I have a 2019 VW Tiguan, unbeknownst to me, when your battery dies, that it, it's  dead.  So, since I live in Placerville, my husband walked over to Hangtown Foreign Auto, he spoke with the owner, and got a verbal quote and a business card (make sure you get a written quote, even though the owner says he is busy). I on the other hand, called Niello VW in Sac area.  The quote over the phone was $10.00 less than Hangtown.  Hangtown quoted $320.00 battery, and additional $90.00 to put it in and calibrate it. We had the car towed to Hangtown, and figured pick up next day or when they could get to it. (battery was in stock).  So, later that day, at 6:15pm, I get a call from the owner, said looks like the battery and we can install and have ready tomorrow.  I then asked how much, He said $540.00, I was in shock and asked why so much when he quoted a little over 400.00 all said and done.  He said he was busy that morning, didn't remember what he quoted, and didn't check price of battery, gave us a ballpark figure.  I gave him the breakdown he gave us earlier,  and then he said if I didn't like the price, he would leave the keys in the car and I could come and get it and take down to Niello and save myself the $10.00. He then went on to chastise me for "well, the last time you were in here was over 2 years ago".. I was speechless. (Not that it is any of his business, but we hadn't taken the car to anyone except Niello because of 2 recalls and some interior problems that only the VW dealership could handle, except an oil change.) I told him I was only asking because it was quite a bit higher, he said he could give me a cheaper battery and knock down the price by "$50.00.   I told him I didn't want a cheaper battery, but I was only asking.  He told me "well, I can just eat the difference, "I'll just take it in the shorts" and went on a rant about how he was busy, and didn't know the price when he quoted, and on and on about his business.  He said he had worked all day and was busy, I told him I worked at the hospital and was still at work, and I was busy also. When I tried to speak with him more, he just kept interrupting and giving me excuses.  I told him we would be down tomorrow (the next day) and we would pay the price.  I am over 70 years old, owned 2 businesses in Placerville, and I have never, ever in my life had anyone speak to me like that and chastise me like I am one of his kids.  Do not take you business to this man. Visiting from Bay Area,only in town for 4 days. My 99 Saab had radiator leak. Called in morning, got me in same day . Not only did he diagnose problem (rotting hose, loose connection) he was able to fix it. Only charged for labor which was very reasonable. Very nice husband and wife business, lifesavers for me. Been going here with a couple cars (Mini & X5)...spent thousands in service. Thought was my 'go to' place for these 2 cars as owners have been friendly and helpful.......until Mini brought in and was charged $250 more for a part that not needed (replaceable fuel filter inside canister) - anyway, moved on from there (no real apology). Today bring in X5 and barely a smile or greet from either owner (not sure what I did) guess enough customers now......to top off asked for front tires to be balanced as there a steering wheel shim at 70- would think wouldn't charge $29 from mess up above, but whatever. I drove down road and way worse so took back & they state will just put back as was (remove weights added).....he comes in and give snarky comment that has to throw away $20 in weights. Then the wife hands me back the initial charge of the balance with sour look. Guess I'm looking for a new shop...... read more

Phil and Team are great. My Infinity was acting weird like loss of power coming up 50 on the drive home after work. I called and Phil said to drop it off and they would look at it the next day. Turns out my alternator was on the way out and needed a new one. Phil got one ordered and replaced and all was good. Next we had an issue with our Prius that was diagnosed to be a potential recall issue. Rather than doing repairs and charging us just to make money, Phil advised us of the situation and directed us to the dealership. I have nothing but good things to say about these guys. I took my VW to the dealership because I thought an issue I was having with a bad smell in my A/C was covered under warranty. Of course they told me it wasn't, but quoted me $200 to fix it. They also told me definitively that the problem was NOT my cabin filter, which would have been a much cheaper fix. I didn't want to pay dealership premiums, so I brought my car into Hangtown and explained everything, including that the dealer had told me the cabin filter was fine and that the smell was from something else. When I came to pick my car up, they had my old cabin filter pulled out of my car for me to look at. It was disgusting....no way in hell it was "fine" when the dealership guys looked at it the day before. They straight up lied to me to get more money. Good thing I decided to keep my car close to home for repairs and bring it to Phil. Less than $50 later and my problem was fixed...no pricey disinfectant, just a filter and some elbow grease. Based on my great experience, I decided to bring my car in for my 40K service, which is a big one for VW's and it was way cheaper than the dealership again, and my car was done in less than 8 hours. So relieved to have Hangtown down the street. read more

