Happy burrito is a small take out only restaurant that offers cheap eats in a time that eating out can be a major hit on your wallet. I don't like beans at all but at happy burrito I can handle their refried beans. The usually go for the enchilada plate which is under $10 for 2 enchilada rice and beans. A literal doorway that has a steel table blocking the entrance. 4 beautiful abuelas working their magic beyond the steel table. A friend of mine walks daily for exercise, she invited me one day. We came closer towards closing, so there was a line on the sidewalk. People were quiet in thought as they waited patiently to be called. Depending on who's working at the door, they take your order, maybe take your card, walk your order back & then bring you your receipt. They work quickly to make your order! There's nothing fancy to see here; just really delicious food. My friend suggested the chicken as she does not eat red meat. As an afterthought, I ordered a chicken tostada. I could smell the chicken as we were walking away. I didn't get 20 feet away from the place! I sat down and just had to take a bite. The bite was all it took. I devoured it in less than 5 minutes. I've had the carnitas burrito. I've had the Al pastor (crazy good), the carne asada; delicious. Something about the chicken is once you have it; you gotta get some more. A lot of people like steak & carnitas, I get it. I'm sure there's more on the menu that need exploring. Most people like burritos because who doesn't? I told him he might not want to try. I suggested it was OK if he just forgot about it. I didn't know I would need to literally PROTECT my already traumatized boyfriend from the mean lady at HAPPY Burrito but that was actually the reality of it. He was already having a panic attack (it effected him more than he thought it would) being close to the location where he was a victim of gun violence and trying to order my burrito while the lady taking his order was being so rude and hostile intensified his panic attack, and even triggered his own eating order -- The lady was so rude to him he said he almost started crying right there -- and he was going to order himself a burrito after he ordered mine but he didn't have the will to do it. He couldn't even order himself a burrito because he was too scared / anxious to continue speaking to her. When he got home, the fact he didn't have his own burrito triggered my own eating disorder -- what was I going to do? Just eat my burrito in front of him?! They aren't the biggest burritos! I didn't want to share!!! This actually caused me all the anxiety in the world, if we're being honest. This is a popular place in the downtown area known for cheap burritos. I came around 12:30p, and there was a small line. Service was pretty quick as they had maybe 5 employees working behind the counter. There's indoor seating. It seats about 10 people with three tables in the front area. Note that the mininum amount you have to purchase to use your credit card is $5. On the menu they have multiple types of burritos: baby burrito, regular burrito, super burrito, and happy burrito, in ascending order of pricing. The difference is that the super burrito has guac and cheese and the happy burrito has sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes in addition to guac and cheese. They also have an all meat and no meat burrito. I ordered the happy burrito, which costs $6.88 with tax. The burritos are an okay size. It is not stuffed with a bunch of ingredients like Chipotle burritos are, so the width is not as big. Check out my picture for sizing. The burrito tasted pretty good; the carne asada was soft and tender. The hot sauce that comes with the burrito is amazing. It hit my tongue with a big kick of flavor. I used to come here all the time and wanted to support this place but it went so far down hill that I have to let people know to never come here. They put little stickers over the original prices and you can barely read the menu through the dirty glass. I paid 16$ for two "super tacos" because I could see the little sticker over the original price. Regular tacos are 3.50 but "super" are 8? This place has been around for almost 40 years! It's just a hole in a wall type of place and they serve no frills, cheap burrito with lots of carb fillers. I ordered the pork (not carnitas) burrito and it came with a bit of everything on it (meat, refried beans, cheese, guac. sauce, sour cream, lettuce and rice). The flour tortilla is super chewy and good. I probably has lard in it that they buy from a larger distributor. This place kind of reminds me of cafeteria food back in the 90's -- a little watered down and not super flavorful, but there is a certain nostalgia and enough flavor that makes it taste good. The reason that I am giving them a solid 4 star is because I know it's not an institution like La Taqueria or Taqueria Cancun, nor is it one of those hip Senor Sisig type of place. A Oak-town classic! The foods is oh so savory and the service is down home. I prefer the Chile Verde plate made with chunks of pork shoulder, slow cooked in a green chile sauce of jalapeño chiles, garlic, and tomatillos. I decided to give happy Burrito another try after they have been reopened. They were closed down due uncleaned and unhealthy work place . I guess nothing has changed. There was a plastic white wires in my burrito. I have attached pictures for reference. I would avoid this place. They used to be the a good family run business but that is clearly not the case anymore. I have reported them to local Food and drug administration with these samples. I have been going to this place for years...! If I was close enough I'd have it at least once a week. Thinking about it...when I worked downtown I DID have them AT LEAST once a week. This place is also super nostalgic...for me. I would get it as a midday treat when I had to sit for hours getting my hair braided. This place is like a weird time warp. The kindly old man who took my order moved incredibly slowly as did the lady who made my burrito but somehow the burrito was done a second after I finished paying. I had the no meat burrito and it is one of the better vegetarian burritos I've ever had. You get the option of whole black or pinto beans, I think the default is probably refried? You can also ask for hot sauce inside. I got my no meat burrito with black beans, rice, cheese, guacamole, lettuce (I asked for no sour cream). It was a very filling burrito that perfectly satisfied my burrito craving. There wasn't an excess of any one ingredient and the hot sauce definitely added a kick. A Bad First Impression I'm a nice guy (if you don't believe me, I'm going to cut you so bad), and I would normally give 3 stars, but I just can't do it. I'm not going to get emotional. THAT'S NOT MY