This is really tasty although slightly expensive for what it is. Crunchy patty plater: plate includes warm brown rice, crunchy bits, salad, almonds, and panko vegan meat. This was actually quite tasty and filling. If I lived closer I'd get this to-go quite often. The (I assume?) owners are very sweet as well. 1.5 Stars - i'll round up though. I will be forthright and say that I might be a bit biased in this review. I am by no means a healthy person and i absolutely can not stand the taste of anything "diet," so this might be like a health concious person eating at a fried chicken joint and hating it because it's greasy. Happiness Cafe is all about the gluten free, vegan, lactose tolerant, etc. etc. and to me, it tasted a lil bland and i wanted to toss sugar into the desserts. This family owned vegan establishment is a little piece of heaven for vegetarians and vegans. Everything offered here is plant based and adheres to the strict vegan code. No meat based products. So if you're a strict vegan, you're safe to dine, here no worries. I've been here a few times and LOVE the mock pesto chicken on a baguette roll. Mmm flavorful. The baguette is fresh with crunch on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. Marinated mock chicken with a delightful pesto sauce. Tomato, lettuce, and vegan mayo. Can't tell you're not eating the real thing. Also tried the mock beef noodle soup and thought that was good but I'd rather opt for the pesto sandwich. For dessert we had the waffles loaded with fruit and their vegan ice cream. Seriously good! I'm not sure what brand of vegan ice cream they serve but its as good if not better than regular ice cream. My only gripe would be the prices. A bit on the higher side and the portions are somewhat small. The pesto sandwich is not that big for $8 and I can see people still being hungry if that is all that was ordered. Compared to places like Veggie Grill where you also get sides with your order. $8 only gets you the sandwich here. This was on two different visits. On my first visit I got the Noodle Soup & the bag of Spicy Soybeans. Let me just say I did not enjoy either. The only thing I ate out of the Noodle Soup was the noodles after trying a piece of meat and not liking it. The Spicy Soybeans were just not my cup of tea. However, the second time I came everything I got was worth the visit. We ordered the Waffles & Ice Cream. It came with fruits, whipped cream, two scoops of ice cream and chocolate syrup. For the ice cream I chose the Cookies & Cream and Coffee flavored. We also ordered the Happiness Smoothie which was made up of Mango, Pineapple & Coconut. It was surprisingly a pretty good combo. I found this place from Yelp's new business's opened in your area. Decided I would swing by and check it out. Turns out its literally 2 blocks away and it replaces this other Chinese shaved ice place. Vegan ice cream, smoothies, milk teas and shaved ice! I wasn't quite sure what to order so I scrolled through the yelp pictures and saw Vegan Halo Halo. Hmmm. might be worth a try. really just their shaved ice with 4 toppings + a scoop of ice cream. The 4th condiment is .50 cents extra. The regular size is 2.75. I missed what the price for the large is. To make your Halo Halo: ask for, grass jelly, sweet rice ball, red bean, plus condense milk (don't worry! still vegan.. its soy condense milk) and add a scoop of butter pecan ice cream. The ice cream itself taste a bit sweeter than regular ice cream, but it went well with the other items. The gentleman that helped me was super friendly! Lucky me, two of my friends were down to try it, (one of them had Vegan ice cream before at a different place and was excited to try Happiness Cafe's offerings). FOOD -------------------- - Avocado Rolls - I LOVE avocados, and we ordered two orders of these. They were alright... The dipping sauce was good, but I prefer Cheesecake Factory's avocado rolls. - Waffle Ice Cream (with a choice of a single scoop of ice cream) - Not worth the price to be honest. We didn't enjoy the waffle at all. The "vegan" mint chocolate chip ice cream was okay. - Special Shaved Ice - Their special shaved ice sounded good, but failed to deliver something "special". You get to choose a scoop of ice cream with it, which we thought was unnecessary. The fresh fruits toppings were good, but I've had better. You can also add other toppings to customize it for an extra price. We added: barley, tapioca balls, and another item I can't remember. :X Overall, my first