This is a hidden gem in PDX. You need to park on the road, they don't allow you to park on the small parking area that they have. We were told it's reserved for the VIP guests :( We had their hot pot. All of us in our family never liked hot pots, we prefer Korean bbq which was what we were expecting. Its been a long time since I was looking for an opportunity to visit this restaurant. I had read and heard from my friends that this is a must visit place. My friends and us had a reservation last week for dinner. This was the last week of their seasonal option of Korean Hot Pot. The place is very eclectic and nicely decorated. It's a fine dining but in a comfortable and informal way. The service is incredible and the staff is very friendly and courteous. The food is excellent and worth paying the price. They serve unlimited bancyan and it is really really good. The quality of meat in hotpot was unbelievable. The bone broth is very very tasty and once the veggies and meat added to it, then it took it to a different level. I have tried many Hot Pot places but this one is my number one choice. The meat literally melts and gets cooked in less than 40 seconds in the broth. The vegetables were very fresh and amazing. We four of us were stuffed like a turkey with the amount of food they served. the dessert was to die for. They must have changed their menu now for spring season, but I would recommend to keep this place inind for Hot Pot in fall this year. It's such a vibe here!! I could definitely see myself coming back here the next time I'm in town. We didn't try the Gimbap Party menu here, so can't really speak to that, but it looked awesome. It was great seeing so many tables enjoying that. I love Gimbap and it's cool they made it into such an interactive experience here. The actual set up of the restaurant is one of the best I've ever come across. It truly feels like you're at someone's house, and love how big and spacious the patio area is. This is truly the perfect place for a nice dinner in the summer. We got a few non-alcoholic drinks as well as desserts like shaved ice and another specialty rice cake dessert. OMG. Been on my Portland bucket list for many many years but the reservations are hard to find and it's a bit spendy. Finally, my birthday came around and my husband surprised me with this ain't no party like a gimbap party menu and it did not disappoint. First of all, got the table in the corner on the elevated platform with the best breezes and the best view. Secondly, the menu was the ain't no party like a gimbap party which featured make your own gimbap ingredients (rice, veggies, grilled pork and beef). Pro tip, they will bring unlimited Refills on the banchan, so take advantage of it as the main portions are on the smaller size. The grilled pork and steak were amazing and they did bring out a second dish of it. All the food was HIGH quality, perfectly seasoned and delicious. Third, one star off for the plating that was done in one plate for every two people and the high price. Although I do expect a lot for $65/person I was disappointed that you had to share everything. Especially when it can get awkward if you're just friends as the intimate sharing can get awkward in US culture. I was very upset to get only a small shaved ice dessert for every two people. They did not disappoint. This was my first time coming to Han Oak and might I say... I was impressed. The vibe is so comforting. From the moment I walked in it felt like I was just hanging out in my friend's backyard. We sat at the chefs counter (which did feel a little more like the bar) but everyone was super friendly knowledgeable. My partner and I both had a non alcoholic drink and they were both delicious! All the small starter plates were so flavorful and tasted so fresh! This was my first time having gimbap and I will say I am hooked. Everything was amazing and it was so fun being able to be creative and build your own adventure. And it may not look like it but there was plenty of food for two people, but they will give you more of anything if you'd like. Dessert was so yummy as well. I've had Han Oak bookmarked for a while once I saw them featured on Ugly Delicious but was bummed when they were close for a bit. I was so happy once I saw they were taking reservations again and even converted their menu to be hot pot. I was a little sad I couldn't try their other menu options but I am a hot pot gal so I was more than pleased they were offering this! Since they are only open for a couple days a week we booked a month in advance for a group of 4. Day of the reservation we came early and staff was quick to seat us and get everything set up as we were waiting. When they send reservation reminders they do say give extra time to come since parking is tough in the area and they don't have a lot for people to park. For $65/pp they give you an eclectic mix of meats, sauces, and banchan. It's not your typical hot pot so if you're expecting brisket, pork belly, and rice, then this place isn't it. I had reservations if I would be full after the meal since portion sizes aren't the largest but honestly I felt stuffed after! I