This is probably the best Japanese food we've found in Utah (and we've lived in Japan for several years).It is run by a Japanese family and it's not a large restaurant which is probably why they have good quality control. Prices are reasonable. We went around 6pm on A Friday evening and they only had counter seats left but we enjoyed watching the cooks. The food was fresh and well prepared. I live 3 miles from this amazing place and just found it by accident. Everything we tried was delicious. The Gyoza (dumplings for dummies) were tasty, then on to beef curry over rice. It was a little spicy but very good. We had the Red Dragon roll and Playboy Roll. The best part of the night was the Mochi ice cream. We had the mango and strawberry. This place is a little off the beaten path and you may miss it if you don't know what you're looking for. Very small, the seating area can fit maybe 20 people, and it would be packed at that. This place is very busy, which is a testament to the delicious food! I went on Ramen day, Saturday starting at 11am they take orders until they run out, or 1:30pm, whichever comes sooner. It is a relatively small place so not the best for large groups. They will still accommodate but don't expect to sit on the same table. Everything is serve yourself so that was interesting. Average I set a pretty high bar. I have a co-worker that's husband is Japanese and owns the koyo in SL. Which is a 5 star. Hanamara had great food sushui was well below average. Miso soup was good . Teriyaki salmon good. shrimp tempura appetizer came up short . Was suppose to have 4 shrimp and only got 3. I can't fault the place. It is a small, intimate place. The sort of place that would be perfect for a first date. Obviously family owned and run. Not someplace for the guys who go to sushi places to see who can pound the most amount of rolls. The place is small, like I said, with about 5 tables inside and another couple outside. The food. We found this place many years ago when we were in town and we have been going back since then. The place is top notch from the taste of the food to its decoration. If you want authentic Japanese food, this place is it. It seems like a family owned place where the parents cook and child serves (just a metaphor, but it is true the couple who owns the place cook each meal). There is a very pretty and cute Japanese garden outside the restaurant too. We have tried many things on their menu and I cannot pick a favorite because everything is great. Parking can be challenging because the place is often full and you will need to reverse a seat ahead of time. A very authentic feeling Japanese restaurant with excellent food to back it up. I would recommend either coming in early or making a reservation, as there isn't much seating and can get busy really fast. Orders are self taken and then handed over to the chef at the counter. I tried both the sushi and curry and was not disappointed. Very good flavor and mouth feel for both dishes. Highly recommend! I have only been their on Saturday for their ramen which is only there for a few hours and limited seating. Also often they had wierd hours for a while. I am not sure what is going on during Covid since I have become a recluse but the noodles was worth it. Fan, just wish they had a bit more noodles and more seating. read more

Delicious. We ordered gyoza, fried calamari, the Vegas roll, and chicken katsu curry. All dishes were prepared quickly and came out hot and fresh. The flavors were great, and the spice of the curry was right on. The only disappointment? No ramen. I should have researched this more thoroughly, but they only do ramen on Saturdays for lunch. We moved from Japan, and so far, this is one of the best authentic Japanese restaurants here in Wasatch Front. With the Japanese-favorite, contemporary but warm interior and exterior make you feel it is a special day for you all. This is not a big place but very comfortable size to sit with your close friends and enjoy your time. My daughter and I had Nabe-yaki Udon and Katsu curry, both of them are very popular in Japan, and they are great! I don't like Udon noodle 'cooked too long' or Katsu (pork cutlets) with soften-outside, and I believe those small things make a lot difference for the taste. They know Japanese standard, they know how to cook veggies for the best taste. I have not tried Sushi yet, but I am sure they do excellent job. My opinion for Hanamaru: this is one of the 'Japanese-recommended Japanese' restaurants here in Utah! read more

In the city of Ogden, this place is a gem. Very, very authentic Japanese cuisine, and excellent service. It's a very modest establishment, seats maybe 20 at most, with a minimalist take on decoration and atmosphere. I usually have gone here for lunch on "ramen Saturdays" where they serve a limited amount of ramen from 11-2, Tonkatsu Miso ramen is the best I have had here in Utah, a large bowl served with piping hot noodles, beef, and a soft boiled egg. Awesome little Japanese restaurant just off of Washington Boulevard. I had take out from here. The seating is little tight and was full when I came by early evening to pick up my dinner. Mostly either Asian couples or at least one spouse who was Asian in the couple were the patrons. Always a good sign at Japanese restaurant. And my favorite indicator of all, the proprietors barely speak English. This always makes me think the food will be authentic. I had sushi. A spider roll and a spicy tuna roll. Both were well-prepared, generous in the fish, fresh, and tasty. Will definitely come back. My only problem will be trying not to have the sushi and exploring other items on the menu as the sushi was so good. I think it is way better than Tona. read more

