Flavors are sweet, fresh, rich, and unique, but not overpowering. The cold brew is also very refreshing. The owner is very nice and friendly. He deserves the world! There's no indoor seating but that doesn't matter--eat it at the tables outside, or take it to outside the Ferry Building and watch the water move. This also the place you grab a quick lunch or sweet treat. A week away from the start of Chinese New Year the donut shape ring is considered good luck which symbolizes coming full circle. These donut shops have Happy in their namesake like in Happy New Year. The place for these donut rings is called My Happy Donut. On a Winter stroll in the border of Chinatown and North Beach where you can find a croissant as flakey as most in SF. Stepping inside My Happy Donut you feel transported to an old San Francisco vibe which was carefree. This place has one pastry which is one of my favorites and that is a fritter. Apple fritters are sold all around the city but my new favorite is the Blueberry fritters. They were not too sweet and the blueberry balances it out with the thick savory dough. I also like getting eating the donut holes. They also serve Vietnamese coffee along with cheesy breakfast sandwiches. Located in a pretty busy part of town, you'll need have some trouble with parking but if you're commuting through public transportation or taxi services, it won't be too big of a hassle. If your eyes haven't already set on their pastries visible from the front, their cannoli, cakes, biscotti and gelato might! The cannolis are delicious and taste extremely fresh. You won't have many options with it but their two standard flavors are just as good. The cream filling is not too sweet and has great texture and the shell is crispy and buttery. The biscotti are the next big section of their store that will catch your attention. At least 10 different flavors of cookies and biscotti are up for grabs - aside from your typical chocolate, almond and anise, you'll find other nuts like pistachio and fruits like cherries showcased. As all biscotti, they're a bit tough to bite into but these crumble just enough to give you that burst of flavor in each chomp. Their gelato selection is small but with it, Mara's got a bit of something for everyone! For coffee lovers, they have a full espresso menu and I'm sure they'll be open to making whatever ratio of milk and foam you're looking to drink if they're not too busy. The place is average in noise level as the place can be quiet at times but when the crowds come, they come in droves. For those who are simply looking to grab and go, this will be perfect on the weekdays and when timed right on the weekends. Overall, Mara's does a fantastic job representing their Italian heritage and baked goods. I heard that sometimes they sell out and close the shop early, but thankfully they still had bagels and gold standard baguettes ($6) left. We got there around 1:30 on a Friday afternoon. Service was friendly and welcoming. There were only a few people in line, also there to pick up baguettes. Glad we were able to snag one before they were gone! I also got an everything bagel and a cinnamon raisin bagel ($2.95/each). The bagels were a bit pricey for the size. Inside, you'll see sheet pans of baked goods being made fresh! I think all the sweet pastry was gone by the time we got there. Sadly, we didn't see any biscottis, spumoni or rainbow cookies. When we got home, we sliced up half of the baguette and toasted in the oven. It had a nice sourdough flavor (not too sour). Best eaten that day! After a few days, it can get hard. But if you can't finish it all, it makes great croutons for salad! That's what we did. It was crispy and very yummy! The bagels were also good and had a nice chew. Though the size of the bagel isn't quite like the ones you'd see in New York. But the texture was close! I had a Gobbler for lunch, a sandwich complete with cranberry sauce, and ordered a variety of pastries for the evening and the plane ride home the next day! I was surprised to see flakey croissants in SF and cinnamon rolls were Gluten free that didn't taste like pizza cardboard. The cinnamon roll was actually not too sweet but a bit flakey. You will also find gluten free pasta like the three cheese ravioli. You can also get cheese bagels and biscuit sandwiches which are gluten free. This is the spot where you can eat for free in SF, which means it's all gluten free. Croissant: A perfectly simple, yet complex, breakfast treat. Just loved pulling apart the flaky layers one bite at a time. So airy. Ham & Egg Croissant: A complete breakfast that can be held in one hand! Crispy croissant flakes jetting out of the top. A ham pouch that holds an egg. The egg is somewhere between runny and hardboiled; I think the term is "jammy egg". I do like the texture and taste contrasts throughout, but the bottom does feel a bit intense. The dough is denser and moister and the majority of the egg yolk is there. Ham + Gruyere Stuffed Pretzel: I'm a big fan of pretzel rolls, so kudos for the malted and salted exterior. The ham and cheese filling felt a bit skimpy though, seemed like I had eat through 1/3 of the roll until I found any. It was tasty combo for sure, just wish there was more of it. Mushroom Stuffed Pretzel: Much more filled than the ham + gruyere pretzel. Like the top actually broke a bit with mushroom filling overflowing. I liked that it was a granule mushroom paste instead of mushroom pieces. Lots of great umami, pairing nicely with the pretzel bun. Salmon Tart: I was a little hesitant to have room temperature fish that's been sitting on a pastry for some unknown interval. But my curiosity triumphed over my apprehension. Turned out to be really delicious! Flaky pastry shell and whipped herb cheese with some browned lox on top. Passionfruit Puffin: Before ordering, I had to confirm that no puffins were harmed to make this. Thankfully it's vegetarian, completely puffin-free despite the name. It's like a croissant in a muffin shape filled with tons of sweet cream filling! Like seriously, the stuffed pretzel could learn a thing or two about filling size. Pistachio Bostock: Like fluffy pistachio paste toast, with some tangy fruit jam. But it wasn't spread-to-order, it was baked on. A really delicious breakfast food; wishI brought coffee with me for this. Strawberry Lavender Danish: A very generous amount of fresh strawberries, baked slightly, into a croissant-like danish dough.
