While on Rt. 18 the other day, we stopped at Perkins. We had not been at a Perkins in a very long time. It was a Monday evening, there were two tables with customers, the layout was the same Perkins as all the others. There was one waitress as they were short staffed. Little by little the customers started coming in, next thing you see our section of the restaurant was completely full. The ambiance was relaxed, it seems they were all regulars as they knew the staff. The waitress was amazing, the way she eased her way from one table to the other, no one seemed to be anxious about waiting. The Perkins food was very good, just like it has always been. I had liver with onions and bacon (don't judge my favorite diner food), it was delicious. My husband had their half chicken meal and he also thought it was very good. As for dessert you can't go to Perkins and not have their pies, delicious as always ! On our way out, we noticed that the other side of the restaurant was equally packed. Great service by one hard working waitress who didn't seem stressed at al. Thank you..We would definitely return to this Perkins. read more

Haven't been to a Perkins in decades so couldn't wait to try their pancakes after all these years. I got the hot chocolate and the omelette with everything which comes with pancakes and breakfast potatoes. The pancakes were everything I remembered about them. Always a pleasure. The omelette was good especially with added sour cream on the side. The breakfast potatoes were a good size and nice and crispy! Service was good. The waiter was very attentive. I had lunch here with my son recently and I was glad to see that they had outdoor seating tent in front, with indoor social distancing, staff mask-wearing thoroughly enforced. We got seated in the corner of a dining room away from other diners (everyone seemed to me at least 2-3 booths away from one another) and the waitress was courteous. My Pot roast melt sandwich duo with Honey mustard chicken salad was satisfying. Sandwich was OK but my son kept marveling at how delicious the chicken tender bites in the salad were so I kept donating. :) He had eggs with hashbrown kids menu and remarked that the scrambled egg was done very tastily. His kids meal came with OJ and a "magic cookie" (1/2 sugar, 1/2 choc chip) the waitress handed to my son as we checked out. I've loved Perkins for their breakfast and late night stop-bys and was glad to see them doing their thing. While this wasn't a 4-star, a 3-star rating is an encouragement for them to keep at it! read more

Got served in this establishment by a very rude waitress. Made me feel like I was not welcomed at the restaurant, and was being a nuisance by buying food, had an attitude for mo reason. At one point raising her voice at me, meanwhile I'm being polite and just shocked at her behavior. My food was slightly burn as you can see below, yet I didn't complain it all, just felt sometimes things happen and ate the food. Wanted to ask for a different waitress but she was the only one there. I was going to order more food to go but decided against it do to her behavior. Still left a tip because the person in me would not let me walk away without tipping, however didn't tip 25% which is what I usually tip. Not sure if I will return . 2 starts for the hostess who walked us to our table was nice and the food besides being slightly burn was tasty. They have to do better when it comes to customer service. :( read more

For some reason Perkins gets a bad rap accompanied by eyerolls whenever I mention it. It could be that servers here smile and greet you warmly - personality traits not normally valued in the Great Garden State. This micro-chain diner and bakery has numerous locations across New Jersey so I haven't been to them all but this particular iteration off Route 18 is as perfectly dinerish as you can get. Excellent coffee, fluffy omelettes and pancakes that defy you to make them this good at home (I can't.) The only downside is they get busy so there's a wait in prime time but on a weekend you get that all over. Sure, I've waited at Perkins but I've never been disappointed. Five easy stars. read more

My daughter and I stopped in for dinner, partially because I had a coupon for BOGO on any dinner. They serve breakfast all day, so we wanted omelettes. We were told that the coupon was only valid on certain menu items. But all it said on the coupon was that it was for BOGO on any meal after 4PM. The waitress was attentive. The prices are a bit high for this type of establishment. I had the chicken strips and they were too peppery. My daughter liked them though. She had chicken stir fry and liked it, but saved it for lunch as she finished my chicken. read more

