Had this place for dinner the other night. I ordered the General Tso's chicken, Lo mein noodles, and Egg Drop soup. The sauce for the General Tso's chicken was the worst part. Tasted like spicy ketchup. The noodles on the other hand were absolutely great. Good garlic taste,not undercooked, definitely unique. The Egg Drop soup was lame. I really like Egg Drop, but this one wasn't good at all. Overall: the price wasn't bad, quite a bite of food (serving size), kinda bland, not sure if I'd count this place out completely, I'll have to try something different to really know. 3 stars probably a favorable review. read more

We were passing through, visiting friends, who suggested this place to us. Of The foods we all ordered and tried, everything was great. The chicken lo mein had a great taste, the wonton soup was good, the beef on a stick was delicious. The food had a very eastern American Chinese feel to it. The prices were very reasonable. Lots of food for the price. Service was fast considering they were about to close. However, I got the General chicken and the chicken was chewy. Two others in my family got orange chicken and it was chewy as well. The unbreaded chicken in the terriyaki chicken was good and tender. read more

I found Happy Garden conveniently close by and was glad to have an option that was not burgers, fries and pizza. We were the only people besides the staff once inside. The dining area was clean and tidy. It's designed for the quick in and out meal. The staff weren't friendly but not unfriendly either. I used to eat here about three or four years ago and then I moved away. I recently moved back and wanted to try them again. I ordered the pork with broccoli and it was the worst food I have ever tasted. The broccoli and sauce was fine but the pork had a very weird texture. It was like a noodle. Perhaps I could've tolerated the noodle tasting pork but it had an underlying bad seafood taste to it. It was not like meat at all I had to throw it out because of the off seafood taste to my pork noodle. I also had the meat on a stick and it was very tough and almost in edible. Food was competent but uninspired- ordered sweet and sour chicken and beef with broccoli, but the chicken didn't have any accoutrements (like pineapple or peppers) and the beef was mostly broccoli. I love this place!!!! I've only had a few of their dishes so far (moo shu vegetables and ma po tofu) but both are so good! The sauce in the ma po tofu is a little think but the flavors are excellent. From what I have tried so far, I'd say the folks saying this isn't good Chinese food don't really know what authentic Chinese food is. I spent part of my childhood living in China. My Dad is Chinese. I know real Chinese food. I've been here twice and I haven't been disappointed yet. Yes it's a "hole in the wall." Those are some of the best places sometimes!! Pleasantly surprised with Happy Garden! Americanized Chinese food - cheap and satisfying. You order and pay at the counter and seat yourself at one of the few tables in the restaurant. All four fans were on full blast and it was chilly, but the waitress turned them off when we asked. Lunch for 3 adults and a wonton soup for the munchkin ran us around $25, good value. The wontons appeared to be homemade, they were very tasty and there were enough for us all to share. Generous portions with a good meat/veggie ratio. Drinks were always refilled. If I lived closer, this would be my go-to place for Chinese food. read more

I'm not sure if it's always like this or maybe just a consistency issue. Tried Garlic sauce chicken and lo mein. Wish I would've tried the ham fried rice to help determine overall quality. The chicken tastes strange. Something about the texture. All the veggie ingredient and sauce were fine but the chicken and noodles didn't have flavor and sort of ruined the dishes. I am sad. I don't like giving middle range review much less bad ones. I generally try places that look great based on the existing yelp feedback. read more

One star...is one too many. My Husband and I went there for lunch one afternoon and neither of us could even eat our food. We're not "picky" eaters by any means. This food was literally inedible. Chicken in my chicken with broccoli was complete mushy slime, the broccoli was the same and the sauce had no taste except oil. Rice was flavorless and so was my husband's orange chicken. I was looking for a place to get some Americanized Chinese food. This place is near my house and moderately priced. I tried the beef with garlic sauce, pork friend rice, and hot and sour soup. The beef with garlic sauce was good, lots of veggies, a good portion of beef, and the beef was higher quality than you find at a lot of these mom and pops Chinese food places. The fried rice on the other hand was horrible, the rice was not fully cooked prior to being fried --- I see potential but you need to start with cooked rice (especially since you have to pay $2 extra to have fried rice). The hot and sour soup was okay - I'm going to doctor that up tonight for dinner. I noticed that their egg drop and hot and sour are kept warm by Crockpots in the restaurant, inventive, but then you know it's not freshly made. It was kind of pricey for everything, about $17. I noticed on the menu you can get 4 items (from a list of about 20), for about $24, so if I choose to come back I think that would be a better option. This is the first Chinese food I've had in ABQ, I think I'm going to keep seeking out other restaurants. read more