was surprised to see corned beef on the menu as it isn't something usually seen but was a nice twist. It might not have been my favorite cut of the night but all the meats were quality. The dumplings also had a tasty filling and the broth had a nice depth. They had wonderful sauces to pair as well and recommend you mix it into your personal bowl/broth to season. They end with some dessert of grilled mochi and it wasn't my favorite tbh as it was a little too charred for my preferences. As for service, since space is limited they get everything set up in the beginning but they are pretty hands off throughout the meal. I do wish they came a little more often to refill our pot with broth since we got to the end and it was super salty. They did do cleanup but I thought that timing between the main meal & dessert was longer than I expected. This has been a restaurant on my list for a while and for Valentine's Day I knew this had to be the spot. It was a chilly night but the warm heaters make you feel like you're instantly stepping into your friend's house. We were greeted and sat quickly and the service here is spectacular. They are very attentive and work as an amazing team together. Started off with their Lip pucker (tart and sweet) and the I'm calling my lawyer (similar to an old fashion and the sesame seed garnished cherry worked well with the drink). We got to enjoy their gimbap party tasting menu. The individual dishes were well executed and thoughtfully selected and perfectly cooked. The banchan was tasty my favorites were the potatoes, tofu and beets. The experience of making your perfect bites makes for a fun date night or time with friends. We paired a lot of their picked sides with the deliciously season and savory bulgogi and pork shoulder. We had 2 rounds of everything which left us so stuffed. By the time dessert came it was refreshing to cleanse our palettes with the cooling snow ice and the miso banana w/orange whipped cream was really joyous. Kudos to the imaginative creation of this menu and consistently doing new things. I can see how it was in the running for the James beard award. You can tell and feel when the food is cooked with passion. Side note: I will say that I did read an article about trying to ensure the BOH/FOH is paid a living wage. I think when you have this level of caliber and are charging a fixed menu price that people do deserve to be making more than minimum wage. I'd be willing to pay $5 more per person if it helps out the great employees we interacted with. read more

What a culinary experience! It was an Asian fusion experience with excellent and attentive staff. It combined Korean, Japanese, and Chinese flavors and ingredients to create a unique culinary adventure. After having seconds of banchan and entrees, we were full and satisfied. Without seconds, it wasn't enough. I like this concept because it's less likely to waste food, and the food will be hot when you eat it. The only thing I would recommend is that each guest gets their own dessert. We had to share one dessert. Otherwise, perfection and will recommend to all my friends and colleagues. Disclaimer: it's not authentic Korean, but Korean themed with Chinese and Japanese influence. The make your own gimbap is something Japanese have been doing for decades. The style is called Temaki. They also use Miso and Chinese Chili Crisp Oil in their dishes. Still an original and delicous experience, so still 5 stars. read more

My boss had asked me if I would join him for Korean barbecue, while we were at our conference. I agreed to go. I'm not that much of a fan of Korean barbecue but I love the side dishes/banchan. The evening of our reservation he told me that he had also invited his best friend's son and his roommate, who were freshman at the local university. I was happy to have the young men join us. Finding this location wasn't quite easy. Our driver dropped us off at a parking lot. My boss saw the sign with an arrow pointing right but we went around to the front of the building. Not finding the entrance, we went back to the parking lot and a small sign that indicated the door. It was easy to miss. Walking inside you're in a covered outdoor area with a section that goes into an indoor dining space. There is a small grassy area with some kids toys on it. Trees and shrubbery are all around. The young men had arrived before we had. On the table there was a drink menu, a menu with add-ons, and a menu that explained the different courses that you're offered. It wasn't the type of Korean barbecue that I was expecting where you cook your own food. I was, however, intrigued by the variety of dishes that are served on this fixed menu. A waitress came to take our drink orders and asked us if we wanted any add-ons. We didn't do any add-ons. I asked for an iced tea. They didn't have ready but they would make some fresh for me. I asked for the green tea. It was pretty weak. As each course arrived the wait staff would explain what it was and gave recommendations on how to eat it. Everything is served family style. You are given a small plate, but the plate was later taken away, so you eat from the