I had a great time at this Shabu Shabu restaurant in SF. My friend and I were able to call ahead last minute on a busy Saturday night for a spot here. When we arrived, we waited for about 15 minutes until they were able to seat us. Inside, it was a bit busy. It was stuffy because of the hot pot and my friend and I had shared seating with another party. It was a bit uncomfortable for me, but the good food made up for it. My friend and I shared this meal deal for 2 which came with our own soup flavor and 4 different types of meat to share for around $36 each. I got the Sukiyaki soup base and it was great! It wasn't too sweet nor strong in flavor, so it could soak up the flavors from the meats and veggies. Next the different cuts of wagyu meats. All of them were good quality and melted in my mouth. Yum! We were also given veggies, tofu, and noodles. All of them were great additions and kept me full. The side sauces were nice to dip the meats in. I especially loved this creamy and nutty sauce, but don't know the name of it. It was a bit awkward having to share them with the party next to us though. The service was great and the owner was the one serving us. She seemed pretty busy, but was nice and attentive to us. She even gave us free water bottles on the house since they didn't have any water cups available. Overall, a good experience here and a great value for what you pay for. Got the premium AYCE. Didn't opt for the a la cart. I liked the Wagyu options and they were soft and tender. I also liked the sesame sauce a lot for dipping. The wheat noodles are also super springy and delicious. I got the spicy tonkotsu broth and it was also super rich and flavorful which I liked, since I've had some experiences with very bland or bad broths before. I didn't like the "Wagyu lite" cut though, was lean for my liking. It was pretty empty when I went, at around 6 PM on a Thursday after work. read more

After coming here 2 years ago, my boys seem to come once a month and have gotten to know the owner and staff who while here tonight I could tell she puts her heart and soul into making sure everyone is enjoying themselves. She also explained in great detail about the differences between the Dassai 39 and 45 sakes regarding the taste profiles and the #s representing the % of rice polished from its original size in the making of the sake. We ordered the all you can eat in which we ordered one plate of premium meat at an up charge. Unlimited portions of meats and veggies. Sake was smooth and paired well with our meal. OMG where do I start! This place was hands down the best shabu shabu I have had in awhile. The place is cute and tucked away in the Fillmore district. Easy Uber ride from anywhere in the city. We were greeted by one waitress and sat at the bar because of multiple parties on NYE. The menu is a write on, where you select if you want regular AYCE, premium or on the other side a la carte I guess. We were hungry and opted for premium. It was about 135 for two adults and one child price. The food! OMG SO GOOD! We opted for miso, spicy miso and a tonkatsu broth. All were perfection with some of the added garlic and sauces they give you. The wagyu and thin sliced pork were the favorites for us. So flavorful with the broth. My son got rice which I think I would do next time. I opted for ramen noodles which were thick and took more time to cook but well worth it. The guy cutting the meat was friendly as well. Consistently great quality meats. Most people judge meat purely off of "melt in your mouth". This spot definitely delivers on that flavor profile but it goes beyond that. Each meat they offer has a distinct flavor profile and texture that it provides a more diverse tasting experience beyond just a melt in your mouth experience. We came as a party of 8. Most of us got spicy tonkatsu and spicy miso. If you're choosing between either, pick the tonkatsu. The miso was near flavorless. The key spotlight of the restaurant in our opinion was the meat quality of the wagyu + spicy lemon sauce. There are other places that I would recommend, but this restaurant was mediocre overall. After some light appetizers up the street, we were super hungry and craving some shabu shabu on a cold winter night. This spot was down the street and didn't have a wait so we decided to give it a try. Happy Shabu Shabu is an AYCE shabu spot that starts at $39 and we upgraded to the premium wagyu meats for an additional $6.95. They have plenty of meat options, and honestly I couldn't tell the difference between most of the cuts flavor wise, but it was all really good. As for the veggies, they had a ton of options as well. Napa cabbage, bok