We ordered takeout from Chen's on a Monday after a long day. Honestly it was a wonderful surprise to find them still in business as I first ate here in the 1980s. I was impressed then and I'm happy to say I still love the flavors. The parking lot was packed when we arrived and the restaurant was quite busy inside. Takeout was really our best option. Our order tonight was beef and broccoli, pork egg foo young, egg rolls and fried shrimp appetizer. Portions are much smaller than we get at Fai Wong which is our neighborhood favorite. However, I found the beef and broccoli from Chen's better. The broccoli was crisper and the beef flavor was intense. The egg foo young at Chen's is really an omelette with gravy. Tasty, but not what we expected. The egg rolls were some of the best we've had at a Chinese restaurant in Albuquerque. Not a lot of meat, but a really good vegetable blend with a good crispy crust. The fried shrimp appetizer was also tasty although the shrimp was a bit overcooked. Three of us dined for a bit over $50. Food was okay, nothing great. Sauces don't come with any of the appetizers. Rice and noodles were overcooked. Ambiance was odd there was no music in the restaurant so you could hear everything. Service was ok, the server dropped off the check right after she gave us our main food. Felt as if she wanted us out even though there were only two other people in the restaurant. We heard this was on the best oof 2024 so we stopped by to try it. This is an unassuming place with plenty of room inside. Every time we pass by it, we see a full parking lot. So we entered through the red doors and the service was prompt. However, the food was bland. We ordered the potstickers, the kung pao chicken, and the beef pepper steak. The potstickers had a good number of 10 pieces and the crust was crunchy. But they were unfortunately bland as well. Chen's is a humble little Chinese joint. The front door can be a little heavy so be sure to bust out your guns (arms, get it?) to get open. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles you might see at other Asian eateries, but what it does have it great Egg Foo Young! The Egg Foo Young is my favorite here. My supervisor recommended this restaurant for lunch and he was on point. I ordered the Orange Flavor chicken with fried rice, Egg drop soup, and chicken wangz. The restaurant was very clean, the staff was awesome, and the food was great. The Orange flavor chicken sauce was sweet and a little tangy which was perfect. The chicken wangz cooked perfectly, it was crispy and seasoned with love. Egg drop soup was slamming, I recommend it. The Egg Rolls were crispy, and had a good amount of filling. Not worth the money spent, ordered the pork chow fun because I love wide rice noodles and pork but there was barely any meat and the noodles were clumped together. The sauce was flavorless. First Chinese restaurant in Albuquerque I ordered Take-Out. I found the menu on Yelp and it looked ok and affordable. I ordered Ma Po Tofu ($8.95) and my SO ordered Beef and Broccoli ($9.75) because it's simple and you can't mess it up. It turned out that you can by ordering there. This experience was described by my SO. He goes to pick up the order by 15 min when it said it would be ready. The cashier lacked energy and didn't offer a bag for the boxes (we're new in town, so we're not aware that the no plastic was implemented yet). So he had to ask for one. I don't trust styrofoam boxes for saucy foods because sure enough it will spill out in the bag. When asked for fortune cookies, the cashier used her bare hands to hand him unwrapped fortune cookies... When he came home with the food, our food boxes were leaking. My Ma Po Tofu was super soft (which I liked) and was better off in a soup container. We come to find that they only gave us one box of rice for two entrées (I guess they want us to share). Our food just looked sad, but they were edible to say the least. The food didn't look like it was handled with care and lacked freshness. This is the second time I've been here this year, and I gave it a second chance because that's what I do. But the order was incorrect again. I got cheese Rangoon's instead of crab Rangoon's. The lady on the phone was very difficult to understand, and she had trouble understanding me. Barbecue pork was very dry and didn't have much flavor. I got Mushu pork and it was OK but nothing special and made an enormous mess and was so wet that the little pancake just fell apart before I even got one bite. My 1yo woke up throwing up profusely in the middle of the night, then by the time morning came I was also throwing up and unable to keep anything down not even water! I usually have more than I can eat, but they have covered plates to use for take home. Lunch meals are very inexpensive and give you a wide variety. When one thinks of Chinese restaurants, does "Ambiance" ever come to mind? Granted, there might be some awesome Chinese restaurants out there somewhere that pair good food with an awesome vibe and decor to wow over, but I've not found one. Generally speaking, they all tend to have a similar decor & vibe that does not leave a lasting impression. And Chen's is no different. In fact, that part might be a turn off for some. Lousy parking, small, VERY bright inside and the service isn't exactly stellar. We found a table and I had to gather our own place settings & menus myself. Nevertheless, that aside, the food...Wow!! I'm old, and needless to say, I've eaten at a lot of Chinese restaurants across the country, and in Asian countries to include Hong Kong. And out of all my travels, I've never enjoyed EVERY dish served. I'm sure most will agree, generally speaking, out of the three or four dishes tried at each visit, only a couple will be good, while a couple are, meh! The fried rice will be good, but the low mien will blow, or vice versa. The egg roles will be awesome, but everything else, not so much. However, in this case, EVERY dish we had on our table was indeed awesome! The beef fried rice, wow!! The beef itself was like little moist pieces of steak & very flavorful! In fact, I generally always need to douse my fried rice with lots of soy sauce, in this case, zero needed! And that's really saying something. The shrimp egg fu young, once again, wow!! I love egg fu young, but this version was really something to remember. Very large, juicy, succulent pieces of shrimp, and they didn't skimp on them either. The chicken teriyaki, primarily ordered for my daughter, was very moist and swimming in sauce. She was like a little eating machine, which is quite rare for her. And finally, the stir fried fresh rice noodles with shrimp was indeed quite memorable! Succulently sapid, with a savory sauce, and delightfully delicious! It was really good, to say the least. Decently priced and well worth many repeat visits. In fact, we're in the process of buying a house within two miles of there, so something tells me this place will aid in my expanding waistline for years to come. And one final note, I don't know if it is of any consequence, but the owner and many employees are Taiwanese, not Chinese. And I was told the owner created the menu & recipes herself. read more

Our bill was $24 for 2 meals, with only water to drink. I think it was mis-labeled in Help with only one $. The lunch specials included soup and hot tea in the $7.50 price range. So I ordered the combo which had garlic shrimp and sweet and sour pork. Seasoning on shrimp was just okay. I did like the pork. The sauce was not that bright red, overly sweet stuff that is often served at dives. My companion ate shrimp over noodles. Large dish, meant for sharing...$12.95. She said it was "ok."
