But, as Happy Lamb Hot Pot demonstrates, things that are great in theory aren't always that way in practice, Here's how it works. The first step is to choose a soup base from about half a dozen varieties. You can have one, two or three different types in the same pot (although adding a third will cost extra). Then you choose meat: chicken, beef, lamb or pork. They also offer some premium cuts of beef for an additional fee. Once those are ordered, you visit the buffet where there's a wide selection of seafood, vegetables, sauces and even some foods that don't go into the hot pot, like chicken wings, sesame balls and fried rice. While I loved the fact that there were so many options, it quickly became apparent that some were much better than others. For example, the chicken and lamb were fine, but the non premium beef we got was not the best quality. The seafood and vegetables from the buffet were fresh and plentiful. However, the items that were not hot pot-able left something to be desired, like spring rolls that were cold in the middle, or dried out, overcooked fried dumplings. Our group was big enough to use separate hot pots at our table for a total of 4 soups. The Thai Tom Yum soup base was hands down the best and most flavorful of them all. The worse was the original marrow broth, which had a pungent sour flavor that basically made it inedible. I'm sure through trial and error a fantastic meal could be constructed from what's available here. But, for the price, I won't be in big hurry to return and make the effort. read more

We enjoyed the hot pot at Happy Lamb so well a few weeks ago that we returned last weekend. It was my first time trying hot pot and the server did a nice job explaining how things worked and recommended the broth to us. One thing I would note is the price on the door is actually $2 more because there is a broth fee per person. We enjoyed all kinds of vegetables and meats. The second time we went we tried the ribeye and it was delicious. This place is a fun treat and also had some pre-cooked noodles and items on the buffet our three year old enjoyed. The booth covers in several booths were poorly patched and the menus on the tables were soiled. I wouldn't call it dirty.... But it was off putting to look at when dining in an establishment. Also... if you are not a fan of buffet dining, then this is not the place for you. All of the patrons serve themselves at the buffet counters when collecting eating utensils, plates, seafood, cooked pasta/rice, dessert, etc. The only thing that waiters bring to your table are select meats and drinks. It's very difficult for me to review this place because I'm quite easy to satisfy, but I want to give a completely honest review. Service is great, attentive, and kind. But that's pretty much the only thing this place really has going for it. I've been to a few hotpot places and this has the least variety of additions and menu meats. There are only 5 meats and I think 4 soups? Beef, lamb, chicken, something similar to bulgogi, and pork belly.. The bar or area to grab everything else is kinda not the cleanest, as well as the variety there isn't that great either. I don't believe most of the stuff is fresh either and the majority of the seafood and other bar foods are frozen. Tables are not that clean, underneath, and the chairs. If it was cheaper, I'd say yeah go for it, but because it's priced the same as a really good one in let's say Carrollton, then I'd recommend against it. There may have been a recent management change because I've been stopping into this location for the past few years and am only now leaving a review since the attentive service has been absolutely excellent. Of course it is self serve, but that puts an emphasis on staff to keep drinks full, plates cleared from tables, and ordered extras coming. I've stopped in twice in the last month and both times it was beyond what I've come to expect from Happy Lamb. The buffet line foods are always full as well despite them getting relatively busy. The place is very clean and the self serve ice cream machine has been replaced by single serve portions which is nice. Highly recommend that you stop in to try hot pot here if you've never done it before. I've overheard staff walking new eaters through the process with very clear instructions. It's alright. The Happy Lamb locations in Chicago are so much better I feel like... this place has a small selection of frozen items to go into the hot pot and the meats themselves. The sauce bar isn't as robust. I don't even remember dessert. The self service area is also very small so if multiple parties are up to get stuff it's uncomfortable. Service is alright - we ordered some meats and at one point we didn't get the meats so when a server passed by and asked if we needed anything we mentioned we were missing the pork belly and next thing you know we end up with double. Seating was fine - I called earlier in the day and they said no reservations for a party of 4 but wait would be 10-15 mins. There's a good selection of meats to choose from. We loved the beef and the lamb. We tried the garlic beef as well, and that one wasn't our favorite. But the lamb, especially, was fantastic. We ordered the best of both worlds broth with a spicy marrow and the house marrow broth. Both were flavorful. The buffet selection was good, but not great. There were a few things that I'm used to for hot pot like the meatballs and watercress that they did have so that was a little disappointing. However, the sauce bar made up for that. I've been here once before and I was very satisfied the second time around. It's $27/per person during dinner service which is pricey but I don't come here often. In my opinion it's worth coming here when I feel like splurging on the all you can eat meat and self serve buffet. They also have several options of self serve freshly cooked hot side dishes, but I specifically came for the hot pot experience alone. And they did not miss on the flavors of their rich marrow broth. We had best of both worlds which gives you the option of choosing 2 separate broths. The spicy marrow broth had my eyes watering and the original broth is tasty too. My meat choices were angus beef and pork belly.. I had about 5 plates of meat. Didn't really touch the self serve buffet but I did want to try the thick glass noodles and also added bok choy for my health. lol and they serve sake too! Anyway definitely give this place a try if you can afford it! The service is great with keeping our drinks and broth full and they brought everything out extremely fast with a less than 5 minute wait. Loved the music and the ambiance was clean. The only complaint I have is when trying to get a lunch special I'm pretty much always told I didn't make it in time and that's just not the case, but times are hard and I understand needing the extra few dollars. We always came here at least once a month with our friends and never paid attention to the price, until today we found out that we were supposed to pay an extra $2 per person for the broth (we did not find out until we asked the employee) so instead of paying $26.99/ per person now it is $28.99. You'll choose your hotpot base and we went with the Best of Both Worlds (half original, half spicy) and ordered meats (beef, lamb, and pork belly). They offered a buffet of different items that can be added to the hotpot (primarily seafood, greens, tofu, etc). They also have a hot bar and a small sauce area. Overall, it was a nice experience of cooking our own food, the waiters come by often to refill the broths, and meats (if needed). You're able to get two broths at the same time if you want (I get one spicy and one non-spicy) and they have an all you can eat menu for about $30! They have a buffet-style area where you can get your veggies, noodles, rice, seafood, etc. And don't forget about the hot pot sauce! I combine their sesame sauce, soy sauce, fresh garlic, chili oil, sugar, cilantro, and green onions to make the perfect sauce to go with your meat! Tried it again almost a year later. Will never been back for several reasons. I have never been humiliated and treated more poorly at a restaurant. My siblings and I went in for dinner, ordered our soup base, meat, etc. Got our soup, drinks and everything else in a timely manner. 20 minutes go by and only one side our soup is boiling, so I asked an employee if we could make our soup hotter. I was told no that because one side had more oil thats why that side was boiling more... Right. I didnt want to say anything because my siblings do come here very often so I let it go. In the hour we were eating her side of the soup never boiled, and my side with the "oil" barely came to a few bubbles boil. Which I know that is not typically how the hot pot is every. single. time we have been. Anyyyyways, we suck it up and eat our dinner, make do with what we can. Not to mention they were out of several items we came there specifically for.. Keep in mind I've been coming here for the past two years, and have paid with Apple Pay nearly every time and my siblings have been here recently and paid with Apple pay. So we go to pay and she rather bluntly says "give me your card?". I said "Oh, I have apple pay!" and im met with an annoying tone "We dont do apple pay anymore for a few months..". What?? I didnt have my card on me so I ask if I can go to an ATM.. because what am I supposed to do. They STILL have the sign on THE DOOR saying what forms of payment they take?!.
