God I haven't felt this satisfied with Chinese food for so long and of all the places in Albuquerque. A sweet Chinese family greeted me and my friends at the door. That instant closeness and hospitality, in the backdrop of traditional comforting interior decor made us feel so welcome and relaxed. But the food is beyond amazing. The roasted duck is crispy and packed with flavor. Beef hot pot too, with the beef stewed to softness and soaking up the sweet and umami sauce in the pot. The tofu shines through the array of heavy hitter meaty dishes. The salted dried fish gave the tofu a funky taste and it mixes brilliantly with the rice. Pork ribs, oh my god, I can't believe of all the dishes, the easiest people pleaser won't make it to the top. Don't get me wrong, in any other scenario I'd have gone on and on about it, with that juiciness and spice but everything else is just so much sophisticated and enjoyable that I can't keep my chopsticks away from them. Back in 2009, I moved to Albuquerque and the first thing on my to-do list was to find a great Chinese restaurant because I was raised on authentic beef and broccoli with rice and Chinese food was my weakness. Well... East Ocean is TOO GOOD! My favorites then (and still today) are their BBQ pork egg foo young, ma po tofu, lemon chicken, orange chicken, and paper chicken. Their lunch specials are a little TOO affordable and the staff is so accommodating in such a beautiful restaurant that East Ocean became my weakness when I was happy, sad, and just plain breathing. Let's just say that it became noticeable how much weight I gained because I was THAT addicted. It came down to giving up my love for their food or doing something I never thought I could bring myself to do but I gave in... and joined a gym. Now I live somewhere with horrible Chinese food and let's just say it's been 5 years since I moved and I'm skinny and still in constant withdrawals. I ordered the house special ribs lunch portion by pointing at that menu item and got what I believed to be a beef & broccoli. I told the server that this was not my order. I believe there was a language barrier and I grabbed a menu and pointed to what I ordered. Another employee told me the food would be out soon. I waited longer than planned, but the food was good. We had the lobster, the sesame chicken, basically the sweet and sour deep fried braised beef(?), the steamed seabass, fried rice, the seafood soup, the cream cheese wonton appetizers, Chinese broccoli, bok choy, snow pea, whole duck (obviously all not in that order) I've had these dishes so many times before. But for some reason today, everything felt so fresh and amazing! I was raving about it with my sister, and my aunt was telling us that it is because we asked for "less salt! " (I would honestly take this comment with a grain of salt lol) Anyways, it was so much better than any other time I've ever had it before! First off, I should mention that I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food in general. Also I'm quite picky having cut my teeth on it in Boston's Chinatown. Anyway...I first tried this place as carryout during the pandemic on the recommendation of a friend. I was quite impressed with the food at the time. After far far too long, I finally went back to dine in with some friends and was so very glad I did. The food was amazing. I got the sesame balls and the vegetable lo mein. Others got the sweet and sour chicken combo and the sesame tofu. It was all amazing. The tofu came with a huge pile of broccoli cooked just right. The service was quick and the wait staff were all very friendly. My friends had a very exuberant small child who was just very excited about everything and our waitress was great about interacting with him and helping him choose his meal. The place is a bit on the smaller side and they seem to do a very good business both as carryout and dine in, so you may have a bit of a wait but it will be well worth it. My husband and I visited East Ocean for the first time yesterday and we were absolutely impressed! When we showed up it wasn't too busy... but as we were there, the traffic coming in and out of the restaurant was nonstop for pickup orders. Considering how busy it was, the restaurant was not too loud and it was warm which I was concerned about since we were by the exit. You could tell they had their regulars and I could absolutely tell why once my food came. The egg drop soup was the BEST I've ever had. It tasted savory and fresh. I ordered the orange chicken lunch special and my husband ordered the Kung Pao chicken. The food also was fresh and hot. The sauces in the food were superb! On top of the amazing food, the service was also amazing! The waitress was quick and friendly. She didn't rush us, but was quick to notice when we were ready to order! First, must say that we have lived in Albuquerque a full year now after moving here from Denver (my home for 70 years). We have explored for good restaurants since moving here - both Mexican and Oriental without much success. In looking, we have looked at reviews of all and the reviews for this one were promising, so we tried it tonight. Terribly disappointed; not only in the food but the reviewing/reviewers here. It seems to us that the people here have been raised in a gawdawful restaurant desert! My partner ordered the orange chicken, while the chicken was there it was devoid of any orange flavor. My order was for scallops and broccoli which was mainly/mostly vegetables with slices of scallops here and there. So, this was our first and last visit to this venue. My first visit to East Ocean, middle of Sunday afternoon on the 16th of June 2024. Ample parking, greeted warmly at the door, seated immediately. Decor is Asian theme and comfortable. Extensive menu! I had beef with broccoli and my husband ordered boneless ribs. Lunch specials come with a thick egg drop soup, an egg roll, and your choice of white or fried rice. My beef was a little salty, but nicely cooked with delicious tender-crisp broccoli. Hub thought his ribs were a little fatty, but they were flavorful and enjoyable. I haven't had good Chinese food since I moved here five years ago. This place has it all and is locally owned! The menu is endless and everything I've had on it is great. I highly recommend the Lo Mein, egg rolls, and Kung Pao chicken! The Kung Pao is the perfect amount of spicy. Get some rice on the side! I also enjoy the cashew chicken. This is our new go-to traditional Chinese restaurant in Albuquerque. It's exactly what I'm looking for when I want Cantonese comfort food. Everything we order was solid... most of which was from the special Chinese menu, not the regular menu. Steamed sea bass with a ginger scallion soy sauce, sautéed ong choy, seafood hot pot, roasted duck and salted fish fried rice. All this for less than $100. Another feast at East Ocean! This time, it was a birthday celebration accompanied by family and friends. Our Chinese UNM friend believes the food is the most authentic he has eaten around town. Granted he has not eaten at every Chinese restaurant, but he does like this one in particular. Crispy duck...the skin is amazingly crispy, evenly cooked, and hides the juicy meat underneath. Combination chow funn is a noodle dish that is mild but balanced and aromatic in flavor. The combo had seafood, pork, and chicken in it. The orange chicken are chunks of chicken with a crispy batter and orange sauce. The batter isn't too heavy, and the sauce seems like a standard orange sauce. Our Chinese friend ordered a spicy tofu dish that had a perfect kick to it. Not overly hot to the point of sweating. Served over rice will balance that dish out by way of heat. Egg drop soup is Americanized but thick and good according to our friend. And the Jasmine tea was so lovely and fresh. It reminded me of drinking light delicate flavors of a flower garden.
