I rarely write reviews, but today's experience was disappointing enough that I felt compelled to share it. As an Assistant Manager with Glide's Journey Home Program, I spend my days working alongside people who are often overlooked or marginalized. Because of that, I pay close attention to how people are treated. Today, an unhoused woman asked if I would buy her a maple doughnut. I happily agreed, and we walked into your shop together. She politely asked the employee twice whether the maple doughnut contained cream. He looked directly at her but didn't answer. After the second time, I asked, "Excuse me, is there a problem? Did you hear her?" Only then did he respond. When we went to pay, the cashier held the doughnut back instead of simply handing it to her while I completed the transaction. I understand businesses have payment policies, but the overall interaction felt cold, dismissive, and unnecessarily demeaning from beginning to end. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. It costs nothing to acknowledge someone, answer a simple question, or extend basic kindness. I chose to take my business elsewhere because I refuse to support a business where compassion appears to depend on who is standing in front of the counter. I sincerely hope the owners reflect on how customers--especially those who are unhoused or otherwise vulnerable--are treated. A little humanity goes a long way. read more

Super convenient stop and classic neighborhood donut shop with coffee and that real local feel, where regulars greet the owners like "Mama and Pa." Simple, fresh, and no fuss. Save your money and skip this place. I arrived at 11:00 a.m. with no line and only two employees working. One employee looked directly at me, then picked up her phone and started a conversation on speakerphone. The other employee was making sandwiches. I stood there for 11 minutes without a single greeting, acknowledgment, or offer of service from either employee. I eventually walked out. Good donut and coffee shop with donuts and more, including some Asian drinks. The shop seems family owned and a little disorganized (some boxes lying around). But the food and coffee were good (I didn't order the donuts, I ordered the lox), and everything was efficient. No complaints and would recommend for a quick breakfast or bite. read more

It's not everyday that one would find themselves by this particular street corner, but as someone who pops around almost every corner of the city due to work, I happened across Happy Donut while doing deliveries and became curious. Very much a little hole in the wall with boarded up covered windows, one wouldn't expect much, and once inside, I found that this was very much a simple and bare bones business. A glass case which housed numerous donuts, and an old fashion style menu on the wall behind the counter. I noted my favorite was sitting behind the case, which is a good go-to to judge a donut shop on, and that is the simple glazed old fashion donut. I also noted that they had my favorite drink as an option on the side, Thai iced tea! I couldn't resist. The Thai iced tea I was pleased to see was not a powder mix like some cheaper donut shops do, but actual brewed Thai tea with the pour in milk. It proved to be delicious! The donut was perfectly done and not overly sweet like some can make them. I also noted that the owners, an older Asian couple were very polite and nice, which made it all that much better. I now find myself stopping by this place everytime I'm in the area, and each time it doesn't disappoint! The sandwiches are also very filling although slightly on the higher end side of price. The blueberry cake, maple old fashioned, and buttermilk glazed are excellent! They can make espresso! The staff are super nice and hardworking! The general vibe of this part of San Francisco is not great, and as others have mentioned the exterior of the store has a boarded up look, but if you are in the Union Square neighborhood and need a cheap and good morning or afternoon pick me up, this is the spot! read more

Picked up some chocolate-covered raised and glazed donut holes for the kiddos. Classic-ly delicious. More importantly, the ladies working there were friendly and very kind. Nicely located super quick walk from Nikko Hotel! I got the hugest breakfast sandwich I've ever had and it was amazing! I mean what else is there to say it's a no frills donut shop with affordable prices especially being in San Francisco. It was 10am and I was thinking breakfast food or a sandwich would fuel me for the day. After researching various spots and being turned off by $17+ basic egg and toast breakfasts and deli shop sandwiches I took to the streets blindly and gazed upon my answer to an affordable breakfast. The sweet couple that run the place were kind and joked with each other in their native language. They seemed very happy to be working. Came out to $12.50 for a bahn mi and drip coffee. Is there a better deal in the city for a bahn mi? Absolutely, however I was on foot and not trying to walk far to save a few bucks. They even threw a few donut holes for free. I must say the woman at the counter was very rude and short. I stopped by while walking around while staying at the Parc 55. I wanted some coffee initially and their coffee pricing was great and the size was better than the hotel. The staff were friendly and I ended up getting coffee there every morning during our vacation. don't let the boarded up windows stop you from stopping by.
