I am 6 months pregnant and got a couples massage with my husband. Nicholas was my massage therapist and did an AMAZING job. I wasn't sure what to expect getting a prenatal massage from a male but was pleasantly surprise by how kind, professional and knowledgeable Nicholas was. I got a massage and a facial on a very busy weekend and I was unfortunately a little late to my first appointment the Lovely Mis Cara gave me a courtesy call and was so kind to move my appointment so I wouldn't lose any of my time, I was graciously greeted by two beautiful smiling faces and was then offered some very refreshing watermelon berry water, the massage given by Mr Rex was truly one of the best experience I have ever had he was kind and listened to all my needs by the end of the massage I felt so good I could cry! After my massage I waited a minute or two for my facial appointment to being and when I tell you Melvi is an angel she is truly that not only was my skin glowing but so was my soul after being touched by such kind human beings. I had originally had Come in because I was having a hard time with the way i look after having a baby as it tends to happen. Don't do the monthly membership here. It's just not worth the money. We had to cancel our membership to save some cash while things were tight, and they didn't allow me to keep the 2 credits that were owed to my account. Mind you this was $120 worth of Paid for massages. Not very good customer service in my opinion. Probably not in yours either. Just stay away. Also, their front desk is always giving different information each time you talk to someone. So you never really know what's actually happening with your account. Several times over the course of our membership here we had questions and problems with the way they handled billing. Again, just not worth the hassle. I will say that Assar and Felix were both very good at giving therapeutic massage. Nothing bad to say there. Just poor customer service on the front end. read more

Great place to get a massage. I've taken my mother and father here and they love it. They have several massage therapist which will accommodate your different style of massage you like. My fiancé and I have the monthly membership and yes great. The only thing I don't like is, that if you want to give someone one of your monthly passes they charge you ten dollars. If you want to be in the couples room they charge you another ten dollars even if you have the monthly pass. I think that for what you pay, those two fees shouldn't exist. read more

To the front receptionists and Felix, the masseuse, THANK YOU. First, I was in a lot of pain in my neck, back and shoulders from the usual computer-related 'sit in the chair till the end of the day stress'. I called them when I couldn't take it anymore and at first they said they were booked. The young lady told me to wait one moment and she went to check with the manager. Sure enough, she was able to fit me into a slot within the next 90 minutes. I was so grateful. Upon arriving, Hand & Stone has a very clean, well-maintained lobby with my favorite products - Dermologica and Archipelago Botanicals. I knew that it was a good sign. The greeting was warm, professional and personable. Every consideration was made including offering me a beverage and being on time with my appointment. I appreciated that because I had another appointment just after this one. One of the young ladies gave me tips on skin care which I greatly appreciated. FELIX, the masseuse, is a SUPERSTAR. Through the 'pain' of him working out the knots, I knew it would be a good thing after it was said and done. He gives medical massages, not the 'drive-by' massages with a lot of lotions and oils and he read my chart noting my allergic reactions to common ingredients in some spa lotions. I felt immediate relief and it continued to improve after I left. I even fell asleep in my hairstylist's chair after realizing just how relaxed I was. A day later, the improvement is still apparent. He even taught me exercises to do and emphasized the importance of stretching. Now, I'll adhere to what I thought were annoying messages on my computer telling me to take a stretch break. Came here for a couple's massage with a friend, and it definitely put us both to sleep. The massage was so relaxing! My masseuse Julia did a great job! I was so sad when they told us our hour was up :( The massage was so good, I am actually considering in creating a membership! They were also really accommodating when my friend was running late. We still got our full hour and they didn't give us a hard time about it. Only deducting a star because of the scheduling conflicts. I first received a phone call that my 2pm massage will actually be pushed back to 2:30pm. Then I received another phone call that my masseuse called off and they won't be able to find a backup for our couple's massage. They were both fantastic in their work and a pleasure to get to know. I tend to chat a lot during these kinds of treatments, and they were both really beautiful people to connect with. They were top notch in their services, wonderful to speak with, and both gave me suggestions for how to work with my skin and body post-session. My first time experience with this place wasn't pleasant. I booked the massage appointments for myself and my daughter with the introductory offers for $89.95 pp for an hour session as advertised. Later, I found out that it was only 50 minutes. We came to our appointments 15 minutes earlier. We filled out all the necessary forms before our appointment time. My daughter was greeted by her therapist on time. But my therapist came in late more than 10 minute. She started our session after 5-6 minutes assessment. Her message skill wasn't good, but acceptable. However, I expected that she would make up her time due to her lateness. But she didn't. My sessions was supposed to start at 9:30am, but she didn't start until around 9:45am, and ended at 10:22am. The receptionist still charged me the full price, even though she knew that my therapist was late. The one star I gave is for my daughter's therapist. Her first time massage experience was wonderful but she did tell me there were loud noises from outside that she could hear. I was disappointed in their services. I told her about the physical issues I've been experiencing, and that I like deep tissue, and I was not disappointed. I was once a Massage Envy fan. Until they got popular and scheduling an appointment monthly that works with my schedule and theirs became a part time job. And then quitting them was like a divorce. It was messy and took forever. I'm glad to say that this place does not require that commitment. You can quit whenever you want. However, planning out a month ahead for me is still too much work, so I opt out of this awesome deal. The service itself was not amazing but it's enough to satisfy for a $50 massage (first time). The massage therapist was attentive and pretty skilled. I will return to take advantage of their hours and prices. Even though they say spa, it's still pretty basic. Front desk area and rooms in the back. No showers, couches, etc. The front desk staff seemed a bit bored and disinterested. I'm not used to that. Plenty of parking, so that is a real plus. I had kind of a mixed experience with this place. It's not bad by any means, but here's some considerations if you book here: First off, the receptionist (Jessica) that booked me, was able to get me a same-day appointment, which was really great because my upper back was killing me. But after I told her I wanted a swedish massage and reserved the booking with a credit card, we hung up and I suddenly realized there was a complete lack of details and clarity with the booking: * I was never asked about my preference of a female or male therapist * I was never asked the duration of the massage * In fact, I wasn't asked anything So I called back and asked if I was getting a male or female therapist? The response "Oh we only have a female therapist available." That was fine with me. I had to leave soon to make the appointment, so I ended the call at that. On arrival I was given a form to fill out, which included "options". One of them being "add 30 mins to a massage". So, you don't specify a 60, 90, 120 min massage here, you just get a 60 min massage + an extra 30 mins. I also opted for the scalp massage upgrade. After I fill out the form, Jessica proceeds to tell me that the therapist doesn't have enough time to fulfill a 90 min massage. So I look at her and say "I wish you would've told me that on the phone". No real apology or attempt was made to correct the issue. I have to say, I was REALLY annoyed by this. Which is a horrible introduction to a new business and just prior to getting a massage. So far warning: Customer service is not a priority here. Though, I have to say, upon visiting the facility, it is very clean and is exactly like the pictures on Yelp. Rooms are quiet. My massage was good. I have no complaints about the quality of massage I received. There was plenty of attention to detail, the scalp massage was worked into the massage itself, and the massage ended exactly on time. The therapist was quiet and worked on my problem areas as requested. But then there was one other oddity at the end of my massage: I was told "here is a towel to wipe of an excess lotion". I just realized right then, with a head full of scalp conditioner, there are no showers! That's right, this isn't a full service spa. I guess you get what you pay for. I felt the introductory pricing was adequate. I'm not sure I would return to this place and pay full price. It's slightly below my expectations, especially with the customer service issues and all. I almost feel bad for the therapist as she did a good job. I also don't remember my therapists name as it was never mentioned and I wasn't asked to rebook with her. That's a shame as well. read more

