The donuts are so amazing! Fresh made each day, they are soft and full of flavors. Their filled donuts are filled to the brim. The bakery staff are friendly and even though there is often a long line, they get you through it so quickly. The prices are a little on the high side but it is a treat to visit and worth the splurge. Go earlier in the day for the most choices. The decor is so fun and full of town history including benches from Red Wing pottery, old shops from town, and even old bakery equipment. They also have a small deli that has more lunch choices and a coffee shop with gourmet options or just a simple cup of self-serve coffee with about a dozen flavor options. It is a wonderful place to sit around and visit while enjoying your sweet treats. We stop almost every time we are in town and even make the trip on some lazy Saturday mornings from the Cities, They have won many awards and one trip will explain why. It's one of those touristy places that is "ok" but the hype around it makes you think it'll be amazing. Got there around 10am on a rainy Saturday and there was a line all the way through the space back to the door. The staff was friendly and handled it well. The cafe looked crazy with a line waiting for a table. The main issue, I think, is that none of the items in the case are labeled and move around throughout the day. So neither the staff or people ordering know what's available, where anything is, or where to go to look for anything in particular. If customers didn't have to ask 20 questions to get the 2-3 items they want the line might move quicker and the staff might be a bit less stressed. All that said: the donuts are fine. They're probably Krispy Kreme or Dunkin' quality. Taste like any other mass-produced, dialed in product from a shop that does ridiculous volume. Most stuff is just the same brioche or cake dough with different kitschy toppings. I think you could save yourself some time and a headache by going to Kwik Trip for some glazers and candy to put on top. read more

We stopped in here on Saturday. I used to work in red wing and this place has changed a ton! Big indoor retail area! We got some sourdough which is good. We also got a few desserts from the bakery case. The cake pop was very rich, basically just filled with cookie dough. The coconut macaroon was dry and bland. The sugar cookie also had very little flavor. The thing that really got me was all the flies in the bakery case. I watched over 20 files just landing on all the items in the bakery case. Took a little day trip to Red Wing and knew I had to stop by one of the most talked-about bakeries in Minnesota, and wow, it did not disappoint! I stopped in around 2:45pm on a Saturday, and the place was definitely busy, which I took as a good sign. Despite the crowd, the staff kept things moving efficiently, calling up the next customer as soon as they were ready. I appreciated the semi- organization. The gal who helped me was polite, but nothing particularly memorable just kind of neutral service. The bakery itself is large, well-lit, and decorated with bright colors that make it feel fun and welcoming. It has a really cheerful vibe, and everything is displayed beautifully. Now let's talk about that bakery case... HUGE. One of the biggest I've seen, packed with donuts, cookies, cakes, and so much more. I wanted to try it all, but I narrowed it down to just one item: a chocolate cake topped with chocolate mousse, nuts, and a chocolate drizzle. WOW! This thing was SCRUMPTIOUS. Cute little place. We were passing through on a road trip and it's always been on my bakery bucket list to try. I love the little coffee shop too! We got a variety of donuts and pastries. The glazed raised is by far the best glazed I've ever had. The cake donuts were great too! The cream cheese danish might have been our favorite. Wow! It was early when we got there so maybe the staff just had an off day. We weren't greeted nor told what anything was so we were just guessing. Which is ok, we like to try new things. We did get a couple other things too. A white chocolate raspberry scone, not my favorite. Quite salty? Got a Caramel nut roll, was a bit dry but warmed up with a glass of milk and it was good. I'm a sugar cookie lover so when I saw they had some with buttercream on top, I had to get one! I was very disappointed as it was the most bland and not good tasting cookie. I did throw it away. Other than the couple things we will absolutely be back for the cream cheese danish, raised glazed and cake donuts. So glad we got to try it! read more

We like to stop whenever we're on a roadtrip in that direction. It had changed since last we were there - remodeled a bit. While we enjoy coming there, we felt that the ladies behind the counter were very anxious to have customers make selections quickly . The one that waited on us was even rude. No smiles just standing there like we were taking too much time. I understand it's a busy bakery but we were there after 3 PM so the morning rush has definitely been long over. She didn't seem like she wanted to help us and when we asked for a bag for all the items we bought she never said a word just grabbed one and put our stuff inside. We stopped in here to fuel up before hiking Barn Bluff and were delighted by the selection of pastries and other homemade food. The coffee selection was amazing and I was thrilled to see my favorite flavor - Highlander Grog. My boys enjoyed their donuts but the stand out was the cinnamon bread loaf. Hanish Bakery is a really cute place and I love going there, but the donuts are not fresh!  They are the equivalent of day old items, but purchased at full price.  I've come here numerous times and I'm always disappointed!  I'm all excited for a delightfully fluffy, yummy donut, but instead it's hard and crunchy!  Not what I'm expecting!!!  Today I purchased a bear claw and when I picked it up it was as hard as could be, it actually made a "clunk" when I placed in on my plate!  NOT soft and tender and delicious.......Frustrating!! My partner is truly addicted to donuts and would eat them everyday if he could, so naturally we had to make a stop here while in the area! Large pastries for a very good price! It was hopping on a Saturday morning, so he jumped in line for donuts and I jumped in line for coffee. We took everything to go, but they do have two sections of indoor seating first come first serve. Hard space to socially distance in when busy. Pastries were very tasty, coffee we did not finish. A note about the service: The lady taking my order seemed upset. Get in get out vibes. Normally I wouldn't write about service as generally people are not paid well in the food industry. We made sure to tip which seemed to surprise her. The tip jar looked empty for how many people where there. I also want to note I worked bakery life for 5 years, and understand the high demands these business place on employees. The second incident that forced me to write about service took place when my partner was in line for donuts. He witnessed the employee shame the lady in front of him for not knowing the name of the pastry she pointed at. We stopped in here before work one day to grab coffee and donuts, I've been in the area for work before and never noticed this spot, but so glad we found it! We didn't call ahead, but they took our group with stride - making two to go coffees swiftly. We got a couple dozen donuts, which they picked out, and wow! What a selection! I was sad I couldn't put down more than one because I wanted to try them all. I got a latte in the morning with white chocolate raspberry (heads up to the barista - raspberry syrup curdles straight in milk, so try pumping it into the espresso before adding milk, a common mistake), and came back in the afternoon for a chai. They use tiger chai which is one of my favorites, so good. I'll definitely make it my stop in the mornings next time I'm in town. read more

In the spring they have Paczkis - a beautiful filled donut usually found in Polish bakeries around Eastertime. Hanisch's version consists of a lovely, slightly sweet dough with abundant fillings including apple, cherry, raspberry and even buttercream. Regardless, Red Wing is a great place for a day trip and a business meeting! :-) I tried the raspberry, white chocolate scone...big bummer. Super dry and not much for flavor. I could smell the powdered sugar from the glaze straight away. Not much flavor to the glaze - typical powdered sugar concoction. Also sampled the maple donut with nuts and that was yummy. I don't know what we got but they were all good. I especially like the one that loo like a horseshoe with the filing it was perfect. It's a light custard touch like cream puffs filling only clearly not mass produced. I am not a fan of muffins but this one is moist and you can taste the orange flavor as advertised. And the coffee options were great I had that horseshoe pastry with the perfect custard filling again 033019 and what can I say it's perfect. We also had the almond coconut crunch box for $6.
