This is THE ONLY veterinary who listened to me and MADE SURE THEY FIT MY BB GIRL (small tea cup yorkie) IN, in a TIMELY MANNER! my dog is roughly 4.4lbs and was mounted by an off leash dog here at a local park in Amherst. this dog was MUCH bigger than mine, being about 30lbs. and unfortunately he was VERY QUICK, and it happened SO QUICKLY. I love Dr. Katz and this practice so much. They are reasonably priced, they treat the animals so well and really helped us out in an emergency when we first moved here. The thing is Dr. Katz loves dogs so much that when one of my dogs was ill and he couldn't figure it out he kept her overnight with him in his house which I think is above the clinic. So he calls to update us on her status and tells my husband she's sitting next to him and fine. The cost of that 2 night stay which was really a slumber party was limited to test costs, med costs and nothing else. I was stunned. They are a just a gem in all ways you can think of. I waited for over an hour. Incredibly rude staff, especially the woman at the front desk. I understand that the Dr. Katz has some medical stuff going on, but he clearly shouldn't be practicing any more. He could barely hold on to my dog and only could by gripping her way too hard. His thumb nail is clearly infected. He repeated himself and asked me the same questions over and over, so clearly can't remember what is happening in the moment. When my dog was getting her rabies shot, he missed and just squirted it onto the floor and didn't notice. Then, when I told him, he gave it to her again and clearly hurt her. I used to be a vet tech and I know that it should be given subcutaneously and he clearly fully stuck her. He recommended way over medicating for no reason and then wanted to charge me a fortune for it. After reaching out to some Western Mass pet owner communities, I've talked to others who have had bad experiences here and the stories are shocking. One stand out was a friend of mine who was waiting for over 2 hours and when Dr. Katz came in, he was dripping excrement out of his pants, having clearing soiled himself. Not joking. Another woman who had her pet put down here after a difficult cancer battle and when Dr. Katz administered the baceuthenaisia, he either missed or didn't administer enough because the animal was struggling in pain for 30 minutes before someone came in and gave him more. The staff seemed to mock her for caring about her pet's death and brushed her off as a nuisance. I recommend everyone who has had bad experiences here to let it be known. My girlfriend was home visiting her family with our new 7 month old puppy. She was worried because our dog kept sneezing and had slight green mucus. She had called Dr. Katz to set up an appointment for our dog, and he was willing to get her in right away that same day. My girlfriend decided to wait a few days until we could go together. Dr. Katz called back after she cancelled to offer simple at home care for our puppy, and even called later that day to check in. Dr. Katz cares about animals, not just for the money in the work but because he loves the work he does. While we didn't end up seeing him this day, I would bring our dog in any day to be seen by him. read more

Dr. Katz cleaned my dogs teeth (sounds simple but NO OTHER VET WOULD) when no one else would and saved his life. Every other vet my family took my dog Toto to would not clean my dogs teeth until the bled us of every penny we had, but then Dr. Katz saved the day! Toto's mouth/teeth had become infected and we didn't know until it was almost too late, in addition to that he also has a hernia that is pretty benign. No vet would clean/pull his teeth because of the hernia, told us we had to fix that before his teeth even though his mouth infection was turning septic. Proven over and over again. I wouldn't trust my animals' care to any other vet staff - continued kudos to Dr. Michael Katz for his expertise and dedication to the health and wellbeing of all creatures. I most recently had to put my aging and very ill cat to sleep, it was heart wrenching. They allowed me safe entrance into a private room in the hospital where I could spend my last minutes with her before Michael gently and caringly eased her into her final sleep. The hospital was buzzing with cars outside and phones ringing but they didn't rush me even afterward - until I was ready to wrap her in a blanket and say goodbye. So I came here because my cat had a leaky eye and mucousy sneezes and coughing fits. She's had these symptoms since I found her (at that time) a year previous with eye infections and a respiratory infection which I had treated. Nothing had changed in her life, but the symptoms definitely worsened with weather changes into winter, and I finally had money to take her to the vet. So I get there, and it REEKS of animal pee inside the office. Nobody was at the front desk. About 10 minutes go by and I get up and start yelling "HELLO?" until finally a woman hobbles out, very stern-faced, totally unsympathetic and insensitive to my time constraints and their commitment to my appointment. They