Was recommended this place by a good friend of mine for a healthy/hearty/delicious triad of a meal. I initially had major doubt because those 3 descriptive words rarely ever work symbiotically. When you walk in, you already feel cleansed - bright and tidy space with simple, succinct menu written on the wall. Specialized bowls, salads, and soups at your disposal. You can also customize your own as well. I was looking for the triad, but leaning more on the hearty aspect. I chose the CHIMICHURRI STEAK BOWL - chipotle seared tenderloin, lime herb wild rice, roasted red peppers, onions and mushroom, chipotle ranch, topped with chimichurri pesto. Can I say WOW. The blend of the different sauces meshed well together and in a way that you would taste the zing of the pesto at one time and then the cooling sensation of the ranch the next. Hearty this bowl was - the entire top of the bowl was lined with the tenderloin - nearly every bite of rice I had a slice of tenderloin to go with it. My friend and I both got the popeye+olive Quinoa bowl....yummm. it does come with feta cheese so when opting for vegan, that would be omitted. This is the place to go if you want healthy and tasty food that will really fill you up! I had the falafel grain bowl, and I was completely stuffed. The food was really flavorful and you can modify anything really, since they build it as you go down the line. Plus it's super vegetarian/vegan friendly! The decor was really minimalist with clean lines and a white and green scheme. It seems like the place was decorated so that it would look picture perfect. Okay I know I say this a lot but THIS IS MY FAVORITE TYPE OF FOOD! I love mixing things up in a bowl and this is the place to do it. If you don't like salad, think of it as being like chipotle but with more variety. They have Greek, Thai, Mexican, and American options with the choices of adding quinoa and lentils plus countless dressings and sauces. Not to mention vegan protein options, lamb meat balls and of course CHIKIN. My favorite is the Santorini. The paprika tzatziki and the curry yogurt sauces make any bowl A++++! Finally checked out the Durham location and so happy I did. I settled on the Bida bowl which is so delicious and super filling. Red coconut curry my fave with chicken, red peppers, over jasmine rice and shredded kale topped with cabbage kimchi. It was yummmmmy. If you go for lunch go a little before noon as it gets busy. "Healthy tasty salads/ bowls on Ninth Street in Durham" We came on a Friday night, and it was surprisingly uncrowded, though this was during Duke University's spring break. It's a small restaurant right next to Alpaca on Ninth Street, and one orders in line and gets their food immediately if it's a bowl not requiring cooking. The concept is simple: choose a greens/grains base then veggies then toppings then protein then dressing then garnish. In many ways, similar to Chipotle or Guasaca nearby, but focusing on salad/ grain bowls rather than burritos or arepas. Positives: + Ingredients/ Quality. Everything seemed super fresh. No wilt at all in the veggies, the chicken was high quality. I sampled a bit of the falafel, and it was REALLY good, etc. No complaints there at all. + Service. The servers seemed eager to talk with us and explain things, which was great. They did make a few mistakes in our order, but I'll put this as a positive because they dealt with it constructively & fast, fixed everything, and even offered a complimentary cookie as an apology. + Location. Ninth Street. Lots to do nearby and convenient. Nuff said. + Environmentally friendly. Nice that everything they serve in is compostable or recyclable! Neutral: +/- Ambiance. Other reviews gave it a 5/5 for ambiance or described the inside as "beautiful"- I think that's a huge stretch, but it's "fine" as casual dining. Negatives: - Price: just a little bit too high. It's all very fresh, but the setting/ atmosphere is basically hipster fast-food. There's no table service, and they're just scooping stuff out for us mostly. It's not downtown (where everything costs more). For all that, I felt my Thai Chicken Crunch bowl should've been a little bit below $12 before tax and tip. The smoothies were also a bit pricey-- someone in my group got the "Pink Drink", and while it was good, it wasn't huge yet it was still over $6 before tax and tip. It may suffer a bit by proximity to places like Cosmic Cantina and Alpaca, where one spends almost half as much for a meal. I understand that the quality here is high(er), and it's lots of fresh greens, so I get why it's more expensive than those places, but it still seemed just a little bit too pricey. Another reviewer noted the poke ended up pretty pricey, too. (I also disagree with another reviewer who said the bowls are big enough to split or be two meals-- one would have to have a pretty small appetite for that to be OK.) Synopsis: I'd come back. Upon entering into this nice quaint restaurant, we were greeted by the staff who were very friendly. It was our first time here so they gave us a run down of their menu which was full of flavorful options. Ended up having their Chimichurri Steak bowl and a create your own bowl with a mixed greens base and some of their fresh toppings. The food was so fresh and delicious. They do charge extra for every additional ingredient that you add so my two extra ingredients were charged which usually, those items are included in the price. All hail Happy & Hale! If you've seen my other reviews you know I'm a sucker for juice bars and healthy quick eats. Durham is lacking in these so when I moved here last month and found this place my heart was so happy. H&H (can we coin that as it's new nickname?) has smoothies, toasts, and bowls that will do your body good. They have pre-made recommendations for a variety of salads and protein bowls or you can choose the create-your own option. Just a few mix-ins I remember seeing through the glass included roasted brussels, quinoa, a variety of nuts, chicken shrimp, eggs, different types of greens, and plethora of yummy sauces. They also have freshly pressed juice, smoothies, and ACAI bowls. I didn't know the south knew these existed and my California heart can be made full again haha I have also tried the kale krusader juice and the Buddha Bowl (roasted brussels, cauliflower, and carrots over warm black lentils and a curry yogurt dressing) with chicken. Add the harissa sauce and get a ginger shot to go on your way out. You won't be disappointed. Another cool thing about H&H is that the owners are NC state grads that are committed to keeping it local by partnering with local urban farms which gives a little more reason to why the prices may be While I am only contracted short term in Durham for work and am not particularly invested in this area, I still think it's important we support small local businesses so do your body and community a favor and head to H&H! read more

