Went for Thanksgiving dinner we both ordered the prime rib. Ordered medium rare . Was not!! We were not done with salad and out comes our dinner. Felt rushed meat was extremely fatty. When I told the waitress she just said oh I don't like fat either WHAT!! No apology even the owner took my plate and said nothing about all the fat left in my plate . I enjoy Hank's a great deal. Great salad bar (pre-pandemic, obviously), good menu, friendly staff. Very cozy sort of place. What you get here is very much a "Sunday dinner at Grandma's" sort of level of comfort food - turkey dinners, pot roast, fish and chips, etc. They don't try to be fancy and they don't need to be. They're very, very good for what they are. If you're more in the sandwich mood, I highly recommend either the Tuna Melt or Chicken Salad wrap. They don't skimp on the filling, and each comes with a pickle and large portion of (delicious!) fries. The desserts are a must try. I love the chocolate spoon pie and cheesecake; their desserts are much better quality than the average restaurant's. I must also add that IMHO, the prices are great for the portions that you get. Sometimes it's easy to be harsh on the culinary scene of Connecticut's Quiet Corner. The food is rarely fancy, almost always out-of-date by a decade or three, and the dining populace seems to be blissfully unaware of how bad it is. Hank's is a great restaurant, not because it bucks the trends of the area, but because it exemplifies them so well. There are no surprises here. Fried seafood, steak, New England clam chowder, even a freakin' salad bar. It's like a time warp. But it's all done really well. Rather than throw sun dried tomatoes and craisins into random inappropriate dishes as a misguided attempt to appear modern (a common tactic in the area), Hank's revels in tradition and serves classic New England food with pride. The quality found here puts other local institutions (I'm looking at you, Golden Greek) to shame. read more

We stopped in on our way back from the Cape. The reviews seemed ok so we figured we'd try it. I started with a mojito that was very good. I had the turkey dinner, it was just as I expected, sliced turkey breast over stuffing with mashed potatoes. It was basic and filling. My partner had the grilled chicken over pasta with vodka sauce. It was awful. The chicken seemed processed and fake, the texture was not that of chicken and was mechanically sliced. The sauce was as thick as water and tasted awful. Chicken breast on sale is $1.99 lb on sale and takes no time to grill and red sauce is so easy to make and Cooks Illustrated has a great recipe for vodka sauce. I don't understand why they don't make this from scratch, it would be so easy and quick. The salad bar was good,but just iceberg lettuce and some spinach. I don't think I would ever go to this restaurant as my own choice, but it is a convenient mid-way point between my boyfriend's parents and his aunt and uncle in Connecticut. Therefore, we tagged along for family dinner last Saturday night. Hank's is conveniently located on Rt. 6 in Connecticut, serving your typical mixed American fare. This is a family-owned restaurant, and it seems like all of the employees are connected to the family in some way; our waitress was the best friend of the owner's daughter. The decor is very country cottage with tchotchke everywhere. There were framed family pictures scattered throughout the waiting area, including a framed award for being Connecticut Magazine Reader's Choice Restaurant 2011 "Best by County." I thought maybe this meal would surprise me. It really didn't. The restaurant was old; they still had a large, hideous air purifier hanging from the dining room ceiling, dating back to the days of smoking in restaurants. Ick. The restrooms were TINY and located off the server station right next to the kitchen door. Singles, people, singles, for a restaurant holding at least 150 people. The ladies room was so small that I hit my head on the paper towel dispenser trying to reach the toilet. Not to mention I felt like I was in a sauna, quite literally, probably due to the fact that I was right next to the kitchen (which did look clean, by the way). Now the food. The food was decent. The big draw here is obviously the $9 (and change) senior meals for those over 55, which comes with an entree, soup, drink and pudding. You can add the unlimited salad bar for about $2.50. I chose one of the specials: Key West Tilapia, with rice pilaf, chicken noodle soup and the unlimited salad bar ($15.99). My favorite part was probably my wine selection though -- a glass of Stone Hill (local Connecticut winery) White for $5.50. The salad bar didn't live up to others I've been too, but it was fresh and clean. The chicken noodle soup tasted canned. The rice pilaf was heavy and sticky, and the tilapia was a tad dry but seasoned surprisingly well. The portion size was what amazed me; they were... true to portion size! I actually felt good about the amount of food I consumed because I didn't overeat. That said, I feel the prices were a tad high for the quality of the food. My entree was reasonable, but my boyfriend's chicken parm was also $15.99 and didn't come with soup -- a few bucks cheaper would have been suitable. The service was adequate and friendly. They easily accommodated our party, and our waitress was happy to let us sit and have a leisurely meal. Trying the pizza. Menu is standard New England. Kinda pricey, scratch that. It is pricey. 15.99 for just a plate of chicken parm. I can recommend the pizza, coffee, and dessert. Been there 2x both times ordered food both times sent back who ever is making there mashed potatoes its horrible !!! Prime Rib is ok but not a lot of flavor at all and the vegetables they served me were watery and the pot roast well felt like hospital food but yet fried fisherman's platter and chicken was good according to other people I was with and stuffed clams were great!! I drive past this place 2 times a day in my way to work... I have never stopped in and eaten here but being a vegetarian it looked like a steak and Potato kind of place... We went in and the decor matched what I thought it would be... Grandmas house sheik ... Dated and dark with roosters everywhere ... I ended up getting an amazing meal ... Stuffed eggplant parm... Great sauce and eggplant ... Salad bar was just fine...it was weird to see dried fruit and tail mix in it ... Price was average as well ... Overall a nice surprise with good menus options and great food ...I will gladly go here again... As far as restaurants in the northeast corner it is one of the better ones... First time visiting Hank's even though we have driven by ot for the past 6 yrs. The decor is cute and country. I was super happy with the salad bar, but disappointed you cany get soup with the salad bar or soup and salad bar alone. It's kinda old school diner like food. It's good, not great, my stuffing in my chicken breast was bland and didn't come with gravy. My husband put roast was fork tender. We will be back for salad bar again read more