set me up in a room 30 minutes after my arrival and appointment time, and it took about another 10-15 to finally be seen by the guy, Katz. I was the only person in there when I arrived. He is very old and had a severely infected or damaged fingernail. Whenever a health practitioner has visible health concerns they do not acknowledge or address, it makes me wonder about their credibility right away. He comes in, examines my cat, and then declares to me that I need to change her food, and that's what the problem is. That I need to feed her raw chicken with tums and her symptoms will disappear. He had prepared folders with packets of information on changing cats diets, and that's the only thing I received aside from the eye medication. He then tells me her leaky eye is conjunctivitis (even though there was no colored discharge and no redness or swelling and her eye has been leaky since she was 4 weeks old and had already been treated for eye infections). Upon showing me how to apply the medication, he poked my cat in the eye with the tube and missed applying the medication to my cats eye, and the medicine dropped onto the floor, and he still thought he properly applied it. I've applied medicine to my cat's eyes before. During this whole process, I was questioning his assumptions and asking him to validate them for me with some information. He gave me weird war stories and VERY CRUDELY compared cat bodily functions to political statements shitting on George HW Bush. I mean, I'm with the guy on those statements, but what does that have to do with explaining to me why my cat sneezing mucous has to do with the food she's eating? Does he even know anything about cats? Mind you, I feed my cats varying flavors of Natural Balance (http://www.chewy.com/cat/natural-balance-original-ultra-whole/dp/29472) and have consistently their entire lives. And while there is total credibility to feeding cats raw diets, the problems I went there for were not addressed at all and Katz did not give me the information I needed. On the off chance I may have been wrong, I used the eye medication as I was supposed to. It didn't do anything; almost a year later, she still has a leaky eye. I think my cat might just have a leaky eye. My cats didn't want to eat raw chicken. I tried. They love their food. Natural Balance is a high-rated food that I've looked into extensively. It's better than Iams, which every vet seems to readily suggest. So I kept that the way it was. The visit cost me $145 and did absolutely nothing but waste my time and money. The woman at the front desk was weird and rude. 10/10 do not recommend. South Amherst Vet clinic seemed pretty great when I took my friend's cats there. read more

I called to get my dog dental surgery that my usual vet was booked way out for --and was initially very happy that they were able to schedule me, I was clear that my dog hadn't previously been seen there and was told it wouldn't be a problem. I waited a week until the appointment and brought in my dog on time, filled out the paperwork and they took possession of my dog. Halfway on my return home I received a call saying they could not do the surgery on a dog they hadn't previously seen and that she would need a pre examination, and both that appointment and the subsequent surgery couldn't be done that day, I was to come back immediately and pick up my dog that was in pain and now stressed, and be left with no recourse. Incompetence of the highest order, I welcome the vet to contact me and work to address the situation and I will happily update this review accordingly to reflect their follow through, until that time one star. read more

I brought my service dog here to be spayed. They were able to get me in within the week, whereas other Amherst vets had tried to schedule me as far as a month out. I was very nervous dropping off my dog, and the secretary was incredibly sweet and comforting and completely assuaged any fears I had. She clearly loved animals, and my dog took to her immediately. They kept my dog from 9am to 2pm the next day. When I picked her up they clearly explained the medication schedule and the stitches. My dog has recovered perfectly. Pool, DVM, PhDIntroduction Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD) is a developmental disease in larger breed dogs (commonly, the Great Dane, Alaskan Malamute, Weimaraner and Irish Setter). This disease usually begins between the ages of 3 to 4 months of age. Signs can vary in intensity, and several dogs from one litter may be affected, although at different times. The heritable predisposition of the disease has not yet been documented, and the Irish Setter Health Committee is supporting research into possible DNA HOD markers. The information in this paper is based upon current published literature on HOD, treating 10 cases personally and from telephone consultations /e-mail in 104 cases of Irish Setter HOD over a 5 to 6 year period. Clinical Signs of HOD Dogs affected with HOD generally present with lameness or reluctance to walk, and malaise. Early in the disease, the metaphyseal regions of the long