Yes, it's pricey. Grabbing a healthy salad here can definitively break your bank but nothing beats the convenience of tossing together your favorite fresh ingredients without having to buy each ingredient separately at the grocery store. Time is money and I'm addicted. What's also great about Happy & Hale is that they are open at 7am which means I can stop by to get my salad in the morning without having to deal with the rush during lunch. And now that their old neighbors "Tijuana Flats" is closed, there's much more parking in the neighboring lot. With the exception of their Chipotle salad, I'm not really a fan of their pre-selected salads. I love creating my own though, and hopefully in the future they can add even more toppings like alfalfa sprouts! I'm so thankful of this place, as it allows me to make healthy eating decisions! read more

Absolutely amazing and unique food experience. I went here after a long day of school and work and wanted a really satisfying and filling meal after a depleting day. I was not sure exactly what to pick from the menu but I ended up selecting the "FALAFEL GRAIN BOWL." It was such a well balanced meal, the saltness from the roasted butternut squash hummus paired perfectly with the cilantro pepper vinaigrette. They have a pretty extensive menu that includes breakfast wraps, salads, and superfood bowls. There were a few reasons I could not award five stars: 1. The doors were wide open and as a result I saw many flies landing in or around the food as it was being prepared. 2. We decided to take our food to go because there were fruit flies surrounding the indoor tables as we took a seat. 3. Yum, yum, yum! Happy and Hale has become a go to for an afternoon snack while I'm in Durham. I haven't tried out the salad bar yet, but the thing looks super impressive. I always go for the smoothies. My favorite by far is the Almond Brothers, the smoothie taste much more guilty than it is (melted milkshake esq) and fills you up. I've also gotten the City of Oats, which isn't my favorite. I think the peanut butter overpowers the strawberries so peanut butter is all you really taste, the oat texture take a bit of adjusting to, but again good for filling you up until dinner time. I like the all white aesthetic of the place, with all the greenery; it feels hip, but also relaxing. Employees are always pretty friendly as well. They share a parking lot with the other businesses in that building so parking has never been an issue for me! read more

Two words: Hipster Chipotle. Now, on to the review. H&H was pretty good and overall I have no complaints. Food was pretty good and I was pretty satisfied with price, serving, and service. Nothing blew me away, nothing disappointed. I had the chimichurri steak bowl which was pretty good. Though it's hipster, it's full of preppy Duke kids, so just be aware going in. Nothing against Dukies (I am one myself), you may just have to hear them complain about not getting the exact BMW that they wanted for Christmas. Seating is also set up with large tables, so you gotta sit next to people you don't know if it's crowded. I don't know why it took me so long to try Happy & Hale, but I am very thankful that when I got out of class at Yoga Off East (which has since moved), I decided to try their food. All of their salads are freshly made by smiling, helpful folks-- my go to is the ensalada bowl and the thai chicken is my runner up. The line does get long at lunch (this seems to be a favorite for Duke students), but I was impressed at how fast they can get thru the many orders. The price was a bit high at $12 for a salad (and the smoothies were even more outrageously expensive), but sometimes that's what quality ingredients cost you. The base of the salads are the norm: mixed greens, kale, spinach, etc. IMO, it's all down here from there. For toppings you have things like sweet potato, pickled onions, pickled carrots and avocado in every possible medium. It's Forest Gump bad...smashed avocado, sliced avocado, avocado puree'. Stopped by for an açaí bowl this morning. Nice location next to Alpaca Chicken. There's plenty of street parking and a lot next to the building. Great shop, clean and fresh! Nice menu options but I was really just in the mood for an açaí bowl. They also had the dragon fruit bowl option. It included granola, coconut flakes, bananas and honey. It was a good bowl but it was really watery and I couldn't really taste the açaí. I would have also like some more coconut flakes on top. Great location, great service but a bit underwhelmed with the açaí bowl. Next time I'll look to try another one of their bowls. read more

I love this place! It's really the only place I have been to in Durham where you can get a smoothie bowl. Also, their salads are delicious, fresh, and endlessly customizable. I hope this place sticks around and continues to expand their offerings! The beverage options are also worth noting- kombucha, green tea, cold brew coffee, and a delicious (& free!) water infusion they call "happy water." While I love their acai bowl, I do wish they had more smoothie bowl options. They have a nice-length smoothie menu, so why not offer them in a bowl with your choice of toppings? I once asked to add spinach to the acai bowl and they acted very confused; then they asked me if I meant as a topping or blended in (I meant blended in, green smoothie-style). Happy + Hale is famous with their healthy bowls. You can either pick one of the bowls from the menu or make your own. They have lots of options for toppings and sauces. You can always find something according to your taste. They also have Avocado Toasts, Acai Bowls and many different smoothies. The Acai Bowls are delicious and the smoothies are great. I personally think that Happy + Hale doesn't have anything extra special but it is a place that you will always find something that you would like to eat. It was so bland that it tasted like they blended a few cups of almond milk, a handful of ice cubes, and 1 measly strawberry and decided to call it a 'smoothie.' Gave 2 stars for customer service.