Hidden gem! I went here for breakfast on a Saturday. It was definitely busy, but the staff were not overwhelmed. Loved being greeted by smiling faces and very attentive what we needed throughout our meal. I had the California Eggs Benedict with the potatoes. The potatoes were crispy and tasty and the Eggs Benedict was great; very flavorful, filling, but also light. I would highly recommend and will definitely be coming back! read more

I had an omelette, pretty sure it's was called " Granny " something I am not completely sure but you can't miss it it's in omelette section and the name starts with granny. It was really good, very tasty and overall delicious. The dinner itself was pretty good, pretty clean, but the seat I was at in the booth was ripped with tape over it, but it didn't affect anything. I know there's a big thing about looking down at chain restaurants, but sometimes you gotta embrace it. Came here for brunch on a Saturday morning & was beyond pleased. The staff was extremely courteous & friendly, attentive in the best way. The food was great. Had the Hearty Harvest omelette which I was honestly surprised how nice the size of the portion was and the quality of all the ingredients. The fruit was great, not mushy & the toast was toasted to a perfect brown. The restaurant was a good size, the layout let's you choose from a booth or table. Came here yesterday with family and relatives (7 people in total) for brunch! Dad said Perkins got the best pancakes in the world...! Lol but anyways, staffs were friendly and service was good too. Anyways... time for the FOOD lol! My dad and brother ordered the build your breakfast with sunny sided eggs, bacon and hash browns. Dad also ordered pancakes. My grandma got the spinach and mushroom dish. My mom and aunt ordered the corn beef hash, and my uncle got the classic egg benedict. Finally, as for me, I ordered the California avocado benedict. OMG....! My dish tasted AMAZING!!! Eggs poached beautifully, with runny yolk, bacon nice and crispy and the tomatoes were super flavorful! Of course can't leave out the avocado! Mmsss, amazing! And since my dad said the pancakes here are the best he's even eaten, I couldn't resist to try a piece. Pancakes tasted great, nice and fluffy but not the best I've ever eaten though. I really don't like to give a bad rating but the food was so bad here I have to do it. I gave a star for outdoor dining. I appreciate that during these tough pandemic times. I gave another star for the waitress who was also the hostess. She did well. Ok I got the good out of the way. Now about the food. It was HORRIBLE! My sister and daughter ordered steak and eggs. The steak was just a piece of meat on the plate. No seasoning, no sauce and dry. The eggs taste fake. If that's possible. My niece had pepper steak, onions and sautéed mushrooms over potatoes. It had maybe 5 pieces of steak. It was full of peppers mushroom and a whole lot of potatoes. Thankfully I ordered chicken tenders. They were fresh hot and good. What a pleasant surprise. Never thought about coming here for dinner. We ate off the "over 55" menu and can't wait to go back. Selection was good, quantity was good and quality was great. The matzah ball soup was a little less flavorful than I would have liked. The entree was giant and fabulous. Our waiter, Fernando was extremely personable. Alfonso if you ever come to Perkins and are served by this man Alfonso! Immediately request a new server or go to a different restaurant. This man has the audacity to tell me that after having to drive back to the restaurant all after they've messed up my order multiple times prior, that "Perkins" went ahead and made your order from "scratch". I asked Mr. Alfonso did you just take my "previous" order and just put it back on the skillet to reheat and place whatever items you missed in the first place? Alfonso so called assured me that he would never do something like that. Smfh, I got home to see the turkey back I received was waaayyy over cooked, hard as rock that I ended up giving it to my dog to eat. I requested sunny side up eggs to only have them put it back on the stove to quickly reheat which left me with over cooked eggs as well. The toast was beyond soggy as if it was still sitting in the container waiting for the rest of my food to be reheated. What a shame! How is it this man still has a job mind boggles me, it's people like him that come across the wrong person who will go the extra miles /measure to make sure people are fully aware of what kind of employee work here. Ever since the management changed a few years back, this place has gotten worse and worse progressively. Now you can wait 15 minutes for a table and if the Hosts very rude sister comes in and pressures her Brother for a table, he will seat her a head of everyone. Then when you complain or ask "Why is she getting to sit first?" Yeah The Host will just let you know that he is all for favoritism and tell you "thats my sister". Meantime his "sister" beeps her horn rudely at people trying navigate the ice in the parking lot like she just couldn't wait to jump the line! Didn't look like she had missed many meals in the past. Dunno why anyone thinks this is OK behavior on a Sunday morning, especially Valentines Day when people have been waiting for a table for an hour, like the folks who got there before us, but it will certainly stop me from ever paying a Perkins to make me their crappy food ever again. I suggest you go to the Stewarts or the Colonial Diner if you want good food that represents NJ. Perkins is terrible now and it is a Corporate chain as well..... This is a really good chain restaurant! We had quick service, and we were actually the first ones here, since when we arrived, they just opened! Our service was quick. The host gladly sat us outside. It's good that their tent is covered, in case of it raining outside as well. Another waitress took our order. She was very nice, and patient. She also gave good recommendations on the menu. I got the strawberry croissant french toast, and the French toast was nice and soft. The strawberries and vanilla cream was a bit too sweet for me but it was good. I really liked the hash browns as well. The sunny side up eggs were delicious as well, and nice and crispy. on the ends! Very good restaurant overall! read more