communal vessels. I'm not a germaphobe, but I can see how some might be taken aback by that. The first four dishes that we were brought were banchan. The first dish was a bowl of kimchi made from cabbage and some pickled daikon radish. I thought both were excellent. The second dish was a salad of pear and mustard greens. I thought that they worked well together. The sweetness with the bitterness of the greens was a nice contrast. There was a small dish of this spiced eggplant which I really enjoyed. Sadly this is one of the few dishes that we couldn't get a refill of. Everything else on the menu was refillable for the most part. The last of the four dishes was a version of what they called potato salad that had roasted potatoes covered with a dressing that was like potato salad dressing. I am convinced that they use some Japanese mayonnaise because it was much richer than the American type mayonnaise that we have here. I didn't care for this one but everyone else at the table really enjoyed it The next dish that was brought out was a small bowl of broth that had very thin slices of beef at the bottom. To the side there were some cut-up vegetables that included cabbage and corn. We were recommended to use our chopsticks to roll the beef up with some of the vegetables inside, like a taquito. The beef was incredibly tender. The beef and broth both had a subtle flavor. I just found it a little messy to eat. The main course came next. A small tray with little indentations was filled with different kinds of vegetables including leeks, cucumber, sliced egg omelet, pickled radish, mushrooms shredded carrot, and sheets of rice paper. We were also brought small bowls of steamed rice that had some rice vinegar in it and nori sheets. A small dish of a marinated tuna was brought out. I found that to be delicious, but again this is one of those things that we couldn't get more of. There was a stone bowl that had roasted pork loin that was marinated in what the waiter described as "Korean A1" sauce. He suggested that we use the nori sheets as an analog for a tortilla and make small tacos with different ingredients. We were also brought out a little sauce tray that had some mustard, a soy sauce based dip, and a creamy type dip. I'm not sure what the creamy dip was, but it had a nice flavor. Each of us made our little customized tacos. Everything was delicious. We kept eating and eating. We ended up asking for a little bit more of the vegetables, but our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We weren't able to finish all of our food The last course was a very light dessert of shaved ice. It has some some red beans at the bottom and condensed milk over top with some sliced strawberries. I didn't even try it, as I was so full. We were asked if we wanted to take any of the food home but the boys were headed back on the bus, so they didn't want to carry it back. It was about $68 per person for the dinner. None of us left hungry. It was an adventure and most everything was absolutely delicious. The service was excellent period. The outdoor setting was a little strange. The bathroom had disco lights in it which was a little bit disconcerting. We had an early reservation but the restaurant soon filled. read more

I've been looking forward to trying this spot out for the longest time, and finally got to try it recently. Walking into the restaurant, it can be a bit confusing as the doors are a bit rugged and there's no windows from the outside. However, the inside is beautiful and has a big open center, that brings plenty of natural lighting into the restaurant. There's lots of greenery that makes it feel almost as if you're dining outside--without the freezing cold weather and rain. Service here was attentive the whole time. In addition to the set menu, my boyfriend and I ordered additional platters of seafood, veggies, and a serving of their deep-fried soft shell crab. When the banchan first came out, I thought they were all fairly good but I wasn't a fan of the kimchi (there wasn't really much flavor)--which was a bit of a disappointment for a Korean spot. However, it was redeemed by the corned beef soo yuk, which was one of my favorite plates the whole meal. The beef was soft and the broth was SO rich that I was ecstatic when we finished with the beef and the waitress poured the remaining broth into a bowl for us. The main course was delicious, and I loved the meats with the veggies. The process of creating your own kimbap made the dining experience more fun. However, I DON'T recommend the seafood or veggie platter. They don't offer much to the meal and the seasoning wasn't very good. The seafood platter just felt as if there was only gochujang put ontop and it wasn't marinated, while the veggies were too salty as they were drenched in soy sauce. Everything offered in the main course paired well and these didn't compliment the rest of the meal. The only thing I do recommend is the soft-shell crab as it was SOSO good. And, the dessert that finished of the meal was light and not too sweet. Overall, it was good but I really regret ordering the two additional platters. read more

