I'm new to Texas. One thing I love is Texans love their chicken and they do it right! This place is always fresh, crispy, and hot. The service makes it even better! I talked to a young lady named Esther and just like in the Bible, she's a true queen of the people! I tend to ask a lot of questions since I'm new to the area, and she was so patient and friendly. She even told about the other locations for Happy Chicks since I'm not always in this area. She was a true joy to talk to! The only complaint I'd have is the inside was very hot! That A/C must have been fighting for it's life. I thought about sitting inside - the keep the place nice and clean, but the heat! Another chicken place. Everybody striving to be next Chicfila. Nothing wrong with that. This place is on my way to work everyday. Finally tried it. Didn't realize how small this place is from inside. Seemed likes walking into a tiny restaurant . Never the less I ordered spicy chicken tenders with fries and asked for a second order of side as fries too. Order came out pretty fast. Chicken was hot and fresh and juicy. Fries were hot and fresh as well. Had jalapeño ranch dipping sauce which was ok not to drool over. My first time here but they messed up my order as I had asked for fries but they gave me Mac n cheese instead. Also had asked for spicy chicken and they gave me regular chicken. Luckily I checked the order before I left the parking lot. They were kind enough to correct the order and didn't give me hard time. Courteous employee at the front register. My chicken was cold. What the heck? I paid ~$13 for cold chicken- I do not recommend.

So this used to be our favorite place when they first opened. They are close to our house, the food was good and the customer service experience was good, sometimes even great. Currently, the food has been lackluster and there is an employee there at the counter who always has an attitude, is short, not helpful, and seems generally upset to even be working. Every time I go, I hope I don't see her and there she is in all her pouty glory. Not sure her name but she was there Weds, June 8, around 5:30 PM. When I mentioned I placed an order online, she simply pointed to the table with bags on it, didn't bother asking a name or trying to help. Also, didn't have cups ready for the drinks we ordered. If we hadn't asked she wouldn't have bothered. Will stop tipping in advance for online ordering especially if this is the low-level service we are going to receive. Several things here. And three stars bcuz I'm a nice person. There was no one at the front greeting so we didn't really know what we were supposed to do. The food is good but kinda overpriced. When our table needed things there wasn't staff really around. We needed napkins and had to ask. My friend didn't get her drink and had to get up to ask for it, and was given a kind of unwilling attitude. There are staff here but they kinda just stand around in the back. Pretty impressed with the chicken wrap that I ordered. The chicken didn't feel overly fried and there was a good balance of lettuce in the wrap. Since our first visit we went in. Guy behind the counter was super helpful and patient as we checked out the menu. We ordered the jumbo chick to share and it was a perfect size. Chicken was hot and crispy. Spice was just right (we got spicy and thought it was perfect). Sides of corn and mac n' cheese were both great. Fries hot and crispy. Was on Burnet doing business and got hungry. I was looking for a good place to grab a bite in a safe way. I happened by this place and pulled in. It's small. Like, no bathroom small. The menu is simple and limited. They seem to be more of a fried place, but they did have a grilled option and they have salads. So for those of us that are health conscious that was a blessing. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich which came with fries. I'm not big on fries, but sucked it up and went with it. After ordering I got my water and went outside to sit on the patio. It was a gorgeous day and I was the only customer. So no worries of COVID being sucked up my nostrils. My sandwich was good, but they only put lettuce on it. I had to go back inside and ask for onion. The chicken was grilled perfect. Nice and juicy. The fries were actually good also. Nice and crispy. I only ate a couple of them though. Tried this little spot with my dad after he read the chronicle and saw it was one of Austin's top chicken places. They've got a small menu, but 15 types of sauce to choose from. The inside smelled a little funky (like eggs) which is strange because I didn't see anything with egg on the menu. But luckily they had a nice patio so we ate outside. We love Happy Chicks! We are so glad to have found this place, the chicken is juicy and the pieces are large. I always get the nuggets and my husband likes to get the tenders. The french fries are not your typical fries, they are seasoned which gives them a little extra something. The nuggets are always crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. They also have bacon mac and cheese as well as cream of corn for sides. They are both good, but decadent in my opinion so I have to be in the mood for it. The butter cake though is good, but I try not get it every time because well that wouldn't be good. This place has you seat yourself, use a QR code for a menu and then place your order yourself on your phone. I usually don't mind this, it speeds up the process when you are trying to pop in while hopping around. Problem is that you are forced to pick your tip at a "sit down" place before knowing what service will be like. It defaults to 20% tip, when you have sat yourself, placed your own order and the server is essentially just a food runner that will bring your chicken strips out when they are ready. We had two margs and one chicken strip meal, it was $40 + an $8 tip making it $48. The margs were so tart that we could not finish them. The woman that made them was really sweet but we spent another $14 to get some tequila to pour in to make them tolerable. Two stars off AUTOMATICALLY for the moron tool job working the register on Sunday evening. He, a full grown adult, was wearing a kids-sized mask that barely covered his mouth and nose with the two upper strings completely detached so the whole thing was just hanging loosely off his face. This is seriously the ONLY place in Austin where we have seen such flagrant disrespect for customers' safety since Covid reopenings--and we dine out a lot. If that guy is the manager, god help this place; if not, then personnel needs a serious adjustment. We had bad tastes in our mouths after that, so were going to be down on the food anyway, but this is an honest review in saying that it's not bad--it's just not particularly good. Tortilla soup was barely warm and had the biggest pieces of bell pepper we've ever seen in a soup. The ATX salad was fine but consisted of canned/bagged stuff thrown together. "The Classic Chic" did not impress because the nuggets themselves were bland and there was absolutely no distinction between the regular and spicy ones (not that the genius behind the register who ran our food made an effort to point out which nuggets were what). We did enjoy the fries quite a bit and the mac-n-cheese and creamed corn were solid. This would have been three stars if not for the staffing issue, but it's two now. In the context of "chicken alley," this is probably one notch above Flyrite and several below Lucy's or T22. We will never return. read more

