavor like I was hoping for. Unfortunately, the service and ambiance during our visit was a bit lackluster. We went for my birthday dinner (noted in our online reservation) and there was zero acknowledgment by any of the staff of us dining in for a special occasion. The service was also extremely slow, we were averaging 20-30 minutes between courses. Also, I'm not sure if this was purposeful, but the air inside was not circulating at all. Idk if their AC was broken, but I usually run cold and I was sweating throughout our meal. Overall, I would come back because of the amazing value, but with adjusted expectations. read more

Looked for a last min place for dinner around where my hotel was and was wanting sushi. This place is def on the smaller side and reservations are recommended. I opted for a sashimi plate (slices of raw fish without the rice) and a side order of salmon nigiri (the slices of fish with the rice). The pricing wasn't bad at all. But I wish there was a way to at least make one or two changes from the "chef's choice", but overall the sushi was decent. The atmosphere is very hole in the wall with pink Sakura flowers hanging from the ceiling. The restaurant sign itself it super cute. The staff is friendly, but wish they were a bit more attentive. Hole in the wall! This was really close to our hotel so we walked in and was lucky to get a seat at the sushi bar (place was full). Apparently under new management, fish is very fresh and good, some of the best from both coasts that we have had. It was a tough night I think. With outside temps near 100, the ac could not keep up, so we were really sweating! The kitchen must have been unbearable and it sadly showed. The tempura batter was... flat... lacking the bubbles and trails typical of ice cold batter draped into hot oil and was even a tiny bit chewy but still mostly crispy. My friend's roll didn't come out for so long! We were done eating before it arrived. I get it though, I've worked kitchen in heat like this and it takes a toll, leaving you less than fully sharp or worse (I've passed out in kitchen conditions not much different). I hope the building manager can do something. Until then... I'd say go when the highs are no more than the low 80's. The sake pairing our server recommended was wonderful and the birthday boy got to take home half a bottle. This server is so amazing, handling the entire service afternoon and night by himself, rattling back orders like he has an eidetic memory and always having a funny joke or two! The sushi was excellent as always and the chirashi (Hamono Don) was generous and wonderful. I would gatekeep this amazing legit sushi place, but I don't live in Portland. We didn't have high expectations for the Omakase + ayce at first but this place blew us out of the water with the amazing quality fish. We were not able to get a reservation on Tock, but we called and got a reservation for a weekday. You definitely need reservations because this place is small and during our meal, they had to turn away 2 groups of walk in's. We came the week when it was in the 90s, and their ac is not very strong. But just get more iced drinks because the food more than makes up for it. How the Omakase + ayce ($100 at the time of this review) works is you first finish the omakase portion of about 13 pieces of sushi, 1 miso soup, 1 chawanmushi, then you can order from the ayce menu. The ayce menu has most of what was served in the omakase portion. It even has toro and wagyu! The quality of the fish were high and everything was fresh. They get their fish from Japan daily and I absolutely believe them with the amazing dinner we had. Probably the best sushi deal I've had in the states. The only place I've had better sushi so far is in Japan. The most surprising thing of the meal was the akami, the lean cut of tuna. I never order it because it's just not a tasty cut. But the akami was delicious here! They explained that it's because the only use truly wild caught blue fin tuna. I definitely won't discount ordering akami from now on. Even the desserts were good! The match cheesecake and ice cream tasted like good, rich flavored matcha. We saw some tables do a la carte and ordered rolls like spider roll, crunchy roll, etc. so if that type of sushi is what you're craving, they have it too. Next time we visit portland, I'll be sure to make a reservation here as soon as we book the trip! And hopefully we'll actually get a reservation. The place is quite small and there were three of us and three seats at the bar along the back wall, so we sat there for about 10 minutes while waiting for a table. The bar area was not clean and we were not offered drinks or anything while we waited. Eventually we were seated and the table was both out of ginger and soy sauce. We did the all you can eat Omakase and it was such a fun experience! I think the value was definitely worth it. You get miso soup, 12 pieces of nigiri, and 3 sake samples. It included some incredible pieces like wagyu, king salmon, scallop, bluefin toro, uni, etc. At the end, you could stay as long as you wanted and order more pieces of nigiri and other dishes from the all you can eat menu. There were some restrictions but not really anything restrictive as you would be too full before you could even max out on anything! It was a great time to be able to try so many new nigiri and then still order all my favorite classics at the end included. Let me first start off by saying Michele our server was awesome and deserves 5 stars. The disappointing part of our dinner was due to the fact they ran out of certain ingredients for our orders. We ordered 4 blue crab handrolls and they had no blue crab. Another one of our rolls Nobu Roll also included blue crab and they substituted with imitation crab no mention of the replacement or no discount on the price. We ordered another roll which was supposed to have snow crab again got imitation crab again no mention of the change of ingredients. It was a cute little restaurant but unfortunately the sushi could have tasted much better if served as described on the menu. Decor on ceiling was so pretty. Just to respond to the owners response below. We were only informed of the blue crab handroll not being available and choose to cancel all except one that was made with imitation crab at a discount. As for the Nobu and Pioneer roll, there was no mention about substituting Ingredients prior to the rolls being made and no discount was offered. So we didn't have an opportunity to decline such discount. The response from the owner is not true. After months of stalking Hamono Sushi on Instagram, my wife and I finally went for my 37th birthday celebration. We did the Omakase and AYCE option and it was FANTASTIC! The space is cozy and the ambience was on point. They do recommend reservations, since it fills up fast. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us a great rundown of the menu and the nigiri in the omakase line-up. The price is unbeatable for what you get. For $100 + tip (per person), we got 3 glasses of sake, a tasty crab miso appetizer, 12 pieces of nigiri, and chawanmushi (a savory egg custard). We also did a round of nigiri for the AYCE portion of the night and a green tea ice cream that was the perfect way to end the meal. The fish was all flavorful and fresh! As someone who has had uni before and didn't care for it, I was surprised that the sea urchin was one of my favorite bites of the night. Other standouts were the scallop, the mackerel, and the o-toro. All in all, Hamono Sushi feels like a downtown Portland staple. The owner even came out to pour our last round of sakes! Not being in the biz I'm not sure how forgiving to be on this. The highlight was the katsu. Well prepared, good size portions. The salad was not great. I don't know what the issue was. It was really sloppy but tasted like your standard sweet creamy sesame dressing. The sushi was another story. The tamago is store bought. Not impressed. This is $2 on the sushi track. We got the eel roll. The eel again was not the freshest and it was apparent. The king salmon was ok and I ended up with some tuna belly which was good. There's a certain lack of polishing and professionalism that I sensed. There were some issues with my order that just didn't sit right with me. It was handled but still sus. Good location. I was craving sushi, so while my in-laws were watching the kids, my husband and I decided to stop in for a quick fix. One of the best rolls I've ever had is from here--the Ocean Crunch. I also tried the shrimp tempura roll, but the Ocean Crunch absolutely stole the show. I'll have to come back to Portland just to have it again! The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 is that they don't take reservations, so it's first come, first served. The establishment is quite small with limited seating inside. By reason of it takes a long time to receive your meal. Group vs. Time ~ again, if the clock is ticking the work lunch meeting is not a good option here. By the time you get your lunch you have to gobble & go. Not fun when you pay lavishly for quick fish. Parking ~ downtown off the street, lunch or dinner is tough. Service ~ not up to par principally for the price. Waiting to eat your sushi from waiting on ginger & wasabi is not a fun wait.
