Owner was alone at the bar. He made and served up a sloppy sushi entree with his fingers, not even adding a new plate when serving it at the bar. What a disappointment. This was a legend. My friend and I went at 6pm before a show at the playhouse - were locals and she's been a patron for 20'years - in short - we were two of very few. Ordered a few very simple things "blue crab hand roll" which came back many times as "tuna or what kind of hand roll?" Blue crab. "Tuna or spicy tuna?" Then proceeded to Order more - Japanese burrito roll which my friend used to love - An hour later it never came. Nothing came. I said I was have a play to be at in 10 minutes and nothing has arrived in an hour. So we got the bill. For everything we ordered and never got. The people started yelling at us. Getting legit aggressive "I know this owner and you need to shut up or I'll show you what's going on" Whatttt? Some 20 year old something trying to create a fight and he got other people to start yelling at us because I asked "the bill has everything we ordered but we never got." Never again. #1 Sushi is fresh. We tried the hamachi(yellowtail), hirami(halibut), salmon, saba(mackerel), fuji roll, and miso. Hamachi, hirami, and saba were especially good. Salmon was just average. Fuji roll was good, quite a bit different than pictured in the menu however. Lot's of kewpie(mayo) and teriyaki sauce. Not a roll person myself, but ordered it for the little one, who wasn't too keen on the shrimp tempura. Luckily we ordered the picky eater the cucumber roll, which she promptly devoured like a cookie monster and requested more. Presentation was awesome. Beautiful and generous cuts. The sushi man is a pro. #2 Service was atrocious. This is odd to me since normally most Japanese restaurants have stellar service. The lady there was not very professional since really displayed a disaffection for helping anyone. So the place was completely empty save for a party of four that sat outside which we also did. It took a very long time to even get acknowledged we were there to eat and I also just left without ordering since I'd rather take my business to a place that actually wants it. I was wondering why this place was so empty on Sunday at lunchtime, but our waitress definitely filled in that blank for me. Zero acknowledgement of our existence. After a long wait (20 min in an empty restaurant?), we finally got our menus. For instance we ordered water for our party of four so she brought back two waters. what? For $9/nigiri, $16/roll can you spare another water glass? Then the waitress proceeded to butcher our order. I've had plenty of times when our waiter doesn't understand english that well, especially at a Japanese restaurant, but never had I had someone who also didn't care to get it right either. I ordered the sushi and sashimi combo and the waitress proceeded to come back with a nigiri order. I thought she wanted to know what type of nigiri for this combo platter, but even that was screwed up. My tuna order never showed up and the saba order came twice. We actually wanted to order more since the fish was tasty, but we bailed since the orders took way to long to fulfill. When we left there were two people at the sushi bar. I try to be compassionate since I worked in the service industry for a long time, but this was a bridge too far and it ruined the dining experience. Also the bill was so confusing with double orders on certain orders and no charge on others; what a mess to calculate. My advice, sit at the sushi bar please! The sushi man is legit. Prolly would raise this review by a star at least. #3 Ambiance: outdoor seating was nice since the day was so amazing, but I wouldn't risk it for poor service. read more

We used to LOVE Hapi Sushi. Best sushi in Laguna Beach. We live close by and we are now trying to figure out if they are permanently closed. We stop by on a random Friday night or a Saturday, lunch time, middle of the week... NOPE! Closed. We understand they can't answer the phone, maybe they are super busy but still! Maybe set up a voicemail telling people if they're open or closed? If that's too expensive, maybe buy an old school answering machine? You know, with cassettes? We are even thinking of calling the Italian restaurant next door and see if they can check for us. They are so nice, they may do it! However, that's not sustainable and it would be rude. I seriously wish I could give 10 stars! I also wish I still had the pictures of all the amazing sushi I ate. Finished up a work event at the Ritz Carlton, and I had one thing on the brain....SUSHI! My date and I drove around for a while, before finally deciding on giving Hapi Sushi a try.....and thank our lucky beach waves we did. We sat at the bar, and were immediately greeted by the Sushi Chef, with menus and asked our drink order. We damn near ordered one of everything. The sushi was the most fresh I have ever had, the portions were decent size. (big isn't always better) We laughed and chopped it up with the Chef the whole time. My date said "This is the best sushi I have ever had man" and the chef replied with "I know." LOL! The confidence definitely showed in his work. We gladly spent over $100 trying all the goods. I recommend this joint to anyone and everyone! I live in Bakersfield, but a trip down there just for the amazing sushi would be worth it to me! ;) read more

A quiet, little Japanese restaurant tucked in between a few shops in Laguna! Stumbled across Hapi Sushi while taking a stroll through Laguna. It is small and cozy on the inside with fun decor. Seeing that there was no crowd made me a little nervous because that must mean that this place was not good. The rolls were a bit skinny and small but overall really good 79 roll: This roll had eel, avocado, and slices of strawberries on top. This sounded very interesting and it was one of their specials. I took a bit and it was amazingly interesting and good! You can taste the citrus of the strawberries and then the fish. Very very good! Baked Mussels: This was also good. $8.40 for 4 was a bit much but it was tasty. Great spot for fresh sushi in the Laguna Beach area. A true hidden gem! Atmosphere is great. The interior decorating was clearly done with purpose and intent, and the Hawaiian music actually felt like a good choice for the "vibe" the restaurant gives off. Now for the actual sushi - it is a small, limited menu but all the options are enticing and fresh. Rolls were delicious and the fish was extremely fresh. This place has been reliable for a few decades. He's a real sushi chef, and old-school. I once worked for a master Japanese chef, and recognize certain habits in common with trained Japanese chefs. I'm only sad that I don't see it as busy as other nearby hipster rookie restaurants. I also like that they have a large selection of the six-piece rolls that actually fit in my mouth in one bite as sushi was designed for. The problem with the other sushi restaurants is for the solo diner, who doesn't feel like spending $20 on one roll, but would rather spend 25 and get three different selections. We actually were also grabbing dinner before the show the same night. Incident did not play out as described . Restaurant was packed and the 2 ladies made an unnecessary scene and were actually the ones shouting at the employees. We returned again tonight and had another amazing dinner. Hapi sushi was not so hapi. My friend and I went there for lunch and we sat Outside. We had a lack of service sitting outside. Waiting like 15+ minutes Or for our food to be brought out and when it was brought out it was cold. We were unsatisfied with one of the rolls and asked if we could exchange it for another item on the menu and we're told that that would be fine but we would have to pay for both rolls even though the original roll was not touched. The first time we went there I gave it a five star review. The food is good I like the atmosphere and it's in a great location in downtown Laguna. However every time we go back they never seem to be open and they seem like they just don't care, not very friendly. Sometimes we get there five minutes before they open and all the person says is "we are closed" Never says come on in or it's almost opening time will serve you. They don't seem to want the business. AMAZING, DELICIOUS AND MEMORABLE. My girlfriend is not the biggest sushi lover (I am) so she gets the California roll wherever we go. I seldom try one b/c it's just just so "simple". They brought hers out, I just happened to take one, OMG, it was SOOO good. I was like, "if they're California roll is this good, I'm in for a real treat when my order comes...". I was right, my rainbow roll was PERFECT. The rice cooked sooo well, each piece of fish quality, the avocado amazing, seaweed on point.