bones, i.e. the area between the diaphysis or mid-shaft of long bones, and the physes or growth plates will be tender to digital palpation, slightly swollen and warm when touched by the inside of the examiner's wrist. The disease is usually bilateral, most prominently affecting the distal radial/ulnar metaphysis (above the wrist joints), although the metaphyses of all long bones may be affected less dramatically. More adversely affected individuals are systemically ill, depressed, febrile often reaching 104 - 105.8 F and anorectic commonly refusing to eat. Dogs with HOD have episodic symptoms that if not treated will generally experience progressive clinical signs including persistent high fever, anorexia, rapid weight loss and metaphyseal pain that accompanies progressive radiographic signs of epiphysitis and parosteal metaphyseal cuff formation. A few of the chronically affected individuals that survive the acute episode will develop radius curvus, and a smaller number of dogs will die. Pathophysiological Changes This is a systemic disease in which the initial lesion occurs in the osteogenic capillary bed of metaphyses responsible for invading and replacing the expanding cartilage model of growth plates involved in endochondral ossification, a developmental mechanism responsible for growth in length of endochondral bones. Lesions of HOD are more prominent in the osteochondral junctions of the most rapidly growing growth plates, e.g. the distal ulna/radius and distal tibia/fibula, although histological lesions are commonly present in metaphyseal physes of less rapidly growing ends of long bones, metacarpal/metatarsal bones, phalanges and growth plates in ribs and vertebral bodies The initial lesion is necrosis of the capillary loops that invade the cartilage model of the metaphyseal physis. In a normal pup this is a site where the perivascular mesenchyme comes in contact with the bare surface of empty chondrocyte lacunae, differentiates into osteoblasts that apply an initial thin layer of bone tissue to form trabecular systems of primary metaphyseal spongiosa. In the earliest microscopic lesions of HOD where the invading capillary bed and its perivascular envelop of osteogenic precursor cells have died, the germinative layers of the unaffected growth plate continue to produce cartilage tissue that sends columns of chondrocytes having terminal empty chondrocyte lacuna with mineralized walls into the necrotic tissue at the osteochondral junction. The resulting calcified cartilage lattice void of a bone-covered surface becomes elongated and replaces the primary metaphyseal spongiosa. In the absence of its bony component, the elongated calcified lattice cannot sustain loading from weight bearing and undergoes microfracture and compaction. The band-like zone of the necrotic capillary bed and osteogenic cells undergoes dystrophic calcification. This band also contains a dense neutrophilic exudate that includes macrophages and osteoclasts. The latter two cell types attempt to remove this mineralized debris. Resolution of this initial lesion is recognized radiographically as a zone of increased radiodensity that gradually undergoes a loss of radiodensity following gradual removal of the calcified debris by macrophages and osteoclasts. Onset of healing of the lesion is marked by reestablishment of the osteogenic capillary bed and production of primary spongiosa (Trostel, Pool and McLaughlin). While the initial necrotic, inflammatory and early healing response is occurring within affected bones at the metaphyseal osteochondral junction, other important but less dramatic changes are taking place in the soft tissues of the metaphysis in the edematous subcutis and fibrous tissue superficial to the periosteum in the so-called parosteal (outside of the periosteum) soft tissues. Dr Katz is a great vet! We've had him for regular care for both our cats for a few years now. He gave us lots of useful info on cat care in general when we had our first visit, and sent us home with print outs to back up what he recommended. He also took one of our cats home with him overnight when she was really ill so he could keep an eye on her. The office is not bright and shiny and new if that's important to you, but if you're looking for a dedicated & highly competent vet, Dr Katz is a great choice (plus you get to tell everyone that your vet's name is Dr. Katz). read more

Would NOT recommend for small animals. Had an emergency with my guinea pig and was told I could bring him here, but now I wish I'd gone somewhere else. Dr. Katz pulled him out of the carrier so unnecessarily aggressively and forcefully that my boy screamed a high-pitched noise I've never heard him make. This is a pig that is super friendly and really easy to pick up. And at this moment his face was also bleeding (which is why I brought him to the vet in the first place). I told the vet that he didn't need to handle him in such a way and he ignored me. I will not go there again. I don't know how he is with dogs/cats but that was absolutely inappropriate handling of such a sweet (and injured!) guinea pig. read more