Have tried this place a couple of times each time more disappointing than the last. Staff is very friendly however, they are expensive and the food isn't up to par. Each time I've had to send a dish back (and no I'm not that type of person) I ordered steak tips and only 3 pieces were actually meat the rest was fat and other things. I've been going to Hank's since I was a little girl, and it seems to have become more hit or miss in the last few years. The salad bar is great--and always has been great. Service is very nice----but here's where I became disappointed. My cousin, mum, and I came for lunch and my cousin ordered the chicken parm. It ended up tasting fishy. We mentioned it to our server, who very much pointed out then that the fish is fried in the same vat as the chicken. My cousin has a seafood allergy, and well, that's not great. I'm not sure why they do so, to save money, or to just not have to clean up two vats. That being said, I've worked in many a restaurant, and you use two vats. Period. Our server made it sound like every restaurant is now using one vat... and that they clearly state to let your server know if you have an allergy... but who mentions they have a seafood allergy if they DON'T order seafood, and fish isn't on the menu that day? It was a Saturday, and fish and chips are on Fridays... Luckily, they did make another chicken parm for my cousin, by satueeing the chicken, but no owner/manager came by to check in, nor did they comp anything off of our bill. Disappointing. read more

HAnks has always been among my favoite restaurants. The style is sort of country and a bit funky but always clean and the food is usually good if on the expensive side. Today however it was horrible. When one order roast beef one expects roast beef. What I got was reheated deli sliced roast beef. Salty and tasteless. It tasted exactly like the Sara Lee deli sliced beef I got from the market last week. The mashed potatoes were billed as homemade and real. Theywere probably real but definately frozen. The steamed veggies were over cooked and tasted of way to much rosemary. Our waitress seemed ditressed that i wasn't eating I told her it wasn't good. She did not seemed terribly concerned. I would eat there again but I wouldn't go there especially. My broiled Cajun chicken was dry and parts looked leathery. The artichoke dip was the best part of the meal. I would have been better off if I just stuck with the salad bar. It seemed to be decently maintained and didn't horrify me like salad bars normally do. Don't bother eating at hanks. After some good reviews we decided to try lunch. The bar tender was very busy on her cell phone face book page and the food was tasteless and expensive. I Waited for the staff to get my check as we were the only ones in the place.... The bartender continued to look at her phone from behind the bar. I brought my check and payment to her... She returned my card and slip and rolled her eyes at me as I signed the slip. I'm very happy I was told about this after I left. I will not be back. read more

Where do I start!!! First we walked in and as you walk in there is a sign the clearly says Please wait to be seated. So we are all standing there and standing there . I can see 3 waitresses talking to each other but totally ignoring us . So I walked over to where they were and said can someone please seat us ! She replied just seat yourself , we have no Hostess tonight... We should have walked out right then !!! Part 2: We ordered the Clam strip dinners and my son ordered the Chicken Fingers Dinner. The Clam Strips were totally rubbery and tasteless. The salad bar was ok at best. We all had French fries with our meals and that was the only thing we ended up eating!!! The chicken fingers looked like something out of a BJ's box. My son would not touch it. I would seriously like to know who in the hell owns this place. We went to Hank's this past weekend, not really knowing what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised by our meals! I had a stuffed chicken breast with mashed potatoes and gravy and my wife had the baked Scrod with a baked potato. My chicken was very good, though I had to add salt and pepper ( which I prefer to overly salty food). So some people may consider that bland I suppose. The baked Scrod had a delicious crust on it that the server said was walnut based. My wife really liked it.There was a really well stocked salad bar that was included with the entrees that had everything you could want. Our server, Kelsey, was very pleasant and not pushy. The dining room is a little dark, but that's the decor. No nonsense food at a reasonable price- we would definitely go back if we're ever up in that direction again. read more

I went here tonight with my mom and my daughter. I had the salad with grilled tuna. The tuna was some of the best fish I have had in years. My mom had the chicken fried steak and it was very good. Although , the mashed potatoes that came with the fried steak were a bit of a disappointment, they tasted like instant potatoes. My daughter had the the Alice burger with fries , also very good.