choy, carrots, noodles, enough to make up for my lack of vegetable eating during the week. The sauces were delicious. Whatever their spicy sauce was, I needed refills of that all night. Great to dip your meats in. They even gave us fresh sliced jalapeños that added a nice level of spice to each bite. For drinks we got a pitcher of beer and a large sake. They used to be an AYCE drinking spot but they had to change that up recently. But they made all their beer and sake 50% off which means you can drink a bunch without spending a ton. Jo, who I think was one of the owners helped us out all night and she was amazing and made our night fun. She was very kind and very hospitable. Great vibes all around! Enjoyed this place! It's clean, and the staff is very nice and attentive. My kids were with us and they took up seats, but they were not going to eat because they're in a picky phase. Our server was extremely understanding about it and engaged them in conversation and play and let them see the dish robot that they use. She even got my daughter to try some of the meat, though she didn't take to it. Our group ordered the premium all you can eat and enjoyed everything we ordered. Our server even let us try a couple of the premium cuts just for taste without us ordering them. We would've definitely ordered some, but we were so full by that point that we couldn't do it. If you like hotpot or kbbq, try Happy Shabu Shabu! It's a Japanese cook-it-yourself all you can eat restaurant (they have non AYCE options too). You can order 4 items at a time from a selection of items and pay a couple dollars more for the premium selection. Food: they have lots of different meat options (beef, pork, lamb, shrimp). In my opinion the premium menu is worth it for the Wagyu option which is by far better than the other types of meat. I also suggest having it without the sauce because the flavor and the texture of the meat is best plain The ambiance is great, I've taken friends here multiple times and the decor and lighting feels welcoming and clean. For our large group, we were seated at the central opposing tables-- too far to hear one half of the group, and too adjacent to easily talk to the other half. It diluted our experience immediately lol. As typical of AYCE spots, everyone needs to order AYCE together, no mix-and-matching of AYCE and a la carte diners. For AYCE, the meat portions are generous and come with a healthy helping of veggies. Broths are good, but unremarkable. Could use more sauce options. I couldn't help but notice the sole employee (owner? manager?) was hustling around the entire shop, attending to empty waters, orders, new customers-- for just one person, she was holding the fort down for sure. Very nice shabu shabu spot that is open fairly late. We came an hour before closing and there was just one party dining in so we were seated immediately. The ordering is pretty simple. Order the broth you'd like, then meat and veggies. I decided to get the spicy tonkotsu which is an extra $2. For meats I ordered the pork belly, pork shoulder and beef. The lady serving us noted that she will get the veggies out for us so we didn't need to choose which. She ended up bringing everything on the menu for us as well as two type of noodles. We also got 3 different dipping sauces. The broth came first and you can smell the spiciness. Did a little taste test and it did have a little kick to it. The meats looked premium. You can definitely see the marbling on the beef. The portion size was pretty big too which is a plus. Broth was good but adding the premium meats definitely changes things. Veggies were also good especially the mushrooms. I did ask for extra noodles and mushrooms but other than that the veggie and meat portions were pretty good and enough to just order once. Overall, the soup was good. The meat and veggies were top tier especially their beef. You can upgrade to premium meat as well. For around $30 you'll definitely get your moneys worth here. Portions are good but you can always ask for more since it's AYCE. There was just one staff member working but it was 1 hour to closing so it was pretty reasonable. The nami nami was my favorite and reminded me of beef belly. I love how all the beef is great quality and thinly sliced. We both got the spicy tonkatsu broth. Love how the chili oil has the tingly/szechuan chili pepper taste. When you cook the bok choi/napa cabbage, you can taste the flavors of the broth (yumm)! The food itself is very plentiful, a great variety of veggies (daikon, mushrooms, Napa cabbage, etc) and proteins (shrimp, tofu, 3 kinds of Waygu, lamb, egg, chicken, etc) and starch (rice, wheat noodle, glass noodle, ramen noodle).
