One time my order was messed up on a delivery and I got the wrong size for the shirt I got as a reward. The owner called me personally to apologize and made the order right. I used to really like this place but I've been getting more and more disappointed. I'm a frequent customer and I honestly get one of the same three things. A salad, fries or soup. I can't really imagine why it's so difficult to get a salad right. Last time there was a dead bug in my salad. I waited and waited. And looked forward to it. And couldn't eat it. This time I ordered a salad with tomatoes ON THE SIDE and extra croutons. Which is also the way I do it literally every single time. The tomatoes were in the salad. There was a teeny little jar of croutons. Barely anything. And NO salad dressing. Honestly how difficult is it. Stopped in late morning after court appearance in New Brunswick, NJ., looking for breakfast and hot java. The space is small, but modern with less than ten booths, and a focus on take away. I checked the overhead digital menu and asked for the Breakfast Burrito. The folks behind the counter were friendly and helpful. They explained that each meal was prepared when ordered, and thus everything was hot and fresh. I retreated to a booth facing the TV and settled in. About 5 minutes later I was served a plate on which sat a large silver-wrapped conical package within which hid the burrito. Upon unsealing my meal I found a super sized tortilla that had a nice aroma, but which was otherwise not visible within. I had to take a huge bite to make a large enough opening to spy within. I saw egg, bacon, onion, green pepper, cheese, ketchup, salt and pepper. The taste was good, but perhaps unbalanced with too much firm green pepper, and not enough bacon or cheese to allow those flavors to dominate. Neither did I capture essence of salsa or other chili-like spices. Rather, there was a subtle sweetness. Not bad, but not expected. Hansel 'n Griddle has a nice operation here, and using clever fairy tale identity is nice as long as it lends to the overall impression of the experience. I thought it did. I would frequent this place when visiting Rutgers friends and still would come back here once a while to remember the old times and get a crisp! If I could recommend anything here it would be their crisps. It's basically a quesadilla with a side of salsa or sour cream. I've had the chicken, breakfast, and steak crisp. Steak is my favorite. It's a mix of cheeses, tomato, and cheesesteak-like steak. I get that with wedge fries every time and I haven't regretted it yet. They have breakfast, burgers, salads, paninis, cookies, and some specials. The burgers are solid choices as well. If you're a pickle person, good news! They have a barrel of free pickles for your dining pleasure. They're the soft and extra vinegary kind. I enjoy them. I would not, however, recommend their smoothies. Taste is ok but there's something about it that leaves a weird thick film in my mouth. There must be a very viscous syrup or similar substance used to make it. Oh that Hansel! I've been a fan of Hansel & Griddle for a few years now. My partner and I frequented the Church street location. But since they newly opened up this place on Easton Ave, we go here more! The new place has as much seating as the Church street location and easier to find parking. The girls are quick to take your order and the food comes out pretty quickly. Be sure to ask for "to go" containers in case you don't finish your food. The line can get pretty long during the weekends especially when the college kiddos are hungry. Seating is a bit cramped, but we usually don't have a problem finding a place to sit. They also have a few outdoor tables, but it's too cold for that now. Brrrr. They have comfy couches to sit on while you wait for your food if you're dining out. They do deliver, but make sure you call the right location and delivery tends to take 30 minutes or longer. Take that into account, especially if you're hungry! I ordered the Crispy garden and a brownie on 1.13.17, (Saturday night) and 6 hours later became violently ill. I was sick for the rest of the day on Sunday and almost went to the hospital. My Sunday plans were ruined and my health was in jeopardy. I called Hansel the next night to report what happened and asked to speak to the manager... I was then transferred to another person and who was extremely rude. He told me there's a stomach virus going around and it wasn't the food. Sorry but I don't think I would recover that quickly from a stomach virus! I insisted it was the food and the guy told me he would give my information to the owner who would call me back. No apology, no refund, no coupon, nothing! Not even a call from the owner! When Hansel was but a cute little shack off Easton Avenue, Sorry Charlie was the only thing I would get not because I was boring but because it was so damn good! Well, Hansel has expanded since then to different parts of Jersey and my palate has also widened. Recently, I visited my old alma mater Rutgers to reminisce and dropped by Hansel. I ordered Sorry Charlie and concluded that it's still the best tuna wrap I've ever had. How is it possible after all these years? I've traveled some, eaten much, and opened up to new things. So very disappointed. This was my first time eating here. I was having my car fixed across the street at the amazing University Shell, who I recommend EVERYONE take their cars to, and decided to kill two birds with one stone by having lunch with one of my clients. I saw the adorable print in the windows and walked over to check out the menu at Handel & Griddle. I asked if they had vegetarian and vegan options and was told they only had vegetarian and non vegetarian foods. But not to fret, yet! I know how to veganize any menu so I ordered a plain (meaning no sauce) veggie burger after discovering that their patty was vegan however their BBQ sauce had high fructose corn syrup in it. Yuck! Most places do too so also NOT a biggie. I also ordered a berry smoothie that I too discovered was vegan after googling the ingredients. The disaster came when they delivered my veggie burger. The patty was cold and dry. I asked for a fresh patty, hoping that maybe I got the last one from an older batch. They quickly brought out a hot, new patty but unfortunately it was as dry as a sponge left in the sink overnight. So clearly I won't be eating here again BUT at least my client enjoyed her French toast (she's not vegan) and at least they accommodated my request for salsa and Italian salad dressing so that I could make my own dipping sauce for the yummy potato wedges that I did eat.