experience with Vegan ice cream wasn't all that exciting! It's expensive. Now I got that out, Happiness Cafe has a lot of love to it. The interior is really bright, the worker is sweet, and there are various foods and drinks to choose from. From my trip, I got the avocado durian smoothie. This mix was unique and I could taste both flavors simultaneously. The pearls though are nasty for some reason but everything else is great. Second time here yesterday and got a hot grass jelly bowl with red bean, taro, and rice balls. Amazing. Not too sweet. Taro is fresh (not canned). Rice balls are obviously housemade with the right texture. Silver lining that Meet Fresh was packed, otherwise I wouldn't have ventured out across town. Every time I come here I usually order their items that are on the safe side just in case I wouldn't like something I had high expectations for. This café is located right by the Bambu in the same plaza as Ranch 99, in San Jose. Came to this café around 2 or 3pm in the afternoon, and there was barely anyone inside except for a family of 4. More and more people entered the café the longer I stayed. I ordered the Jasmine Milk Tea, but they heard "Jasmine Green Milk Tea". Rookie mistake. They have been around for a while though. Better business than Bambu next door, and cozier too. Didn't get a chance to stay long though. The café was just so crowded. Thanked the lady at the register for my drink, and left. This place is becoming one of my favorite joints to go to. Their milk teas are the bomb; smooth and lightweight and the boba is always chewy. Another favorite is the avocado rolls which come in a crispy wrap filled with avocado, tofu filling, and veggies. The sauce that comes with it is this sweet and sour sauce. Also, I'm not too familiar with vegan food, but one of my favorites is the tuna melt which tastes just like tuna. Their pesto sandwich is pretty good too, except I don't really like the bread that comes with it. A bit too hard for my taste. Overall, they have a good selection but I wish they had a wider food variety. I noticed in the older reviews they have veggie stews and noodles, but they don't have those options anymore. I had to write an essay about vegan restaurants and William was more than happy to share information about his store. You can taste the whole wheat that it is made from, I like that though. You can tell it wasn't chicken. Avocado spring roll: it was the best thing I had there! The pastry wrap was so good and super crispy and flakey. I will get that every time I come! Brown rice and stir fry strips: it was okay, i can see myself getting it again. You could tell it wasn't chicken though. The portion was good enough for me. I only was able to finish half. Brown rice and "beef" stew: I wasn't a fan of it because the texture was weird. The sauce was good though Pesto spaghetti: The first bite was gooood but then it got a little too oily. The chicken from that was bomb! Ice cream: I got the mint chocolate chip and I did not like it too much. I would probably skip out on the ice cream next time. You could really tell that it wasn't made with milk or cream. Avocado shake: yummy! Didn't taste a difference with regular shakes. Overall, I am very happy with the place and the service, the food is alright. My family and I wanted some hot drinks but Bambu next door didn't have anything that we would like so we found this cafe! Got black milk tea and jasmine milk tea both hot and with pearls. Absolutely loved it piping hot! The hot milk tea were better than many other hot milk teas I tried. Plus I love how they gave you a special long spoon for the toppings! Would be easier if they did a special cap instead, modified with a hole big enough for toppings. Although the pearls could fit through the small hole if you didn't get it stuck together. Came back again on Lunar New Year because parking was a nightmare at VietnamTown when we wanted Tasty Pot. We got avocado rolls and vegan pho (and of course the hot drinks). The avocado rolls were SO GOOD. I see why people talk so highly of it. Nice crunch with the hot yummy avocado and veggies. It's like heaven. The pho though was okay. I like the soup and bak choy but it wasn't anything special. The "meat" which were tofu and some other things weren't spectacular, and the noodles were okay. You order at the counter and then they bring your food. They give you water in this tiny cup so you have to get up and go ask for more if you finish it. Kinda annoying. The food was barely ok.