This is the PERKINS by Walmart on Rt 18 in East Brunswick.... I have given this dump SEVERAL chances to do the right thing, due to the convenience of how close it is to my home... this was the last straw... The last time I ate there, I ordered an omelette with American Cheese, it came to the table COLD, with shredded Cheddar cheese lazily sprinkled on it... when I complained, I was told " we don't cook the cheese into the eggs... or it STICKS TO THE GRIDDLE!! The peasant potato's were so over fried, they were like little lumps of charcoal.... everything just sucked. PERIOD! Including the eye rolling attitude of the wait staff. THIS time, it was Valentines Day... so there was an HOUR wait.... we were the next to be seated, when this loud mouth, Jabba the Hutt looking blonde KAREN stomps into the restaurant... proclaims to the submissive worm she was with... " don't worry, we're getting the next table" I didn't say anything, because I was PRETTY sure that that wasn't going to be the case... but SURE ENOUGH... the host hands them silverware and menus, and ushered them to MY table!!! When I said " excuse me, we were next " ... the idiot, rather than making something up about reservations, says, VERY COMBATIVELY " ummm... that's my sister, ok pal?" To which I answered.. " NO, it's really NOT!!"... I then let him and the restaurant know that on the way in... she was honking at a family that was walking in the snow with 2 small children, because she couldn't get her hulking frame in the restaurant fast enough.... and I stormed out.... NEVER EAT AT THIS PERKINS!!! The GOOD news is, right across the highway, is a STEWART'S that is SURPRISINGLY delicious... and LIGHT YEARS better than this crappy PERKINS on Rt. 18.... This past weekend, my boyfriend and best friend decided to have dinner at this establishment. The results were ghastly. My friend was served jumbo shrimp that was bland and tasted like cardboard. The spinach was bitter. The rice was chunky, flavorless, and tasted like Dove soap. She sent the entire dish back to the kitchen, describing it as "disgusting." While the waitress was sweet and management was kind, she did not want to be served another dish of horror. This dish from hell was removed from our bill and my friend went home starving. Myself and my boyfriend both ordered the country fried chicken dish, which consisted of chicken, a biscuit, gravy, eggs, and bacon. I asked for the gravy to be added on the side. I was not granted this wish. Instead, the gravy mounted my biscuit in such a sad fashion that even the gravy looked as if it did not have the will to live. I decided not to open my mouth and mention this, as I did not want to be served such an abomination twice. The bacon tasted like cardboard. The eggs were cold and tasted like plastic -- I would not serve this to our dog. Ladies, I have never been incarcerated, but I could only imagine that prison food would taste better than the breakfast massacre I was served. I do not quite know what has happened to Perkins in recent years. My family and I have visited this restaurant for many years, but my recent visit has solidified my opinion that you are much better off venturing to another diner nearby. Perhaps Colonial Diner, also on Route 18. They may not be a chain restaurant, but after this experience, that is a good thing. read more
