I searched high & low and near & far for a restaurant that serve / sell treasure pot at this time of year for our winter solstice family dinner. All the usual suspects I called said they won't have treasure pots on the menus until Lunar New Year. My aunt and uncle recommended Happy Hong Kong over conversation at lunch recently. They said they came across their advertisement of treasure pots of different sizes in the local Chinese newspaper. My dad took a picture of the ad and sent it to me. An order was swiftly placed on the phone and I went to the restaurant a few days later to pay for the order and put down a $30 depot for the claypot. We picked it up on the day of. The sauce came in a separate tub so we could pour it in when we were ready to heat it up when we were ready. We were pleasantly surprised with the amont and variety of ingredients for an order for 4 for $138: - abalone - sea cucumber - smoke duck - chicken - prawns - scallops - roast pork - tofu skins - broccoli - Napa cabbage - pork rind - fish balls It was one of the better treasure pots we have had and everyone loved it. We had never been to the restaurant before. I took my dad to the restaurant for lunch a couple of days later while I returned the pot for the deposit. We had congees and shared a noodle dish. HK style place inside this quaint looking (old style British) hotel. Parking is available in the lot in front of the restaurant and hotel. The place obviously used to be a pub. There is even a nice N facing patio. They've added some fancy LED neon style lighting as well. Staff are friendly. The portions here are larger than normal, which is really nice in the modern era. Friends were impressed at the giant pile of black pepper beef noodles on my plate. Taste is decent but average. Basically it's what one would find at this type of restaurant. Good value. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things as some other tables ordered Chinese dishes that looked and smelled delicious. Our meals were average (though prices were reasonable). The steak was well done and my sauce was a bit too salty for my preference. The chicken was cooked well and juicy though. Service is good but be mindful that the restaurant is connected to the hotel (the shared washroom was dirty and old). I would recommend trying the other Chinese dishes and skipping the western set (choose your own 2 / 3 options). read more

I'd give a 2.5 if possible. The food was good. Noodle Portion was decent. However the meat portion was anemic. Literally 5 thin slices of beef. The spring rolls are tasty. Service: ooof.... The waitress only came when we waived her down. We had a party of three. Nothing big. One person received their food within 2 minutes of ordering, not sure how the food even got done that fast. They didn't bring the spring rolls until the second party received their meal. I didn't get my meal until my wife was completely done, and she doesn't eat quickly. Overall, food was worthy of a second visit. The service needs help. And common sense says bring everyone at the table food at the same time. read more

I've seen Happy Hong Kong each time I visit Costco Richmond. Got me thinking and finally got to dine in for lunch. Good menu selection of classic HK cafe dishes (noodles, baked rice, French toast, club sandwiches, pineapple bun with butter) and drinks (milk tea, Ovaltine & coffee). Nice to see some dim sum items on the menu too like shrimp dumplings and braised chicken feet. My two friends and I ordered 3 milk coffees, flat rice noodle with beef brisket and choy, seafood cream baked rice and pork club sandwich with fries. All were delicious and good portions. Total for lunch was around $75 with tips and tax. I would come back again. Happy Hong Kong offers good old-fashion comfort food from affordable to mid-range price dishes. One thing they can work on is attention to service as there were only 2 ladies taking all the orders and also covering the front desk/till. They were welcoming and friendly but when it got busy, we had to wave one of them down to put in an order or waited for more tea. They could also be under staff but we were in no rush so enjoy the time chit chatting the afternoon away. Cozy atmosphere and enjoyed looking at the memorabilias and photos of old Hong Kong. Interior decorated with all art of play Cantonese shows on the back TV. Patio section would be nice to try when the weather is better with the neon signs. HK style cafe that opened relatively recently. Located at the inn across from the Costco, right beside the Shanghai Wonderful restaurant. They have a covered outdoor space and indoor space. Indoor space is small to medium sized. Went there on a Friday. We got a table without a reservation, but it was busy and the indoor space filled up. Pretty big menu as typical of HK cafes. They have Chinese items and more the HK style western items like pasta and what not. They have a chocolate toast that has a filling. We tried it and it looked cool. Tasted alright. For mains, we got pork chop spaghetti and chicken cutlet fried rice. Also had a stir-fried beef and fish clay pot. Portions are okay, not the biggest. The portion appear smaller because they use plates with a big rim and a smaller recessed center portion. The taste for the pasta and rice was alright, and the Chinese dishes were good. Finally, we had their chicken soup/hotpot, which is served as a plate of half a raw marinated chicken, some lettuce, and a pot with a herbal soup. The chicken tasted really tender after cooking in the soup. Good soup to have especially when it's cold. Overall it was decent meal. Price was alright. read more

