The food. It is all about the food here. We have eaten Cuban and Peruvian all over the US, including a heavily Latin corridor where we used to live in Northern New Jersey. This place is the best, far and away. Their seasoning and flavors are what set it apart. The decor is not good. The location is not great. The wine offerings are very limited (pre-packaged plastic cups of wine). Etc. BUT, the food is incredible and why you should come eat here. Service is excellent, very attentive and courteous. During their visit, family members talked about how much they loved their trip to Peru. When it was time for them to leave I googled restaurants near the airport and Happy Fish came up. We all were so glad we found this great restaurant. Wilmer waited on us. He was so attentive and helpful and offered several suggestions. What a pleasure to have such good service. We started with a Pisco sour, first time I had ever had one - was not disappointed. Appetizers were delicious as well. All of our meals were served quickly and very generous portions. The Food is usually good especially the Fried Fish which you'll never see on the menu. So, you have to ask them each time if they can cook a whole Fish for you. They have only cooked a whole Snapper each time I've asked. It comes in different sizes and also comes with two sides of your choice. I do like all the decor which definitely represents and having live music on Fridays/Wkends. The only thing I didn't like in the past is that twice when I had actually sat down to eat inside the place once with an acquaintance and second with friends and we had already paid their Wait staff for our meals, there's this one guy that would run up to us once we're out the door asking us if we had already paid. What happened with asking the person who was serving our table first if we had actually paid and that that person had already taken our payment(s). What type of wait staff do they have working here that doesn't know if their customers even paid or not for the Tables Assigned to them. That turned me off from going back for awhile especially even bothering to eat inside again. So, beware once you pay for your meals make sure you definitely get a copy of your Bill to prove to this guy that "Yes" you did already pay and to quit harrassing you about not paying.This place needs to get better Wait Staff that actually pay attention to what they're doing and which of their tables have already paid their Bill. read more

Tonight we had the arroz chaufa di mariscos. It was seafood in a seasoned rice. They eliminated the muscles since I was allergic to them, and gave us shrimp, fish, and calamari. The portion was huge. The flavors were nice, and the fish tasted fresh. Our second entree was loma saltados. The sautéed steak was served with tomato, onion, and herbs, then placed over French fries. This was my first time going to Happy Fish and it was amazing. My boyfriend brought me here and he came a couple years ago. The food was great, I recommend their seafood ceviche and the seafood paella. For desert we had the the short bread donuts and the chocolate mousse with con leche. The customer service was great as well our server always checked up and made sure we were good as well as the owner. Had the pleasure to speak to the owner Kevin and learned about how he bought the restaurant and what he's still doing til this day to keep the place looking as great as it is now. Phenomenal ceviche. Our first experience with Peruvian food and they did not disappoint.

I have mixed feelings about this place, so that's why its taken me so long to write a review. I keep wanting to love it, because the Owners are so nice, and they were so friendly to us when we had a UYE, but in the end, the food is always just okay. This most recent visit we had a very pleasant server who didn't speak English. We gave her our order multiple times, trying to make sure she understood. Things were definitely lost in the translation, though - my friend wanted "light" onions on her Jaleo dish, and it came with no onions at all. For starters we had plantains 4/5 and the Yuca a la Huancaina (yuca covered in a creamy, cheesy sauce), with the sauce on the side. This dish was 2/5, with the small pieces of yuca overcooked, dry, and just marginal. I had the Ceviche Mixto for my meal - I get this at every Peruvian restaurant I go to. Just a 2.5/5. The dish was a soupy mess. Plus, the fish itself didn't seem to have any flavor. The portion, including the hominy and the fried corn, was also much less generous than the other places I frequent. The onions had not been marinated long enough and had far too sharp of a bite. It was a pretty disappointing dinner. My friends dish, at $15, did not come with a single side item, so she had to order a side of corn for $4. It also did not come with any sauces, so she had to order them at $.50 each. That is bizarre to me, and a real turn-off. I might be back for convenience sake when the ceviche craving hits, but most likely I will try and visit one of my favorites. read more

Stopped here by accident when the local Puerto Rico food trucks moved. Chose this spot based on reviews. Excellent choice. Some crisps with hot green sauce to start. Had the Olluco de Pollo. Very tasty. Tomato saucy-ness. Add the green sauce for extra heat. The Lomo de Pollo was terrific. Full of flavor. Both dishes had rice in the shape of an Inca pyramid. Nice touch. Small, unassuming place I'd never go to without Yelp! Friendly staff. Food was good, we have tacu tacu lomo salteado which was OK- not too much steak, but good flavor. The rice wasn't as crispy as i like and the beans whole vs matched up to make the crispy rice crispy and creamy. The appetizer fries covered in spicy green sauce, bacon and cheese was a hit with the table. Steak palomino was basic. My back beans and rice aficionado did not feel the flavor quite met his taste expectations- felt the were bland. The especiale fried rice was the largest plate of food I have ever seen!