I have to admit...for all the hype, this place underperformed. I'm used to paying higher than usual prices for Korean food with no qualms. I fully understand that this isn't 'Korean food, so much as Korean with a PNW inspiration' but still, it didn't really check any boxes for me. Even the Kimchee was bland...clearly made for a western palate and not 'mom's recipe :)' ...chef might need to check whoever is making probably the most important dish in the place. Portions were ridiculously small, some of the flavors were extremely ordinary (compared to the big flavor you get in Korean cuisine), and the little grilled bites of meat aside, nothing 'Wowed' me. The meat...was...FANTASTIC! You're paying for the environment (5 stars), you're paying for the 'experience that once was Han Oak' even though nightly mass seatings in several restaurants have removed the rarity of such a meal (I was able to get a reservation the day of), and apparently so too goes the spontaneous crowd karaoke. The quality of the ingredients is still there, but sometimes the quality doesn't always make the meal. The waitresses were fantastic and knowledgeable. The cocktails were ok. Overall, we ended up with an underwhelming experience and we were still hungry. I doubt I'll ever be back to any of their properties...but at least I had the experience. read more

This review is for everyone that works here, but especially Brandon and Sean! We were unable to sit and enjoy our food due to a medical emergency, but Brandon quickly dropped what he was doing to administer basic life support. The rest of the staff were very attentive and kept checking in with us as well. The food we were able to try before this happened was wonderful, but I am blown away by the care we received during and even after our situation! They even tried to comp us for our meal even though we packed it to-go, saying we weren't able to enjoy the full dine-in experience - absolutely did not have to do that because we already received wonderful care and attention! Luckily, they were willing to charge our card for a dollar so we could leave a fat tip. I do want to note, we stopped by for their build your own kimbap menu - or as they call it, their "gimbap party" - which is a per person prix fix menu. I think they rotate their menu because a friend of ours said they came in for hotpot. We came here on April 20, 2024 Saturday The building is small they use a lot of plywood and PVC plastic for covering and making more space for tables. so I don't know why this would be a $$$$ dollar sign when it's not even upscale with luxury furniture. It's all causal and they played hip hop music!!! I don't get there theme it's giving me causal vibes but prices are wanting to be down town prices and decor is casual bar in your neighborhood! Just like any Korean restaurants they give you small little dishes with all these pickled/fermented veggies on small plates. I liked none of the small plates. Kimchee was not good there wasn't much flavor who ever made it didn't seasoned it very well. Potatoes wasn't great it was just bland just like the daikon. We order the $65 dollar per person gimbap all you can party off the menu whatever it's called. They were all mostly more veggies on small plates and the meats came in small portions in a hot skillet. We got pork and beef and you would roll it up on a seaweed with your veggies and rice and make a roll out of it. That was good but it wasn't like "bomb" "fire" it was the only good thing everything else is just cold and with pickled veggies! It's like going to a Korean bbq restaurants but with very much LESS options that's all it is! This is over priced and it's not even in downtown portland! For small portions it should be under $45 dollars for these meals. Like I said they are giving you pickled veggies. Veggies are cheap! They pickled the veggies and just serve it up it's nothing fancy! I didn't gain a good experience with the food here it was way to basic and small. The flavors was not there it was bland and the pickled veggies were not very well seasoned. For $200 my money is best at K town bbq grill off of Foster in 82nd in SE Portland! You get your moneys worth. I would not go back due to the food it's just over priced and wasn't tasty! I'd like to be able to give Han Oak a higher score than this, but at 2/5 I think I'm being generous. To be clear, assigning a single score intended to rate Food, Service, Ambiance, Value, Creativity, etc. is impossible. For me, the score is meant to say "out of 5 points, I'd suggest someone done here with '2' of them. Honestly, though, I personally won't return. Service was generally very good, but for the cost of dining here, servers should be offering more ingredients more often and bringing them more frequently. Servers were friendly and attentive otherwise. Food Quality is very good. Quantity, especially meats and noodles, should be greater. Hotpot stock was tasty, but not spicy whatsoever. No rice was served at all. Veggie tray was good with several nice mushroom types. The Seafood tray (extra $$) was sparse for the cost. Value is simply not there. I've been to a number of very good Korean