STYLE!!! I'm simply going to provide some info and recount what happened yesterday. I had lunch with my friend Suyon. Happy Burrito 2 is actually just 2.5 blocks away. We didn't know that there were 2 locations in February, and so we failed to meet up (Suyon is so wonderful that she waited outside Happy Burrito 2 for over 20 minutes- most women wouldn't have wanted to meet me for lunch at all). Because of what happened, we exchanged some emails this week emphasizing that we were going to the Happy Burrito on WEBSTER STREET. We were both running late (we met outside at 12:17), and, as I expected, there was a line out the door (a few people had to get past us while exiting). To my surprise, though, this place isn't the hole in the wall that I thought it was. There are only 3 tables by the counter (the seating capacity is 10), but there's an adjoining room that features about 10 tables (the seating capacity is about 40). I love Mexican food, but I'm a picky eater. When I order a burrito, I want it with meat and cheese only, and with rice and beans on the side. You would be amazed at how hard this is to understand (cashiers often look at me as if I'm speaking in another language). I always have to repeat myself, and my order is usually messed up anyway. That's what happened yesterday. My cashier was quick overall, but not with me. I had to repeat myself a few times (it took me 2 minutes to order, and I think the guy behind me could tell that I was getting frustrated- the steam coming out of my ears may have tipped him off). I also had to speak up or I might not have received rice and beans at all. The cooks messed up too. I said that I didn't want guacamole, but my burrito had some. I also noticed that my tortilla was cold. You're given numbers, but there's no intercom system here. A woman who doubled as a cashier/cook had to tell us that our food was ready. It may have been sitting out a little (the cooks were working hard, and so our food was ready in only about 3 minutes). I also got a 20 oz. bottle of 7UP, and my total was $9.98. I wasn't given a receipt, but it's clear that I was charged about $2 extra because of my request. Confusing Cashier: What was also baffling is that the cashier made it sound like I would receive 2 plates if I had the rice and beans mixed together (this is what I decided on), and 3 if I wanted them separate. No. I received my Super Burrito and container of rice and beans on 1 plate. The portions aren't that large here. I know that my request threw him for a loop, but the man came across as incredibly dense, and I even had a hard time getting through to the cashier/cook (I explained what I wanted again when I brought my burrito back, but it wasn't until she stopped by our table that she finally understood- when it was ready, she went out of her way to tell me that my new burrito was nice and hot). I was too scared to take a close-up of Suyon's burrito. She asked for black beans (she was also happy that she could get a wheat tortilla), and, because of how runny the refried beans are here, her burrito looked like it was full of oil sludge. The Orcs from Middle-earth would have been pleased, but Suyon didn't finish her burrito, and only found it to be okay. Suyon also didn't like that her burrito had sour cream and lettuce (she was surprised). She wanted to look at the menu again, and feels that it should clearly tell you what you're getting (I agree- I'm very clear when I go to Mexican restaurants because I know that I'll probably be surprised otherwise). To cap things off, I was disappointed with my food (I didn't even finish my 7UP until later). My Super Burrito was long, but not "super" in size. I was excited to see that I could order carnitas, but my meat didn't quite look or taste right. It wasn't bad, but it could have been more flavorful. I liked my cheese and tortilla, and was glad that my carnitas were so lean (I didn't have any fat to deal with). Although they're runny, the refried beans here taste fine. My rice was good, but it wasn't the best I've ever had. I apologized to Suyon (we first thought about eating here almost 1.5 years ago). To her credit, she only yelled at me for an hour (get real). Instead of Mach 3 (I'm a very fast walker), I walked back to work at a speed of Mach 2. In other words, my food made a dent, but didn't really fill me. Never once did she greet me. Of course I was completely shocked and stated, "ok. I was just asking a question." Okay, so this is small, local, cheap tex mex style burrito joint located in what could arguably be called a greasy spoon. It's not really dirty, but it's definitely a faded, jaded kind of lunch joint. There is a small surface parking lot next door, more surface lot options close by, and the never really available street parking. Most of the lunch crowd-which is the main business of this place-just walks in from nearby. If you have time, I'd recommend strolling around a bit. there are some epic murals on webster and thereabouts. There are two seating areas-one by the front counter which fills up quick and can get very busy, and a secondary section away from the kitchen prep and ordering area. This one tends to be less busy. The secondary section sports a window seat, some restaurant storage, the bathrooms, and a painting of ho chi minh. Nobody knows why. That secondary dining area also just about doubles the size of the place. If you are here for lunch, that's a good bet to sit at, ho chi minh notwithstanding. There is not a lot to the menu-it's various burrito options, quesadilla, and nachos fixin's. The sauces are super spicy, and even with the new pricing it's entirely possible to get a fully tricked out veg burrito and a drink for about six bucks. It's delicious. Meat items cost a dollar or so more across the board, but a there is absolutely nothing wrong with a less then ten dollar lunch. The veg items here tend to be a better then the meat choices, so vegetarians are totally in luck . Food is made to order by some super fain old ladies, and comes out hot and fresh and is totally one of the best lunch options around. You order will be called out when ready-there is no table service-and you'll be frowned at when asking for extra salsa/sauce on general principle. There is a five dollar minimum for card paying folks, and since the card processing machine is not as fast as anyone would like (especially the people behind you in line) you'll prolly be stepping to the side while the cashier keeps taking orders while processing. Ordering is done when upon entry, as the cashier is right by the door. There's a line within 30 minutes of opening, but it moves fast enough for you to get in, out and back to work within an hour. One of the better lunch options if you are working nearby, and a great lunch option even if you are not. read more