This was my first time getting a facial. The facial itself felt great! However my experience was ruined my the money hungry employees. I didn't look at the price of the facial before getting it. I just really wanted one and this place seemed like a great choice for my first time. The esthetician examined my skin and told me she would be customizing my facial and doing some skin brightening and microdermabrasion. She then said this would be $80. I very clearly asked "for the entire facial?" ... the esthetician gave a vague answer insinuating that $80 was the final price, and basically tricked me into the $80 add on service. When I got to the counter to pay, I explained to the "manager " that I was confused on the pricing. She was nice enough to waive the one of the service fees which removed $50 from my total. She then asked me if I wanted to leave a tip for the esthetician and I clearly said "$20". I would have tipped more if I weren't tricked into paying for add on services. She emailed my receipt and I headed home. I reviewed my receipt at home and saw she tipped the esthetician $40 after I said $20! I was so upset, I returned all of my products I bought from them and cancelled my membership. Even though this is a spa, I have to keep in mind it's a business and they find sneaky ways to make extra money. I had no problem paying $170 for a facial, but I don't like being tricked. My husband booked a appointment for me to get a deep tissue massage for my birthday. The massage therapist Maxine took me back, and when we started talking she sounded really irritated. She asked me what I wanted to do, and I informed her I was having a deep tissue massage. Conversation went downhill from there. She really started to talk down to me after that. She said I had to choose what part of my body I wanted massaged. I didn't realize that, I apologized and told her I didn't book my own appointment. Then she said she was getting towels and will be right back. She leaves and comes back with towels and is wondering why I'm not undressed and ready. Very confusing! She did not tell me to undress, or not undress. Was I supposed to undress since she was only going to massage neck and shoulders? I was practically in tears. I had to leave because I feel you have to trust the person that you are going to undress for and have them massage you. The front desk person offered to have me see another therapist, but it would be a 35 or 40 minute massage (but I would have to pay for an hour) Forget this place! read more

I've been a member of hand and Stone for a long time now and at multiple locations. I'll admit that I've had a few disappointments, but the Alameda location has hit gold with a few of their employees. First, Felix is an athlete's dream come true. He's well educated and knows what he's doing when it comes to the different muscle groups. I'm a heavy lifter and rower. I came in to see Felix feeling like a rubber band stretched around a tree trunk. I left feeling like a brand new person and ready for my next athletic competition. Plus, he is great with true hard pressure, which is hard to find effectively. I'll be back to see him extremely often. Best massage I've ever had. Next, Megan is an amazing esthetician. I literally can't say enough about how great she is at her job. She knows exactly what she's doing from start to finish, which, let's be honest, is important when you're working on someone's face. My skin hasn't looked better than it does since Megan started working her magic. I bought some of the clarity RX products from the salon which are really awesome too. It's nice to feel like someone truly enjoys and cares about what they do as much as it seems that Megan does. Plus, she's just fun to chat with. Two thumbs up for both of these awesome professionals. We went ahead and rescheduled for the next morning. Prior to the appointment they called us and cancelled again saying that their employee had called out, again. They offered for us to reschedule again but we were unable to fill the time slot due to prior obligations. No compensation for our time or for inconveniencing us was made. No gift card, apology, or coupon. Nothing. So we called back and asked to speak to the manager. We have yet to hear back. It's hard to believe they don't have a backup system or anyone on-call that can fill these appointments should someone call out.