I took my vw in there for a clutch and they quoted me 1 price and then when it was done it was way more. And when i picked it up i made it 3 blocks before it broke so it got towed back and i had to pay for that then like 1 more week they finally said we cant fix it they wanted to only give me half my money back but after arguing with them i got refunded 80 percent of my money and he told me if any of the parts were bad to let them know and they would refund me well the pressure plate was bad and i took it back to them and 3 months later i have still not been paid back for it horrible shop stay away..... read more

When I had my VW CC, I took it to Hangtown for all of its services. They've always been a much better price than the dealership and they took such great care of my car. Unfortunately, I had to sell my VW. I bought a Buick and was worried I would have to find another trusted mechanic to maintain it. Luckily, Hangtown said they would still service it, even though it's not a foreign car. I took my Buick in today, and as always, the staff was amazeballs! They serviced my Buick, and didn't charge me for things that my car didn't need It's so hard to find a trusted mechanic, and I've had a horrible time in the past. I have to differ with the other reviews. While everything was done, done well, and as explained and expected, I was not happy with the price - or the nickel and diming. I don't expect to be charged for windshield washer fluid. While that is something small on its face, it sends a big message. When I brought the car into the shop, the repair and estimate were provided very promptly. I was looking at $400-$500 worth of services. As the work progressed, I received a call stating the major problem was found, and the cost would be over $500. I said go ahead. When I picked the car up, the total bill was $600. My opinion is I should have received a better estimate or more accurate estimate. I will try a local competitor next time as I like to keep my money local. I did leave the shop feeling taken advantage of. But the car is running just fine. read more

don't be fooled by the dealer, there are very few things that have to be done at the dealer, the dealer has a bunch of young trainee technicians that are working on your car(had a few bad experiences), when you come here they only have master mechanics, and they are not paid "Flat Rate" like at the dealer so there is no reason for cutting corners, you get personalized service and they have all the good stuff for German cars. this place is a small hidden gem in Placerville. why drive down the hill when you have this here? people should come up the hill! read more

These guys are LIARS and will RIP YOU OFF. TL;DR: Collision damage occurred in their lot. They left damage on my bumper and gave me an old malfunctioning headlight as a replacement. Then told me "Shit happens" and "you should be happy your car is driveable". May 30 Thursday: First call to Hangtown Foreign Car Service. Arranged to have car towed there overnight and drop keys in box. May 31 Friday: Got in contact with HFCS to remove wheel locks and selected tires to be put on car. Was told to expect my car back by Tuesday June 4th at the latest. June 3 Monday: Called HFCS 3 times to add oil change to the work order. Roughly 9am, 11am, and 3pm. June 4 Tuesday: Called again to add oil change. Left message. June 5 Wednesday: At 230pm, receive call from HFCS, was told there had been an accident and somebody backed into my car. They don't know who it was and my car is already in the shop next door being repaired. Spoke on the topic of the chipping paint on my bumper. Flat out lied and told me there was no damage to bumper. Car would be ready Friday June 7th. June 11 Tuesday: After not hearing from HFCS I call at 2:19pm. I was greeted with a "Hey I was about to call you". Was told they put the wrong headlight in my car but it is drivable. They are currently searching for the correct headlight. I told them this is getting beyond ridiculous and I would be there first thing in the morning to get my car. June 12 Wednesday: Pick up car first thing in the morning. After paying bill that included a free oil change I take a look at my car before I get in to drive away. There is black paint on my bumper, the plastic around the fog light is cracked and pieces are missing. When I brought it up to Bruce I was told they didn't need to do any work on the bumper because the paint is already chipping. I was told I could buff the rest of the damage out myself... I was told there was nothing more they could do at this time and the owner would be back on Monday. I returned later that day to request the invoice for the work that the shop next door did. I was refused. June 13 Thursday: Since I did not receive the invoice from HFCS I visit Franks Body Shop next door to inquire about the invoice. I come to find out my car was never even in their garage for repairs. They only received the fender panel for a new paint job and never actually did any work on my car. Its now July 30th and I am driving around with a malfunctioning headlight and a damaged bumper. The owner has made no effort to contact me. I made numerous phone calls and messages. I stopped in a few times but the owner is never there. Bruce literally told me "shit happens" and I "should be happy my car is driveable". These guys are scumbag mechanics, if you care about your car at all definitely go anywhere else. read more