restaurants and Hotpot restaurants. The cost at Han Oak was comparable to better restaurants which offered MUCH better cuts of meat, including Wagyu or prime grade cuts. Ambiance. Hmm. I don't mind the "back alley start-up" feel, but for that cost I shouldn't have to sit on plastic school chairs or a 15" tall backless wooden bench. Of the 5-6 hotpot restaurants I've tried in Portland, this was my least favorite. If you include Tigard/Beaverton this would be my least favorite of 10+ hotpot restaurants I've tried. As a Korean immigrant, this is one of the best Korean meals I've had, either in Korea or the US. This is not a traditional Korean restaurant. It takes the foundational flavors and dishes and infuses seasonality and creativity, all the while nourishing your body with an assortment of vegetables, pickled foods, 15 hour simmered beef broth, and protein goodness. Since I was traveling for work, I sat alone, beaming with happiness. Unsure if it was because I was exuding joy, but the service by every staff member was outstanding. The meats were high quality, impressive fresh local produce and other hot pot offerings like noodles, dumplings tofu and rice cakes. The broth was a little bland even when adding the 4 sauce options. While everything cooked rather quickly, I just wasn't in the mood to cook my own dinner. Once they drop off the hot pot fillings, you're pretty much on your own. Came here because I was missing the comforts of Asian food while away from home, but still wanting to have a fine dining experience. Han Oak caught my eye with its modern vibe and stunning, airy space, and I was lucky to grab a last minute reservation for their Gimbap Party. I agree a lot with what Lizzie F. said in their review -- service and ambiance were impeccable, but the food definitely left a bit to be desired before it can be considered truly solid Korean food. I found the food a bit too much in the sweet and sour directions without enough heat, salt, or earthiness to balance out the palate. The main course was very good though, and still made for excellent leftovers the next day. Banchan: 2/5. The kimchi lacked flavor and was too sour, not the best sign for a Korean restaurant. The cucumber wasn't marinated at all and tasted only of cucumber. The tofu, in spite of all the chili oil, was tart instead of spicy. The potato pancakes were very good, but they resembled hash browns more than they did Korean pancakes. The perilla tamari was an excellent touch. Cold noodles: 3/5. I subbed out my corned beef stew due to not eating beef, and I received this vegetarian cold noodle dish instead. I was initially thrilled because I love Korean cold noodles, but these were just a little too one-note in its tang for me, especially when served right after the banchan that had such similar flavors. Gimbap party: 4.5/5. They carried through with the mains! The veggies were great and generously portioned, and the rice paper a nice textural touch. The pork was pretty good, but the albacore was my favorite (I didn't have the beef). I loved the interactive aspect to it, building your own mini hand rolls, it reminds me of bossam. I did want more of a kick of some sort, either in some fresh herbs, raw garlic (I really was thinking of bossam), or heat. The pork and albacore were both dressed in aioli, but it was mostly creamy instead of spicy, and the veggies added more of the same slightly sweet + tangy flavors as before. Bingsoo: 1/5. I was really disappointed that the bingsoo is not, in fact, bingsoo at all, because I was looking forward to it so much. It's just yogurt with berries, with the slightest dusting of shaved ice on top. It was a bit too tart for my liking, especially since the entire meal delivered a lot of tart flavors, and I was perhaps looking for a contrast. Overall a good place to enjoy with friends, and quality ingredients that clearly live up to the price point. Good food, great friends = an amazing time. We came here for a friend's birthday and enjoyed this fantastic set menu. The weather was terrific as we sat outside and enjoyed our meal. The service was good as we were constantly looked after and asked if we needed anything. The intimate seating arrangements made it possible to chat with friends who sat a bit further away. The exterior decors were decent and made the atmosphere enjoyable. The best was the bing soo, which was smooth and had one of the best texture. Han Oak was actually one of the reasons my girlfriend and I moved to Portland. Not really, but sorta. We were watching an episode of Eater's Guide to the World and it was on the pacific northwest. Han Oak was one of the restaurants it covered, and it looked so cool. I love the philosophy of life over hustle. The food ended up just not being anything special. In fact, it was quite bland. And at $65/person, that's pretty disappointing. My girlfriend and I went for our anniversary and got the hotpot. We'd never done hotpot before so it's possible that I just don't know what I'm talking about and somehow "did it wrong", but anyway, here's what our experience was. First of all, the broth was bland. I think it was kind of intended to be