LOCATION Located off Riverdale, on 37th, right behind Macey. I have cut through the Macey's parking lot on 2 occasions to get to 37th. PRICE For the quality, authenticity, care and service, the food is priced fair. A sushi roll (comes with 8 pieces) will run you $8. Kaiseki style dinners will run you $18. Appetizers are fairly priced - 6 piece gyoza for $4.50. The noodle dishes will run you around $10 based on what you get. I usually spend $20 - 30 here for dinner just for myself. FOOD Those used to generic sushi rolls may be surprised by the smaller sized sushi rolls that is often found in izakaya restaurants - they are meant to be that way. The sushi rolls are catered towards American tastes but they are still delicious. I particularly enjoy their chicken katsu kaiseki dinner. The katsu sauce that accompanies the chicken is the best I've had - coming from Hawaii, I've had a lot. I also tried the zarusoba (not in soup); it came with tempura and priced at $8.50 for dinner, it was filling and delicious. Very good tempura. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but so far, everything I have tried is delicious. OVERALL This is one of the BEST Japanese restaurants I have been to in terms of quality, atmosphere, service, and price in Hawaii and Utah. read more

We came in for the Ramen Saturday and it did not disappoint! They only have ramen on Saturday's from 11am-2pm and I believe they do sometimes run out. We were there at about 11:30 and waited maybe 5 minutes, and then three tables finished at the same time and we could sit. Other tables seemed to wait maybe 10 minutes to be seated. We ordered the tonkotsu ramen (one with the niko miso and one regular). The noodles were delicious, the pork was tender and had great flavor, and the broth was really silky. The niko miso was a little spicy and really tasty. They only do noodle dishes and a few appetizers on Saturday's for lunch, so if you want to try their other items (also very good) be sure and go back for dinner! read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Ogden I get cravings for their food. It is comfort food for sure and I love the atmosphere and the consistency of their food. The interior and parking lot of this place is very small and not particularly easy to maneuver in (the place itself is even a little bit tucked away and hidden), so my guess is that it fills up fast. I was told that the noodles here are particularly excellent, but if I'm going to a Japanese restaurant and it serves sushi, odds are pretty good I'm not getting past that. We wound up hitting the calamari appetizer, which was unique and excellent. I wasn't in love with the creamier sauce but the sweetened soy glaze went excellently with the soy sauce and the calamari. I had a couple of sushi rolls and my friend went with the noodles. The sushi was excellent, maybe not on the level of Kyoto or Ginza, but still very, very good. The green tea was also quite good. Service was, however, not so very. While our server was pleasant, she was also very brief and as another reviewer has noted, not so good about coming back to check in. I would have had at least another roll had she come over and possibly dessert, but regrettably, she kept distance to the extent that we ran out of time and couldn't order more by the time she came round again. This struck me more as inexperience, but it cost the restaurant easily $15 in extra stuff. For a place this small, maximizing dollars per table should be a bit more paramount, I'd think and really, this kind of lapse is what separates the 4 star places from the 5s. The good part is that there is very little wrong aside from that and and a great deal right. I would anticipate that particular issue getting better with time. It certainly wouldn't (and won't) dissuade me from eating there again. read more

Being from California, I have often been extremely disappointed with the sushi selection that I have encountered here in Utah. The restaurant has a very quaint feel. You feel like you step into a little part of Japan. It is very small, and I was grateful that I had decided to make a reservation because we would have waited a very long time if I hadn't. It is completely run by an older Japanese couple, so service is a little slower. The sushi was fabulous! It was bursting with flavor and completely took us by surprise. The fish was fresh, and everything is prepared with pride. The presentation, flavor, and overall eating experience was completely invigorating! We also ordered the assorted sashimi. The restaurant was a little difficult to find, but thanks to the great tips from other Yelpers, we were able to make our way to the absolutely best Japanese food in the area (after twice around the block). The restaurant is located behind the grocery store on a side street with little parking. Great food, friendly staff! Service was excellent for a very crowded restaurant. One waitress to all the tables and our glasses were never empty. The food was absolutely wonderful. I had the Udon Dinner and my husband had the Salmon bento box. I have to say this is the best Japanese food we have had since we've been in Utah. The tempura shrimp with the Udon soup were absolutely wonderful.
