It's been ages since we had legitimatePeruvian food and are so excited we found this place. It's non-descript, in a shopping center so don't be put off. The interior is cozy and calming. Had the ceviche mixto and mixed seafood Peruvian fried rice. It wasn't inexpensive, but nothing is these days. At least you will feel better knowing you had a good value and excellent quality. Portions were huge and ingredients fresh. Most desserts weren't made in house but made by a Peruvian woman locals Andy he chocolate passion fruit cake was divine and beautifully plated. I had been craving Happy Fish's scrumptious lomo saltado the last few weeks and arranged to meet a food friend there tonight for dinner! Not only is this Peruvian dish a sleeper but their staff and manager are so hospitable! Definitely worth the over half hour drive there. My go-to dish is served with a generous portion of well seasoned, tender beef on a bed of onions and French fries - soaking up the beef juices with a fluffy mound of rice. My dinner date had the Tallarin Verde Con Lomo Pesto with beef, served with potato wedges (she really loved the potato wedges ). After dinner the owner sent over a popular Peruvian dessert, Picarones. They're fried sweet potato dough, deep fried like a donut. Served with mamey ice cream and whipped cream! I feel like I need to also mention the chow mein noodles served with a spicy cream sauce when you first sit down is pretty yummy, unexpectedly yummy! I can honestly say, I'd eat Happy Fish Tampa lomo saltado once a week if I lived closer! Such bold beefy flavor complimented with the au jus soaked fries- perfection! read more

To be honest, this isn't my favorite Peruvian Restaurant in Tampa, I am from Peru, so I can give an honest opinion. However, the staff is so kind. The food would receive 3-4 stars, but the people who work here have proven to make this restaurant an enjoyable place to visit. We had a ceviche mixto, the flavors were on point, but the octopus in the ceviche didn't impress me ‍ the papa a la huancaina didn't taste very fresh, the aji de gallina looked too yellow, but it tasted good, the saltado mixto was my favorite. This was a gem of a find. One of the best places I have eaten at in a long time and look forward to going back when I am back in town. It is tucked away in a strip mall next to a grocery store, but doesn't matter if the food is this good. There were so many great things I didn't know what to get. I ended up trying the mixed ceviche and the seafood soup (Chupe de Mariscos). Both were great. the soup was one of the best soups I have ever had. The ceviche was also perfect. Ugh. Weird place.... And it smells bad in there. It's hard for me to enjoy my time when it smells awful. Our server had zero personality and he barely spoke and showed zero emotion. We were a table of 10, and the only table in there. He brought out one dish at a time and it took about 10 minutes so people's food got cold. Everything I tried wasn't good, I just don't understand the positive reviews! It's in a pretty sketchy strip mall. The owner (I think) came around at the end of the meal and he was very nice and friendly which is why I'm giving it 2 stars. But they have a lot of work to do if they want to make it! read more

Finally got to try Happy Fish and overall was very pleased! The service was top notch. Very helpful and friendly staff. We had the tostones acebichados (green plantain cups stuffed with ceviche) and the jalea mixta - which is a main, but we were a larger group so we decided to share, as an app. Both were delicious. The ceviche was super fresh and flavorful. Also loved the sauces the tostones came with. The jalea mixta was my favorite thing we ordered. Everything was fried to perfection and seasoned well. Super tasty. For mains we tried to churrasco, lomo saltado, saltado especial, whole fried fish, and pescado a lo macho. Everyone enjoyed their meal for the most part, but both the saltado dishes and the pescado a lo macho were a bit on the salty side. My only critique is that the space is pretty small and it was kind of difficult to walk to the bathroom located in the back of the restaurant. This is only my second time eating Peruvian food so I wasn't sure what to expect but I was super pleased with everything! The restaurant has a great ambiance, it's not tacky or pretentious. I think they did a great job of creating a great atmosphere to enjoy your meal. The ceviche was amazing! The right amount of acidity with various textures created by the yuca, sweet potato and corn. I'd eat thy everyday if I could :) The entrees were gigantic! I was not expecting it to be that large, I ended up taking most of it home. In terms of flavor, the food looks rich because it's drenched in sauce but it was the perfect balance. I couldn't stop eating but my pants was starting to get super tight. The Peruvian purple corn juice is worth mentioning. It's unlike anything I've ever had. It's sweet and spicy similar to chai tea, that's the best comparison I can make but it's definitely something you must try for yourself. Owen, the server who helped us was great! Really attentive and explained things really well (he has a heavy accent but nothing I can't decipher since I have an accent too) The prices may seem high but compared to the portion size I don't think you'll be dissatisfied. All in all Happy Fish is a must try for those of you looking for something different yet familiar. read more

CHEF IS NOT PERUVIAN!. unfortunately the food was a huge disappointment. out of 6 dishes, only 1 was good/okay. 1.CEVICHE , was bad, way too salty and couldn't even eat it. 2.SECO de carne, the taste was off and the meat too dried. My wife usually loves this dish and she was very let down. 3.ANTICUCHO, too tough and dried as a rock . My daughter got tired of chewing. 4.CHAUFA de pollo. This was the only dish the came out good, how is supposed to be. 5.TALLARIN VERDE. bad, the taste of the cheese is too strong that it kills the basil/spinach flavor of the base. 6. PESCADO FRITO. this was just fried, breaded fish fillet with white rice. no distinctive taste here. Being Peruvian I had to ask the personal how is the food so bad. I found out the cook is from central America, not a Peruvian chef. Totally makes sense now why the taste was off on almost everything we ordered. it's sad because the service is Great and the place is been decorated nicely. Totally let down by the food. I was craving lomo saltado and Happy Fish did not disappoint! It was the first time trying this place and we really enjoyed everything. We ordered the lomo, tallarin saltado de pollo, side of plantains, and yuca con mojo. There was so much flavor in all the dishes. There was one happy mistake- the yuca. On the menu it says the yuca con mojo is fried-it was not; however, the mojo was so delicious I didn't even mind! It was vinegary, salty, and just full of flavor. I normally HATE boiled yuca, so that says a lot. When we were looking on the menu so many dishes sounded delicious, so we're looking forward to trying more in the future. read more

Let me start by telling you what we ordered: Papas a la Huancaina (4/5) delicious sauce!, Lomo Saltado (4/5) amazing seasoning, beef was tough in some spots but fries were on point too! Ceviche mixto (4/5) pretty salty but maybe that's just me, Chicha Morada (5/5) rey this!!! The Ceviche mixto was really good although maybe I'll stick to the normal fish ceviche next time. It surprised me how they only have one flavor of ceviche, but their menu is the Peruvian bible of food, it has sooooo many good dishes that I need to come back and try. Service was pretty good, I think the owner or the manager kept checking in on everyone making sure everyone was happy. The decor of the place is beautiful! I was craving good Latin food and this place came up on Yelp close to my Airbnb. The restaurant seems very clean and well maintained, which is a good sign. I am not so familiar with their food but I remember down in Miami, I had Pescado ala macho and it was so good. So I decided to try the same dish here, and my husband went with the waitress' recommendation Lomo Saltados. The one I had in Miami had a creamy orange sauce and I loved it. But here it was more like red broth, which was still really good but I prefer more creamy style. Nonetheless the seafood in the broth was very good, especially the fried white fish and they do not skimp. Lomo Saltado was okay, honestly I had much better ones in Hawaii for some reason. Beef was kind of tough, and Lomo Saltado has to have tender beef for me to really like it. The service was great and I wish I could have tried ceviche since their seafood was awesome! read more