though. When the waitress first poured it she said it won't be very salty at first but it'll get moreso as we add food to it and as it reduces down. But that just never happened for us. And it had plenty of time to reduce down; it took over an hour to get our food. Personally I played around with adding the dipping sauces to the broth. That improved things somewhat. Not too much though. I just didn't really know what I was doing and it seems unwise to expect customers to figure out how to make it taste good that way. From there, the food itself was also pretty bland. I mean, it makes sense. You get various meats, veggies and noddles that you cook briefly in the broth and then eat. But the meats, veggies and noodles are all basically raw ingredients. They're not marinated or anything and the meats are extremely thinly sliced. Then you cook them briefly in a bland broth. So yeah, it makes sense that everything would be bland. I did try dipping the food into the dipping sauces but somehow that didn't really work out. The food would be dripping with broth which diluted the blob of dipping sauce on my plate. I was also slightly disappointed by the atmosphere. In the interviews you hear about how their home and work are the same space and there might be kids riding around on tricycles and stuff. That sounded fun but I got a lot more of a trendy, hipster type of vibe than a down to earth homey one. The portion sizes were kinda small too. The desert was good though. It was this grilled mochi thing that had a really great chewiness and nice char on the exterior. The warmth of the mochi was contrasted really nicely by some cold sort of soft serve frozen yogurt. I appreciated that it actually had some tartness and tasted like yogurt instead of ice cream. And then some nice little cubes of apple. Still though, at the end of the day the diner itself was bland while also being very expensive. I'm not sure who that actually appeals to. read more

Wow, what an experience. I went here with the old ball and chain and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was a feast. The food was fantastic and absolutely something we've been thinking about for the last two weeks. The staff were very friendly and it felt like we weren't eating in a Portland suburb. I had heard Han Oak was amazing so we had to try it out. To be honest I think it's over priced for what it is. We went when they were doing hot pot. The meat was good and the selection of veggies was just okay. I was drinking wine with dinner and had even asked the server for recommendations to go with the food. I had two different glasses and I wasn't impressed with either glass. They do have heaters but I would recommend still dressing a little warm if going in the winter months. We visited Han Oak from Seattle to celebrate my father in laws birthday. I was able to get a reservation online (Resy) no problem. Note that a credit card was needed, and no cancellations or changes are allowed on the day. Based on this I had very high expectations of the restaurant! We arrived about 20 minutes early and they were able to seat us. We were seated in the courtyard area and the overall ambience was great: shaded, next to grass, string lights, no bugs, and with a comfortable breeze. Note that the table had a long bench, so 2 out of 4 people in our party had to sit through the whole dinner without something to lean on. Not a big deal for a young group, but something to consider for a more mature/elderly crowd. Our server was super friendly. I was impressed by her knowledge of the drinks menu including the Korean soju and Makgeouli sections. Despite the great service and atmosphere, I am giving 4 stars only because the food was a B+ overall. Presentation was ok and the whole menu was creative, but flavors lacked Korean authenticity and overall quality of cooking was just so so. Specifically: - Banchan - radish was a bit too raw, kimchi was fresh but lacked depth of flavor; potato crisps were crispy and delicious: cold tofu was also delicious (but tasted more sichuanese to me than korean); cucumbers just meh. -Corned beef+cabbage in 15 hr bone broth - I didn't really appreciate this "neither hot nor cold" dish. The broth is served in room temperature (which is a bit odd as most Asian bone broth is meant to be hot). And then throw in some cold slices of cabbage in there with thin slices of flavored beef. I thought the flavors were fine but the overall texture and temperature of the dish just didn't really work for me - Gimbap - I liked all of the vegetables and thought the seasoning was well done. I loved the strong sesame flavor in the spinach (as they should have). Also liked that the pickled mushrooms weren't too sour. However I was a bit disappointed in the meats that came in the sizzling stone bowl. I was expecting some epic Kbbq style/marinated galbi, but I thought the beef slices were a bit tough and marinated in an awkward blend of kbbq and western spices. The pork was the better one - it was drenched in gochujang though for flavor. The sesame crusted tuna that came on the side was also drenched in some aioli. Overall, I would say the meats were average - not the quality I would expect for "fine dining". - Dessert - I love bing su so was delighted by this. Unfortunately the ice quickly melted into the yoghurt and it became quite slushy. I wonder if there's a way they can make the yoghurt a frozen yoghurt/ice creamy consistency to hold up the bing su? Overall, I would give this place 5 stars for service, ambience, and creativity. This was a fun experience, and overall pretty affordable at $65 per person (for tasting menu). I could see how this could be a fun weekend night for a group of young friends who aren't picky eaters or food critics. But if you are more focused on food quality rather than just a "fun experience" I wouldn't come here. read more