I am surprised at the low scores other reviewers are giving this restaurant. The restaurant may not be very good in terms of service, but in terms of food, it is authentic and quite good. I was hesitant in trying this restaurant as it is in Richmond and, even worse, across from Costco. I hate to think about the traffic, so I came here on a holiday when Costco is closed. There is ample parking as restaurant patrons can use the non-reserved hotel parking spots. The decor of the restaurant has old photos, posters, and items from Hong Kong during its colonial days. I came here with a friend, I did not know the exact name what she ordered and tried to look it up on the restaurant's website, but the restaurant does not have a working website! At the time of ordering, we were being a bit adventurous for we didn't know exactly what would be in the dish, the name on the menu was very vague. It was only when the dish arrived that we knew it had shrimps. I ordered the Beef Stir Fry with Rice Noodles. Both dishes were freshly made, hot, tasty, and not too greasy. The rice noodles did not stick together and was done perfect. It was pretty authentic Hong Kong cafe taste and we were both happy with the food. The service may be a bit lacking. I went to this place for an early lunch. This place is located beside a hotel and it is one of the main restaurant . The restaurant looks great with a little HK history in their decors. On that day, I ordered the Tomato Beef Tongue with Rice. The dish was great in taste, but expect to be the Canadian version (with chunk of tomato). The sauce is the HK café style tomato sauce, made with tomato paste. The meat were tendered and well portion of cross slice of meat, rather than strips. They offered variety food from Chinese cuisine to Western cuisine, seafood, hot pot and decent drink menu. We have ordered: * Mixed Grilled combo ($17.95/2pc): choose for pork chop cutlet and fish fillet cutlet with spaghetti. This combo also came with a soup, a drink and choice of sauce. Both kinds of fillet are very good as they are very crunchy but soft inside. Food was tasty. Service is great if you're visibly white/Anglo. We really wanted to give this place a great review but saw how folx who were Asian or white got better treatment than us-- were served tea and water without asking for it, got small talk and general pleasantries, were constantly being checked on, and got their food 10x faster than we did. Fortunately our young children seemed blissfully unaware of the microagressions and difference in treatment and fully enjoyed their meal. I hope this comment is read and things change; interpersonal oppression hurts all parties involved. read more

Cute retro style decor. Comfortable seating. Not fancy. Cons: Service was very slow and inattentive. Beef Noodle dish came out probably 15 minutes after the rice. Had to flag down servers for drink refill and check. Verdict: I'd go again, maybe earlier in the evening when it isn't so busy. We had a nice chat with another couple while we waited, so it wasn't unpleasant at all. Lots of delicious looking dishes being enjoyed. We made a reservation for this spot because we weren't sure how busy it would get on Halloween night but thankfully we did. Within minutes after we sat down, the whole restaurant was packed. There were only two staff on the floor but they were very efficient and very attentive to all customers needs. The interior is nicely decorated with Hong Kong scenes and we really liked the vibe. Of course, that also made us a little skeptical when a restaurant is so invested in their decor. We each ordered a dish and there was hardly enough table space to put everything because they brought out individual plates and bowls for each of us. The prices are a little high (but perhaps that's inflation) however, each dish included a hot drink; for the rice dishes, it came with a massive mountain of white rice that is easily the size of two bowls at other spots. Since we were at a Hong Kong cafe, we ordered some classics such as HK brisket curry and stir-fry beef chow fun. The curry was very flavourful and included fried potatoes; the chow fun was evenly coated and was very nicely cooked. We also fried the truffle fried rice and would probably stick to the more authentic Hong Kong dishes as the truffle flavour was very light and muted. We could have opted to share some dishes instead with the massive amounts of rice. We did not end up finishing any dishes and had to take everything to go. So unless you come with a massive appetite, be sure to bring some takeout containers and expect leftovers. We didn't order any of the seafood in the tanks (i.e., crabs, lobsters) but we saw a lot of other customers ordering that throughout the night so it was nice to see that option available. read more

It has an absolutely gross entry curtian that all the service employees touch as they go in and out of the kitchen. What does that tell you. We were ignored the entire time. The staffs were always busy, so busy that they didn't seem to care about the diners. We had to constantly ask for the status of our food, the wifi password, etc. I've been dining in restaurants for 10+ years in Richmond. Never had I ever encountered such kind of service before! Not sure how the media could hype about this restaurant? I would give a zero star if there is one exist in this post. In my humble opinion this so called 'HK style' cafe is the worst in my recent memory. Don't wish to detail the ambience and its services, as they are the typical Asian styple cafe atmosphere, min services one would surely expect. The shocker was not the above but the food menu. I cannot believe they could not even present the most basic simple dish such as rice or noodles. The menu are standard and just like in every chinese cafe. Some are signitures and some of course average. However this place is consistent bad across the board. We had a plate of beef brisket rice noodle, standard fried rice, a bowl of congee and dim sum and all not just bad, it was horrible. Especially the dim sum items were came from the frozen packages. Any foodies could figure it out it is not fresh, lack of flavour and full of msg. It has to be the worst dim sum I remembered 40 years in Regina, Sask. The pan fried noodles were swimming with thick layer of cornstarch sauce mixed with heavey dose of msg. It was disgusting and tastless to say the least. I should know better when the place was half full during lunch hours. Shame to the owner whom has the 'nerve' to elevate this 'garbage' to the memorable street food in HK. It was an embarassement and a disgrace to the good o fashion cafe food there in the 70s. We were staying overnight at the Hilton Express Richmond and saw the Happy Hong Kong Restaurant which is very close (30 second walk). The menu has lots of interesting offerings and is fun to read. We really enjoyed the traditional food, including tiger prawns, fried fish skin, dumplings, "pleurotus eryngii" (a kind of trumpet mushroom) all of which were well prepared. They have some good local craft beers; the staff were very pleasant, and while we did need to remind them to bring a couple of items that we had ordered, they responded very quickly. While not cheap, the prices seem reasonable for the quality of food. Overall a great experience. read more
