I've tried to place an order over the phone in the past and it went something like: Me: Hi, I'd like to place an order for pickup. H&H: Oh, you should just come in. Me: I can't put in an order over the phone? H&H: Let me check. (pause) Okay, what can I get you? Me: Avocado toast? H&H: We're not doing avocado toast. Me: Really? It's on the menu. H&H: Let me check. (pause) Okay, we can do it. Seriously. This happens all the time. The ordering here is so flaky, it's like they don't want any customers. I often seek out restaurants like this when I travel. I don't understand why Asheville (my home) doesn't have any spots like this. I loved my experience at Happy & Hale and if I lived in Durham, this would definitely be a weekly meal for me. I love their awesome menu but I especially love the build-your-own bowl option. Today I ordered kale crunch, quinoa, sweet potatoes, falafel, black beans, guac, pita crisps and pickled onions with chipotle ranch and it was freakin delicious! I ate every last bite. I was really looking forward to trying this place! I tried to go the day before at about 6pm but they were closed even though the website said they close at 8. I called before going in yesterday to be sure they were open and the girl who answered the phone said they're open til 8 but might close sooner, without saying when that might be or why that might occur (she sounded like she just didn't really care). I found it a little messy in there and the staff seemed pretty nonchalant. Now please understand that I've worked in many service positions, so I understand what it is to feel maybe tired, stressed or annoyed etc. However, I believe in providing excellent customer service ESPECIALLY at a place with "Happy" in the name! What I received was lackluster/fair at best--like my order was an annoying task to complete. I tried the Kale Caesar bowl and it was alright. I'll probably forego the coconut bacon next time as for me the flavor took away from others present. This is my first time trying a Happy and Hale store. The interior was clean and bright. The staff was friendly and helpful. I opted for the incredibowl after reassurance that it was a good choice by the staff. I added tofu as a protein for $2 extra. The bowl was pretty sizable. Definitely filling with all that kale and quinoa. They have smoothies and drinks. Definitely felt I had a positive experience and will be frequenting them again. A tip would be to get the sauce on the side. I had it on the salad, and with so much kale and quinoa, I felt there wasnt enough sauce/dressing so I was eating some parts dry. But honey, the cauliflower is everything - is this healthy??? It can't be all crunchy and tasty and good for you. The buffalo sauce if flavorful but could use a bigger bite. This is one of my favorite places to pop in for a quick and relatively cheap (~$10) meal. I prefer to do the build-your-own bowl, where you pick a base of greens and/or grains, 3 veggies, a protein, and a mash. It's Chipotle-esque counter service, so you just point to what you want and watch them assemble it. I always get the cold Thai sesame chicken, which is so flavorful that I can skip the salad dressing. All of the mashes that I have tried (avocado, butternut squash, and beet hummus) have been delicious. I think they've shrunk the sizes of the scoops they use to dole out the mash, but it's still a good portion. Protip: you can get a slice of awesomely spongy sourdough bread with your bowls, but you have to ask. The staff skews young. They're friendly and enthusiastic, but they'll also have yelling conversations with each other while you're placing your order, which can be a little disconcerting. read more

After visiting Happy and Hale during their grand opening last weekend, I look forward to returning! We tried a banana, almond butter, cocoa and coffee smoothie ($8+) and a beet away juice ($4+). The smoothie was heavy on banana and surprisingly used coffee grounds as the coffee factor, but I enjoyed it the more I drank it. And, must admit, was inspired to purchase my own fancy blender to recreate the concoction. The juice was delicious, albeit both items were pricy. This storefront draws in the Duke students, and it's not just because it's located in the old Duck shop (Duke's apparel store), it's delicious, healthy and relatively quick. With a nice patio and a clean and fresh modern inside, it's hard not to be attracted to this space. Oh hale yes. After a spin class, a friend and I visited Happy + Hale for smoothies. She had the Almond Brothers and I had the Pink Drink. Her smoothie tasted like a milkshake almost, and mine tasted healthy (fruity and natural but not grassy) and was beautiful. It was the perfect stop after working out. Both of our smoothies were reasonably priced at $5.95 and $6.95, which is less than I'm used to paying at comparable places. The food menu looked delicious, as did everyone's food around us. I don't know if I'll try a poke bowl or salad the next time, so I either need to plan on taking multiple visits or taking friends who like to share. The option of customizing bowls by going down the line and picking toppings looked amazing, but there's also designed bowls that seemed unique. Too many options is always a good problem. The inside was very cute. It was bright with tasteful, minimalist decor and a decent amount of seating. We sat outside at the little tables and then walked around the rest of the street to explore the area. I can't wait to come back here. I've gotten the Almond Brothers smoothie twice now and its SO GOOD. It's caffeinated and is sweetened with bananas in almond milk and is just so good. My brain loves it! And I don't particularly love bananas so that's saying something. Also want to rave about the service here --- my friend got a cold brew coffee bottle out of their fridge and asked for some milk to go with it - assuming she'd have to pay additional for it. Easily my favorite $12 salad place in the Triangle area. Happy & Hale is my favorite place to eat when i'm trying to make up for my dietary mistakes from the previous days. You could easily boil this place down into a trendy avocado millennial place (it is) and as a millennial that loves avocados and a $12 salad I do really love this place. On my last visit I got the Almond Brothers smoothie(chocolate almond milk, banana, almond butter, ground coffee) and the avocado toast. I find that both are delicious but paired together is the perfect filling meal. It's typically my go to brunch staple. Always get the egg on & sriracha on the avocado toast too. It's a tough contest between Happy & Hale and Monuts for who has the best Avocado toast on 9th Street. When I don't go with those items I usually order the protein bowl salad (spinach base of course) which is very hearty. I've had their poke bowl which was fine, but not their strongest offering especially with Zen Fish down the road. Beverage wise they offer kombucha on tap and have various fresh juices, teas, and other healthy options. So if you love soda you're probably out of luck. I usually get the Happy Water. I've always been satisfied with their salad bowls combinations and they do offer the option to customize your own or change things on the fly. The service is always very snappy. The biggest challenge with this place is seating can sometimes be tricky especially if the Duke students are out in full force and camping out with their laptops. Beyond that it's easy to find parking, and they have nice outdoor seating when the weather is agreeable. I really like that Happy & Hale caters to people wanting healthy food that also tastes really good too. They promote a healthy lifestyle since they offer yoga and are into local ingredients too.
