Happy and hale used to be the place to be. Used to be my go to restaurant in Durham. Man has it gone downhill. Quality has gone down, service is worse, and they removed one of the only good things on the menu (avocado toast). The portions are smaller (they are so stingy with the meat), the eggs in the scramble are always undercooked and they just seem to take less care of the customers. This place puts a smile on my face. The food is incredible and healthy. I split an acai bowl and scramble (which had quinoa in it to keep us full) with my sister and both were delicious and filling. I've visited twice now and it was good but not great. I certainly see why it does well in a busy area with people trying to eat well. It's clean, quick and easy. I wish they had a few more signature salads or a better list of all the veggies available to make your own. My first trip I had the Ahi Poke Bowl and it was just ok. There are definitely places to get a better poke bowl in the area. The dressing was strong and the proportions were just off. On my return trip I had the Thai Chicken Crunch, and that was well worth it. It was crunchy and flavorful, while the pickled carrots just made the whole thing. It was well worth the price. Today, 02/01, around 8:40am was my first time visiting the store. Before ordering, I asked the young Caucasian girl at the register about the ordering process for a bowl. So of course she provided instructions on how to order, and info on how many toppings were included. I built my entire bowl, get to the register to pay and pull out cash. It wasn't until I pulled out my cash before she advised me "we're completely cashless and only take cards". Then I look at her bewildered, because why would that not be mentioned in the beginning before I ordered and definitely before she threw the food away? I came on a Sunday night and there was only one person ahead of me. I had to wait about 5 minutes while they made her meal before my order was taken. I ordered a bowl that usually comes with chicken and cheese and I asked them to hold the cheese. My friend next to me noticed they put the cheese on my salad and so she reminded them that I said "no cheese ", they scooped it back off and finished my salad and then handed it to. They never told me what they did, nor were they concerned that I might have allergies to dairy. This in itself is good for 3 stars to be taken off! The salad itself was only fair tasting. I don't know why it's taking us so long to finally try Happy + Hale. We ordered takeout from here on a Thursday night when we didn't feel like making dinner but also weren't super hungry for a huge meal. I ordered the Hale Caesar salad which was all vegan and had coconut bacon and buffalo cauliflower on top which I was really excited about. My husband ordered a make your own topped with chicken rice lettuce and he ordered two different sauces. When I arrived to pick it up I was greeted by very friendly staff who let me know that they were actually out of tomatoes and we're at the store but if I wanted regular tomatoes instead of grape tomatoes they could still make my bowl right then. I thought it was really nice they cared exactly what you were putting into the bowl even with such a small thing as grape tomatoes versus regular tomatoes. I brought our food home and we both really loved what we got. I'm only sad that we haven't tried Happy + Hale before yesterday, but we both know we will definitely be back super soon. read more

I really want to love Happy & Hale, and my husband loves it. So clearly this place has a spot in some people's tastebud lands. But for me, I just sort of leave here feeling not satisfied. I also think this place doesn't have big enough servings sizes for dinner, but as a lunch spot, it is fast, order at the counter, and fresh and healthy ingredients. So for the salad lovers out there, this place is definitely high up on a great quick option in the durham area. Personally, I think their breakfast stuff (which most of it is the same salad and toast options but with an egg added which is honestly what I do at home to make something "brunch" add an egg!), is the way to go. The decor is nice with doors opening to a small patio space. So for a cheaper lunch/breakfast in the ninth street area, definitely a solid option. Just an option that maybe doesn't have enough flavors in it for me to eat here all the time, but then again, my husband loves this place. Stopped in to Happy + Hale to pick up some lunch. I wanted to have the Buddha bowl which I had at some point last year but it looks like they are no longer serving it (or it may be seasonal). Everyone was really friendly as it took me a bit of time to decide what I wanted. I went with a veggie bowl (can't remember the name instead). The bowl came with kale, mint, black beans, squash, beets which I replaced with sweet potato, and quinoa. I also replaced the dressing with avocado lime. The bowl was okay, but I think the mint was a bit overpowering. While I'll be back to Happy + Hale, I probably won't order this particular bowl again. read more

I work for the very large company and I understand that if they have multi- orders going to the same place it makes sense to deliver them at the same time. I get it. But, what your delivery person did, was drop off the entire order to the receptionist and leave. Since my name was at the top of the order, and she works for me, she called me to let me know my lunch was here. When I pick up my bag, I noticed it was way to heavy for just one tuna and rice. Listen, I've never done a Yelp review in years of having this app. I've been in Durham for a work trip. I've been here for 3 days and this is the best place so far. The energy is amazing everyone is so helpful. My guy pattie he is a legend, he helped me out with his knowledge of the area and just is super positive and helpful I'm very appreciative of him and the staff. Best part about starting a new job in Durham? Getting to try all the lunch spots you could never make it to! Worst part- the commute from Raleigh (but this isn't the time for that!) While I live right next to the Happy & Hale on Fayetteville Street in Raleigh I haven't had a chance to try the Durham location before now! Their location on 9th street is quite a bit different, featuring an indoor dining area and expanded menu. I tried the falafel grain bowl (something I don't think Raleigh has) and was very pleased! The portion was huge and the combination of ingredients is perfect for filling you up. I also tried the cranberry ginger lemonade which was very tasty and refreshing! The store front was clean and featured plenty of indoor and outdoor seating even with the large lunch crowd. Service was great as usual! I go to this place every so often. Every time I go here I'm satisfied with the smoothie or bowl that I order. I've only order food from here once, but I usually come for the smoothies. I've only ate that acai bow and that was delicious, adding almond butter to it is a must. The sliced bannas, acai, blueberries, chia seeds and whatever else in it, Amazing. I always order the almond brothers shake which has coffee chocolate, coffee, banna, almond butter and almond milk. It has a natural sweetness. The other shake I order is the pink drink it had so many kinds of colorful friota and healthy ingredients. Taste great too. It would be 5 stars but the price point can be lower. read more

I would put that dressing on just about anything. The salad bowl was also very hearty and kept me full for a long time. It was nice that you could swap out veggies and toppings.