Hey vegans and vegetarians, this review is for you! I tried their vegan nuggets and vegan ranch with fries because as a girl who grew up in WV I was raised on the delicious pairing of fried chicken with ranch dressing. When I first saw this place I wondered if it might be vegan because of the "happy" part, and it's Austin with loads of vegan options. While I discovered that they're not exclusively vegan, they do have vegan nuggets and strips. Like I said, I went for vegan nugget and fries and tried the vegan ranch. Both were very good. I will say, I don't grade vegan food on a curve (at least not much of one), though, so it's not five stars. The real version of both can be better (but they can also be way worse). The fries have a bit of a salty-sweet thing that I'm not sure how I felt about, if I'm being honest. Anyway, if you're vegan or vegetarian and miss your old friend chicken nuggets, come here. I'm going to be one of the outliers on this place. There are things I like, but the negatives were a lot to overcome. Positives. The staff is super nice and very willing to accommodate special requests and substitutions. Mixing the different kinds of chicken tenders between spicy and regular? No problem. Substitute a side? Again, no problem. And the tenders themselves are first rate. Clearly quality and the taste and texture are absolutely on point. And I really enjoyed the pineapple sweet and sour sauce, which had a great Asian flavor without overwhelming the chicken. But let's talk about a couple of the flaws which were really noticeable. First, like others have noted, the space inside is limited. Second, there's no sweeteners or lemon/lime for the unsweet tea. Third, like others have noted, the fries' seasoning is definitely sweet and takes away from the taste. I also didn't like the bacon mac and cheese, which I expected to love. There was a very strong creamy flavor and not much of either a cheese or bacon flavor. When you combine that with the chives all over the top, the bacon mac and cheese comes across as an attempt to be too sophisticated and failing to execute. And the final straw for me was the price. $14 for three chicken tenders, two sides (all of the entrees come with two sides), and a drink is just way too much money for a fast food option. Even more so when there's a failure to execute. I WANT to like, if not outright love, this place. But the failures past the excellent service and chicken tenders just can't justify it. read more

I was having one of those days where I'd been nonstop busy and had yet to eat by the time 2:30pm rolled around. Let me tell you -- this meal was a spiritual experience on this day. I ordered the Classic Chick which is a larger meal than the Happy Chick which is what I would normally order. I got a text that my order was ready about 10 minutes before I got to the restaurant. Speedy! However, the hanger in me was nervous the food would be cold by the time I got it home.... WRONG. Everything was still hot and fresh. The chicken was crispy and juicy, fries perfectly seasoned, and the mac and cheese is always the main event in my eyes. Needless to say, my hanger quickly turned to bliss and then to coma. One of the best things about Happy Chicks is the number of sauces the offer. They have a sauce for everyone! I really enjoyed the vegan tenders. They are made from tofu and have the taste and consistency of Wheatsville's popcorn tofu, but more of a tender-style crust.
