The reviews are very mixed but we wanted to try anyway. Greeted and sat immediately. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Our server was patient and helpful. The owner (I think) helped the grands order special drinks and they enjoyed that. We started with the Gyoza which was delicious, cooked perfectly, not overdone. Staying at a hotel near by for concert and wanted some sushi. If you've ever had GOOD Japanese food..don't come here. Honestly we have had better SUSHI at HEB and Market Place ..grocery stores!! The "shrimp" fried rice looked like it was shrimp from a cup o noodles and the rice was very flavorless. $60 for 2 CA rolls, 1 crunch roll with zero crunch :(, miso soup, and kids chicken teriyaki was BEYOND underwhelming. Holy cow, this place is so good! My 11 YO daughter is a sushi connoisseur and only likes Sushi Zen in Southlake. We've tried so many other places but always end up in Southlake. We recently started coming to Arlington and came to Yelp for suggestions, thank you to everyone who reviewed Umi Sushi and Grill! It's kind of tucked away in the back of a strip mall off a busy street. We arrived right at 5pm when they reopen for dinner and people just started strolling in like they come all the time. She always judges based on the basic rolls (salmon and california) and this place is her new #1. The Avocado roll ended up being her favorite! We will definitely come back and try other rolls. The sushi was so good and fresh. The restaurant appears to be family owned and they were very attentive. It's a nice, relaxing, clean, and cozy atmosphere but I could see it being less so at busier times. Two notes. I ordered rice and didn't receive it (which was absolutely ok because the sushi was so filling and just the right amount of food) and am afraid I may have paid for it inadvertently so be extra sure to check your bill. And secondly, if you're looking to linger a bit after closing time, don't. They close exactly on time and we're out the door at the same time as us. I decided to dine in for lunch today while I was out running errands, and I was very underwhelmed. The service was great, but the food was forgettable. I got the Gyoza. They weren't good--flavorless and a bit undercooked, not in a health hazard way, but in a texture way. I then ordered the Cherry Blossom roll as my main. It was also flavorless. We were in Arlington for a special event, was craving some Sushi, saw Umi on the list and wanted to give them a try, we stopped in right when it was opening, so it wasn't quite busy or crowded. I'm not sure what was going on, but the restaurant was pretty hot and humid, so that wasn't a great experience. Overall, the salmon tower didn't taste well as we expected, didn't have enough sauce/flavor, but the scallop dynamite was great. To give my honest opinion, would I go back, probably not, if there's anything I critique, I would say, try getting the building back up and have the A/C unit up and running. read more

The food here is pretty good! My friend and I came here on a Friday night, and it wasn't too busy. There are sooooo many sushi options on the menu, which can be a little overwhelming. There are also other dishes like fried rice and noodle dishes, if you don't want sushi. We shared the fried calamari appetizer and 3 rolls. The nice gentleman that took care of us was polite and always made sure we had what we needed. Unfortunately my mother in-law found what seems to look like a hair. I hate to leave a small business any kind of negative review. On a positive note, the service was fantastic, everyone was so nice. The sushi menu is overwhelming and then there is a whole other menu. The food was just meh, the chicken friend rice was incredibly bland, someone else at my table got chicken teriyaki and it was also bland. The sushi was just ok, the miso soup didn't taste like miso. I mean I didn't have high expectations but this was kinda a let down. As a cook I would be overwhelmed having to remember how to make that many items. Time for an update! I love Suzushii and Jon and I have found ourselves here pretty often lately. The sushi menu is so enormous, first of all, like ridiculously huge. And food comes out ridiculously fast. If you don't want everything served all at once, just order a few things at a time. My favorite things to get: edamame, salmon sashimi, and a side of steamed rice. The salmon sashimi is always bright and fresh and served with lemon slices, which I love. You get 6 hearty pieces for $12 which seems fair to me. Most of the sushi rolls are cheaper of course. They have a full bar here and I like to order a glass of Kendall Jackson cabernet. Jon always orders a large hot sake which we share, and then a Kirin Light or Kirin Ichiban or a Sapporo. Yum. The staff and bartenders are super sweet. Really fast and friendly service. read more

Terrible experience! If you are looking for a non-authentic Japanese food, this is the place. Out of the 70 types of rolls that they offer (number mentioned by the waiter), 90% of them have imitation crab, are fried (or deep fried) or have spicy on it (even the famous shrimp tempura has imitation crab). Any changes or additions to the original rolls have an extra charge (example exchanging smoke for regular salmon or simply the side sauces such as eel or spicy mayo sauce). The first experience was the drink, which was a flat Diet Coke (waiter excused herself affirming that usually diet drinks are not highly carbonated). Also, I ordered an avocado salad which was romaine lettuce and half avocado for $10!! I ordered one roll with yellowtail which was falling apart and the fish was not fresh (color and smell). Chicken fried rice was not fresh, cero vegetables and the chicken was dry. Sashimi combo fish was old, not fresh at all and chewy. Sushi is my favorite dish so I eat it almost once a week and usually try to visit new restaurants during my trips; by far I can say this is the worst experience I have ever had. I requested to talk with a manager but he/she was on vacation. Waiters did not care much about the complains. I do not recommend anyone to try this expensive and terrible place. read more