Finally secured a reservation! Honestly, I'm quite perplexed by the negative reviews. The servers take the time to explain the menu, whether you're familiar with hot pot or not. It was emphasized numerous times that the broth is intentionally bland so that you can build the flavor - patience is key here folx! Let that broth simmer, slowly adding in the different food elements to build that complexity. By the end of our meal, my broth tasted completely different than my partners, both unique to our preferences and both savory and complex. I was so hyped-up to try the Korean Hot Pot set menu & it exceeded my expectations! I love hot pot in general but as a Korean, I've always felt it'd be better w/ kimchi on the side lol so when my sis told me about this place, I was all in! THE FOOD - Banchan: I'm pretty picky about my kimchi but both the cabbage & kkakdugi were good. I liked that they were different from each other too. The cabbage had the nice sour bite that I prefer & the radish was fresher kimchi so less bite & crunchy. The beats dish was citrusy & I liked the yogurt. A nice, fresh way to begin our meal & eat throughout. - Hot Pot: All the ingredients were fresh & there was a good variety of items. I love rice cake and there were multiple kinds. My fav meats were the ribeye & short rib. The corned beef was a little odd for hot pot but I wasn't mad at it either & enjoyed the quirkiness of it. Make sure to utilize the sauces w/ the small bowl they give you so that you can mix up the flavors each time. I dunno why other Yelp reviewers complained about the broth. I thought the bone broth base was both light & tasty (like it should be for hot pot) & the variety of Korean sauces were available to give ur tastebuds a punch. - Juk: Ok our eyes were way bigger than our stomachs & my sis and I ordered the add-on before we finished eating the hot pot. We were intrigued by the dungesness crab but it was a big mistake. We were so full that we could only eat a few spoonfuls of the juk. It also tasted really fishy & was just ok. I think if it was a slightly sweeter juk, that would of been more enjoyable after the hot pot. -Dessert: AMAZING! And thank goodness we ended w/ this instead of the juk. I loved the crispy outside of the grilled mochi & it combined w/ the tangy fro-yo & spiced pears was the perfect end to our meal. THE AMBIANCE/SERVICE - Server was very nice. He did ask us if we'd done hot pot before so didn't bore us with beginner details. I still appreciated him describing all the ingredients tho so I could fully appreciate them. He's also the one that made the juk at our table. It was fun to watch while he made friendly banter. - We had our hot pot broth refilled multiple times so don't be shy in asking for that. - It always surprises me to see the nondescript outside & then walk into such a trendy spot. I enjoyed the lively atmosphere & plants & exposed brick. Overall, loved this dinner! I've had hot pot many times but never with Korean flavors & with such high quality ingredients. What a memorable meal! The experience is definitely one to savor with a group. The banchan dishes were each a delight - and the main show of the hot pot was a true highlight. Everyone in our group declared the meal one of the best - and also a lot of fun. We made a game of the final custard dessert: whoever could make the plate look cleanest without licking it won. I would have like to give this Han Oak a better score...But there quite a bit to improve upon. First the good. Food was delicious, place was clean and the decore on mark. Mix drinks next level. Now for the bad better know where you are going before get there entrance is hidden an practically no signs. We were told several times we could ask for more then when we did it was like it was huge inconvenience. To be fair we are 4 large guys.It felt like we received better service from wait staff that were working other areas. Then deserts come and we were asked to share 2 very small . This is a super fun place for group dinners. We came for a birthday dinner as a party of 11. The service was great- they were pretty quick, patient and fun; the drinks were creative and delish; and the food was perfect as it was prefixed it made ordering so much easier. My only hang us is the limited menus. As someone who has a shellfish/ fish allergy and isn't into beef all that much I would have loved to see a few more veggie options available. read more
